Who's Who in the Bangkok Bombing Investigation

BANGKOK — Rapid developments in the investigation into who bombed the Erawan Shrine have produced a flurry of leads. Here's a breakdown of what's known about the suspects to date.

Name: Unknown

Nationality: Unknown

Charges: Premeditated murder, causing explosion with intention to maim or kill, possession of explosives, carrying explosives into a residential area.

Issued: 19 Aug., 2015

Identified as a foreigner of unknown nationality or name in the warrant, the first court-approved warrant was for a man in a yellow shirt seen leaving a backpack at the Erawan Shrine three minutes before an explosion there on 17 Aug. killed 20 people.

Warrant No. 2

Name: Unknown

Nationality: Unknown

Charges: Premeditated attempted murder, possession of explosives, illegally detonating a bomb

Issued: 27 Aug., 2015

Identified as an “Asian man” of unknown nationality or name in the warrant, the second warrant was issued 27 Aug. for a man in a blue shirt seen dumping a bag in a canal near the Chao Phraya River’s Sathorn Pier minutes after the Erawan Shrine blast. No one was injured when something exploded in the water at the same spot at 1pm the next afternoon.

Name: Wanna “Maisaroh” Suansan, 26

Nationality: Thailand

Charges: Possession of war materials

Issued: 31 Aug., 2015

On 31 Aug., 26-year-old Wanna Suansan became the first named suspect in the investigation of the attack. Security forces raided a Min Buri district apartment where several rooms were rented in her name. There they found a large cache of bomb-making materials. Wanna, who denies involvement and flew to Turkey with her husband six weeks before the attack, has said she hasn’t been to the building in a year’s time, and the rooms were rented to friends of her husband.

Issued: 31 Aug., 2015

An unidentified foreign man investigators said was staying in one of the rooms rented in Wanna Suansan’s name at the Maimuna Garden Home apartments in Min Buri.

Nationality: Turkey

Charge: Possession of explosives

Issued: 1 Sept., 2015

One of three suspects named in warrants approved by a court 1 Sept., Ahmet Bozoglan is believed to have been involved in the plot and made use of one or both suspected bomb-making dens discovered 29 Aug.

Name: Emrah Davutoglu

Nationality: Turkey

Charge: Possession of war materials

Issued: 2 Sept., 2015

On 2 Sept., a court approved a warrant for the arrest of Emrah Davutoglu. Davutoglu is a Turkish national married to Thai bombing suspect Wanna Suansan. He flew out of Phuket Airport on July 1 with Wanna and their infant son for Turkey. Wanna has reportedly told authorities that Davutoglu rented several rooms at a Min Buri apartment building to friends of his.

Warrant No. 9

Name: Yusufu Mieraili, 25

Nationality: Chinese

Charges: Possession of explosives

Issued: 3 Sept., 2015

Yusufu Mieraili was the second suspect to be arrested. He was taken into Thai custody near the border with Cambodia on Tuesday. Officials originally believed he could be the Erawan Shrine bomber himself, but now it's thought he handed over the backpack bomb to shrine bomber and took photos of the attack from a nearby vantage point. Mieraili’s passport identifies him as from Xinjiang, China, home to the Uighur ethnic group. Police said he's confessed to involvement and he is now in jail awaiting trial.

Warrant No. 10

Name: Abdullah Abdullahman

Nationality: Unknown

Charges: Possession of explosives

Issued: 7 Sept., 2015

The 10th suspect sought in connection with the blast was identified as Abdullah Abdullahman. The warrant, which did not specify his nationality, charged him with possession of explosives. Investigators said he was seen visiting the Poon Anan Apartments in Bangkok’s Nong Chok district where Karadag was arrested 29 Aug. in a room filled with bomb components.

There have been three arrests to date in the bombing investigation.

Arrested: 29 Aug., 2015

Days after eulogies were being drafted for the moribund investigation, the first break in the case led to a raid on the Poon Anan apartment building in the capital’s eastern outskirts. More than 100 police and soldiers swarmed the building in the Nong Chok district, where they found detonators, ball bearings, explosives and metal pipes similar to materials used in the Erawan Shrine bomb. They also found piles of forged Turkish passports and their first suspect, a man identified in an obviously forged passport as 28-year-old Adem Karadag. He was handed over to police by the military and now is in jail awaiting trial.

Arrest No. 2

Name: Yusufu Mieraili

Nationality: China

Arrested: 1 Sept., 2015

Yusufu Mieraili was the second suspect to be arrested. He was taken into Thai custody near the border with Cambodia on Tuesday. Thai officials said they believed he could be the man for whom their first arrest warrant was issued: The Erawan Shrine bomber. They have yet to confirm or dismiss that suspicion. Mieraili’s passport identifies him as from Xinjiang, China, home to the Uighur ethnic group. He was still in military custody as of 4 Sept.

Arrest No. 3

 

Name: Gamarudeng Saho, 38

Nationality: Thailand

Arrested: 1 Sept., 2015

A Thai national was arrested in the Deep South on the evening of 1-Sept. by officers from the 36th Task Force. Officers reportedly used special authority granted under martial law to detain him and he was eventually flown by helicopter to Bangkok where he was thought to be interrogated at an army base. Officials have yet to confirm the arrest.

Nationality: Unknown

Charges: Possession of explosives

Issued: 7 Sept., 2015

Little information was released about the 11th suspect sought in connection with the blast, apart from this undated, low quality image.
