Thai schoolboy suffers neck fracture after falling through roof

NONTHABURI — 24 July 2026.A Grade 9 student was seriously injured after falling through an old tiled roof at a well-known secondary school in Bang Kruai district.

Pol. Col. Phasakorn Chaitawiwong, superintendent of Plaibang Police Station, was alerted by a teacher at a school in Bang Khu Wiang subdistrict that a student had fallen from the roof and suffered serious injuries.

Emergency responders were immediately called to the scene and rushed the student to hospital.

An initial inspection found a large hole in the tiled roof connecting two school buildings, in a hall between the structures. Broken roof tiles and pieces of wood were scattered across the area where the student had fallen.

The injured student was taken to hospital for urgent treatment and admitted to the intensive care unit.

A teacher said the incident happened during the lunch break when the Grade 9 boy climbed out onto the roof to retrieve a pair of earphones that had fallen there while he was talking to his mother on the phone.

The teacher said the student apparently did not realise how old and fragile the tiled roof had become.

When he stepped onto the roof, the tiles reportedly collapsed under his weight, causing him to fall through the structure. His head struck a wooden plank on the ground below, leaving him seriously injured and suffering seizures.

Rescue workers rushed the student to hospital, where he was initially found to have suffered a fractured neck, according to the teacher.

The school has since issued warnings to students about the dangers of climbing outside school buildings and urged them to avoid accessing rooftops or other potentially dangerous areas.
