SI SA KET — Nearly a month after Cambodian shelling destroyed a 7-Eleven at a PTT gas station, a resilient nail salon owner has resumed operations, saying she fears losing revenue more than facing future bombs.
At the Ban Phue PTT gas station in Kantharalak district, Sisaket province, residents on August 21 were still visiting the site where a rocket struck on July 24, killing eight people and injuring dozens. The attack caused considerable damage to nearby buildings, yet a nail salon has reopened at the station.
The station remains a pilgrimage site where people view the rubble of the destroyed grocery store and lay white flowers in memory of the victims. Despite the somber atmosphere, local businesses are adapting and returning to normal.
Reporters found that just 20 meters from the blast site, several beauty service shops—including nail extensions, eyelash services, eyebrow tattoos, makeup and hair salons—remain operational.
Ms. Nitchiya Thonglue, 34, owner of a nail salon, said she was in her store during the blast and “was scared out of her pants.” She temporarily relocated to rented space in Kantharalak town, serving customers despite the inconvenience because she needed income for daily expenses.
She explained that closing the store caused considerable financial loss, and permanent relocation would be difficult given her substantial renovation investment. After power was restored to the station, she consulted customers who assured her they weren’t afraid to return, giving her confidence to reopen.
For safety and convenience, the salon currently operates by appointment only until the store is rebuilt, which should eventually restore foot traffic to the station.
The petrol station owner has supported affected tenants by waiving rental fees for three months or until full restoration, helping alleviate their hardship.
Around the gas station, locals and travelers still pass by to commemorate victims and show solidarity with business owners and residents determined to continue their lives despite the uncertain border situation.
Area residents say they want more than reconstruction or compensation—they want lasting peace, free from artillery fire or rocket attacks across the Cambodian border. They long for normal everyday life without further tragedy.
