PHUKET — Local residents in Phuket have expressed growing frustration over foreign tourists urinating in public spaces across the popular tourist destination. Recent incidents have been documented and shared widely on social media platforms.
The Phuket Times Facebook page recently published photos showing two separate incidents: one tourist urinating on Taweewong Road in Patong, and another relieving himself behind a parked vehicle in Mueang Phuket district. The posts have drawn numerous critical comments from locals, who labeled these visitors as “low-quality tourists.”
These incidents follow a recent controversial case at Phuket International Airport, where an intoxicated tourist was caught urinating in the passenger terminal. The incident prompted airport authorities to release an official statement asking passengers to “comply with airport regulations and refrain from behavior that may inconvenience others.”

While many social media users condemned the inappropriate behavior, others pointed to a possible contributing factor: the limited number of public restrooms in tourist areas. Some residents have called on local authorities to address this infrastructure gap by installing more public facilities across the island.
The incidents have sparked a broader discussion about tourist behavior and the need to balance tourism growth with maintaining the destination’s dignity and local residents’ quality of life.
