Woman’s GrabBike Dinner Date Seduces Lonely Internet

Image purportedly of a woman’s Sunday night dinner with her GrabBike driver exploded across the Thai net.

BANGKOK — There’s no reason to dine alone anymore, ever.

Exploding across the internet Monday is a post about a woman who, rather than eat barbecue alone, decided to remedy her solitude by inviting a motorcycle taxi driver to dine with her Sunday night in the Chatuchak district.

“How lonely do I have to be? I called a GrabBike to eat some barbecue alone. Then, I invited the GrabBike driver to dinner with me! This is just so beyond! 55555 #LatPhraoDistrictGrabBikesAreSavage Let’s eat! #LonelyPeople2017,” Mayavi wrote.

Responding to inquiries, Mayavi insisted Monday the whole thing wasn’t a subversive marketing campaign – but not quite the blind biker date it was made out to be.

“Yesterday, my GrabBike driver was a friend of mine that I hadn’t seen for a really long time. I saw his face on the app. So afterward, I invited him out to dinner, because I was going alone anyway,” she wrote.

A spokeswoman for Grab said they had nothing to do with it.

Still, Mayavi’s post struck a chord online, where loneliness is a rare topic of agreement. Since Sunday night it has been liked more than 30,000 times and shared almost 8,000 times.

In more than 3,700 comments, other users tagged their lonelyheart friends to suggest a new way for them to experience human contact.
