BANGKOK — It’s a known fact that the junta leader is a songwriter. But did you know he can also croon to Ed Sheeran, rap in Korean and cantar en espanol?
At least, that’s the gospel on Facebook page Thai Super Meme, which today released a viral video of Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha rapping and strutting to K-pop girl band Black Pink’s song “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” by juxtaposing clips of his speeches over the summer hit.
“Damn, what kind of person is [Prayuth]? You give him Korean lyrics, but they come out in Khmer 555555,” wrote commenter Astsadawut Binsalah.
The dubbed video of Prayuth singing the Korean and English words to “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” was posted just after midnight Tuesday and by the afternoon had been liked and shared more than 11,000 times.
At intervals in the video, Prayuth’s head replaces that of Thai band member Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban. Earlier this month, Panthongtae Shinawatra, son of ousted former-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatra, declared himself her fanboy.
Similar to BaracksDubs – which has garnered millions of views by dubbing Barack Obama’s speeches to pop hits since 2012 – Thai Super Meme has also dubbed pitch-shifted samples of the retired general’s voice over other songs. Netizens were blessed with Prayuth’s Spanish chops in June’s “Despacito,” a month after his rendition of cheesy earworm “Shape of You.”
Of course, why listen to covers when there’s the real deal? Don’t forget the junta leader has penned several originals: “Returning Happiness to the People,” “Because You’re Thailand,” “Hope and Faith,” “Bridge,” “Diamond Heart,” and most recently, “Fight For the Nation.”
“When the bass drop, it’s another banger,” the dubbed Prayuth signs off in the Black Pink video.
