GMMTV says ‘Scarlet Heart Thailand’ costumes draw from multiple cultures

GMMTV has defended the costume design and artistic elements of its upcoming historical fantasy series “Scarlet Heart Thailand”, saying its fictional setting draws inspiration from Lanna, Tai ethnic, Chinese and Myanmar cultural traditions, rather than presenting all elements as exclusively Thai.

In a statement issued on 23 October, the Thai entertainment company said the production team had researched costume, art and culture before adapting these influences to create the distinctive identity of Ullavee, a fictional city made specifically for the series.

The statement came after some Myanmar viewers questioned whether costumes and accessories shown in the series’ teaser resembled those worn at the Myanmar royal court, particularly during the Konbaung dynasty. An online petition launched on 20 October called on the production team to clarify its historical references and the sources of its designs.

GMMTV said it admired Myanmar’s artistic and cultural traditions for their beauty and distinctive character, alongside other cultural influences incorporated into the production. It stressed that it had no intention of presenting every element in the series as belonging to Thai culture.

“We respect the value and origins of each culture,” the company said, adding that the fictional setting was created out of an appreciation for cultural diversity and a commitment to portraying these influences with care and attention to detail.

GMMTV also apologised for concerns arising from the portrayal of cultural elements and thanked viewers for sharing their perspectives and reference materials. It said the company and production team respected the deep connection people have with their cultural heritage and remained committed to honouring the cultures that inspired the series.

“Scarlet Heart Thailand”, produced by GMMTV, is adapted from the Chinese novel “Bu Bu Jing Xin”. The story follows a modern woman who travels back in time and finds herself in the body of Fong Nuan, a woman from Ullavee, where she becomes involved in a power struggle among seven princes, as well as a story of love and fate.

The series features Win Metawin, Tu Tontawan, Nanon Korapat, Tay Tawan, Fourth Nattawat, Phuwin Tangsakyuen, Perth Tanapon and Force Jiratchapong.
