28 September 2026, World Athletics has confirmed that Thai sprinter Puripol Boonsan’s 19.88-second run in the men’s 200m at the 2026 Asian Games is an Asian record, jointly held with Chinese sprinter Xie Zhenye.
Puripol, who won gold in the event, clocked 19.88 seconds with a tailwind of -3.0 metres per second.
Xie recorded the same time of 19.88 seconds at a competition in London on 21 July 2019, with a legal tailwind of +0.9 metres per second. World Athletics regulations allow a tailwind of up to +2.0 metres per second for a performance to qualify for record purposes.
Despite sharing the Asian record, Puripol continues to hold the Asian Games records in both the men’s 100m and 200m.
His Asian Games records stand at 9.90 seconds in the 100m and 19.80 seconds in the 200m.
