Chinese tourist criticised for sitting atop Chiang Mai ancient city wall

CHIANG MAI — 13 August 2026, locals criticised the behaviour of a Chinese female tourist after she was spotted sitting with her legs dangling from Si Phum Corner, part of Chiang Mai’s ancient city wall and moat.

The tourist was seen sitting on the historic structure, which is an important landmark in Chiang Mai. Locals described the behaviour as inappropriate and raised concerns about respect for the city’s cultural heritage.

While the tourist was sitting atop Si Phum Corner, thunder and rain began. She then ran down from the structure to seek shelter from the rain.

Chiang Mai’s old city is surrounded by an ancient wall and moat, with several historic corners and gates forming key landmarks. These include Si Phum Corner, Hua Lin Corner, Kha Taam Corner and Ku Hueang Corner, as well as Chiang Mai Gate, Chang Phueak Gate, Suan Dok Gate and Tha Phae Gate.

The sites are considered important historical monuments in Chiang Mai province.
