Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn has sent a message of condolence to Norway’s newly ascended King Haakon VIII following the death of his father, King Harald V, on 28 August 2026.
In the message, King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida expressed their deep sadness over the passing of the Norwegian monarch.
“The Queen and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Your Majesty’s august father, His Majesty King Harald V,” the Thai King wrote.
He described King Harald V as a sovereign “close to the hearts of his people” who would be remembered for his vision, dedication and lifelong service to the unity, well-being and prosperity of Norway.
The Thai King also extended his condolences to King Haakon VIII, members of the Norwegian Royal Family and the people of Norway, saying that Thailand shares their grief over the loss.
He highlighted the close ties between the two royal families and their peoples, saying the relationship had been built on “good understanding, respect, mutual commitment and trust.”
“This precious and meaningful friendship will assuredly continue to strengthen and grow for generations to come,” King Vajiralongkorn wrote.
He concluded by offering his thoughts and prayers to the Norwegian Royal Family and people, in remembrance of what he described as the “gracious and virtuous reign” of King Harald V.
