BANGKOK — Nomadic families wandering between the Indian border and the Nepali Himalayan foothills will be reflected through the lense of a French-English photographer’s first solo exhibition “In Nowhere Land” Friday.
Contrasting to the vibrant colors of Kathmandu valley, photographer Didier Mayhew spent three years bonding and capturing slices of life living in the Terai area between India and Nepal where malaria was widespread.
Mayhew’s photos will display profound sentimental reflections of those he saw living bitterly on the margins of Nepalese society, in which children were left unprotected in makeshift temporary shelters while their parents went to the cities to seek means of survival.
Before turning to photography, Mayhew worked as an anthropologist and spent years working with refugees, prisoners and trauma victims. At 49, he lives in Nepal and is currently developing his recent photographic series in Bangkok.
The exhibition launches from 6:30pm Saturday and runs through April 29 at Kathmandu Photo Gallery on Pan Road, across the Hindu temple on lower Silom Road. It can be reached from BTS Surasak, BTS Sala Daeng or MRT Silom.
