BANGKOK — A talented French sculptor who worked and died in Thailand will be remembered Tuesday through her works from the past decade.
A dozen years after opening her studio in Bangkok, Valerie “Val” Goutard created an underwater sculpture garden, “Ocean Utopia,” near Koh Tao and had planned an exhibition to support it. But before that could happen, she died in a road accident in October. She was 49.
Now the project is being revived to showcase some of Val’s first sculptures since 2001, along with bronze masterpieces that she learned how to make in traditional Thai foundries after she moved to Asia in 2004.
Her permanent display works include “Inle Balance III” and “Urban Gathering” at Hotel Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, “Attraction II” at Bangkok University and “Flying Lovers II” at Lumpini Park.
Her bronze pieces are also on display in France, Australia, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore.
The exhibition launches at 6:30pm on Tuesday and runs through May 21 at S Gallery in the Hotel Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, which is a few minutes walk from BTS Asok or the Terminal 21 shopping mall.
