“What you see must be what you get,” minister warns buffets

BANGKOK — A senior Thai government minister has ordered an inspection of buffet restaurants in a popular Bangkok shopping district, warning that promotional claims must accurately reflect what consumers actually receive.

Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office overseeing the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB), led an on-site inspection in the Pathumwan area on 25 June, where buffet restaurants are highly competitive due to frequent promotions.

She said promotional competition is acceptable, but must be based on honesty, adding that advertising, pricing and service conditions must match reality. “Consumers should not be misled first and then have problems resolved later,” she said.

The inspection focused on three main areas: promotional advertising and terms must be clearly disclosed before purchase; food images and menu items must match actual products served; and prices must be fully transparent, including service charges and value-added tax.

The OCPB also warned against unclear terms in online pre-sold vouchers, saying conditions must be clearly stated at the point of sale.

Supamas said the inspection was carried out in coordination with multiple agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Internal Trade, and the Pathumwan district office, to cover food safety, pricing fairness and hygiene standards.

She added that misleading advertising could result in penalties under the Consumer Protection Act, including fines and imprisonment, while fraudulent advance voucher sales could also fall under criminal fraud provisions.

Consumers were urged to check full pricing details, including tax and service charges, before purchasing, and to review receipts carefully after payment. The OCPB said complaints can be filed via its hotline 1166, the OCPB Connect app, its website, or local Damrongtham centres.

China says it can hold people abroad accountable under ethnic unity law

China has the right to hold people outside its borders legally accountable under its new ethnic unity law, a senior official said on Wednesday, defending a provision that has drawn criticism ahead of the law’s implementation next week.

The law, passed in March and due to take effect on 1 July, includes a clause stating that individuals and groups outside China can be held legally responsible for undermining “ethnic unity and progress” or inciting ethnic separatism.

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Vice Justice Minister Hu Weilie said criticism of the overseas provision was based on a misunderstanding of the law.

“This provision is based on China’s national conditions, conforms to legal principles, and is consistent with international practice. It is a legitimate, lawful, necessary and feasible legal provision,” Hu said.

He said countries around the world have the right to prevent separatist activities and maintain social order through domestic legislation.

Hu said the overseas provision targets illegal acts and uses legal measures to guard against unlawful activities involving ethnic affairs originating from outside China.

He added that enforcing the provision would help safeguard China’s sovereignty, security and development interests, as well as the lawful rights and interests of people of all ethnic groups.

Hu also said the law would not affect normal exchanges between China and other countries, including academic discussions, economic and trade cooperation, and people-to-people contacts.

Musk loses trillionaire status as SpaceX stock slump

Musk loses trillionaire status after SpaceX stock slump

NEW YORK — 25 June 2026, Elon Musk has lost his status as the world’s first trillionaire after sharp declines in the share prices of SpaceX and Tesla erased more than $150 billion from his fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Bloomberg’s daily wealth ranking, updated at 17:30 New York time, showed that Musk’s net worth fell to $957 billion on 23 June, down from $1.11 trillion less than two weeks earlier.

The drop came after heavy losses in SpaceX and Tesla shares amid a broader sell-off in technology stocks, as investors increasingly questioned the long-term profitability of artificial intelligence (AI) investments.

Despite losing his trillionaire status, Musk remains the richest person in the world, maintaining a significant lead over the second-richest billionaire.

Musk made history on 12 June 2026 when SpaceX debuted on the Nasdaq stock exchange in a highly anticipated public offering. The company’s initial public offering (IPO) was priced at $135 per share, while the stock opened at $150 per share on its first trading day.

The listing pushed the rocket and satellite giant’s market value above $1.77 trillion. With Musk owning about 42% of the company, his paper wealth immediately surpassed the $1 trillion mark.

Investor enthusiasm continued to drive the stock higher, with SpaceX shares reaching a record $225.64 per share on 16 June, lifting Musk’s net worth to an estimated $1.32 trillion, its highest level on record.

However, the rally proved short-lived. Concerns over rising capital expenditures, growing AI infrastructure costs and persistently high interest rates triggered a broad technology-sector sell-off, affecting major firms including Nvidia, Intel and AMD.

SpaceX shares were among the hardest hit, plunging more than 30% from their mid-June peak to around $156 per share.

On 22 June, a particularly volatile trading session saw SpaceX shares tumble 16% in a single day, wiping an estimated $240 billion from Musk’s fortune.

Meanwhile, Tesla shares fell nearly 6% the following day, adding to the losses. Musk owns approximately 12% of Tesla’s outstanding shares.

Market analysts said post-IPO volatility is common for high-value companies, but the scale of the swings highlights the tension between lofty investor expectations and business realities.

Musk’s trillionaire status is especially vulnerable because his wealth is concentrated in a small number of assets. Nearly all of his fortune is tied to just two companies — SpaceX, which accounts for almost 80% of his wealth, and Tesla.

Analysts noted that a recovery of only about 6% in SpaceX shares from current levels would be enough to push Musk’s net worth back above the $1 trillion threshold.

Back-to-back powerful earthquakes slam Venezuela, collapsing buildings in the capital of Caracas

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Back-to-back powerful earthquakes struck off the coast of Venezuela on Wednesday evening, collapsing buildings and sending panicked residents into the streets.

The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes roiled the region, with buildings evacuated in cities as far away as Brazil’s Amazon about 1,700 kilometers (1,050 miles) away.

Late Wednesday, acting president Delcy Rodríguez said she was preparing to address the nation.

Rodríguez’s failure to address the nation within three hours of the earthquake, while her government did not give a report of injuries or fatalities in that time, was criticized by politicians and Venezuelans.

“The uncertainty becomes yet another layer of anguish,” Edmundo González, the opposition’s 2024 presidential candidate, said on X.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially said the first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, later revising that to 7.2, and its epicenter was west of the community of Morón, located along the country’s Caribbean coast, about 168 kilometers (104 miles) west of Caracas. The quake had a depth of 22 kilometers.

The USGS reported an even larger 7.5-magnitude earthquake just a minute later. The second quake had a depth of 10 kilometers and its epicenter was 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Morón.

The quakes, among the strongest to strike Venezuela in more than a century, struck shortly after 6 p.m. People evacuated swaying buildings in the capital Caracas, many visibly shocked as they saw entire walls that had collapsed, making furniture visible from the street. Dust columns could also be seen in two neighborhoods of the capital, where restaurants and other businesses are typically busy.

‘We all had to leave our houses’

People remained on the streets for hours, even after sunset. Some sat on the ground hugging their pets as dust gathered around them. Collapsed buildings, toppled electric poles and debris blocked streets. Parts of the capital lost power and cellphone signal.

“It started off gently and then gradually grew, and in the end, we all had to leave our houses, go outside and gather together,” Caracas resident Hector Ricci said.

The lack of cellphone signal in parts of Venezuela deepened the distress of many families, particularly those among the more than 7.7 million people who have left the country during its protracted crisis.

“May strength, serenity, and solidarity prevail among us in the face of this difficult time,” opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said from exile on X.

Impact felt throughout Venezuela

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said the quake could be felt in several states. The Altamira neighborhood in Caracas had “alarming situations” with collapsed homes and buildings, he said, suggesting people were injured in the earthquake and asking motorists to give way to ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

“We understand that some people may be desperate, but we are acting according to protocols to activate aid and rescue efforts to help those who need it most,” Cabello said on state television. “Be very careful with children and the elderly; call each other and check that no one has been harmed.”

He also urged people to remain outside as aftershocks could further damage some structures.

“The building really shook from side to side. Unreal. The force was incredibly strong,” Caracas resident Roberto Gamas said. “We were walking and it was tossing us around. Everything in the apartment fell. Well, thank God we were able to get out.”

Expressions of support posted on social media

Reaction pouring in swiftly on social media.

Venezuela opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, in exile after leaving Venezuela in December, took to to X to send prayers and wish strength to Venezuelans.

“May strength, serenity, and solidarity prevail among us in the face of this difficult time,” she wrote on X.

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele expressed solidarity with Venezuela following the earthquakes, saying his country’s “heart is with the people of Venezuela during these difficult times.”

“We send you all our solidarity and our prayers. Stay strong, Venezuela,” Bukele wrote.

Republican Rep. María Elvira Salazar of Florida said her “thoughts and prayers” were with Venezuela and expressed support for families affected, those still waiting for answers and first responders.

“The strength of the Venezuelan people has been tested time and again,” she wrote. “I have no doubt they will face this moment with the same resilience, courage, and hope that have carried them through every challenge.”

Earthquake impacts the region

Buildings in Manaus, Belem and Macapá in Brazil’s Amazon were evacuated, according to reports on TV Globo.

The quakes also were felt in Colombia’s Caribbean and northeast regions, but there were no reports of damages or injuries. The Colombian Maritime Authority in a statement said the country’s Caribbean coast is at no risk of tsunami.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert for Virgin Islands. Authorities in the Dominican Republic also issued one for the island. Another alert for Puerto Rico was quickly lifted.

Strong earthquakes are unusual in Venezuela.

While the country sits near multiple fault lines, its position straddling the South American and Caribbean plates make earthquakes much less common than in other parts of Latin America. Along the Pacific coast — in Mexico and Chile, for example — earthquakes are frequent. The two countries sit along the seismically active tectonic belt known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” which is responsible for 90% of earthquakes, according to the USGS.

The quakes also were felt in Colombia’s Caribbean and northeast regions, but there were no reports of damages or injuries. The Colombian Maritime Authority said in a statement that the country’s Caribbean coast is at no risk of tsunami.

In Brazil’s Amazon, buildings in the cities of Manaus, Belem and Macapá also were evacuated.

AIS green energy project delivers THB 33.88 million in social value

AIS has revealed the findings of its latest Social Return on Investment (SROI) study for the Green Energy Green Network for THAIs project at Thailand Research Expo 2026, organized by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI). The study found that the project generated a total social impact value of THB 33.88 million from an investment of THB 24.89 million, representing a social return of 1.36 times the investment. The findings underscore how digital infrastructure and clean energy can create measurable economic, social, and quality-of-life benefits for underserved communities.

Green Energy Green Network for THAIs is a collaborative initiative between Advanced Info Service Public Company Limited (AIS), Gulf Development Public Company Limited (GULF), and the Highland Research and Development Institute (Public Organization) (HRDI). The project deploys solar-powered telecommunications base stations in remote areas to address the lack of access to energy and communication infrastructure while creating what AIS calls an “Infrastructure of Opportunity” for local communities. To systematically assess the project’s long-term impact, the partners have continuously conducted SROI research to evaluate outcomes and inform future development strategies.

Mrs. Saichon Submakudom, Chief Corporate Communication of AIS said,

Picture2 10

Ms. , Chief Corporate Communication Officer, AIS, said, “Throughout the implementation of the Green Energy Green Network for THAIs project with our partners, we have witnessed meaningful changes across many communities. Areas that once lacked both electricity and connectivity now have access to education, healthcare services, and opportunities to generate income through digital technology.

Today, research findings have helped validate what we have long believed—that digital infrastructure and clean energy do more than provide connectivity; they create opportunities and improve people’s quality of life. The SROI study found that the project currently covers eight communities across five provinces—Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Lamphun, and Tak—benefiting more than 3,520 people from 918 households. The project has delivered benefits across multiple dimensions, including education, healthcare, community economic development, and environmental sustainability.”

Picture3 10

One notable example is Ban Mae Khong community in Chiang Mai, where digital connectivity has enabled local residents to promote Huai Nam Yen Waterfall through online channels, transforming it into an eco-tourism destination that has generated more than THB 2.5 million within few months in economic value for the community. The case demonstrates how digital infrastructure can transform connectivity into opportunity. Meanwhile, residents of Mokopoki community in Tak Province have leveraged digital technology to market agricultural products online, creating new income streams and overcoming geographical barriers that previously limited economic opportunities.

Beyond economic benefits, communities now have access to e-learning platforms, digital libraries, telemedicine services, and emergency medical referrals. The project also supports wildfire monitoring, disaster alerts, and emergency response capabilities in remote areas, further demonstrating the broader societal benefits enabled by access to reliable communications and energy infrastructure.

Picture4 4

Building on insights gained from both the research and field implementation, AIS is exploring new ways to maximize the value of telecommunications infrastructure. Future initiatives include utilizing mobile network towers as platforms for environmental and disaster monitoring systems, such as AI-powered wildfire detection solutions, real-time anomaly alert systems, and meteorological monitoring equipment. These technologies could support the monitoring of weather conditions, PM2.5 dispersion, and drought risks, while contributing to more effective environmental management and disaster preparedness.

“The findings do not merely reflect a social return figure; they demonstrate how investments in digital infrastructure and clean energy can create meaningful change in people’s lives—from improving access to education and healthcare to creating economic opportunities and strengthening community resilience,” Ms. Saichon added. “For AIS, success is not measured solely by the reach of a network signal. It is measured by the opportunities created, the lives improved, and the brighter futures made possible. When everyone has equal access to opportunities, that is where sustainable national development truly begins.”

AIS remains committed to leveraging research, innovation, and technology to drive inclusive and sustainable social development. The company believes that meaningful sustainability starts not only with technology, but with a deep understanding of social challenges, strong cross-sector collaboration, and the ability to transform knowledge into tangible outcomes that improve people’s lives. Through this commitment, digital infrastructure becomes more than connectivity—it becomes a pathway to opportunity, better quality of life, and a more sustainable future for all Thais.

British man arrested after acid attack on Pattaya guesthouse manager

PATTAYA — Police arrested a British man on Wednesday, a day after he allegedly threw acid at a guesthouse manager in Pattaya while searching for his Thai girlfriend, leaving the woman with severe injuries.

The suspect, identified as Richard Langford, 40, was detained near Soi Buakhao after local residents reported seeing him arguing with a Thai woman. The victim, a 43-year-old guesthouse manager, remains hospitalised with serious burns to her face and body.

Witnesses said the man had been knocking on doors throughout the guesthouse on Tuesday evening while searching for a Thai woman. The manager reportedly told residents that he was not a guest at the property and attempted to remove him. Shortly afterwards, she was found suffering burns after being splashed with a corrosive substance.

news142369 CLg8rMIcUv1782294550

According to police, Langford said he had gone to the guesthouse looking for his Thai girlfriend and one of her transgender friends because he believed they had his passport. He claimed he threw liquid from a nearby cup during a confrontation with the manager, insisting he did not know it contained a corrosive substance.

The Thai woman later told police she had been in a relationship with Langford for about five months. She said the couple had argued over his behaviour and separated shortly before the incident, prompting him to search for her.

Police said Langford had overstayed his visa since February. He is being charged with overstaying in Thailand, while investigators prepare additional charges related to the attack.
