Geology Department warns 13 provinces of landslide risk amid heavy rain

Geology Department warns 13 provinces of landslide risk

BANGKOK1 July 2026, Thailand’s Department of Mineral Resources has warned of possible landslides and flash floods in 13 provinces over the next two to three days due to persistent heavy rain.

The Department’s Geohazard Operations Center issued the alert, urging its volunteer monitoring network and residents in at-risk areas to remain vigilant between 1–3 July 2026.

The provinces under the warning are Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Tak, Nan, Phitsanulok, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi and Trang.

The department said a monsoon trough stretching across northern Thailand and the upper Northeast, combined with a strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand, is expected to bring continued heavy rainfall.

Rainfall has already exceeded 100 millimetres in some areas over the past 24 hours, with flash floods beginning in several locations, increasing the risk of landslides.

Authorities have instructed geohazard monitoring volunteers to closely monitor rainfall, remain on alert, warn local communities of any landslide or flash flood threats, notify relevant agencies and follow established emergency response plans.

Host bar worker dies in Pattaya fire at unlicensed venue

Host bar worker dies in Pattaya fire at unlicensed venue

PATTAYA — A 28-year-old employee was killed after becoming trapped in a fire that tore through an unlicensed host bar in Pattaya early on 1 July 2026, authorities said.

The Pattaya City Land Disaster Relief Radio Center received a report of the blaze at 00:16. The fire broke out at the Catwalk entertainment venue in Soi Chalerm Phrakiat 29, Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province.

Police from Pattaya City Police Station, Bang Lamung district administrative officials, Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan rescue workers and firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

The fire engulfed the pub-style host bar, sending thick smoke billowing into the air. Firefighters deployed three fire engines to contain the blaze. A private groundwater delivery truck passing nearby also joined the effort by supplying water to help extinguish the flames.

It took firefighters more than 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Investigators found the fire had started near the venue’s entrance. Inside, they discovered the body of Thanaphon Boonchan, 28, an employee of the bar. He was found dead beneath a table after apparently being unable to escape as the flames spread.

Somchai Nawacharoen, 63, the owner of the groundwater delivery truck, said he had been making a delivery to a nearby business when he spotted the fire and immediately reversed his vehicle to help firefighters by spraying water on the flames.

Other employees told police they received a phone call from a colleague who was inside the venue reporting the fire. They rushed to the scene, where a worker said the blaze appeared to begin near the roof before spreading toward the exit. Everyone attempted to flee, but the victim was not seen leaving and is believed to have been trapped inside.

A preliminary investigation found the entertainment venue was operating without a licence. Authorities also said the victim was unable to escape because the fire blocked the main exit, while the premises had no emergency exit.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Forensic police will conduct a detailed examination to establish the origin of the blaze.

Nearly 100 monkeys escape enclosure in Lopburi overnight

Nearly 100 monkeys escape enclosure in Lopburi overnight

LOPBURI — 30 June 2026, Nearly 100 monkeys escaped from a municipal animal enclosure in Lopburi overnight, prompting a large-scale operation by officials to recapture the animals after they entered nearby residential areas.

The escape was reported on the morning of 30 June 2026 at the Lopburi Municipality Animal Nursery in Pho Kao Ton subdistrict, Mueang Lopburi district. The monkeys had been placed under the municipality’s care by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

Officials said the monkeys broke through part of the enclosure and escaped. Staff managed to prevent more than 1,000 other monkeys housed in the same facility from getting out.

Following the report, Lopburi Mayor Chamroen Salacheep ordered municipal officers and relevant agencies to launch an urgent operation to recapture the escaped monkeys before they could cause further disruption to nearby communities.

Lopburi Governor Weeraphong Ritrod, along with deputy governors, district officials, municipal authorities, DNP personnel, provincial livestock officials and other agencies, met at the site to coordinate the operation.

Officials have gradually recaptured some of the monkeys, while another team repaired and reinforced the damaged enclosure. Some dominant monkeys proved difficult to catch and required tranquiliser darts, while cages baited with food were placed around the area to lure others back.

news143738 lkK0B8wx9L1782810524

The governor said the damaged enclosure had been repaired and strengthened to prevent further escapes. As a long-term solution, authorities plan to build a more secure double-layer enclosure designed to keep dominant monkeys from breaking out. The province is also preparing to establish a foundation to help support food costs and improve the monkeys’ welfare.

The mayor said some monkeys had voluntarily returned to the enclosure, while others remained nearby. He suggested the escape may have been driven by hunger, heat, overcrowding or a desire to roam freely.

He also apologised to residents affected by the incident and said officials would survey any damage. Residents whose property was affected were urged to report it so authorities could provide appropriate assistance.

Squishy craze returns, raising safety and plastic waste concerns

Squishy craze returns, raising safety and plastic waste concerns

The stress-relief toy known as the “squishy” has made a comeback on TikTok and other social media platforms, with users reviewing, collecting and promoting a wide range of designs. The toys are now widely available through online marketplaces, retail stores and stalls near schools.

The renewed trend has also prompted concerns over product quality and safety, particularly for cheap, unbranded or counterfeit items. While no widespread safety issue has been confirmed in Thailand, recent enforcement actions in the United Kingdom have highlighted potential risks linked to some non-compliant products.

On 8 June, Trading Standards officers in Glasgow seized more than 5,900 counterfeit squishy toys from a warehouse after finding many lacked mandatory UKCA or CE conformity markings. Officials warned that some products could contain hazardous chemicals, including formaldehyde, phthalates and industrial solvents, which may cause skin irritation, nausea, headaches and respiratory problems after prolonged contact or inhalation.

On 24 June, Gloucestershire Trading Standards in England seized another 1,968 non-compliant squishy toys. Authorities also warned against a viral social media trend encouraging users to heat the toys in microwave ovens, saying the material could overheat, rupture and cause burns.

Screenshot 2026 06 30 161902 0

On 25 June, the UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards recalled certain batches of Squeezy Dumplings toys after laboratory tests found benzene levels in the outer material at four times the legal limit. Consumers were advised to stop using the affected products immediately and return them for a refund. Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen when exposure occurs at high levels or over extended periods.

In Thailand, no official recalls involving squishy toys have been announced. However, the recent overseas cases have prompted discussion among consumers about the safety of products sold through online platforms and general retailers, particularly those without Thai-language labels, manufacturer details or clear safety information. Consumer advocates have also called for closer monitoring of toys popular among children and teenagers.

Environmental concerns have also emerged. Many squishy toys are made from polyurethane foam or thermoplastic rubber, both plastic-based materials that do not easily biodegrade. If the current wave of popularity proves short-lived, discarded toys could add to plastic waste.

Some collectors note that squishy toys have been on the market for more than a decade but have regained popularity largely because of social media. They recommend buying products from reputable brands that comply with recognised safety standards, even if they are more expensive, to reduce the risk of purchasing poorly manufactured or counterfeit items.

Fans say squishies remain harmless toys and collectibles when purchased from reliable sources and used as intended. The recent enforcement actions overseas have nevertheless served as a reminder that consumers should pay attention to product quality rather than price or appearance alone.

Experts say consumers can reduce potential risks by purchasing toys from reputable retailers, checking for manufacturer information and recognised safety certifications, and avoiding products with unusually strong chemical odours, peeling paint or missing labels. These precautions are particularly important when buying toys for young children.

Squishy toys may remain popular as collectibles and stress-relief items, but the latest craze has highlighted the need for safer products, clearer labelling and more responsible consumption.

Award-winning Thai teacher arrested in student abuse case

Award-winning Thai teacher arrested in student abuse case

CHIANG MAI — 30 June 2026, A disciplinary teacher at a well-known school in Chiang Mai has been arrested after a female student and her family sought help from the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women over allegations that he had groomed and sexually abused her on multiple occasions. Thailand’s Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has also ordered his dismissal from the civil service.

Pavena Hongsakul, president of the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, said the victim’s mother brought her daughter to the foundation on Thursday, alleging that the suspect, a disciplinary teacher and recipient of a distinguished teacher award, had groomed and sexually abused the student on multiple occasions. He is also accused of coercing her into sending inappropriate images through chat messages.

The victim’s mother said she only became aware of the situation after information circulated on social media. She later accompanied her daughter to file a police complaint at Fang Police Station on 18 June, and the girl underwent medical examinations as part of the investigation. The mother added that her daughter is currently suffering from severe psychological trauma.

The mother further alleged that after the complaint was filed, several people contacted her in an attempt to persuade the family to withdraw the case or enter mediation, claiming that local influential figures could act as intermediaries. The family refused, insisting on full legal prosecution, and submitted all relevant evidence to investigators.

The Pavena Foundation coordinated with Chiang Mai Provincial Police and officers at Fang Police Station to closely monitor the case. Investigators later gathered sufficient evidence to seek an arrest warrant for the suspect, which was approved by the court.

Police charged the teacher with multiple offences related to the sexual abuse of a minor before taking him to court for detention. Investigators opposed bail, and the court denied his temporary release, citing concerns that he could flee or interfere with evidence. He has since been remanded in custody and transferred to prison.

The Pavena Foundation said it will continue working with relevant agencies to provide support and rehabilitation to the victim while monitoring the progress of the case. Separately, OBEC has ordered the teacher’s dismissal from the civil service pending the outcome of both the criminal case and disciplinary proceedings.

Iraq to reopen embassy in Thailand to mark 70 years of diplomatic ties

The Cabinet on 30 June approved a proposal from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs allowing the Republic of Iraq to reopen its embassy in Thailand, marking a significant upgrade in bilateral relations as the two countries celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties.

Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said the decision follows Iraq’s continued request to restore its diplomatic mission in Bangkok after improvements in its domestic stability.

She said the reopening of the embassy will enhance coordination between the two countries and open new opportunities for cooperation, particularly in energy, trade and investment.

Iraq is the world’s fourth-largest oil producer, and Thai officials expect closer engagement in the energy sector as well as expanded trade links. Iraq is also an important export market for Thai rice.

The move is also expected to support tourism cooperation, as the number of Iraqi visitors to Thailand continues to rise. In 2025, Thailand recorded 15,644 Iraqi tourists, more than triple the previous year.

Officials said the embassy will further strengthen Thailand’s role as a regional hub for engagement with the Middle East, while improving consular services and facilitation for Iraqi nationals in Thailand.

Five dead, 15 missing in Myanmar jade mine collapse

Five dead, 15 missing in Myanmar jade mine collapse

YANGON — At least five people have been confirmed dead and 15 others remain missing after a landslide struck an abandoned jade mine in northern Myanmar, with continuous heavy rain hampering rescue efforts.

China’s Xinhua News Agency reported that the collapse occurred after persistent rainfall triggered a landslide at an abandoned jade mining site, causing piles of mining debris to give way.

According to The Global New Light of Myanmar, the landslide occurred in Hpakant township, Kachin State, on Sunday, 28 June 2026. As of the latest update, authorities had confirmed five fatalities, while around 15 people were still unaccounted for.

Local authorities, volunteer rescue groups and residents have continued search and rescue operations despite ongoing rain and the risk of further landslides. The bodies recovered from the site have been returned to their families.

Hpakant is home to some of the world’s highest-quality jade deposits and has long been prone to deadly landslides, particularly during the monsoon season. Reports said many local residents and migrant workers continue searching abandoned mines for leftover jade despite the significant danger.
