Swedish Man Found Dead in Pai Guesthouse, Cause Unknown

PAIA 46-year-old Swedish tourist was discovered dead in his room at a guesthouse in Pai, Mae Hong Son province, officials reported Saturday.

According to Ms. Warichaya Cha-um, Director of Mae Hong Son’s Tourism and Sports Office, the Tourist Assistance Center received notification from tourist police at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, regarding a foreign tourist found deceased at Mr. Chan Guesthouse located on the road behind the courthouse in Pai district.

The deceased was identified as Mr. Karl, a 46-year-old Swedish national who was traveling on a 60-day tourist visa.

Initial investigation by Pai police found no signs of physical trauma or evidence of struggle on the body. However, authorities noted needle marks in the right arm crease, and a syringe and cigarette butts were discovered near the body. The room showed no signs of disturbance or theft, with the deceased’s belongings appearing untouched.

Police have not yet determined the cause of death. The body will be transferred to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for a full autopsy to establish the exact cause of death.

Local authorities and the Tourist Assistance Center are coordinating efforts as the investigation continues.
