SURAT THANI — Police in Surat Thani have arrested a 56-year-old Norwegian man suspected of firing a crossbow at a fellow Norwegian woman while heavily intoxicated. The victim’s iPhone Mini took the hit, likely saving her life.
The incident occurred at 1:30 a.m. on June 19 in the living room of a residence in Koh Samui District, Surat Thani Province. Norwegian tourist Ms. Pia narrowly escaped being shot with a crossbow, with Mr. Simon serving as a witness while lying on a sofa watching a movie.
The suspect, identified as Mr. Elmer, had initially been drinking alcohol in his bedroom. After becoming heavily intoxicated, he emerged from his room shouting incoherently and displaying increasingly aggressive behavior. Fearing for her safety, Pia picked up her mobile phone to call police, dialing 191.

Elmer briefly returned to his room before coming back out armed with a black crossbow equipped with a laser sight. Simon, seated on the sofa, attempted to calm him down while Pia continued speaking with police officers on the phone. At that moment, Elmer raised the crossbow, aimed it at Pia’s head, and fired. The arrow struck her iPhone 12 Mini, which she was holding to her left ear, damaging the device. Elmer then fled the scene.
Investigators from Mueang Surat Thani Police Station gathered evidence and requested an arrest warrant from Koh Samui Provincial Court on charges of attempted murder. The court approved the warrant on June 23.
Arrest teams tracked down the suspect and found him aboard a van attempting to flee Surat Thani Province. He was apprehended at Surat Thani Bus Terminal and transferred to Samui Police Station investigators for prosecution.
