Massive blaze engulfs foam factory, firefighters battle flames for over an hour

Thick smoke and flames engulf a foam factory in Chon Buri, with firefighters racing to contain the fire.

CHON BURI — A large fire broke out at a foam-melting factory in Mu 3 of Ban Suan subdistrict, Mueang district, Chon Buri, on 2 February, prompting a major response from firefighters.

Police from Mueang Chon Buri station and municipal firefighters were alerted at about 12:00 and rushed to the scene, where flames were raging through a dirt yard stacked with large quantities of foam boxes. Dozens of fire engines were deployed to contain the blaze.

Firefighters battled the flames for more than an hour before bringing the fire under control and confining it to a limited area.

A factory worker, Kamdee Buayai, 49, said the fire was sparked by an apparent electrical short circuit, followed by sparks falling onto piled foam boxes, causing the fire to spread rapidly. Workers initially tried to put out the fire but were unable to control it due to the highly flammable materials, he said.

Police said they will conduct a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and take legal action if necessary.

Thailand to raise air departure passenger service charge from $23 to $35

Suvarnabhumi Airport, one of six airports operated by Airports of Thailand, where the air passenger service charge is set to rise, alongside Don Mueang, Phuket, Hat Yai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

BANGKOK — Airports of Thailand (AOT) plans to raise the international departure passenger service charge (PSC) to 1,120 baht per person by mid-2026 and is studying a new PSC for transit and transfer passengers in line with international practice, aiming to strengthen long-term revenue and fund major airport expansion projects.

AOT president Pavina Jariyathitipong said the Civil Aviation Board approved the departure PSC increase in principle on 3 December 2025, raising the fee from 730 baht by 390 baht, with formal enforcement expected mid-year pending transport ministerial approval. Studies indicate the increase will not affect travel decisions and is projected to lift AOT revenue by about 13 billion baht a year from fiscal 2027, funds earmarked primarily for investment, including the South Terminal project at Suvarnabhumi Airport, valued at over 200 billion baht, to reduce reliance on borrowing and interest costs.

Pavina said more than 90% of airports worldwide collect PSC from both departing and transit passengers, while Thailand is among the small minority that charges only departures, limiting revenue potential. AOT plans to propose regulatory changes to allow PSC collection from transit passengers after the new departure fee takes effect. The PSC increase will apply to AOT’s six airports, Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Hat Yai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai as Thailand moves to expand Suvarnabhumi’s capacity to 120 million passengers a year and advance its goal of becoming a regional aviation hub.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — A wild elephant from Khao Yai National Park killed a 69-year-old tourist at a park campsite early on 2 February 2026, marking the third fatal attack linked to the same bull, authorities said.

The incident occurred at about 05:30 at the campsite of the Khlong Pla Kang ranger unit in Wang Nam Khiao district. The victim, identified as Jiratchai Jiraphatboonyathorn, a Lopburi resident, had been camping in the area and went out for a morning walk when he encountered a wild bull elephant known as Plai Oi Wan, which had wandered outside the park.
