Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Anne Jakkaphong Over Fraud Case

BANGKOK — A Thai court has issued an arrest warrant for Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, the transgender celebrity businesswoman known as Anne Jakkaphong and former co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization, after she failed to appear for her verdict hearing in a fraud case involving 30 million baht (approximately $930,000).

The South Bangkok Criminal Court on Charoen Krung Road had scheduled the verdict reading for November 25, but Jakkaphong failed to appear without providing any explanation. The court ruled that her absence suggested she intended to evade justice and ordered her arrest.

The $903K Fraud Case

The case was filed by Dr. Raweewat Maschamadol against JKN Global Group Public Company Limited (defendant 1) and Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip (defendant 2) on charges of joint fraud through false representation and concealment of facts.

According to court documents, between July 24 and August 8, 2023, the defendants solicited the plaintiff to invest in corporate bonds despite knowing they could not repay the funds as promised due to the company’s poor financial position and inability to meet such obligations. Through this deception, the defendants obtained 30 million baht from the plaintiff.

The court found sufficient grounds to proceed with the case and allowed the second defendant to be released on bail with permission to have the case heard in absentia. After evidence from both sides was presented, the court scheduled the verdict for November 25.

When Jakkaphong failed to appear, the court ordered her arrest, ordered the full forfeiture of her bail bond, ordered the guarantor to pay the fine within 15 days, and rescheduled the verdict reading for December 26.

Financial Troubles and Miss Universe

Anne Jakkaphong made history as the first transgender woman to own the Miss Universe Organization when she purchased it for $20 million in October 2022. However, JKN Global subsequently faced severe financial problems as Thailand’s digital TV business collapsed, along with struggles in the dietary supplement sector.

The company began experiencing a financial crisis in September 2023 after failing to repay a stock loan. Jakkaphong and her sister were forced to sell their shares multiple times to manage mounting debts.

In January 2024, JKN Global announced it had sold a 50% stake in JKN Legacy Inc, which operated the Miss Universe Organization and owned the Miss Universe brand rights, to Mexico’s Legacy Holding Group USA Inc.

In April 2025, JKN announced the appointment of Nawat Itsaragrisil, CEO of the Miss Grand International Organization, as Executive Director of the Miss Universe Organization.

Anne Jakkaphong was forced to resign from all company positions on June 6, 2025, after being charged by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission. She subsequently stepped down from the Miss Universe Organization, with Raul Rocha Cantu serving as the sole President since then.

Recent Controversies

The November 2025 Miss Universe pageant was overshadowed by controversy when Nawat, who had assumed the role of chairman of the Miss Universe Thailand Host Committee, was accused of bullying Mexican contestant Fatima Bosch during a meeting attended by other contestants. Bosch confronted him and walked out, with numerous other contestants following her lead.

The incident prompted Raul Rocha to reduce Nawat’s role. Despite the turmoil, Fatima Bosch went on to win the Miss Universe 74th crown. The pageant was also shadowed by allegations of vote-rigging after two judges resigned before the final decision.

Allegations of Flight to Mexico

Around the same time, rumors emerged that Anne Jakkaphong had converted 6 billion baht ($186 million) into cryptocurrency and relocated to Mexico with assistance from the current president of the Miss Universe Organization and key business partners.

On November 24, JKN Global issued a statement denying these rumors, attributing delayed debt payments to economic slowdown and cash flow discrepancies rather than fraud. The company stated that investigations by government agencies are ongoing and that no wrongdoing has been established. JKN affirmed its commitment to transparent operations and cooperation with all parties.

The case continues to develop as authorities seek Anne Jakkaphong’s whereabouts ahead of the rescheduled December 26 verdict reading.

Thailand Tightens Visa-Run Controls, Denies Impact on Legitimate Tourism

Suvarnabhumi Airport

BANGKOK — Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has intensified border inspections targeting foreigners who abuse visa-exemption policies, dismissing claims the crackdown will harm legitimate tourism.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Choengron Rimphadee, immigration bureau spokesperson, said Monday that officers at land and air checkpoints have stepped up scrutiny of travelers making repeated short-term entries. He accused operators profiting from “visa-run” services of spreading misinformation on social media, alleging the measures would damage tourism and alarm genuine visitors from countries including China, Singapore, South Korea and Russia.

The crackdown targets foreigners of all nationalities exploiting visa-exemption schemes that allow 90-day stays, Choengron said. Some travelers exit briefly before re-entering for another extended stay, with cases showing more than seven entries totaling over 200 days in Thailand.

“These individuals are not coming to Thailand for tourism,” Choengron said. Many work illegally, operate businesses or use Thai nominees to run companies while avoiding proper visa applications, leaving no official record for labor, commercial or tax oversight.

Authorities also aim to prevent call-center gang members from neighboring countries, displaced by recent crackdowns, from relocating to Thailand through visa-exemption entries. Several arrests have revealed suspects with repeated visa-run patterns.

Choengron rejected claims immigration would specifically target tourists from 16 countries, particularly Chinese nationals. The measures apply to any nationality making more than two consecutive entries of at least 45 days each.

Officers will verify accommodation, return tickets and travel plans for those showing irregular patterns before deciding whether to grant entry. Those denied will be sent back and advised to apply for appropriate visas.

Deputy Commissioner and spokesperson for the Immigration Bureau Pol. Maj. Gen. Choengron Rimpadee

The measures help identify genuine tourists who benefit Thailand’s economy, Choengron said. Statistics show legitimate tourists typically stay 15 days with clear itineraries and face no issues.

Foreign arrivals, especially from China and India, continued rising in November, with airports averaging 115,000 daily arrivals. Suvarnabhumi Airport handles about 73,000 daily, followed by Don Mueang and Phuket. Wait times during peak hours reach 40 minutes, but automated channels will expand to include visa holders by year-end to ease congestion.

Immigration Commissioner Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanumat Boonyalak defended the policy as necessary for proper border management aligned with international standards.

“If we focus solely on convenience and boosting headline tourist numbers without proper scrutiny, Thailand will face national security risks and criticism for becoming a haven for foreigners staying illegally,” Choengron said.

Chinese Public ‘Deeply Impressed’ by Thai Royals’ Visit, Ambassador Says

King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida attend a state banquet hosted in their honor by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan in Beijing on Nov. 14, 2025.

BANGKOK — China’s ambassador to Thailand said on Monday that the Chinese public was deeply impressed by the official visit of Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida to Beijing earlier this month, calling the trip a milestone in bilateral relations as both countries mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

Ambassador Zhang Jianwei delivered a report on the November 13–17 visit, the first by a reigning Thai monarch to China, describing it as “a magnificent success” and a reflection of the “sincere cooperation” between government agencies in both countries.

Strengthening Political Ties

Zhang said President Xi Jinping held extensive talks with the king, and the two leaders reached key agreements to guide the next phase of China-Thailand relations. Both sides pledged to advance the “China-Thailand Community with a Shared Future,” expand cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy and aerospace, and deepen strategic alignment.

The king, in remarks during the visit, praised the long-standing relationship as “brotherly cooperation” and said Thailand hoped to learn from China’s development experience.

Diplomatic and Cultural Highlights

Zhang said one of the most memorable moments was the warm personal interaction between Xi and the king, including a discussion about the history and architecture of Tiananmen Square and an explanation of murals inside the Great Hall of the People.

At a state banquet, the royal composition “Klaikrung” (“Near Dawn”) was played throughout the hall, which Zhang said symbolized the closeness between the two nations.

The king also visited the Smart Robot Innovation Center, the China Academy of Space Technology, the Astronaut Training Center, and observed a remote English-language class via a smart education platform. Cultural activities included laying a wreath at the Monument to the People’s Heroes, paying respects to a Buddha tooth relic at Lingguang Temple, and opening the China-Thailand Cultural Artifacts Exhibition at the Palace Museum.

Respect Amid Mourning

Zhang said the Chinese side was particularly moved that the king proceeded with the trip despite Thailand’s period of national mourning following the death of Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother. Chinese hosts adjusted protocols, including wearing dark attire, to reflect respect for the Thai delegation.

Public Reaction in China

The ambassador said the king and queen received significant public attention in China, with their visit generating praise online and boosting interest in Thai tourism.

Her Majesty’s refined and elegant style drew wide praise from Chinese netizens during the trip, with her poised appearance at each engagement becoming one of the visit’s highlights.

“The prestige and capability of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn and the beautiful and elegant demeanor of Her Majesty the Queen made a great impression on Chinese netizens, attracting a large number of admirers,” Zhang said. “The visit brought the hearts of the two peoples closer and reinforced the idea that ‘China and Thailand are one family.’”

Zhang said the royal trip filled a “historical gap” in the bilateral relationship and laid a stronger foundation for cooperation over the next five decades.

Interpol-Listed Swedish Nabbed in Pattaya While Using Fake German ID

Immigration Division 3 officers arrest a Swedish fugitive wanted on an Interpol Red Notice in Pattaya on November 24, 2025.

PATTAYA — Thai immigration police have arrested a Swedish man wanted on an Interpol Red Notice for a major arson case in Sweden, authorities said Tuesday.

Immigration Division 3 officers took the suspect — identified only as a Swedish national wanted in connection with an arson attack in Sävsjö — into custody in Pattaya on November 24 after receiving information from international partners that he had fled to Thailand and was hiding in the resort city, police said.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Songprot Sirisukha, commander of Immigration Division 3, said officers tracked the man down after noticing he matched the description on the arrest warrant. Police said the suspect admitted his identity and was also found to have overstayed his visa.

Investigators said the man had allegedly used fake German identification cards and driver’s licenses to check into hotels and conduct transactions in an attempt to avoid detection.

The arrest follows a directive from the Royal Thai Police to tighten screening measures and crack down on transnational crime as tourism rebounds. Authorities said the case demonstrates Thailand’s effort to ensure the country is not used as a refuge for fugitives.

The suspect was handed over to Pattaya police to face overstay charges, and immigration officials said they are coordinating with the Swedish Embassy on extradition procedures.

Myanmar State Television Broadcasts Army Crackdown on Scam Centers

Shwe Phee Myay News Agency

BANGKOK (AP) — Myanmar’s military government has begun broadcasting extensive video on state television of its crackdown on online scam centers, showing buildings being bulldozed and over 1,000 foreigners detained.

Myanmar is notorious for hosting cyberscam operations that target people all over the world. They usually involve gaining a person’s confidence with romantic ploys and luring them into bogus investment schemes. The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime has estimated that such activities generate just under $40 billion in annual revenue for criminal gangs.

The unusual length and detail of the reports beginning late last week on MRTV television appear to reflect the military government’s desire to publicize its efforts after months of bad publicity and international pressure. It is already ostracized by many nations for seizing power from Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government in 2021 and brutally fighting opponents.

The authorities recently raided two major scam centers, KK Park and Shwe Kokko, on the outskirts of Myawaddy, a trading town on the border with Thailand.

Myanmar’s Ministry of Information

The latest operation, which began on Nov. 18 in Shwe Kokko, resulted in the arrest of 1,746 foreigners in six days, according to a report on Monday in Myanma Alinn and other state-run newspapers.

There were other crackdowns earlier this year. Monday’s reports said a total of 12,586 foreigners have been detained since the end of January and 9,978 of them were deported to their home countries through Thailand. Some foreigners, from African nations and elsewhere, have reported being tricked into working at the centers and being blocked from leaving them.

The reports said authorities confiscated 2,893 computers, 21,750 mobile phones, 101 Starlink satellite communications devices, 21 internet routers and a large quantity of other equipment used to carry out online fraud and gambling activities at Shwe Kokko.

MRTV television has been broadcasting daily videos of security forces sweeping through buildings without resistance, as well as footage of foreign detainees in Shwe Kokko being made to squat in line.

shwe kokko2

The videos also showed buildings in KK Park, raided in mid-October, being demolished by explosives and bulldozed, with hundreds of computers crushed under a steamroller.

The military government says it began its crackdown on online scams and illegal gambling in early September. However, critics charge that the masterminds of the scam operations continue to operate in other locations.

Ethnic minority militias also exercise strong influence in the Myawaddy area. Several ethnic Karen militias are active, including the military-backed Border Guard Force, which has signed a ceasefire with the army, and the Karen National Union, which is part of the nationwide resistance fight against military rule.

The Border Guard Force has claimed credit for taking part in the crackdown, though it is widely believed to have provided protection for scam operators in the past. The military government has claimed the KNU is linked to the scam centers on the basis of reported real estate deals.

Both groups have denied involvement in the scam operations.

Côte d’Ivoire Beauty Quits Miss Universe Role, Citing Her Values

Olivia Yacé posts photos accompanying her statement announcing her resignation as Miss Universe Africa and Oceania on Nov. 24, 2025.

BANGKOK — Olivia Yacé of Côte d’Ivoire has resigned her title as Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, five days after placing fourth runner-up at the Miss Universe 2025 pageant in Bangkok. Her announcement, issued in a statement dated Nov. 24, comes as the competition faces growing controversy over alleged misconduct and judging irregularities.

Yacé, considered one of the favorites to win after previously placing second runner-up at Miss World 2022, said she was stepping down to remain “true to my values: respect, dignity, excellence, and equal opportunity.”

“With a heart full of gratitude and profound respect, I hereby announce my resignation from the title of Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, as well as from any future affiliation with the Miss Universe Committee,” she wrote. Yacé said she hoped to continue serving as a role model for young women and communities of African descent, adding, “Our presence matters, and our voices must be heard.”

Many pageant followers had expected Yacé to finish higher, noting the strength of her answers in both final rounds. Her fifth-place result drew criticism online, particularly among fans who said she outperformed most of the top five.

The 74th Miss Universe pageant in Thailand has been marred by disputes. Tensions escalated after a confrontation between eventual winner Fátima Bosch of Mexico and Thai pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil during a pre-pageant activity. Several contestants accused the Thai organizing team of disrespectful behavior, leading some to walk out.

Miss Universe Organization President Raul Rocha Cantú later scaled back Itsaragrisil’s role. The turmoil deepened when two judges from France and Lebanon withdrew days before the final, claiming the outcome had been predetermined. Criticism continued after the broadcast.

Former Miss Universe Natalie Glebova, who won the crown in 2005, said she “will never be participating as a judge again,” citing the absence of an onstage auditor this year. “When I competed in 2005 and years prior, I recall there was always an auditor who came on stage with sealed results from an accounting firm,” she wrote. “I’d like to bring that back please.”

Yacé ended her statement by congratulating the new Miss Universe and wishing Miss Universe Jamaica a speedy recovery. “I will now continue my journey differently,” she wrote. “It’s time for Africa.”

Chinese Man Caught Selling Russian-Sourced Drugs on Koh Phangan

Thai authorities arrest a Chinese suspect for selling drugs to tourists at a house in Ban Tai subdistrict, Koh Phangan, on November 24, 2025.

KOH PHANGAN — Police on Koh Phangan have arrested a Chinese man accused of entering Thailand illegally and selling drugs to tourists on the island after allegedly purchasing the narcotics from a Russian supplier, authorities said Monday.

Yunlong, 40, was taken into custody on November 24 at a house in Moo 1 of Ban Tai subdistrict, where officers from Koh Phangan Police Station and immigration police said they had observed a constant stream of foreigners entering and leaving the property. When officers arrived to conduct a search, Yunlong attempted to run inside and block the door but was quickly detained.

Police said a search of the residence uncovered 285 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 96 ecstasy pills, 4.8 grams of MDMA, a quantity of LSD “stamps,” and various drug-taking equipment.

Authorities launched the investigation after receiving a tip that a foreign national had slipped into the country illegally and was selling drugs in tourist areas. Surveillance of the house led officers to believe the suspect was involved in ongoing drug sales.

Police said Yunlong admitted he had crossed into Thailand illegally from Cambodia, paying a broker 20,000 baht ($615) to guide him through a natural border crossing. He also told investigators that he bought the drugs from a Russian national via the Telegram messaging app and resold them to tourists in Koh Phangan’s party zones.

Officials said the case highlights the growing use of Telegram as a marketplace for illicit drugs and the expanding links among foreign criminal networks operating in Thailand’s tourism hubs.

Yunlong has been charged with possession of Type 1 narcotics (ecstasy, LSD and MDMA) and Type 5 narcotics (psilocybin mushrooms) with intent to sell, and with illegal entry into the kingdom.

Why Southern Thailand Is Facing Severe Flooding Now

Thai rescue crew on boat move past a car submerged in floodwaters in Songkhla province, southern Thailand, Monday, Nov. 24, 2025. (AP Photo)

BANGKOK — Widespread flooding continues to batter southern Thailand, where days of torrential rain have inundated entire districts, displaced hundreds of thousands and pushed some areas to crisis levels, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

As of November 24, floodwaters have hit 10 southern provinces — including Surat Thani, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat — covering 92 districts and more than 4,100 villages. DDPM said 1.9 million people in roughly 720,000 households have been affected, and water levels in several areas continue to rise.

hatyai flood3
Rising floodwaters continue to swell across Hat Yai District in Songkhla, with levels expected to peak on the morning of Nov. 25, 2025.

Flooding has also persisted in parts of the northern and central regions, where overflowing rivers have affected 11 provinces. Authorities said water levels there are generally receding, but more than 480,000 people have been impacted.

The Smart Water Operation Center (SWOC) of the Royal Irrigation Department disclosed that the cause of the severe floods in the South is due to the influence of the monsoon trough and low-pressure cell covering the South and lower South since November 19, 2025, until the present.

For Songkhla province, heavy rain covered all areas, especially in Hat Yai district, where the highest rainfall was measured on November 21, at 335 mm., which is the heaviest rainfall in 300 years.

hatyai flood1
Rising floodwaters continue to swell across Hat Yai District in Songkhla, with levels expected to peak on the morning of Nov. 25, 2025.

Meanwhile, floodwaters continued climbing Sunday night, November 23, as more runoff from the U-Taphao Canal pushed toward the city and additional rain fell across the basin.

DDPM said water levels could peak at 1.25 to 1.45 meters on November 25, with the highest levels expected around 6 a.m. Officials have issued the highest warning and prepared evacuation plans for at-risk communities.

Geography, Weather and Poor Preparedness

Environmental expert Sonthi Kotchawat of the Thai Environmental Scholars Association said the South is experiencing one of its most severe natural disasters in years. All 16 districts of Songkhla Province are flooded, affecting about 150,000 households, and Hat Yai is facing its worst flooding since 2000. Economic losses have already surpassed 500 million baht ($15.4 million), he said.

Sonthi pointed to three key factors:

Geography

Hat Yai sits on low-lying terrain that slopes toward Songkhla Lake, making it naturally prone to flooding, especially when water levels in the lake rise. The U-Taphao Canal — a 116-kilometer waterway that runs from Sadao District through central Hat Yai — funnels water from multiple tributaries toward the lake. The R.1 Canal, built after the 2000 flood as a royal project, helps divert part of this flow to speed drainage.

phatthalung flood1
Runoff from the Bantad Mountain Range surges into canals and spills into homes in Phatthalung Province on Nov. 24, 2025.

But water from several directions — including runoff from Khao Kho Hong and streams descending from the Nakhon Si Thammarat mountain range — all converge into the U-Taphao Canal before passing through Hat Yai.

Extreme Weather

A high-pressure system from China combined with a low-pressure monsoon trough and La Niña conditions to produce days of intense rainfall. From November 19–22, accumulated rainfall reached 595 millimeters, surpassing historic peaks recorded in 2000 and 2010. Khao Kho Hong alone saw 365 millimeters of rain on November 22.

That runoff surged into waterways feeding the U-Taphao Canal, overwhelming drainage systems and spilling into Hat Yai’s urban core.

Inadequate Water Management and Emergency Response

Sonthi said Thailand’s water management has been “far below standard” this year, pointing to widespread flooding across all regions despite early warnings of a volatile La Niña season.

Although disaster alerts were issued one to two days in advance, response efforts have lagged, he said, with many southern residents still stranded without supplies as rescue teams struggle to reach them.

hatyai flood2
Floodwaters inundate Hat Yai Hospital in Songkhla Province on Nov. 24, 2025.

Unusual Rainfall Pattern

Asst. Prof. Dr. Somporn Chuayaree of Prince of Songkla University, an expert on southern weather and natural disasters, told BBC Thai that Hat Yai’s flooding this year is different from past events.

He said that after the 2000 flood, the R.1 diversion canal effectively reduced flooding from upstream areas like Sadao and Khlong Hoi Khong. But this year, the heaviest rainfall struck Khao Kho Hong — a mountain range east of the city that does not drain into the diversion canal. Instead, the water rushed directly into Hat Yai’s urban zones along steep slopes.

Combined with torrential rain that also fell directly on the city, the result was the severe, city-centered flooding now unfolding.
