SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Han Jong-Hee, a senior Samsung Electronics executive credited with elevating the company’s television business, died Tuesday, the company said. He was 63.

Han, a co-chief executive who oversaw the company’s consumer electronics and mobile devices businesses, died at a hospital after being treated for cardiac arrest, Samsung said.

Han joined Samsung in 1988 and spent most of his career in TV-related divisions, during which the company became the world’s leading TV manufacturer. He was appointed co-vice chairman and CEO in 2022.

Samsung, one of the world’s largest technology companies, has dual strengths in components and finished consumer products. The company had separate CEOs for its two major business divisions, the other being computer chips, which are all under the broader leadership of third-generation corporate heir and chairman Lee Jae-yong.

Jun Young Hyun, the semiconductor chief executive, will now take over Han’s duties as the company’s sole CEO, Samsung said in a regulatory filing.

Thai PM Confidently Responds to First No-Confidence Debate

BANGKOKPrime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra confidently responded to opposition accusations during the first day of a no-confidence motion on Monday. With composure and a controlled demeanor, the 38-year-old PM demonstrated what she calls her “Gen-Y Prime Minister” style, offering brief but impactful rebuttals.

The highlight covered by both mainstream media and social platforms was her first stand to address accusations from General Prawit Wongsuwan, head of the Palang Pracharath Party and Pheu Thai’s former coalition partner. When accused of falsely declaring her assets, Paetongtarn referenced the general’s own controversial past involving “borrowed watches” scandal.

“According to my own watch, the senior member has been speaking for 10 minutes with content that is completely untrue,” she remarked before promptly sitting down. This statement mirrored General Prawit’s own brief response during a no-confidence debate when he served as deputy prime minister in 2021.

“I Have Paid More Taxes”

The opposition’s overall strategy focused on allegations that Paetongtarn was being unduly influenced by her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Critics centered their attacks on Shinawatra family business dealings, land purchases, and tax avoidance claims.

In response to fiery accusations from Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, a People’s Party MP who claimed she evaded taxes, the Prime Minister firmly stated: “On the contrary, although I am younger than the debater, I am confident that I have paid more taxes to the state than he has.”

Addressing allegations regarding the purchase of land later developed into the Alpine Golf Course, which was allegedly monastic property, Paetongtarn pointed out that this occurred when she was just 11 years old and not a company director. She emphasized that all family land purchases were properly documented with legal titles issued by government agencies, and any subsequent legal disputes were left to the justice system.

Deal to Bring Thaksin Home

Other accusations against Paetongtarn included failures to address chronic problems such as the slumping economy, air pollution, crime, and corruption. Critics claimed her administration was ineffective because she was serving family interests rather than the country’s, with the opposition framing the debate under the theme “Trading the Country in a Deal.”

Natthapong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the People’s Party (the successor to the dissolved Move Forward Party that won the most seats in the 2023 election), suggested that Pheu Thai’s coalition with former conservative rivals was part of a political bargain to bring Thaksin home. Government supporters countered that Pheu Thai had fully supported the Move Forward Party leader’s bid for prime minister, but Move Forward itself couldn’t form a government.

40 Uyghurs’ Deportation

A significant international issue raised during the debate concerned the deportation of 40 Uyghurs who had been detained in Thailand for over a decade. While the Prime Minister delegated responses on this matter, Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong, who led Thai officials on a visit to Xinjiang last week, defended the decision.

Kannavee Suebsang, leader of the Fair Party, criticized the deportation as damaging Thailand’s neutrality between major powers and drawing condemnation from the United States and European nations.

The Justice Minister explained that detention conditions were inhumane, comparing them to animal cages holding over a thousand people, with four deaths already recorded. He stated that all deportees had volunteered to return after video communications with previously deported Uyghurs, and invited critics to verify this through official information requests.

“Even though we face pressure from major powers, providing 40 people with better lives represents justice and human dignity,” Tawee said. “I regret that some speakers use derogatory language—not just against me, but against people who now have better lives and against China, a UN power that you accuse of cruelty.”

PHANG NGAImmigration authorities in Phang Nga province arrested a 64-year-old German national who attempted to escape through a window during a raid on Monday, March 24.

The suspect, identified only as Reiner, had been living illegally in Thailand for four months in the Thaimuang district of Phang Nga, officials said.

According to Immigration officers, Reiner had previously been deported from Thailand. Following intelligence reports, authorities tracked him to a residence in Moo 1, Thaimuang district, where he was found to be staying without proper documentation.

When officers arrived at the property and identified themselves as Immigration officials, Reiner refused to exit the house and attempted to flee through a bedroom window. Officers quickly apprehended him after a brief pursuit.

Upon inspection of his passport, authorities found entry stamps for Malaysia but no valid entry permit for Thailand. Reiner confessed to authorities that he had traveled from Germany to Malaysia on July 4, 2024. From there, he flew to Penang before taking a boat to Langkawi. He then used a long-tail boat to enter Thailand illegally, followed by several bus rides to reach Thaimuang.

The German national claimed he had returned to Thailand to visit his ailing mother, who subsequently passed away. Despite this, he continued to stay at the residence for four months without returning to Germany.

Immigration officials have charged Reiner with entering the Kingdom without permission. He has been handed over to Thaimuang Police Station for legal proceedings under Thai immigration law.

The arrest was made according to a warrant issued by the South Bangkok District Court on February 21, 2025.

The victim later returned to Japan to file charges, resulting in another arrest warrant being issued by Japanese authorities.

The suspect most recently entered Thailand on September 19, 2024, through Don Mueang Airport. Police also discovered video evidence related to ransom demands, including footage showing knife cuts to an ear, and conversations about ransom demands and death threats. Trat’s Island Trio Sees Tourism Surge Ahead of Songkran Festival

Trat
Tourist numbers to Trat Province have sustained growth in both Thai and international visitors, reflecting the province's success in promoting sustainable tourism.

TRAT — Tourist numbers to Thailand’s Trat province, particularly its three main islands—Koh Chang, Koh Kood, and Koh Mak—have increased significantly since December 2024 through the New Year 2025 period. This sustained growth in both Thai and international visitors reflects the province’s success in promoting sustainable tourism.

Taweesak Wongwilat, Vice President of the Trat Tourism Business Association, reports that international tourists are now booking extended stays of 1-2 weeks. The number of foreign visitors has increased by more than 40% compared to 2024.

“This growth can be attributed to promotional efforts across multiple channels, especially the ongoing campaigns by the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Eastern Region and Trat offices since 2024,” Wongwilat explained.

Koh Chang Bookings Reach Over 80%

Early 2025 initiatives included bringing European tourism operators and influencers to the province to attract international visitors. Most recently, tourist groups from Oman in the Middle East traveled to Koh Chang, boosting the promotion of Trat’s attractions and generating substantial revenue for the province.

koh chang
Koh Chang

“What’s clearly evident is that hotel bookings for the Songkran period in Koh Chang district have already reached over 80%, particularly from international tourists,” noted Wongwilat. Foreign visitors have established online groups showcasing Trat’s attractions, highlighting the beauty of both the sea and forest areas in Koh Chang National Park, as well as the popular “Wan Lai” festivities during Songkran.

“While Thai and international tourists typically flock to these events each year, this year we’re seeing earlier arrivals, increased bookings, and longer stays,” he added.

Mainland Trat Also Seeing Growth

Wararat Chottiwan, owner of Trat City Hotel and committee member of the Trat Tourism Industry Council, said that mainland Trat has also seen consistent hotel bookings. “While the increase isn’t dramatic, it’s better than previous years, thanks to joint efforts by private and public tourism sectors to make the province more attractive to visitors,” she said.
The continuous tourism promotion activities from late 2024 into early 2025, including the various Songkran festivals organized throughout the province, have enhanced Trat’s tourism appeal.

Impressive Tourism Statistics

Acting Lt. Korakot Opas, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Trat Office, reported that tourism in Trat has shown steady growth during the first three months of 2025. For the April 2025 Songkran festival period, projected visitor numbers continue to grow:

  • Total visitors: 19,980
  • Tourists (with overnight stays): 19,200
  • Excursionists (day visitors): 780
  • Average occupancy rate: 82.09%
  • Average hotel stay: 1.98 nights
  • Revenue generation: 142-200 million baht
  • Average expenditure per trip: 7,107 baht
  • Available rooms: 11,299
  • Tourist to excursionist ratio: 96:4

April 2025 includes extended holidays for Chakri Day and the Songkran festival, boosting tourist numbers, especially Thai visitors. Various districts are hosting Songkran activities from April 12-26, 2025, with the final “Wan Lai” celebrations scheduled for April 25-26 in Laem Ngop district, which is expected to draw large crowds.

Top VOA Journo Steven Herman Speak Out

VOA
(Photo from Steven Herman)

Khaosod English’s Pravit Rojanaphruk submitted 5 questions to Voice of America’s top Journalist Steven L Herman regarding the suspension of the VOA by US President Donald Trump.

Pravit: Trump’s camp accuses the VOA of propagating leftist and liberal ideologies. Is that the case?

Herman: Every script at VOA – TV, radio or text – is reviewed by at least two editors. If it touches on politics, then there’s a third editor, a balance editor. A TV piece would have additional editors looking at it following production.

Accusations of bias have been heard for decades, from across the political spectrum. VOA is one of the few news organizations mandated by law to be balanced and objective. Our charter compels us to present both sides of issues. Anyone can review VOA content on our website, which hopefully will remain online. (voanews.com)

Pravit: Did you expect this to happen? Why, or why not?

Herman: We certainly expected change. The signals were clear. We were involved in a fight some years back against political appointees who wanted to bust through our firewall that prevents interference in our journalism by even those running our parent agency. We prevailed in court and there were independent reports subsequently issued outlining, to summarize, we were on the correct side in resisting the interference. So, there’s legal precedent there upholding the charter and the firewall.

Bloody Saturday (Feb. 15) saw everyone at VOA placed on indefinite paid leave. The move effectively and quickly silenced all of our 49 language services, cutting off our communication with 360 million people, something that has never happened in VOA’s 83 years of existence.

Pravit: How does this impact America’s softpower?

Herman: VOA is perceived as a powerful and cost-efficient tool of America’s soft power for the cost of a couple of hard power fighter jets. VOA is not just a brand but an indispensable resource for millions and millions of people who rely on us for timely and accurate news and information not only about the United States, but their countries or regions as well. With VOA silenced, the void will be filled by voices of Beijing and Moscow.

Pravit: Some Thais rejoiced as they view the VOA as a propaganda tool of the so-called US imperialism or hegemonic power. What would you like to say to them?

Herman: I am willing to bet that any objective analysis of VOA’s content would conclude our journalism is objective and comprehensive, especially compared to that of state-funded broadcasters in other countries. When I am asked if I have a bias, I respond yes: I am biased in favor of democracy.

Pravit: On a personal note, how is it affecting you and what’s your career plan now?

Herman: Even though I remain VOA’s chief national correspondent I cannot do any reporting and VOA may or may not exist by the time your readers see this. I am keeping very busy consulting with lawyers, discussing developments with my colleagues and giving interviews like this one. I really haven’t had time for job hunting!

I have mused maybe retirement in Chiang Rai would be nice. But I am hoping that is decision is still more than a few years away.

ONYX Hospitality Group, a prominent management company in Southeast Asia specialising in hotels and resorts, serviced apartments and luxury residences, is driven by its vision to be “The Best Medium-Sized Hospitality Management Company in Southeast Asia.” Beyond accommodations, ONYX Hospitality Group also excels in spa services and the food and beverage industry. One of the highlights under ONYX Hospitality Group’s management is Nila, an Indian restaurant inspired by India’s Coastal culinary heritage. It is a culinary heritage deeply rooted in the cultural richness passed down from ancient artifact merchants, spice traders, and herbalists of Goa and the Malabar Coast of India.

Every aspect of Nila is a tribute to the land it represents—from its name, derived from Malayalam, meaning “blue like the sea,” to its décor, which evokes the warmth of a Goan home influenced by Portuguese heritage. The food and beverage menu stays true to Indian authenticity, featuring dishes crafted with Kerala’s fragrant coconut. A standout is the spicy seafood curry from Goa—a dish that blends contemporary culinary techniques with the adventurous spirit of ancient traders, delivering a unique identity and a delightful experience in every bite.

To celebrate its first anniversary, Nila invites guests to explore culinary journey, indulging in the rich flavors of Indian coastal cuisine with a thoughtfully curated menu. The experience begins with three exquisite appetizers, including Phal Dhokla, a beloved dish from India’s west coast, particularly Gujarat. Made from soft, fluffy lentil flour, this delicacy is served with tropical fruits, sweet yogurt, and red chili jam, offering a harmonious balance of sweet, sour, and spicy in every bite.

Next on the appetizer selection is Wada Bao, Mumbai’s most sought-after street food. This crispy, fried, spicy mashed potato is wrapped in soft steamed dough, offering a comforting bite, and can be an ideal belly filler. Another highlight is the Khara Puff, a South Indian take on the classic puff pastry. Made with soft, fine dough and filled with a spiced vegetable mixture, it is perfectly complemented by a tangy cranberry chutney, delivering a well-balanced fusion of flavors and spices in every bite.

Another standout appetizer is Peri-Peri Jheenga, a Goan-style prawn marinated in fiery peri-peri chili peppers. Grilled over an open flame to perfection, it is served with smoked tomatoes and sweet chili chutney, creating an intense, tangy flavor. The peri-peri chili peppers, introduced to India by the Portuguese from Africa, give this dish a unique fusion of Goan and Portuguese influences.

Next comes Kozhi Chuttathu, a traditional Kerala dish featuring chicken drumsticks marinated in yogurt, red chili, and Malabar spices. The chicken is then grilled and smoked to perfection, and served with pickled beetroot, shallots, and a refreshing mint sauce, offering a smoky, spicy, and aromatic flavor.

This classic Bengali sea bass curry is infused with bold, spicy flavors and is served with a velvety pumpkin puree seasoned in the aromatic panchphoran (a blend of five spices). The dish provides a comforting and aromatic experience, making each bite a satisfying journey.

Next, enjoy the Chicken Ghee Roast, a signature main course from Bangalore, Karnataka. Tender chicken is cooked in ghee and a flavorful red chili sauce, creating a rich, spicy, and aromatic taste. Served with Kal Dosa, a crispy flatbread, this dish highlights the region’s love for ghee-roasted delicacies, offering a rich, spicy, and aromatic coastal flavor.

Mutton lovers will be in for a treat with Mutton Perattu, a rich Kerala-style mutton curry served with soft, flaky parotta. Packed with a generous amount of spices, this dish delivers a deep, aromatic flavor that is both hearty and impressive.

Filter Kapi Misu is a delightful fusion dessert that combines the bold, outstandingly rich flavors of Coorg coffee with the creamy smoothness of Tiramisu. This classic South Indian twist on the traditional dessert offers a perfect ending to a delicious meal.

For vegetarians, Nila has thoughtfully adapted its menu with plant-based ingredients such as beans, tofu, and mushrooms. Highlights include Wild Mushroom Ularthiyayhu, where wild mushrooms are stir-fried with Malabar spices, creating an aromatic and rich dish. The Tofu Jhol is a traditional Bengali-style spicy curry paired with panchphoran-tempered pumpkin mash. Another standout is Soy Perattu, a soy protein curry infused with aromatic spices, served with soft parotta.
