BANGKOK — Huai Khwang police discovered 26 Chinese partygoers and methamphetamine during a raid on an illegal entertainment venue in Din Daeng district early Tuesday.

In the early hours of November 5, officers from Huai Khwang Police Station, Bangkok, and the Children and Women’s Welfare Division raided a 5-story commercial building at 7 Soi Pracharatbamphen 4, Din Daeng district, Bangkok, following reports of an illegal entertainment venue.

Officers found that the 1st and 2nd floors were still under construction and renovation. On the 3rd floor, they discovered two furnished rooms equipped with lighting and sound systems. They found 26 Chinese patrons total – Room 1 had 7 people (3 men, 4 women) and Room 2 had 19 people (13 men, 6 women). Both rooms were being used for drinking and dining.

During the search, drug paraphernalia was found in Room 1, and outside Room 2, officers discovered a handbag containing crystal-like substances resembling ice (methamphetamine) in 4 zip-lock bags.

Officers arrested Sakorn, age 25, from Chai Prakan district, Chiang Mai, who identified himself as the building’s manager and caretaker. He stated that the building was being renovated into a karaoke establishment, but due to customer demand, he illegally opened for business, charging 20,000 baht per room.

When officers requested to see entertainment venue licenses, they found the establishment had no permits for operating an entertainment venue or selling alcohol. The venue was also selling alcohol outside legal hours.

Sakorn was charged with operating an entertainment venue without a license, allowing or neglecting drug-related offenses on the premises, and selling alcohol outside permitted hours.

The arrest team transferred the suspect and evidence to Huai Khwang Police Station for legal proceedings. The patrons and staff were taken to Police General Hospital for drug testing.

Here’s What to Watch as Election Day Approaches in the U.S.

Election Day

WASHINGTON (AP) — Election Day is nearly upon us. In a matter of hours, the final votes in the 2024 presidential election will be cast.

In a deeply divided nation, the election is a true toss-up between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.

We know there are seven battleground states that will decide the outcome, barring a major surprise. But major questions persist about the timing of the results, the makeup of the electorate, the influx of misinformation — even the possibility of political violence. At the same time, both sides are prepared for a protracted legal battle that could complicate things further.

Here’s what to watch on the eve of Election Day 2024:

History will be made either way

Given all the twists and turns in recent months, it’s easy to overlook the historical significance of this election.

Harris would become the first female president in the United States’ 248-year history. She would also be the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to hold the office. Harris and her campaign have largely played down gender and race fearing that they might alienate some supporters. But the significance of a Harris win would not be lost on historians.

A Trump victory would represent a different kind of historical accomplishment. He would become the first person convicted of a felony elected to the U.S. presidency, having been convicted of 34 felony counts in a New York hush-money case little more than five months ago.

Trump, who is still facing felony charges in at least two separate criminal cases, argued that he is the victim of a politicized justice system. And tens of millions of voters apparently believe him — or they’re willing to overlook his extraordinary legal baggage.

How long will it take to know the winner?

Election Day in the United States is now often considered election week as each state follows its own rules and practices for counting ballots — not to mention the legal challenges — that can delay the results. But the truth is, nobody knows how long it will take for the winner to be announced this time.

In 2020, The Associated Press declared President Joe Biden the winner on Saturday afternoon — four days after polls closed. But even then, The AP called North Carolina for Trump 10 days after Election Day and Georgia for Biden 16 days later after hand recounts.

Four years earlier, the 2016 election was decided just hours after most polls closed. The AP declared Trump the winner on election night at 2:29 a.m. (it was technically Wednesday morning on the East Coast).

This time, both campaigns believe the race is extremely close across the seven swing states that are expected to decide the election, barring a major surprise: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The size of the map and the tightness of the race make it hard to predict when a winner could be declared.

Where can I find early clues about how the contest might unfold?

Look to two East Coast battleground states, North Carolina and Georgia, where the results could come in relatively quickly. That doesn’t mean we’ll get the final results in those states quickly if the returns are close, but they are the first swing states that might offer a sense of what kind of night we’re in for.

To go deeper, look to urban and suburban areas in the industrial North and Southeast, where Democrats have made gains since 2020.

In North Carolina, Harris’ margins in Wake and Mecklenburg Counties, home to the state capital of Raleigh and the state’s largest city, Charlotte, respectively, will reveal how much Trump will need to squeeze out of the less-populated rural areas he has dominated.

In Pennsylvania, Harris needs heavy turnout in deep blue Philadelphia, but she’s also looking to boost the Democrats’ advantage in the arc of suburban counties to the north and west of the city. She has campaigned aggressively in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties, where Biden improved on Clinton’s 2016 winning margins. The Philadelphia metro area, including the four collar counties, accounts for 43 percent of Pennsylvania’s vote.

Elsewhere in the Blue Wall, Trump needs to blunt Democratic growth in Michigan’s key suburban counties outside of Detroit, especially Oakland County. He faces the same challenge in Wisconsin’s Waukesha County outside of Milwaukee.

Where are the candidates?

Trump will likely spend the very early hours of Election Day in Michigan, where he is scheduled to hold a final late-night rally in Grand Rapids as has become his tradition.

The Republican candidate plans to spend the rest of the day in Florida, where he is expected to vote in person — despite previously saying he would vote early. He’s scheduled to hold a campaign watch party in Palm Beach Tuesday night.

Harris plans to attend an Election Night party at Howard University in Washington, a historically Black university where she graduated with a degree in economics and political science in 1986 and was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Aside from Howard, she has no public schedule announced for Election Day.

Harris said Sunday that she had “just filled out” her mail-in ballot and it was “on its way to California.”

Who’s left to show up on Election Day?

On the eve of Election Day, it’s unclear which voters will show up to cast ballots on Tuesday.

More than 77 million people participated in early voting — either in person or through the mail. So many people already cast ballots that some officials say the polls in states like Georgia might be a “ghost town” on Election Day.

One major reason for the surge is that that Trump has generally encouraged his supporters to vote early this time, a reversal from 2020 when he called on Republicans to vote only in-person on Election Day. The early vote numbers confirm that millions of Republicans have heeded Trump’s call in recent weeks.

The key question, however, is whether the surge of Republicans who voted early this time will ultimately cannibalize the number of Republicans who show up on Tuesday.

AP24310176023453

There are also shifts on the Democratic side. Four years ago, as the pandemic lingered, Democrats overwhelmingly cast their ballots early. But this time around, without the public health risk, it’s likely that more Democrats will show up in person on Election Day.

That balance on both sides is critical as we try to understand the early returns. And it’s on the campaigns to know which voters they still need to turn out on Tuesday. On that front, Democrats may have an advantage.

Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee have outsourced much of their get-out-the-vote operation operation to outside groups, including one funded largely by billionaire Trump ally Elon Musk that’s facing new questions about its practices. Harris’ campaign, by contrast, is running a more traditional operation that features more than 2,500 paid staffers and 357 offices in battleground states alone.

Could there be unrest?

Trump has been aggressively promoting baseless claims in recent days questioning the integrity of the election. He falsely insists that he can lose only if Democrats cheat, even as polls show that show the race is a true toss-up.

Trump could again claim victory on election night regardless of the results, just as he did in 2020.

Such rhetoric can have serious consequences as the nation saw when Trump loyalists stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 in one of the darkest days in modern American history. And unfortunately, there is still a potential of further violence this election season.

AP24309802517084

The Republican National Committee will have thousands of “election integrity” poll monitors in place on Tuesday searching for any signs of fraud, which critics fear could lead to harassment of voters or election workers. In some key voting places, officials have requested the presence of sheriff deputies in addition to bulletproof glass and panic buttons that connect poll managers to a local 911 dispatcher.

At the same time, Trump allies note that he has faced two assassination attempts in recent months that raise the possibility of further threats against him. And police in Washington and other cities are preparing for the possibility of serious Election Day unrest.

As always, it’s worth noting that a broad coalition of top government and industry officials, many of them Republicans, found that the 2020 election was the “most secure” in American history.”

Thailand Leads Southeast Asia in Road Fatalities, UN Special Envoy Warns

The seminar on road safety in Southeast Asia co-organized by the Embassy of France and UN ESCAP on November 4, 2024.

BANGKOK — Southeast Asia is the second most-affected regions in the world when it comes to road accidents, after Africa, and Thailand “tragically leads in this statistics” said UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt on Monday, November 4, in Bangkok.

Speaking at a seminar on road safety in Southeast Asia, co-organized by the Embassy of France and UN ESCAP, Todt said 40 percent of road accidents in Southeast Asia involved motorcycles and riders not wearing safety helmet.

Todt, who flew in from Geneva, said helmets suitable for hot and humid weather are now available and costs 20 US dollars.

The UN’s target is to reduce the 1.2 million annual global deaths on the roads by 50 percent by 2030. “The target is ambitious but achievable,” he told the seminar at the Alliance Francaise in Bangkok. To achieve the goal, a comprehensive system is needed, said Todt, who cited stricter speed limits, expanded public transport, public education, use of safety helmets and more.

Jean Todt3
Jean Todt, UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety

French Ambassador to Thailand Jean-Claude Poimboeuf said during the opening remark that more than 400 French nationals in Thailand have been caught in road accidents. “Fortunately not all were fatal,” Poimboeuf said.

The French Ambassador then recalled a meeting with a male French expat in Thailand who told him he “feels free living in Thailand” because he could ride a motorcycle to buy goods at a market without having to wear a helmet. It was at that point that the Ambassador said he “scolded” the man and furbished the expat with road accident statistics. “I hope he got the message.”

Plan to Lower Speed Limits in Bangkok

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said at the seminar that he is seeking to reduce speed limits for drivers in Bangkok from 80 to 60 kilometres per hour in an attempt to reduce road accidents and fatalities.

The governor stressed that the number of fatalities is decreasing: the period between January and September 2023 saw 884 people killed on the roads in Bangkok, while in the same period this year, 2024, the number was reduced to 596.

Chadchart said more CCTV cameras have been installed and in October alone, 43,000 instances of traffic violations captured on camera. There are 100 spots identified as dangerous for motorists.

He added that 82 percent of road accidents involved motorcycles and 50 percent from speeding.

On the other hand, 34 percent of the accidents were attributed to insufficient lighting conditions. The governor said City Hall has changed 100,000 street lights to LED lights to ensure better visibility, with the expectation of having nearly 200,000 done before his term ends.

Paralympic Star Shares Road Crash Story

Ms Saisunee Jana, 50, may be a Paralympic icon for Thais and foreigners, particularly the physically handicapped people, but she said on Monday she wasn’t born half paralysed but that was due to a reckless driver who hit her motorbike when she was 17. The incident subsequently led her to an attempted suicide while at the hospital, which failed.

Jean Todt12
Ms Saisunee Jana

Saisunee said the driver was never apprehended and her life changed from being a poor factory worker to an even poorer lottery seller and artificial flowers maker.  She managed to eventually muster enough strength to carry on, eventually entering competitive sports and became the first Thai Paralympic gold medallist in wheelchair fencing and has since won 3 gold medals.

“The [speeding driver] has no conscience in driving… It took me a very long time before I could come to term with it. What’s most important is to awaken the conscience of people,” she told the audience at the Alliance Francaise.

Thai PM Confirms Koh Kood Not Part of MOU 44 Despite Rivals’ Claims

Koh Kood
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra speaks to media after meeting coalition leaders about Thailand-Cambodia MOU 44 on November 4, 2024. She maintains the agreement does not involve Koh Kood. (Khaosod Photo/Yokin Charoenying)

BANGKOK — Political conflicts among Thai rivals have led to the Koh Kood issue being raised to attack the government and the Pheu Thai Party leadership again, particularly regarding the 2001 MOU (known as MOU 44) during Thaksin Shinawatra’s government, with claims that Thailand might lose Koh Kood in Trat province to Cambodia.

On November 4, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with coalition party leaders to discuss details before holding a press conference emphasizing that MOU 44 has nothing to do with Koh Kood, and the government would never agree to lose any territory.

Regarding calls for Thailand to cancel MOU 44, she explained that this cannot be done unilaterally and requires agreement from both countries – unilateral cancellation could result in legal action.

“Today, the government wants to confirm that Koh Kood belongs to Thailand, has been for a long time, and Cambodia acknowledges this as well, according to the French treaty. We’ve never had any issues with Cambodia regarding Koh Kood, there’s never been any doubt. The misunderstanding seems to exist only within Thailand,” she stated.

kohkood navy
Admiral Jirapon Wongwit, Commander of the Royal Thai Navy, along with naval officers, arrived by helicopter at the Koh Kood Operations Base near Ban Laem Thian in southern Koh Kood to visit personnel in the border area on November 2, 2024.

The Palang Pracharath Party, after being excluded from the coalition, now opposes MOU 44 (signed June 4, 2001, after 44 days of negotiations), echoing anti-Thaksin groups who claim the longstanding ties between the Shinawatra and Hun families could compromise national interests.

The Palang Pracharath Party also accused Thaksin’s government of failing to protect Thailand’s international legal rights, claiming it was the first to accept Cambodia’s line overlapping Thai territory, creating a massive overlapping area of 26,000 square kilometers, which previously had no legal recognition.

MOU44: Agreement to Negotiate

PM Paetongtarn clarified that this is a misunderstanding – the Thai government hasn’t accepted any boundary lines. The MOU has nothing to do with Koh Kood; it merely acknowledges that Thailand and Cambodia have different views and need to work together to resolve the issue. This stems from Cambodia drawing their boundary in 1972, followed by Thailand drawing theirs in 1973. The MOU is essentially an agreement to negotiate.

Currently, Cambodia has their committee in place, while Thailand needs to establish a new committee following the government change. Looking back to Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government, such a committee also existed. The new committee is being formed and will involve various ministries including Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Energy working together.

When asked about whether MOU 44 was cancelled during Abhisit Vejjajiva’s government (2008-2011), Paetongtarn stated this wasn’t true, as MOUs cannot be cancelled unilaterally without bilateral agreement and parliamentary approval. This wasn’t brought to parliament in 2009, and General Prayut confirmed this in 2014.

“If we cancel unilaterally, Cambodia will definitely sue us, which serves no purpose. I think if everyone understands the principles, this shouldn’t escalate. These are facts that must be followed this way. There are no behind-the-scenes talks because this is already within an established legal framework,” the Prime Minister concluded.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Foreign Ministry briefed media on plans to revive negotiations with Cambodia over disputed waters in the Gulf of Thailand. It stated that the Overlapping Claims Area (OCA), spanning 26,000 square kilometers of continental shelf, has been largely untouched since 2002 when talks between both nations stalled. A 2001 agreement requires both countries to handle maritime boundaries and joint development together.

Director-General Suphanvasa Chotikajan Tang of the Treaties and Legal Affairs Department said Thailand is now proposing new members for the Joint Technical Committee to the Cabinet, signaling fresh momentum in the negotiations.

Any resolution must meet three requirements: public acceptance in both countries, parliamentary approval, and compliance with international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Pheu Thai VS Palang Pracharath

The conflict between the Pheu Thai Party and Palang Pracharath Party became evident since the first government formation on August 22, 2023, when General Prawit Wongsuwon, leader of Palang Pracharath Party, did not vote to approve Srettha Thavisin as Prime Minister during the parliamentary session, along with senators who supported General Prawit.

Later, members of Palang Pracharath Party filed a petition that led to the Constitutional Court’s decision to remove Srettha from the Prime Minister position due to controversial ministerial appointments. When it came time to approve Paetongtarn as the new Prime Minister on August 5, 2024, General Prawit again did not attend the meeting and was displeased with reporters who questioned him about this.

Meanwhile, Thammanat Prompao’s political group withdrew from Palang Pracharath Party to cooperate with Pheu Thai Party, leading to the Pheu Thai-led government excluding Palang Pracharath from the coalition.

In September, an audio clip was released on a television news program featuring a conversation with someone who claimed to have worked with a Prime Minister for a long time and wanted a chance from the public to become “number one.”

Additionally, in the iCon Group fraud case, there was an audio clip of a person identified as “S” soliciting benefits on behalf of an “deity,” which led to Samart Jenchaijitwanich’s resignation from Palang Pracharath Party on October 25. Subsequently, the new spokesperson for Palang Pracharath Party made accusations that it was actually Pheu Thai Party who was involved with iCon Group personnel. Pheu Thai Party denied these allegations and announced they might take legal action against those making false accusations.

Subsequently, issues arose concerning Koh Kood island and MOU44. Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala, Academic Chairman of the Palang Pracharath Party, stated in a press conference on October 30 that General Prawit had told him that during his time as Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Thai Technical Committee in negotiations with Cambodia, Cambodia mentioned Koh Kood in every meeting.

“As a result, General Prawit ordered the postponement of negotiations, which led to unsuccessful outcomes. However, it was clear that Koh Kood was definitely on Cambodia’s agenda,” said Thirachai.

Volcanic Eruption Burns Houses in Indonesia, Killing at Least 10 People

MAUMERE, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency said Monday that at least 10 people have died as a series of volcanic eruptions widens on the remote island of Flores.

The eruption at Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki around midnight spewed thick brownish ash as high as 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) into the air and hot ashes hit several villages, burning down houses including a convent of Catholic nuns, said Firman Yosef, an official at the Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki monitoring post.

He said volcanic material was thrown up to 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from its crater, blanketing nearby villages and towns with tons of volcanic debris and forcing residents to flee.

Rescuers were still searching for more bodies buried under collapsed houses, said Abdul Muhari, the National Disaster Management Agency’s spokesperson. Muhari said all the bodies, including a child, were found with a 4-kilometer (2.4 mile) radius of the crater.

He said at least 10,000 people have been affected by the eruption in six villages of Wulanggitang District, and four villages in Ile Bura district. Some have fled to relatives’ houses while the local government is readying schools to use as temporary shelters.

The country’s volcano monitoring agency increased the volcano’s alert status to the highest level and more than doubled the exclusion zone to a 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) radius after midnight on Monday as eruptions became more frequent.

A nun in Hokeng village died and another was missing, said Agusta Palma, the head of the Saint Gabriel Foundation that oversees convents on the majority-Catholic island.

“Our nuns ran out in panic under a rain of volcanic ash in the darkness,” Palma said.

Photos and videos circulated on social media showed tons of volcanic debris covering houses up to their rooftops in villages like Hokeng, where hot volcanic material set fire to houses.

Lewotobi Laki-laki is one of a pair of stratovolcanoes in the East Flores district of East Nusa Tenggara province known locally as the husband — “Laki-laki” means man — and wife mountains. Its mate is Lewotobi Perempuan, or woman.

About 6,500 people were evacuated in January after Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki began erupting, spewing thick clouds and forcing the government to close the island’s Frans Seda Airport. No casualties or major damage were reported, but the airport has remained closed since then due to seismic activity.

In a video conference on Monday, Muhammad Wafid, the head of Geology Agency at the Energy and Mineral Resources ministry said there was a different character between January’s eruption and Monday’s eruption due to a blockage of magma in the crater, which reduced detectible seismic activity while building up pressure.

“The eruptions that occurred since Friday were due to the accumulation of hidden energy,” Wafid said.

It’s Indonesia’s second volcanic eruption in as many weeks. West Sumatra province’s Mount Marapi, one of the country’s most active volcanos, erupted on Oct. 27, spewing thick columns of ash at least three times and blanketing nearby villages with debris, but no casualties were reported.

Lewotobi Laki-laki is one of the 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, an archipelago of 280 million people. The country is prone to earthquakes, landslides and volcanic activity because it sits along the “Ring of Fire,” a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines around the Pacific Ocean.

Thai Rice Exports Surge 22% in First 9 Months Amid Growing Competition

BANGKOK — Thailand exported 7,448,941 tons of rice worth 172.019 billion baht in the first nine months of 2024 (January-September), an increase of 22 percent in volume and 45.8 percent in value compared to the same period in 2023, according to Pol. Lt. Col. Charoen Laothamatas, President of the Rice Exporters Association of Thailand.

He stated that white rice led exports with 4,702,455 tons (up 42 percent), followed by jasmine rice with 1,233,108 tons (up 9 percent), parboiled rice with 814,791 tons (down 28.2 percent), Thai fragrant rice with 487,587 tons (up 42.5 percent) and glutinous rice with 211,000 tons (up 15.7 percent).

The top five importers of Thai rice were Indonesia (1,092,128 tons, up 20.7 percent), Iraq (907,715 tons, up 25.1 percent), the United States (609,430 tons, up 19.5 percent), South Africa (580,288 tons, down 20.6 percent) and the Philippines (399,493 tons, up 246.7 percent).

India remained the world’s largest rice exporter in the first nine months, followed by Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and the United States.

In September 2024, Thailand exported 878,711 tons of rice worth 19.463 billion baht, down 0.8 percent in volume and 3.5 percent in value from August 2024, due to a decline in exports of parboiled and broken rice, while exports of white rice and jasmine rice remained strong.

For October, The country is expected to export no less than 700,000 tons, driven by demand from African countries preparing for Christmas and New Year and pending contracts from the previous month.

The Rice Exporters Association of Thailand foresees intense competition in the market as India lifts its export restrictions, which should allow Indian exporters to expand their exports of white and parboiled rice, potentially impacting Thailand’s market share in these categories.

At the end of October 2024, Thai rice prices showed signs of decline amid increased price competition. Thai 5 percent white rice was at 507 US dollars per ton, compared to 524-528 US dollars for Vietnam, 444-448 US dollars for India and 461-465 US dollars for Pakistan. Thai parboiled rice cost 522 US dollars per ton, while Indian and Pakistani parboiled rice cost 439-443 US dollars and 493-497 US dollars respectively.

12-Year Murder Case Reveals Thailand’s Missing Persons Flaws

SA KAEO — The Supreme Court’s final verdict in a 12-year-old murder case has not only brought justice to a slain 19-year-old woman but also revealed serious gaps in Thailand’s missing persons system and ongoing concerns about violence against women.

The prosecution and punishment of perpetrators of violence against women is crucial in combating the ongoing violence in society, both in major cases and everyday incidents.

On October 31, at Sa Kaeo Provincial Supreme Court in Tha Kasem subdistrict, Mueang district, Sa Kaeo province, the court read its verdict in the case of Ms. Mayuree Yodpanao, or “Liu,” a 19-year-old factory worker who disappeared and was later found murdered by a school director who was 47 years old at the time.

Liu disappeared on May 5, 2012, after going to work at Industrial Estate 304 in Sri Mahaphot district, Prachinburi province. She had parked her motorcycle at a retail store near the industrial estate. Someone later sent an SMS to her family saying she had gone to work abroad and not to worry.

However, after many years passed without any contact from Liu, in 2019, her family saw news about the Mirror Foundation, which works on missing persons cases, and sought their help. The foundation’s team investigated unidentified bodies from that period, coordinating with hospitals in Chonburi, Chachoengsao, Prachinburi, and Sa Kaeo provinces. They found three suspicious unidentified female bodies, all murder victims whose bodies had been hidden.

DNA Finally Solved the Case

When Sureewan Yodpanao, Liu’s mother, participated in DNA testing, results from late 2013 confirmed that an unidentified female body reported to police on May 13, 2012, found in a sugarcane field in Moo 13, Tha Kwian Sub-district, Watthana Nakhon District, Sa Kaeo Province, was Liu’s. After DNA collection, the body had been kept at a private cemetery in Chonburi Province.

The family then filed a request to reopen the case on January 28, 2021. The investigation led to a school director in Don Pru subdistrict, Si Prachant district, Suphan Buri province, who had been romantically involved with Liu and was previously the director of her school. Family members had learned from Liu’s close friends and coworkers that she had been in a relationship with an older man and had previously tried to end the relationship.

The Watthana Nakhon Police investigation team and Sa Kaeo provincial police arrested Mr. Jumpon Suphaphong, or “Director Tu,” in Suphan Buri on February 18, 2021. Though he denied the charges, investigators gathered evidence, particularly bullet casings found in a well behind his house in Suphan Buri that matched the murder weapon. He was prosecuted at Sa Kaeo Provincial Court for intentional murder.

The lower court considered the weapon evidence, DNA results, and testimony from the victim’s friends conclusive enough to find the defendant guilty. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay compensation of 1,788,000 baht plus 7.5% annual interest from May 13, 2012.

On October 31, 2023, the Appeals Court upheld the life sentence. On October 31, 2024, the Sa Kaeo Supreme Court spent about 20 minutes reading its verdict, which upheld both lower court decisions.

Somsak Yodpayao, Liu’s 65-year-old father, came to hear the Supreme Court’s verdict at Sa Kaeo Provincial Court with his son. Sureewan, now 59, was ill and receiving hospital treatment, so she couldn’t attend. He expressed great joy that the court had provided justice for his family and daughter. He plans to consult with the Mirror Foundation about pursuing the court-ordered compensation, feeling that justice has been served.

“When we get home, I will light incense and tell Liu that I’m happy the court has given her justice. As for the person who did this to Liu, let him live his life that way. Whoever creates karma must receive karma,” he said with tears in his eyes.

Better Missing Persons Data System Needed

Ekkalak Lumchumkae, head of the Missing Persons Information Center at the Mirror Foundation, who attended the Supreme Court’s verdict reading, said that after learning about the case from Liu’s parents, they investigated and found no record of Liu leaving the country. Her ID card had expired without renewal, leading them to suspect foul play. Their investigation revealed relationship issues at the time of her disappearance.

After searching through unidentified bodies across nearly 5 provinces and almost 10 hospitals, they found three female bodies from the same timeframe as the disappearance. DNA samples from the mother were compared, leading to a match with one body found in Tha Kwian subdistrict, Watthana Nakhon district, Suphan Buri province. The body showed evidence of gun-related homicide.

Ekkalak added that upon discovering this information, they coordinated with Watthana Nakhon Police Station and central investigation police. Police Colonel Sathit Mitrak, then-superintendent of Watthana Nakhon Police Station, conducted a thorough investigation that led to the perpetrator’s arrest, bringing some justice to the missing person’s family after 12 full years.

“Liu’s family has received partial justice – a life lost cannot be exchanged for the perpetrator’s punishment, as the loss is immense. However, at least some justice has been restored, and the perpetrator will serve his sentence according to law. If Liu’s spirit knows, she would be at peace that her parents received justice,” said the head of the Missing Persons Information Center.

Ekkalak further noted that Liu’s murder case highlights Thailand’s lack of systematic management of unidentified bodies’ data. The foundation had to manually search through autopsy records at various hospital morgues in the area, where information was recorded by hand in notebooks, before finally discovering that the missing person had been murdered and found in the middle of a forest.

However, the family couldn’t retrieve the body as the cemetery had already been cleared. This emphasizes the importance of proper missing persons data management as crucial evidence for bringing justice to many families.

According to the Mirror Foundation’s statistics, someone goes missing every 4 hours. Currently, there are 18,887 recorded missing persons cases, with 16,315 (86%) found, and 2,232 still under investigation.

The Central Institute of Forensic Science revealed that the number of missing persons reports, unidentified persons, and unidentified bodies has been steadily increasing from October 2021 to February 2024. The cumulative figures show 201 missing persons reports, 273 unidentified persons, and 380 unidentified bodies, with an upward trend expected to continue.

Princess Sirivannavari Presides Over 2024 National Thai Textile Competition

Princess Sirivannavari

BANGKOK — Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana graciously presided over the final judging of the 2024 “Sirivajiraporn Royal Pattern Fabric” and handicrafts competition, held at Suralai Hall, 7th floor, ICONSIAM, Bangkok.

This prestigious event is part of Her Royal Highness’s visionary initiative, “Thai Fabrics: Wear it with Pride,” which aims to elevate the quality and global recognition of Thai textiles and crafts. Organized by the Ministry of Interior through the Community Development Department, the competition has become an annual event of great significance.

It marks its fourth consecutive year in promoting Thai fabric heritage and celebrating the dedication of artisans committed to preserving and innovating within this cultural legacy.

This year, submissions were welcomed from textile producers, OTOP fabric and clothing entrepreneurs, as well as artisans from across Thailand’s four regions. Held from June 1 to August 15, 2024, the competition attracted a total of 8,651 entries.

Of these, 78 exceptional works progressed to the national finals, comprising 72 pieces of fabric across 14 categories—including mixed technique, ethnic group fabrics, batik, embroidery, ikat, and large and small brocade fabrics—and six handicraft pieces.

A distinguished panel, including senior officials from the Ministry of Interior, textile experts, natural dye specialists, and prominent designers, conducted evaluations based on various criteria such as clarity of the royal pattern, use of natural colors and materials, fabric width, craftsmanship, weaving uniformity, creativity, and adaptability.

The “Sirivajiraporn” pattern was presented by Her Royal Highness on February 22, 2024, during her visit to Ban Khum Phun in Warin Chamrap District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. Inspired by textile designs across Thailand,

Her Royal Highness created the “Sirivajiraporn” pattern in honor of His Majesty the King’s auspicious 6th-cycle birthday on July 28, 2024. This exquisite pattern comprises four distinctive designs:

  • “Wachiraphak,” symbolizing the initial “W” in His Majesty’s name
  • “Princess Sirivannavari’s Monogram 2024,” which builds on previous royal monogram patterns
  • “Heart,” embodying the love and care extended by the royal family to the people
  • “Royal Love for the People,” symbolizing the profound connection between the monarchy and the Thai people.

The royal pattern was designed for adaptability across four textile types—Kab Bua fabric, brocade, ikat, and batik—encouraging local craftsmanship to blend with traditional designs and support sustainable livelihoods creatively.

The awards for the 2024 competition are categorized into two main distinctions. The first is the Special Award category, featuring the highly coveted Best of the Best award for the overall top prize-winning piece.

The second category encompasses Royal Medals: The Gold Medal for the highest-ranking piece, the Silver Medal for the first runner-up, the Bronze Medal for the second runner-up, and honorable mentions with certificates.

This year’s Best of the Best honor was awarded in the large brocade category for the “Sirivajiraporn Royal Court Fabric” from the Arts of the Kingdom Museum, Queen Sirikit Institute.

Her Royal Highness is scheduled to personally present the awards to the winners in November, underscoring the royal family’s enduring commitment to preserving and advancing Thailand’s textile heritage on a global stage.
