Suntory Mizuiku Program 2024 Announces Winners; Two Schools to Visit Japan

Suntory Beverage & Food (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Co., Ltd. have successfully raised awareness of water and environmental conservation among Thai youth through the “Mizuiku Water Model School” contest that promotes the creation and implementation of water conservation projects in schools and surrounding communities. Sponsored by the “One Suntory Mizuiku Program 2024”, the two winning schools from Chonburi and Rayong provinces will participate in an educational trip to Japan between October 27 to November 1, 2024, to learn about the background of the “Mizuiku” program.

Representing “One Suntory”, Piengchit Sriprasart, SVP People & Culture and Corporate Affairs, Thailand & Indochina, Suntory Beverage & Food (Thailand), stated that “Water resource is crucial to Suntory Group’s business operations. Therefore, we prioritize the preservation of water and the environment by establishing water-related sustainability goals, such as raising youth awareness of water conservation, reducing water use in the production, and working with suppliers in the supply chain to improve water use efficiency for their production. We also recognize challenges of water resource management in Thailand. Consequently, we focus on carrying out initiatives to raise youth’s awareness and foster positive behaviors to protect water and the environment, supporting them to be change agents responsible for sustainably conserving the environment and water resources. To address these goals, we held the ‘Mizuiku Water Model School’ contest as part of the ‘One Suntory Mizuiku Program 2024’, supporting teacher and student leaders who joined the June ‘Mizuiku Water Hero Camp’ to implement water conservation projects within their schools. This created positive impact to over 8,000 students and teachers from 30 schools in Chonburi and Rayong as they gained knowledge about water and environmental conservation, fostering long-lasting changes.”

image3 362

“Under the ‘Mizuiku Water Model School’ contest, the two companies provided financial support of 10,000 baht to each of the 30 schools, enabling them to carry out water conservation projects covering four aspects, including policy, stakeholder participation, infrastructure, and community engagement, while forming the ‘Mizuiku Club’ to drive the projects sustainably. To assess the efficiency of project implementation of these schools, the committee; consisting of representatives from both companies, environmental experts, and representatives from the Department of Water Resources, the Pollution Control Department, and the Department of Climate Change and Environment under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; participated in an online project presentation and an onsite visit to select one winning school from each province to join an educational trip to learn about the history of the ‘Mizuiku’ program in Japan.”

image2 397

“The implementation of the “One Suntory Mizuiku Program 2024” aligns with our corporate value of “Growing for Good”, which has continuously been upheld by both companies. It strengthens employee engagement in social and environmental development activities as the business continues to grow.”

A committee member and lecturer at the Department of Water Resources Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sitang Pilailar stated that, “During the online presentation, we saw the students’ enthusiasm in sharing about their projects. As we visited the schools, we were even more impressed with their capacity to apply the knowledge gained from the ‘Mizuiku Water Hero Camp’ to create solutions. This is excellent because water is a significant resource for all lives, and we will not exist without water. We hope that the students participating in this activity will further share the knowledge within their families and communities.”

image4 311

As for the winner selection criteria, scores from three parts will be combined to screen for the school with the highest score from each province: 1. Test results from the camp activities; 2. Project presentation via online platform; and 3. Project evaluation from the onsite visit. The following schools have been chosen to represent the provinces of Rayong and Chonburi:

Petch Pittayakom School, Chonburi Province: The main objective of the school is to implement a holistic project, incorporating all aspects of “Environmental Education” knowledge with learning experiences that take place both within and outside classrooms. The school also founded the “Mizuiku Water and Environment Conservation Unit” to investigate environmental and water-related issues in the community and school so that the students can offer relevant practical solutions. Their innovative creations are “Sprinklers to Save the World, Reduce Dust, Reduce Heat, and Water Vegetables” and “DIY Grease Trap.” They also participated in activities to treat wastewater before discharging it into public water sources, address environmental and pollution issues within the community, promote proper waste separation, which have been expanded to many surrounding communities. These activities focused on raising awareness among students and their families, partnering with other schools, offering learning materials to encourage waste separation, educating the public about marine waste and microplastics, taking part in the “Release Crabs Back to the Sea” initiative to boost the population of aquatic animals, planting mangroves, and volunteering in the “Upstream-Midstream” campaign to reduce waste in the canal that connects Ban Suan Municipality and Chonburi Municipality, etc.

Chumchon Borisat Namtan Tawanaok School, Rayong Province: The school introduces a holistic learning management project to develop themselves into a middle-leveled Eco School, following the concept of “an environmental citizen school with holistic health management”. This is achieved through the comprehensive development of infrastructure, including a drinking water system, a wastewater treatment system for the canteen, which used to be the school’s main challenge, and water quality inspection before releasing into natural water sources. Within the school, all staff members engaged in water conservation and successfully spread the word to surrounding communities and families. Furthermore, the school incorporated curriculum and extracurricular activities related to water and environmental conservation, including environmental studies, producing fertilizer from food waste, and measuring pH and oxygen levels in water for quality testing, the knowledge gained from attending the “Mizuku Water Hero Camp.”

Car Bomb in Tak Bai Possibly Linked to 20-Year-Old Case of 78 Deaths

Tak Bai
The wreckage of the car bomb and damage from the explosion at the Tak Bai district chief's residence in Village No. 3, Je-he Subdistrict, Tak Bai District, Narathiwat Province on September 30, 2024.

BANGKOK — The car bomb explosion in Tak Bai District, Narathiwat Province, on the evening of September 29, is being viewed as connected to the mass death of 78 Muslim protesters 20 years ago, for which the statute of limitations will expire on October 26 this year.

On September 30, the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward Command reported the investigation results of the car bombing: The group of perpetrators consisted of about 4-5 people, dressed similarly to officials with their faces covered. They used guns to threaten and take a gray MG5 car belonging to Ms. Mariam, with Bangkok license plate. They then installed an improvised explosive device in the vehicle.

The perpetrators parked the car in front of the Tak Bai district chief’s residence in Village No. 3, Je-he Subdistrict, Tak Bai District. The explosion occurred at 9:50 p.m. The blast injured two officers and damaged surrounding houses.

The injured, two 22-year-old privates from the Naval Special Warfare Command Unit 33, were taken to Tak Bai Hospital and later transferred to Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Hospital in Muang District, Narathiwat Province. Both suffered burn wounds from bomb fragments – one on the back, the other on the right arm and left leg.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units and forensic teams are examining the scene, collecting evidence to track down the perpetrators as quickly as possible.

Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, commented on the possible link between this incident and the Tak Bai case from twenty years ago. He said it’s possible, as the Tak Bai case is currently in the spotlight due to its statute of limitations expiring on October 25, 2024.

Phumtham takbai
Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, comments on the possible link between this incident and the Tak Bai case from twenty years ago.

As a result, local authorities are trying to address security issues, sealing off the entire municipal area and advising people to be cautious when entering or leaving, recommending they carry identification for checks.

When asked if he had contacted Gen. Pisarn Wattanawongkeeree, a Pheu Thai Party MP and former 4th Army Region Commander who is one of the accused in this case, Phumtham said they had made contact but only reached his registered address. He sent a message suggesting that everything should be resolved in court, where the accused can prove themselves, to bring closure to the matter.

Meanwhile, Chatchai Bangchod, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Security Council (NSC), stated that the increased frequency of insurgent activities in the southern border provinces is due to various factors. It may be a series of connected incidents, as this is a transitional period for the government, military, and related agencies, with new appointees entering the area.

Regarding the use of the Emergency Decree in the area, Chatchai said they would continue to consider it on an area-by-area basis, taking into account various factors including incident statistics. It will be used only as necessary to prevent and investigate incidents. However, he noted that the government aims to eventually lift the decree’s enforcement in the future.

The long-delayed legal action in connection with what is known as the Tak Bai massacre came just over a month before the statute of limitations expires on the case. Eight former state security personnel accused of responsibility for the deaths of 78 Muslim protesters who were arrested in southern Thailand in 2004 will be indicted on murder charges.

On Oct. 25, 2004, thousands of protesters gathered at the police station in Narathiwat’s Tak Bai district to demand the immediate release of six Muslim men who had been detained several days earlier.

After the protest turned violent, around 1,300 protesters were rounded up by soldiers and forced to lie on top of each other in 25 trucks before they were transported to a military camp in neighboring Pattani province, two hours’ drive away.

When they reached the destination, officials reported 78 people had died. Autopsy results revealed suffocation was the cause of death. Seven others had been shot dead during the protest.

The deaths occurred shortly after a Muslim separatist insurgency erupted in Thailand’s southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, the only ones with Muslim majorities in the Buddhist-dominated nation.

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — The number of people killed by flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall over the weekend in Nepal has reached 193 while recovery and rescue work has been stepped up, officials said Monday.

A police statement said there were 31 people who were still reported missing and 96 people were injured across the Himalayan nation.

Many of the deaths were in the capital, Kathmandu, which got heavy rainfall, and much of southern part of the city was flooded.

At least three buses stuck in traffic jam were buried by a landslide that killed three dozen people at a point on the highway about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Kathmandu. Because of the blocked road, people in the buses and other vehicles were sleeping when the landslide buried the vehicles.

Kathmandu had remained cut off all weekend as the three highways out of the city were blocked by landslides. Workers were able to temporarily open up the key Prithvi highway, removing rocks, mud and trees that had been washed from the mountains.

Weather improved on Sunday and Monday, allowing rescue and recovery work to be stepped up.

Residents in the southern part of Kathmandu, which was inundated on Saturday, were cleaning up houses as water levels began to recede. At least 34 people were killed in Kathmandu, which was the hardest hit by flooding.

Police and soldiers were assisting with rescue efforts, while heavy equipment was used to clear the landslides from the roads. The government announced it was closing schools and colleges across Nepal for the next three days.

The monsoon season began in June and usually ends by mid-September.

A source from Thailand Post Company revealed that after discussions with the Zoological Park Organization late last week, normally, the production of stamps by Thailand Post is planned well in advance and it’s difficult to change the printing format.

The company has submitted a proposal and copyright fees for the Zoological Park Organization to consider. The quantity of Moo Deng stamps to be produced will be in the range of 10,000 sets to meet current popularity.

If the Zoological Park Organization agrees to the proposal, printing can begin immediately, as the design for the bouncing pig stamps is already complete.
