SURIN  — The Thai national team has won another medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. “Wave” Weeraphon Wichuma from Surin Province secured the silver medal in the men’s weightlifting category up to 73 kg.

He is another athlete from the northeast of Thailand to win a medal, following “Fang” Theeraphong Silachai from Sisaket province, who won silver in the men’s weightlifting up to 61 kg.

The cheering crowd in Surin for “Wave” Weeraphon was so enthusiastic, even though it was late at night in Thailand, around 1.00 to 2.30 a.m.

At house number 32, Moo 6, Ban Kaen Methee, Kud Wai Subdistrict, Sikhoraphum District, Surin Province, a projector was set up in front of the house on Thursday evening so that relatives, neighbors and villagers could support Weeraphon. His parents, Mr. Nil and Mrs. Chantra Wichuma, focused intently on the screen.

Before the competition, the couple lit incense and prayed to a picture of Luang Singh Thammasaro, a revered monk who Weeraphon respects, which was placed next to the screen.

In the first discipline, the snatch, the fans were very worried as Weeraphon’s score was lower than that of his competitors. During the clean and jerk competition, however, the crowd went wild as Weeraphon improved his performance, catching up and eventually winning 2nd place.

Mr. Nil and Mrs. Chantra Wichuma almost fainted from sheer excitement, whereupon neighbors and relatives offered smelling salts.

The parents expressed their great joy in tears. When they saw their son in 9th place, they didn’t know what to do at first and never thought he could catch up. But later they were relieved and proud of their son’s achievement. They plan to fulfill their vow to holy entities as they promised now that success has come. They also thanked the entire nation for cheering their son on.

Afterwards, Weeraphon’s parents bowed to the image of Luang Pu Singh placed next to the projection screen as a gesture of gratitude and relief.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin congratulated Weeraphon on the morning of 9 August, stating, “Thailand’s sixth medal, another source of pride for the Thai people.”

The Prime Minister pointed out that our wave not only won the silver medal, but also broke the junior world record in the clean and jerk by lifting 198 kilograms with a total weight of 346 kg — a remarkable achievement.

As for the prize money, Wave Weeraphon will receive 7.2 million baht from the National Sports Development Fund (NDSF) and the Sports Authority of Thailand. The amount will be paid out 50 percent as a lump sum, with the remaining 50 percent being distributed monthly over a period of four years.

Weeraphon will also celebrate his 20th birthday on August 10

Thai Opposition Unveils People’s Party; Thanathorn’s Allies Take Helm

BANGKOK —  The People’s Party, the new name for the Move Forward Party, has found ways to continue their political journey as many, including Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, predicted. This is similar to when the Future Forward Party was dissolved and changed its name to the Move Forward Party in 2020.

All 143 Move Forward Party MPs have registered as members of the People’s Party with 100% participation on August 9, 2024 at the Thai Summit building, Bangkok.

Natthaphong Ruangpanyawut, 37, former deputy secretary-general of the Move Forward Party, has been elected as the leader of the People’s Party. Sarayut Jailak, former director of the Move Forward Party, has been chosen as the new party secretary. Both are close to Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the chairman of the Progressive Movement and former leader of the Future Forward Party.

Thanathorn posted a message after the Move Forward Party was ordered to dissolve by the Constitutional Court. The dissolution was due to the party promoting the amendment of Article 112, a law that criminalizes insulting the royal family, as a main policy in the 2023 election campaign. Thanathorn’s message, ‘Shrug and move on,’ conveyed an attitude of disregard for the party dissolution and a determination to move forward.

He stated that the Move Forward Party did better than the Future Forward Party, so the party that succeeds Move Forward will do even better, predicting a landslide victory in the next election in 2027.

Natthaphong, nicknamed “Teng,” who graduated from Chulalongkorn University with a degree in computer engineering, said about the People’s Party under his leadership that they will do something very simple: make politics belong to everyone, to the people. As long as they receive this support, he is ready to push himself forward, with his unmatched asset being hard work, to lead the party to election victory.

When asked if Thanathorn gave him any advice, Nattapong said that they talked a few days ago, and Thanathorn told him that if he takes this position and becomes a prime ministerial candidate, he must develop himself, see policies from many aspects, and work hard.

“I think what Thanathorn recommended is most correct. Today at this press conference, I think one of the most important things is that if I propose myself as a prime ministerial candidate, I will communicate directly. What influences me is ideology and belief, not individuals.”

He also said that regarding prime ministerial candidates, the party has learned from past lessons and will be open to proposing multiple names, but this must be discussed in the future. As for himself, he is ready to represent everyone, while the prime minister must be ready in all aspects. Currently, he is prepared to improve himself further.

The new party leader also confirmed that the People’s Party will propose a draft amendment to Article 112, noting that the court’s ruling did not prohibit amendments. He emphasized that the party will not be careless and will proceed carefully, studying all legal aspects.

‘This is not a matter of self-censorship. We propose based on principles. We are not aiming to erode or undermine any institution. According to the current constitution, we must adhere to the Constitutional Court’s ruling,’ said Natthaphong.

When asked how he would negotiate with old power groups in the future, Natthaphong said he would not trade the people’s interests or anything that would compromise the party’s ideology.

Sarayut Jailak, the new party secretary, spoke about his close relationship with Thanathorn, saying they’ve known each other for over 20 years, since being deputy of the Student Federation in 2000. They’ve been associated as friends and co-founded parties together since Future Forward.

“As friends, we meet and talk, but we understand well that each organization has its own management and working structure. The decision-making power lies with the party’s executive committee. We work with good understanding,” Sarayut said.

Ms. Sirikanya Tansakul, who was originally expected to be the new party leader, was asked if the party changed because they didn’t want to be compared to Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the female leader of the Pheu Thai Party.

sirikanya peopleparty
Sirikanya Tansakul

She replied that the party is focusing on the next election. She has the task of working in-depth on policies, developing policies further, working behind the scenes, setting standards for the People’s Party and MPs. It’s a responsibility she willingly accepts, so she should be in a position to support the next party leader. There was no discussion about confrontation or avoiding confrontation with anyone.

The Move Forward Party previously made exciting history when it won the 2023 election with the highest number of MPs, 151 seats, causing the Pheu Thai Party, which had been dissolved twice, to lose for the first time, with a difference of 10 seats.

However, Pheu Thai was able to form a coalition government with parties that had previously supported the military. A crucial factor in this alliance was Pheu Thai’s agreement not to pursue any amendments to Article 112, unlike the Move Forward Party’s stance.

The breaking of the old alliance between Pheu Thai and Move Forward has led supporters of both parties to engage in ongoing political debates. Many cases reflect hate speech rather than rational discourse.

Move Forward supporters accuse Pheu Thai of being treacherous and compromising with old power groups merely to benefit the Shinawatra family.

people party logo 1
People’s Party unveils its new logo, which is similar to the Move Forward Party’s.

Pheu Thai supporters retort that the Move Forward Party is “Salim Phase 2,” referring to middle-class groups who consider themselves better, more capable, and more progressive than others, who once came out to support the military’s seizure of power from Yingluck Shinawatra’s government.

This resentment was also expressed on the day Move Forward was ordered to dissolve. Although Chaturon Chaisang, a Pheu Thai MP, posted sympathetic comments and encouraged Move Forward, he was one of those who faced angry reactions from Move Forward supporters.

As the People’s Party unveiled its new logo, Move Forward opponents mockingly pointed out that the party’s logo plagiarized a Japanese energy drink.

Besides the logo, the declaration of the People’s Party political ideology is : Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, which are regarded as the most famous slogan of the French Revolution.

people party2
The cover page of People’s Party says: By the people, for the people, building a Thailand where supreme power belongs to the people.

The party states: The People’s Party adheres to the democratic system with the King as Head of State, the rule of law, human dignity, human rights, political, economic, and social equality, decentralization of governance, gender diversity, cultural diversity, free market economy, free and fair competition without monopolies, sustainable development with consideration for natural resources and environmental impacts, welfare system creation, and creating opportunities for humans to live with dignity and quality from birth to death.

The People’s Party believes in the possibility of a new world, new society, and new politics. They affirm the principle that sovereign power belongs to the people, and the use of state power must be related to and connected with the people.

In addition, the disbanded Move Forward Party changed its name and logo on Friday, to that of the People’s Party on social media. The first paragraph of its manifesto partly stated: “The sacred and most enduring institution in the democratic political system is the people who hold sovereign power.”

This expression of identity by the People’s Party, or the former Move Forward Party and former Future Forward Party, should reassure party supporters that the party remains unchanged. However, it raises questions about whether the People’s Party can move forward on a path that doesn’t repeat past experiences of being targeted, and how it will find political allies.

Dreams of a New Home: Olympic Medalist Theeraphong’s Gift to His Father

SISAKET — “Fang” Theeraphong Silachai, a Thai national weightlifting athlete, won the silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the men’s 61 kg weight category. He is another person from the northeastern region of Thailand who has achieved a feat that brings pride to his local community.

Many Thai athletes who compete in strength-focused sports like weightlifting and boxing come from the Northeastern region (Isan) and from families with difficult financial circumstances. This includes Theeraphong, whose father supported his upbringing by selling aromatic coconuts from a motorcycle with a sidecar in Sisaket Province.

Theeraphong said that with the prize money he received from winning the silver medal, the first thing he wants to do is build a house for his father. He wants his father to have a home to live in. As for the remaining money, he hasn’t thought about or planned anything yet. He will probably save it for future use.

On August 8, Sem Silachai, Theeraphong’s father, gave an interview in Krabaudeu Village, Krahwan Subdistrict, Khun Han District, Sisaket, as relatives gathered to celebrate with joy and pride. Sem and the villagers also offered incense and candles at the village’s sacred shrine, where he had previously prayed for his son’s success.

Sem Silachai, father of “Fang” Theeraphong Silachai, a Thai national weightlifting athlete who won the silver medal, gave an interview to reporters at his village in Sisaket Province on August 8, 2024.

He expressed his overwhelming joy and sleepless excitement. During the live broadcast of the competition, he was worried whether his son would be able to compete against the bigger athletes from other countries.

As he watched his son triumph over his competitors, he was immensely proud that his son had brought glory to the country and exceeded expectations by winning a silver medal after originally hoping for bronze at best.

The first thing he wanted to do was to hold a traditional ceremony to boost his son’s morale.

Sa-ngiam Muangsi, 66, Theeraphong’s aunt, said Fang had loved weightlifting since childhood. He trained diligently and participated in weightlifting since the third grade with the help of a physical education teacher at his elementary school. She is happy and proud of her nephew and wishes him to continue his efforts.

Theeraphong Silachai was born on May 29, 2003. He finished elementary school at Krabautalung Wittaya School, Krahwan sub-district, Khun Han district, Sisaket province. He then continued his education at Rajaprajanugroh 29 School in Sisaket Province until he graduated from high school and continued his studies at the National Sports College, Sisaket Campus. He is currently in his second year of studies, majoring in Sports Science and Health.

He started weightlifting seriously at Rajaprajanugroh 29 School in Sisaket Province in 2015 and attended the national team training camp in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province in 2017.

Theeraphong’s achievements include winning a silver medal in the men’s 61 kg category at the 2024 World Championships in Phuket, Thailand (one Olympic qualifying round), two bronze medals in the men’s 61 kg category at the 2023 Asian Championships in South Korea (one Olympic qualifying round) and two gold medals in the men’s 55kg category at the 2022 World Championships in Colombia (one Olympic qualifying round).

Nobel Laureate Yunus Arrives in Bangladesh to Take Over as Interim Leader

Muhammad Yunus

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Bangladesh’s next leader Muhammad Yunus arrived home Thursday from an overseas trip and will take office later in the day, as he looks to restore calm and rebuild the country following an uprising that ended the 15-year, increasingly autocratic rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Yunus landed at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday afternoon and was welcomed by the country’s military chief, Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman, who was flanked by navy and air force heads.

Some of the student leaders who led the uprising against Hasina were also present at the airport to welcome him. They had earlier proposed Yunus as interim leader to the country’s figurehead president, who is currently acting as the chief executive under the constitution.

In his first comments after his arrival, he told a news briefing that his priority would be to restore order.

“Bangladesh is a family. We have to unite it,” Yunus said, flanked by the student leaders. “It has immense possibility.”

He urged all to stop violence and promised not to resort to any repressive measures against anyone.

Security was tight at the airport to ensure Yunus’ safe arrival, as the country has experienced days of unrest following the downfall of Hasina on Monday. President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath-taking ceremony on Thursday night when Yunus is expected to announce his new Cabinet.

Before leaving Paris, where he was attending the Olympics, Yunus appealed for calm in Bangladesh amid tensions over the country’s future.

Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who acts as an adviser to his mother, vowed Wednesday that his family and the Awami League party would continue to be engaged in Bangladesh’s politics — a reversal from what he’d said earlier in the week after Hasina stepped down Monday and fled to India.

Yunuswas named as interim leader following talks among military officials, civic leaders and the student activists who led the uprising against Hasina. Yunus made his first public comments in the French capital on Wednesday before boarding a plane to return home.

Yunus congratulated the student protesters, saying they had made “our second Victory Day possible,” and he appealed to them and other stakeholders to remain peaceful, while condemning the violence that followed Hasina’s resignation.

“Violence is our enemy. Please don’t create more enemies. Be calm and get ready to build the country,” Yunus said.

Bangladesh’s military chief, Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman, said in a televised address on Wednesday that he expected Yunus to usher in a “beautiful democratic” process.

Yunus, who was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work developing microcredit markets, told reporters in Paris: “I’m looking forward to going back home and seeing what’s happening there, and how we can organize ourselves to get out of the trouble that we are in.″

Asked when elections would be held, he put his hands up as if to indicate it was too early to say.

“I’ll go and talk to them. I’m just fresh in this whole area,” he said.

AP24220469809542

A tribunal in Dhaka earlier on Wednesday acquitted Yunus in a labor law violation case involving a telecommunication company he founded, in which he was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail. He had been released on bail in the case.

The president had dissolved Parliament on Tuesday, clearing the path for an interim administration that is expected to schedule new elections.

Yunus has been a longtime opponent of Hasina, who had called him a “bloodsucker” allegedly for using force to extract loan repayments from rural poor, mainly women. Yunus has denied the allegations.

In a span of weeks since July 15, more than 300 people died in violence in Bangladesh. Rising tensions in the days surrounding Hasina’s resignation created chaos, with police leaving their posts after being attacked. Dozens of officers were killed, prompting police to stop working across the country. They threatened not to return unless their safety is ensured. The looting of firearms was also reported in local media.

The chaos began in July with protests against a quota system for government jobs that critics said favored people with connections to Hasina’s party. But the demonstrations soon grew into a broader challenge to Hasina’s 15-year rule, which was marked by human rights abuses, corruption, allegations of rigged elections and a brutal crackdown on her opponents.

Joy, Hasina’s son, said in a social media post on Wednesday that his family would return to politics and not give up following attacks on the Awami League party’s leaders and members. Many see Joy as Hasina’s successor in a dynastic political culture that dominates the South Asian nation’s politics.

On Monday, Joy had said Hasina would not return to politics after she stepped down. But in a video message posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday, he urged party activists to rise up.

“You are not alone. We are here. The family of Bangabandhu has not gone anywhere,” he said.

Hasina’s father, independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is fondly referred to in Bangladesh as Bangabandhu, which means “friend of Bengal.”

“If we want to build a new Bangladesh, it is not possible without the Awami League,” he said.

“The Awami League is the oldest, democratic, and largest party in Bangladesh,” Joy added. “The Awami League has not died … It is not possible to eliminate the Awami League. We had said that our family would not engage in politics anymore. However, given the attacks on our leaders and activists, we cannot give up.”

Overnight into Thursday, residents across Dhaka carried sticks, iron rods and sharp weapons to guard their neighborhoods amid reports of robberies. Communities used loudspeakers in mosques to alert people that robberies were occurring, as police remained off duty. The military shared hotline numbers for people seeking help.

The quick move to select Yunus came when Hasina’s resignation created a power vacuum and left the future unclear for Bangladesh, which has a history of military rule, messy politics and myriad crises.

Many fear that Hasina’s departure could trigger even more instability in the densely populated nation of some 170 million people, which is already dealing with high unemployment, corruption and a complex strategic relationship with India, China and the United States.

Hasina, 76, was elected to a fourth consecutive term in January, in an election boycotted by her main opponents. Thousands of opposition members were jailed before the vote, and the U.S. and U.K. denounced the result as not credible.

“For me, this gold medal is the best birthday present of my life and I would like to dedicate it to all the Thai people who cheered me on. Despite the numerous injuries I have had to deal with, I am grateful for everyone’s support and compassion, and I want to give it back to everyone,” she added.

Panipak went on to explain the difference between her first gold medal at the Tokyo Games and this second medal. “Everyone tried to study me better this time because they know my strengths and techniques. The challenge was to analyze each competitor thoroughly, which made it a very challenging experience.

After grabbing a Thai flag and jumping into her coach’s arm, the two-time Olympic gold medal winner also spoke about the stress she was under.

“I was very stressed, but I had a psychologist who helped me and advised me to treat this as just another match like the Paris Open. I had already played all my opponents and knew their strengths and weaknesses, which helped me to relax and stay present in the moment. I restarted after every point because I knew everything could change and I had to give it my all.”

She trailed in the first round against Guo Qing of China but rallied with two consecutive kicks to the body and head. Guo fought back to force a decider, but Panipak prevailed after video reviews showed that she had successfully landed two spectacular head kicks.

“In the last 30 seconds, I felt like it was my last chance and as I had nothing to lose, I gave it my all. Like I said, if I was going to lose, I wanted to lose knowing that I had given my best. I kicked with all my might and asked Coach Choi for a video replay. Everything went as I had hoped and I enjoyed the game so that I could fulfill my potential,” she concluded.

Panipak is from Surat Thani. Her father is also very fond of sports and is a swimming instructor. Her mother is a swimmer and an aerobics dance instructor.

Her nickname “Tennis” comes from her parents’ love of sports. They decided to name all three of their children after different types of sports. The eldest son is named Baseball, the second daughter is named Bowling, and the youngest daughter is named Tennis.

Panipak started taekwondo at the age of 7 and initially trained like any other child until, at the age of 9, she decided to take part in a competition in Phuket because her father promised her a reward if she won a medal. However, she lost and was ridiculed by her classmates, which awakened her determination to take the sport seriously.

She continued to train diligently, facing defeat and disappointment, until she won a small competition at the age of 12. At 13, she won gold at the National Youth Games, which marked the beginning of her journey as a member of the Thai national team.

After joining the national team, Panipak achieved numerous successes, winning 27 championships and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. To the delight of the entire nation, she won Thailand’s first taekwondo gold medal at the 2020 Olympics and made history for Thai taekwondo by winning another gold medal.

“I have so much pain,” she said on the eve of her 27th birthday. “I had a broken knee. And my ankle, my hip… Now, I have to retire.”

Panipak announced that she wants to support young athletes after her retirement from the Olympic Games in Paris by founding the “Panipak Gym.” Then she jokingly advertised through the reporters, saying, ‘If anyone wants to learn (Taekwondo) with me, come to Thailand.’

This elicited laughter from the reporters in the press room.

PIPATCHARA

BANGKOK — The Paralympic Committee of Thailand has invited Thai disabled athletes and coaching staff to contribute their ideas for the design of the uniforms for the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paralympic Games.

This collaborative effort involves working with the Thai fashion brand PIPATCHARA, actively gathering feedback from the athletes to ensure the uniforms meet their needs and accommodate their specific lifestyle requirements. The goal is to provide maximum comfort while aligning with the athletes’ customary challenges.

PIPATCHARA has selected recycled materials for these uniforms, incorporating traditional Thai macramé art for the strap weaving of the pouches, and also collaborated with FBT to design competitions, training, and warm-up suits. The design features Braille, the universal script for the visually impaired, prominently integrated into the sportswear to symbolize the athletes’ representation of Thailand with the expression “THAILAND.”
