SISAKET — “Fang” Theeraphong Silachai, a Thai national weightlifting athlete, won the silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the men’s 61 kg weight category. He is another person from the northeastern region of Thailand who has achieved a feat that brings pride to his local community.

Many Thai athletes who compete in strength-focused sports like weightlifting and boxing come from the Northeastern region (Isan) and from families with difficult financial circumstances. This includes Theeraphong, whose father supported his upbringing by selling aromatic coconuts from a motorcycle with a sidecar in Sisaket Province.

Theeraphong said that with the prize money he received from winning the silver medal, the first thing he wants to do is build a house for his father. He wants his father to have a home to live in. As for the remaining money, he hasn’t thought about or planned anything yet. He will probably save it for future use.

On August 8, Sem Silachai, Theeraphong’s father, gave an interview in Krabaudeu Village, Krahwan Subdistrict, Khun Han District, Sisaket, as relatives gathered to celebrate with joy and pride. Sem and the villagers also offered incense and candles at the village’s sacred shrine, where he had previously prayed for his son’s success.

Sem Silachai, father of “Fang” Theeraphong Silachai, a Thai national weightlifting athlete who won the silver medal, gave an interview to reporters at his village in Sisaket Province on August 8, 2024.

He expressed his overwhelming joy and sleepless excitement. During the live broadcast of the competition, he was worried whether his son would be able to compete against the bigger athletes from other countries.

As he watched his son triumph over his competitors, he was immensely proud that his son had brought glory to the country and exceeded expectations by winning a silver medal after originally hoping for bronze at best.

The first thing he wanted to do was to hold a traditional ceremony to boost his son’s morale.

Sa-ngiam Muangsi, 66, Theeraphong’s aunt, said Fang had loved weightlifting since childhood. He trained diligently and participated in weightlifting since the third grade with the help of a physical education teacher at his elementary school. She is happy and proud of her nephew and wishes him to continue his efforts.

Theeraphong Silachai was born on May 29, 2003. He finished elementary school at Krabautalung Wittaya School, Krahwan sub-district, Khun Han district, Sisaket province. He then continued his education at Rajaprajanugroh 29 School in Sisaket Province until he graduated from high school and continued his studies at the National Sports College, Sisaket Campus. He is currently in his second year of studies, majoring in Sports Science and Health.

He started weightlifting seriously at Rajaprajanugroh 29 School in Sisaket Province in 2015 and attended the national team training camp in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province in 2017.

Theeraphong’s achievements include winning a silver medal in the men’s 61 kg category at the 2024 World Championships in Phuket, Thailand (one Olympic qualifying round), two bronze medals in the men’s 61 kg category at the 2023 Asian Championships in South Korea (one Olympic qualifying round) and two gold medals in the men’s 55kg category at the 2022 World Championships in Colombia (one Olympic qualifying round).

Nobel Laureate Yunus Arrives in Bangladesh to Take Over as Interim Leader

Muhammad Yunus

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Bangladesh’s next leader Muhammad Yunus arrived home Thursday from an overseas trip and will take office later in the day, as he looks to restore calm and rebuild the country following an uprising that ended the 15-year, increasingly autocratic rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Yunus landed at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday afternoon and was welcomed by the country’s military chief, Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman, who was flanked by navy and air force heads.

Some of the student leaders who led the uprising against Hasina were also present at the airport to welcome him. They had earlier proposed Yunus as interim leader to the country’s figurehead president, who is currently acting as the chief executive under the constitution.

In his first comments after his arrival, he told a news briefing that his priority would be to restore order.

“Bangladesh is a family. We have to unite it,” Yunus said, flanked by the student leaders. “It has immense possibility.”

He urged all to stop violence and promised not to resort to any repressive measures against anyone.

Security was tight at the airport to ensure Yunus’ safe arrival, as the country has experienced days of unrest following the downfall of Hasina on Monday. President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath-taking ceremony on Thursday night when Yunus is expected to announce his new Cabinet.

Before leaving Paris, where he was attending the Olympics, Yunus appealed for calm in Bangladesh amid tensions over the country’s future.

Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who acts as an adviser to his mother, vowed Wednesday that his family and the Awami League party would continue to be engaged in Bangladesh’s politics — a reversal from what he’d said earlier in the week after Hasina stepped down Monday and fled to India.

Yunuswas named as interim leader following talks among military officials, civic leaders and the student activists who led the uprising against Hasina. Yunus made his first public comments in the French capital on Wednesday before boarding a plane to return home.

Yunus congratulated the student protesters, saying they had made “our second Victory Day possible,” and he appealed to them and other stakeholders to remain peaceful, while condemning the violence that followed Hasina’s resignation.

“Violence is our enemy. Please don’t create more enemies. Be calm and get ready to build the country,” Yunus said.

Bangladesh’s military chief, Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman, said in a televised address on Wednesday that he expected Yunus to usher in a “beautiful democratic” process.

Yunus, who was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work developing microcredit markets, told reporters in Paris: “I’m looking forward to going back home and seeing what’s happening there, and how we can organize ourselves to get out of the trouble that we are in.″

Asked when elections would be held, he put his hands up as if to indicate it was too early to say.

“I’ll go and talk to them. I’m just fresh in this whole area,” he said.

A tribunal in Dhaka earlier on Wednesday acquitted Yunus in a labor law violation case involving a telecommunication company he founded, in which he was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail. He had been released on bail in the case.

The president had dissolved Parliament on Tuesday, clearing the path for an interim administration that is expected to schedule new elections.

Yunus has been a longtime opponent of Hasina, who had called him a “bloodsucker” allegedly for using force to extract loan repayments from rural poor, mainly women. Yunus has denied the allegations.

In a span of weeks since July 15, more than 300 people died in violence in Bangladesh. Rising tensions in the days surrounding Hasina’s resignation created chaos, with police leaving their posts after being attacked. Dozens of officers were killed, prompting police to stop working across the country. They threatened not to return unless their safety is ensured. The looting of firearms was also reported in local media.

The chaos began in July with protests against a quota system for government jobs that critics said favored people with connections to Hasina’s party. But the demonstrations soon grew into a broader challenge to Hasina’s 15-year rule, which was marked by human rights abuses, corruption, allegations of rigged elections and a brutal crackdown on her opponents.

Joy, Hasina’s son, said in a social media post on Wednesday that his family would return to politics and not give up following attacks on the Awami League party’s leaders and members. Many see Joy as Hasina’s successor in a dynastic political culture that dominates the South Asian nation’s politics.

On Monday, Joy had said Hasina would not return to politics after she stepped down. But in a video message posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday, he urged party activists to rise up.

“You are not alone. We are here. The family of Bangabandhu has not gone anywhere,” he said.

Hasina’s father, independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is fondly referred to in Bangladesh as Bangabandhu, which means “friend of Bengal.”

“If we want to build a new Bangladesh, it is not possible without the Awami League,” he said.

“The Awami League is the oldest, democratic, and largest party in Bangladesh,” Joy added. “The Awami League has not died … It is not possible to eliminate the Awami League. We had said that our family would not engage in politics anymore. However, given the attacks on our leaders and activists, we cannot give up.”

Overnight into Thursday, residents across Dhaka carried sticks, iron rods and sharp weapons to guard their neighborhoods amid reports of robberies. Communities used loudspeakers in mosques to alert people that robberies were occurring, as police remained off duty. The military shared hotline numbers for people seeking help.

The quick move to select Yunus came when Hasina’s resignation created a power vacuum and left the future unclear for Bangladesh, which has a history of military rule, messy politics and myriad crises.

Many fear that Hasina’s departure could trigger even more instability in the densely populated nation of some 170 million people, which is already dealing with high unemployment, corruption and a complex strategic relationship with India, China and the United States.

Hasina, 76, was elected to a fourth consecutive term in January, in an election boycotted by her main opponents. Thousands of opposition members were jailed before the vote, and the U.S. and U.K. denounced the result as not credible.

Second Gold: “Tennis” Panipak Says This Is the Best Birthday Gift Ever

Panipak
From Tokyo (left) to Paris, Panipak Wongpattanakit has become the first Thai athlete in any sport to become a two-time Olympic champion on August 7, 2024.

PARIS — Winning an Olympic gold medal on your birthday is a rare event, which is why “Tennis” Panipak Wongpattanakit described it as the best gift of her life.

Panipak Wongpattanakit became the first Thai athlete to become a double Olympic champion in any sport on Wednesday. She defended her title from the games in Tokyo and secured Thailand’s first gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Panipak, who turned 27 on 8 August, expressed her joy and pride: “I am very happy and proud to make history for Thailand. This medal is the reward for all my hard work and dedication. She was grateful to her coach Choi Young Seok, Pimol Srivikorn, also known as ‘Big A’, the President of the Thai Taekwondo Association, and all her coaches and her teammates who have supported me to this point.

“For me, this gold medal is the best birthday present of my life and I would like to dedicate it to all the Thai people who cheered me on. Despite the numerous injuries I have had to deal with, I am grateful for everyone’s support and compassion, and I want to give it back to everyone,” she added.

Panipak went on to explain the difference between her first gold medal at the Tokyo Games and this second medal. “Everyone tried to study me better this time because they know my strengths and techniques. The challenge was to analyze each competitor thoroughly, which made it a very challenging experience.

After grabbing a Thai flag and jumping into her coach’s arm, the two-time Olympic gold medal winner also spoke about the stress she was under.

“I was very stressed, but I had a psychologist who helped me and advised me to treat this as just another match like the Paris Open. I had already played all my opponents and knew their strengths and weaknesses, which helped me to relax and stay present in the moment. I restarted after every point because I knew everything could change and I had to give it my all.”

She trailed in the first round against Guo Qing of China but rallied with two consecutive kicks to the body and head. Guo fought back to force a decider, but Panipak prevailed after video reviews showed that she had successfully landed two spectacular head kicks.

“In the last 30 seconds, I felt like it was my last chance and as I had nothing to lose, I gave it my all. Like I said, if I was going to lose, I wanted to lose knowing that I had given my best. I kicked with all my might and asked Coach Choi for a video replay. Everything went as I had hoped and I enjoyed the game so that I could fulfill my potential,” she concluded.

Panipak is from Surat Thani. Her father is also very fond of sports and is a swimming instructor. Her mother is a swimmer and an aerobics dance instructor.

Her nickname “Tennis” comes from her parents’ love of sports. They decided to name all three of their children after different types of sports. The eldest son is named Baseball, the second daughter is named Bowling, and the youngest daughter is named Tennis.

Panipak started taekwondo at the age of 7 and initially trained like any other child until, at the age of 9, she decided to take part in a competition in Phuket because her father promised her a reward if she won a medal. However, she lost and was ridiculed by her classmates, which awakened her determination to take the sport seriously.

She continued to train diligently, facing defeat and disappointment, until she won a small competition at the age of 12. At 13, she won gold at the National Youth Games, which marked the beginning of her journey as a member of the Thai national team.

After joining the national team, Panipak achieved numerous successes, winning 27 championships and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. To the delight of the entire nation, she won Thailand’s first taekwondo gold medal at the 2020 Olympics and made history for Thai taekwondo by winning another gold medal.

“I have so much pain,” she said on the eve of her 27th birthday. “I had a broken knee. And my ankle, my hip… Now, I have to retire.”

Panipak announced that she wants to support young athletes after her retirement from the Olympic Games in Paris by founding the “Panipak Gym.” Then she jokingly advertised through the reporters, saying, ‘If anyone wants to learn (Taekwondo) with me, come to Thailand.’

This elicited laughter from the reporters in the press room.

PIPATCHARA

BANGKOK — The Paralympic Committee of Thailand has invited Thai disabled athletes and coaching staff to contribute their ideas for the design of the uniforms for the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paralympic Games.

The goal is to provide maximum comfort while aligning with the athletes’ customary challenges.

PIPATCHARA has selected recycled materials for these uniforms, incorporating traditional Thai macramé art for the strap weaving of the pouches, and also collaborated with FBT to design competitions, training, and warm-up suits. Enrich Launches ‘The Article North Ratchaphruek’ in Luxury Home Market

‘Enrich’ Ventures into New Luxury Home Market with the Launch of ‘The Article North Ratchaphruek,’ Expanding into a New Luxury Hub in the Prime Ratchaphruek Location.

The Enrich Group has launched ‘The Article North Ratchaphruek,’ a luxury residential development located on the west side of Bangkok, an area experiencing high demand. Situated in Ratchaphruek, an emerging luxury hub, the project showcases a distinctive design inspired by modern lifestyle needs, with meticulous attention to detail to elevate contemporary living. This project is a joint effort between leading figures in the Thai and Japanese real estate sectors, aiming to redefine standards in the luxury housing market. According to CBRE, high-end and luxury homes in Ratchaphruek experienced a remarkable 385% surge in activity in Q1 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.

“The Article North Ratchaphruek” is a luxury residential development offering expansive single-family homes designed to maximize privacy. The project features modern architecture with a strong emphasis on functional design and optimal living spaces. Enrich selected Ratchaphruek for its burgeoning real estate market, which is increasingly expanding from the city center. The newly developed Ratchaphruek area is surrounded by a wealth of amenities, including community malls, leading department stores, and prestigious international schools.

The project embodies the concept of “Guiding You to Practical Living,” striving to perfectly meet residents’ needs and deliver an exceptional living environment. It also incorporates the “KonMari” home organization method, pioneered by global expert Marie Kondo, marking a first in Thailand’s real estate sector. This approach has received outstanding feedback through consultations with master-level experts.

Mr. Anavach Chatsirikul, CEO of Enrich Group, announced that “The Article North Ratchaphruek,” with a value exceeding 2.4 billion baht, is being developed in collaboration with Anabuki Kosan Group, one of Japan’s top 10 real estate developers. This partnership reflects the observed growth in the Ratchaphruek real estate market, particularly within the luxury segment. Although competition in the area is intense, there is still potential for market entry and competition.

“We recognize that this year’s real estate market presents several challenges, including heightened competition and longer decision-making times for consumers. Nevertheless, our business plan remains focused on driving continuous growth. Our target demographic, which spans from premium to luxury buyers, maintains significant purchasing power. Consequently, we are advancing with projects in high-potential locations, emphasizing unique features, functionalities, and living innovations. Our track record of successful project developments supports this approach,” Mr. Anavach added.

Enrich Group has a strong track record of developing diverse real estate projects and forming strategic partnerships with prominent business allies. This year, Enrich has collaborated with Anabuki Kosan Group to develop “The Article North Ratchaphruek” and has appointed CBRE Thailand, a leading global real estate consultancy, to provide marketing consultation and sales management for the project.  This partnership ensures that the project stands out with its unique design, functionality, and choice of materials, distinguishing it from competitors and appealing to luxury buyers.

Ms. Suphicha Nutsuwanpol, Business Office Director at Enrich Group, highlighted that Enrich’s project development philosophy is “Guiding You to Practical Living.” This philosophy emphasizes high-quality living standards and compelling products, with a keen focus on every detail from initial design through to the final move-in process. The project also incorporates the KonMari method by Marie Kondo, marking Enrich as the first in Thailand to apply this renowned concept in real estate, and has received outstanding feedback from master-level consultants aimed at enhancing future residents’ living experiences.

“Given the high level of competition in the real estate market in this area, we are dedicated to developing projects with distinctive designs and prioritizing family living experiences. A significant feature is our Customization system, which allows customers to tailor certain aspects of their homes to fit evolving trends and lifestyles, meeting the diverse needs of our target audience,” Ms. Suphicha added.

The decision to develop the project in Ratchaphruek is driven by the observed trend of real estate market growth moving outwards from the city center, particularly towards western Bangkok. This area has seen increasing development of amenities, including community malls, major department stores, and prestigious international schools. “The Article North Ratchaphruek” is conveniently located just 300 meters from Robinson Lifestyle Ratchaphruek. It is designed to meet the needs of young families who require more living space and flexible work arrangements, offering easy access to transportation and addressing these needs effectively.

Mr. Masaaki Kagawa, Management Director of Anabuki Kosan Group, emphasized that the decision to partner with Enrich Group was based on shared visions and working approaches. He highlighted Enrich’s dedication to quality project development, exceptional design focus, and strategic location choices. Anabuki Kosan Group chose to collaborate with Enrich because of their meticulous attention to detail and commitment to innovative product development.

“We find Enrich’s products to be distinctive and appealing. They have successfully addressed client needs with an emphasis on design, convenience, and strategic planning,” Mr. Kagawa stated.

Ms. Artitaya Kasemlawan, Head of Residential Sales – Project at CBRE Thailand, reported that 31 new housing projects launched in the market in Q1 2024, adding a total of 5,032 units. This reflected a 15.3% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The Western Suburbs area has been growing consistently since 2022, with project launches rising by 145% in 2022 and 18% in 2023. By the end of Q1 2024, this area led suburban locations in new project launches. The high-end and above segment saw a significant surge in project launches, posting a 227% increase in

2023 over 2022, and a staggering 385% increase in Q1 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Ms. Artitaya explained that significant infrastructure developments drove the growth of the luxury housing market in Ratchaphruek. New road constructions and expansions, such as the new Ratchaphruek Road and Chaiyaphruek Road, have strengthened links to major transport routes. These improvements have enhanced connectivity between Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani. Large shopping centers like Robinson Lifestyle Ratchaphruek and Central Westgate also support local lifestyle needs. Ratchaphruek’s connection to Chaeng Watthana Road, a business hub housing key government and national companies, further stimulates demand and growth in the residential market.

image2 3

“Another major appeal of ‘The Article North Ratchaphruek’ is its strategic location in a high-growth area with excellent infrastructure, transportation and amenities. Its proximity to Robinson Lifestyle Ratchaphruek, just 300 meters away, provides convenience and a variety of dining options. The land value in the area has been on a steady upswing, with a 21% increase projected for the 2023-2026 valuation period. This location holds the potential to become the next luxury home hub, akin to areas such as Ekkamai-Ramintra and Krungthep-Kreetha. The project distinguishes itself from typical market offerings with its superior design, high-quality materials, and customization options, presenting high-end homes in a premium Ratchaphruek location,” Ms. Artitaya concluded.
