Thai Army Rescues 12 Moroccans from Myanmar Casino Call Center Scam

Moroccan
12 Moroccan citizens have safely arrived on the Thai side on July 5, 2024.

BANGKOK —  Sutin Klungsang, Minister of Defense, expressed his admiration for the performance of the Royal Thai Army forces who assisted Moroccan citizens who were deceived into working for a call center gang in Myanmar.

In this case, the State Security and Thai Border Affairs Committee was informed that the Moroccan Ambassador had requested assistance for over 150 Moroccan citizens trapped with a call center gang in Myanmar. However, intelligence revealed that about 21 people were in a casino opposite Phop Phra District, Tak Province.

The committee then coordinated with the Royal Thai Army, which gathered intelligence on the exact location, finding it to be in a casino. Once all details were known, the Army coordinated with the DKBA forces to help negotiate with the casino personnel.

Intelligence revealed that 21 Moroccan citizens were tricked by a call center gang from their own country to come work. During negotiations, families of seven Moroccans had already paid ransoms for their release, and two others confirmed they wanted to stay. In total, 12 Moroccan citizens were to be released.

As of July 5, all of them have safely arrived on the Thai side. They were received by military personnel from the Ratchamanoon Task Force, Naresuan Force, and relevant officials, who will coordinate with the Moroccan Embassy in Thailand.

Fierce Fighting Breaks Out as Militias Launch New Attacks Against Regime in Myanmar’s Civil War

BANGKOK (AP) — New fighting has broken out in northeastern Myanmar, bringing an end to a Chinese-brokered cease-fire and putting pressure on the military regime as it faces attacks from resistance forces on multiple fronts in the country’s civil war.

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army, one of three powerful militias that launched a surprise joint offensive last October, renewed its attacks on regime positions last week in northeastern Shan state, which borders China, Laos and Thailand, and the neighboring Mandalay region with the support of local forces there.

Since then, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army has joined in, and by Friday, combined forces from the two allied militias had reportedly encircled the strategically important city of Lashio, headquarters of the regime’s northeastern military command.

This is the next phase of October’s “1027” offensive, said Lway Yay Oo, spokesperson for the TNLA, which last week said the military provoked retaliation with artillery and airstrikes despite the cease-fire.

“In phase two, our number one aim is the eradication of the military dictatorship, and number two is the protection and safety of local people,” she said.

Thet Swe, a spokesperson for the military regime, which seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, accused the militias of putting civilians in jeopardy by restarting the fighting.

“As the TNLA are starting to violate the cease-fire, the Tatmadaw is protecting the lives and the property of the ethnic people,” he said in an email to the AP, referring to the military by its Burmese name.

There was no indication that the third ethnic armed organization that makes up the Three Brotherhood Alliance, the powerful Arakan Army, has joined in the renewed fighting in Shan state, but its troops have never stopped fighting in its home Rakhine state, which was not covered by the Jan. 11 cease-fire.

The TNLA claims to have already captured more than 30 army outposts, and to now control the western part of Mogok, whose ruby mines make it a lucrative target. There is also fighting for the town of Kyaukme, which sits at a highway crossroads, and Nawnghkio to the southwest, which leads toward the major military garrison town of Pyin Oo Lwin along the same highway.

“That’s where you need to cut it off to prevent the military from sending reinforcements,” said Morgan Michaels, a Singapore-based analyst with the International Institute of Strategic Studies who runs its Myanmar Conflict Map project.

In Mandalay, the region west of Shan, a local People’s Defense Force — one of many armed resistance groups that have spung up in support of the underground National Unity Government, which views itself as Myanmar’s legitimate administration — joined the TNLA’s offensive.

Osmond, a spokesperson for the Mandalay People’s Defense Force who would only give his nom de guerre because of safety concerns, said his and other local resistance groups have seized nearly 20 military outposts.

The October offensive by the Three Brotherhood Alliance made rapid advances as the militias took large expanses of territory in the north and northeast, including multiple important border crossings with China and several major military bases.

The alliance militias have close ties to China, and it’s widely believed that the offensive had Beijing’s tacit approval because of its growing dissatisfaction with the military regime’s seeming indifference to the burgeoning drug trade along its border and the proliferation of centers in Myanmar at which cyberscams are run, with workers trafficked from China and elsewhere in the region.

China then helped broker the cease-fire in January, bringing the major fighting in the northeast to an end, even as other ethnic armed organizations and PDF groups launched their own attacks on regime positions elsewhere around the country.

(Mandalay People’s Defence Force via AP)

With the renewed violence in the northeast, China’s Foreign Ministry told the AP it stood ready to again provide support for peace talks, but would not say whether it had been in direct contact with the Three Brotherhood Alliance or the military State Administration Council.

“China urges all parties in Myanmar to earnestly abide by the cease-fire agreement, exercise maximum restraint, disengage on the ground as soon as possible, and take practical and effective measures to ensure the tranquility of the China-Myanmar border and the safety of Chinese personnel and projects,” the ministry said in a faxed reply to questions.

The Myanmar army doesn’t appear to have been surprised by the TNLA attacks, with evidence that it mobilized forces and prepared defenses as well as security checkpoints and patrols ahead of the renewed offensive, Michaels said.

“They didn’t get caught completely off guard, although they’ve not been able to respond yet, there’s been no counter-offensive,” he said.

It is not yet clear what the TNLA’s objectives are, and it could be that the group is just looking to expand gains and consolidate positions now while the military is stretched thin by fighting on several fronts, and before new batches of conscripts are trained for service.

Already, 5,000 conscripts have been added to the military’s ranks and 10,000 more are expected before the end of the year. Thet Swe said they would not be sent into combat, but instead be used as sentries and other such duties, which would then free up better trained solders for the front lines.

“If the conscription carries forward and the military can halt these offenses and make it through to the end of the year, the next year there could be a counter-offensive,” Michaels said. “So this is the closing window to get this done.”

Likewise with the MNDAA, it is not clear whether it is planning to join the broader offensive or whether it intends to take encircled Lashio by force, lay siege to it, or simply tie up the troops now trapped there. The group did not respond to requests for comment.

“If you compare it to 1027 the first time, it’s not the same rapid collapse of the military,” Michaels said.

“The military is still taking losses but it’s just not the same kind of scale or pace. But if the MNDAA completely joins, then we’re looking at a different situation.”

Police Raid Uncovers Illegal Lions and Luxury Cars in Pattaya Villa

PATTAYA — Police search luxury home of Chinese couple in Pattaya, find 2 lions without possession permits

A luxury house in Soi Khao Talo, Moo 10, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province, was reported for allegedly keeping wild animals. Police obtained a search warrant to investigate and found two lions.

On July 5, Pol. Maj. Gen. Theerachai Chamnanmor, Commander of the Provincial Police Region 2 Investigation Division, along with investigation officers, executed a search warrant issued by Pattaya Provincial Court on July 4. They searched a house suspected of containing illegally obtained assets.

This luxurious two-story house is built on over half an acre of land. Officers found two Chinese homeowners, a married couple, and three Thai individuals – two men and one woman. The search uncovered two luxury cars: a red Ferrari without license plates and a white Rolls-Royce with red plates registered in Bangkok. Additionally, two male lions were found in cages next to the house.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Theerachai stated that the two male lions found are controlled wildlife, requiring possession permits, which the homeowners did not have. As for the luxury cars, only import invoices were present, so they were seized for further investigation regarding tax payment and proper importation.

“Initially, officers have issued a document prohibiting the relocation of the lions and seized both cars for inspection,” he said.

National Park Department officials preliminarily disclosed that since the homeowners couldn’t produce possession permits, further investigation is needed to determine how they obtained the two lions and whether it was legal.

Previously, there have been several cases of people possessing lions without permits. Most owners were wealthy, and many cases involved foreigners. Notably, in Pattaya, there was a case of a female lion cub riding in a Bentley limousine down a busy street, driven by a Sri Lankan man and owned by Miss Pupe, a Thai woman from Ratchaburi Province.

Another case involved two male and female lions appearing in a video briefly coming out of a residence in Huai Yai District, Chonburi Province. In both cases, the lion cubs came from a farm in Nakhon Pathom Province.

Former K-Pop Star’s Ex-Fiancée Sought by Thai Authorities on Interpol Warrant

Interpol warrant
Hwang Hana

BANGKOK — Thai Immigration authorities are searching for Hwang Hana, a Korean socialite and former fiancée of famous singer Park Yoochun, who is on the run from an Interpol warrant.

The International Criminal Police Organization or Interpol has issued an arrest warrant for Hwang Hana, the former fiancée of famous singer Park Yoochun, after she fled to Thailand. The head of the Thai Immigration Department has ordered a manhunt for her.

On July 4, it was reported in the news that Pol. Lt. Gen. Itthipol Itthisarnronnachai, Commissioner of Immigration, ordered the investigation team to go to the scene to collect clues and speed up the search for Hwang Hana. Interpol had issued the arrest warrant after her involvement in a drug case.

The investigation team found that Hwang Hana entered Thailand on March 13, 2024, on Vietnam Airlines flight VN 629 from Da Nang, Vietnam, to Don Mueang Airport.

Upon arrival, Hwang Hana reported her passport lost or stolen and personally applied for a new passport at the South Korean Embassy in Thailand, which was registered in the immigration system on April 3, 2024.

Interpol warrant
Hwang Hana was arrested in South Korea by the Drug Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency on April 4, 2019.

According to the officials’ investigation, it is believed that Hwang Hana is still hiding in Thailand as there is no record of her leaving the country. It is suspected that she has overstayed her authorized period of stay in the Kingdom.

If she is found, she will be arrested and prosecuted under Thai law. The authorities will also coordinate with the South Korean Embassy in Thailand to inform them of her arrest and arrange for her extradition to South Korea in accordance with the required procedures.

Hwang Ha Na is the only granddaughter of the founder of Namyang Dairy Products, a large Korean conglomerate. She was arrested in South Korea by the Drug Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency on April 4, 2019, following suspicions of using and distributing drugs in 2018.

Interpol warrant
Pencil drawing published on a webtoon that Hwang Hana launched together with her father.

In an exclusive report by SBS, sources have revealed more details on Hwang Hana’s suspected usage of Philopon, also known as methamphetamine, from 2015. She reportedly then stopped using it for 3 years, until late 2018.

Park Yoochun was also under suspicion of purchasing 1.5 grams of Philopon with Hwang, who was his girlfriend at the time, on three occasions between February and March 2019, and of injecting the drug five times. He had previously stated at a press conference that he had never used drugs.

She was charged in 2020 with violating the Narcotics Control Act under suspicions of taking 0.5 grams of Philopon with a college student in the Gangnam district. She served her sentence of 1 year and 8 months in prison and was released after completing her sentence in 2022 with two years of probation.

Hwang was also allegedly linked to one of South Korea’s most notorious scandals, the Burning Sun case. This high-profile incident involved allegations of prostitution, human trafficking, and bribery, implicating numerous South Korean celebrities and public officials. The case sent shockwaves through South Korean society and entertainment industry when it came to light in 2019.

BYD CEO Meets Thai PM: Promises to Address Price Cut Controversy

BYD
Mr. Wang Chuanfu, CEO of BYD Company Limited, meets with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin at the Government House on July 5, 2024.

BANGKOK  — One day after Chinese automaker BYD inaugurated its first electric vehicle plant in Thailand at WHA Industrial Estate in Rayong Province, Mr. Wang Chuanfu, CEO of BYD Company Limited, met with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin at the Government House on July 5. One of the key discussion points was the hot issue of car price adjustments.

Previously, a drama that became the talk of the town arose when BYD distributors announced a promotion for the BYD DOLPHIN electric vehicle model on June 19, offering discounts of up to 140,000-160,000 baht.

This affected buyers who had purchased the model earlier, as those who bought on April 30 were persuaded that it was the last day of a discount campaign and received only a 40,090 baht discount. Now, the price has dropped by more than 100,000 baht, along with special freebies.

BYD campaign
BYD car distributor’s price reduction campaign posters that created a buzz and became a controversial issue

On July 1, the car distributor announced another price reduction for the New BYD ATTO 3 electric vehicle group, including four models, citing the celebration of BYD’s first car manufacturing plant opening in Thailand. The total discount reached up to 340,000 baht, causing dissatisfaction among consumers who had purchased these electric vehicles earlier.

They gathered to file a complaint with the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB).
Subsequently, on July 3, Ms. Jiraporn Sinthuprai, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, ordered the OCPB to investigate this BYD campaign.

During Friday’s discussion, the Prime Minister told the BYD CEO that managing consumer expectations regarding pricing is crucial and asked him to consider appropriate consumer protection for Thai customers.

BYD PM2
Mr. Wang Chuanfu, CEO of BYD Company Limited, and his delegation in discussions with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin at the Government House on July 5ม 2024.

Mr. Wang expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s valuable advice and promised to consider the PM’s suggestions. This includes adjusting future pricing in an appropriate manner and frequency to allow the market to adapt, as well as pledging to find measures to compensate affected customers.

Mr. Wang emphasized that BYD values the Thai market, which has high potential. The company uses more of Thailand’s supply chain than required and produces several components in Thailand, bringing new technology production to the country.

The Prime Minister thanked BYD for recognizing Thailand’s potential and choosing to invest in the country, which will stimulate the Thai economy. He requested the company to consider capable Thai manufacturers and entrepreneurs, use the Thai supply chain as much as possible, and produce at full capacity as agreed.

The production capacity of BYD’s plant in Thailand is 150,000 vehicles per year, and it will take two years to reach full capacity. Besides selling in Thailand, the company plans to export to other ASEAN countries, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

UK Labour Party Sweeps to Power in Historic Election Win

UK Labour Party sweeps to power in historic election win. But impatient voters mean big challenges

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s Labour Party swept to power Friday after more than a decade in opposition, official results showed, as a jaded electorate appeared to hand the party a landslide victory but also a mammoth task of reinvigorating a stagnant economy and dispirited nation.

Labour leader Keir Starmer will officially become prime minister later in the day, leading his party back to government less than five years after it suffered its worst defeat in almost a century. In the brutal choreography of British politics, he will take charge in 10 Downing St. hours after the votes are counted – as Conservative leader Rishi Sunak is hustled out.

“A mandate like this comes with a great responsibility,” Starmer acknowledged in a speech to supporters, saying that the fight to regain people’s trust “is the battle that defines our age.”

Speaking as drawn broke in London, he said Labour would offer “the sunlight of hope, pale at first but getting stronger though the day.”

Sunak conceded defeat, saying the voters had delivered a “sobering verdict.”

Labour’s triumph and challenges

For Starmer, it’s a massive triumph that will bring huge challenges, as he faces a jaded electorate impatient for change against a gloomy backdrop of economic malaise, mounting distrust in institutions and a fraying social fabric.

“Nothing has gone well in the last 14 years,” said London voter James Erskine, who was optimistic for change in the hours before polls closed. “I just see this as the potential for a seismic shift, and that’s what I’m hoping for.”

Anand Menon, professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at King’s College London, said British voters were about to see a marked change in political atmosphere from the tumultuous “politics as pantomime” of the last few years.

“I think we’re going to have to get used again to relatively stable government, with ministers staying in power for quite a long time, and with government being able to think beyond the very short term to medium-term objectives,” he said.

Britain has experienced a run of turbulent years — some of it of the Conservatives’ own making and some of it not — that has left many voters pessimistic about their country’s future. The U.K.’s exit from the European Union followed by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine battered the economy, while lockdown-breaching parties held by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his staff caused widespread anger.

Johnson’s successor, Liz Truss, rocked the economy further with a package of drastic tax cuts and lasted just 49 days in office. Rising poverty and cuts to state services have led to gripes about “Broken Britain.”

While the result appears to buck recent rightward electoral shifts in Europe, including in France and Italy, many of those same populist undercurrents flow in Britain. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has roiled the race with his party’s anti-immigrant “take our country back” sentiment and undercut support for the Conservatives, who already faced dismal prospects.

The exit poll suggested Labour was on course to win about 410 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons and the Conservatives 131.

With a majority of results in, the broad picture of a Labour landslide was borne out, though estimates of the final tally varied. The BBC projected that Labour would end up with 410 seats and the Conservatives with 144.

Conservative vote collapses as smaller parties surge

Even that higher tally for the Tories would leave the party with the fewest seats in its nearly two-century history and cause disarray.

The result is a catastrophe for the Conservatives as voters punished them for 14 years of presiding over austerity, Brexit, a pandemic, political scandals and internecine Tory conflict. The historic defeat leaves the party depleted and in disarray and will likely spark an immediate contest to replace Sunak as leader.

AP24187149296726

In a sign of the volatile public mood and anger at the system, some smaller parties picked up millions of votes, including the centrist Liberal Democrats and Farage’s Reform UK. Farage won his race in the seaside town of Clacton-on-Sea, securing a seat in Parliament on his eighth attempt, and Reform has won four seats so far.

The Liberal Democrats won many more than that on a slightly lower share of the vote because its votes were more efficiently distributed. In Britain’s first-past-the-post system, the candidate with the most votes in each constituency wins.

Labour was cautious but reliable

Hundreds of seats changed hands in tight contests in which traditional party loyalties come second to more immediate concerns about the economycrumbling infrastructure and the National Health Service.

Labour did not set pulses racing with its pledges to get the sluggish economy growing, invest in infrastructure and make Britain a “clean energy superpower.”

But the party’s cautious, safety-first campaign delivered the desired result. The party won the support of large chunks of the business community and endorsements from traditionally conservative newspapers, including the Rupert Murdoch-owned Sun tabloid, which praised Starmer for “dragging his party back to the center ground of British politics.”

Conservative missteps

The Conservative campaign, meanwhile, was plagued by gaffes. The campaign got off to an inauspicious start when rain drenched Sunak as he made the announcement outside 10 Downing St. Then, Sunak went home early from commemorations in France marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.

Several Conservatives close to Sunak are being investigated over suspicions they used inside information to place bets on the date of the election before it was announced.

Sunak has struggled to shake off the taint of political chaos and mismanagement that’s gathered around the Conservatives.

In Henley-on-Thames, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of London, voters like Patricia Mulcahy, who is retired, sensed the nation was looking for something different. The community, which normally votes Conservative, may change its stripes this time.

“The younger generation are far more interested in change,’’ Mulcahy said. “But whoever gets in, they’ve got a heck of a job ahead of them. It’s not going to be easy.”

Schools across the country, including government schools, private institutions, language centres, and universities, are constantly seeking qualified English teachers to improve their students’ language proficiency.

Qualifications and Requirements

To teach English in Thailand, certain qualifications and requirements must be met. Generally, a bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement for most teaching positions, serving as a benchmark for academic and professional preparedness. Additionally, a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification is highly recommended and, in some cases, required, as it provides specific training for teaching English to non-native speakers.

Prospective teachers should also be aware of the visa and work permit regulations set by the Thai government, which are essential for legal employment. Proficiency in English, cultural adaptability, and a genuine interest in contributing to the educational growth of Thai students are also key components that schools look for in candidates.

The Job Search Strategy

Finding English teaching jobs in Thailand involves a strategic approach that combines understanding the local job market with leveraging online resources. Here’s how aspiring English teachers can conduct an effective job search, tapping into both global platforms and localised opportunities to uncover the best teaching positions.

Leveraging Online Platforms and Agencies

Online Job Boards

Online job boards like Teast, which feature the latest teaching jobs in Thailand, are a valuable resource for teachers. These platforms list a wide variety of job opportunities, encompassing everything from positions in government schools to roles within private language institutes. By regularly visiting online job boards, you can gain a comprehensive overview of the available teaching opportunities, enabling you to find positions that align with your specific qualifications and preferences.

Additionally, job boards often feature tools like resume builders and the ability to apply directly through the website, simplifying the application process. Many job boards also allow you to set up alerts for new job postings that match your preferences, ensuring you don’t miss out on any opportunities.

Recruitment Agencies

Utilising teacher recruitment agencies that focus on placing teachers in schools across Thailand can be instrumental in your job search. These agencies often have partnerships with schools looking for qualified English teachers and can help navigate the application and hiring process. They also provide support in understanding the legal and visa aspects of working in Thailand, making the transition smoother for first-time teachers abroad.

Furthermore, these agencies typically offer personalised service, working with you to understand your career goals and preferences, which helps them match you with job openings that best suit your needs. This can significantly reduce the time and effort required to find a suitable position, as the agency handles much of the legwork for you.

TEFL Course Providers

Considering a TEFL course is a significant step toward a rewarding teaching career. It’s essential to explore the network and resources available through various certification programs. Many TEFL certification course providers in Thailand offer job guarantees or have strong connections with schools and recruitment agencies. The alumni networks from these courses can also be a valuable source of advice and job leads.

Leveraging these networks can be highly beneficial, as they often provide access to unadvertised vacancies and schools that have a high demand for teachers but a low online profile. Additionally, being part of a TEFL network allows you to connect with fellow teachers who can share practical advice on living and working in Thailand, making your transition smoother and more enjoyable.

Social Media and Forums

Engaging with communities on social media platforms and forums such as Facebook groups dedicated to teaching in Thailand can provide insights and opportunities not listed on traditional job boards. These communities often share job openings, advice on schools, and firsthand experiences that can guide your job search.

Participating in these online communities not only helps you stay informed about the teaching market in Thailand but also allows you to ask questions and receive feedback from experienced teachers. This can be invaluable in avoiding common pitfalls and ensuring that your job search and subsequent employment are as rewarding as possible.

Navigating Local Opportunities

When exploring teaching opportunities in Thailand, tapping into local resources can greatly enhance your job search. An effective strategy is to compile a directory of schools and directly inquire about vacancies. While this method requires diligence, it demonstrates your initiative and keen interest to potential employers, often uncovering positions that aren’t advertised online. Additionally, establishing local connections can be invaluable.

Engaging in networking activities, such as attending educational fairs, local meetups, or TEFL gatherings, provides a platform to meet fellow educators and school administrators. These contacts can lead to information about open teaching positions or schools seeking English teachers. Volunteering as a teacher, although unpaid, offers precious experience and can open doors to future paid roles. It’s a chance to integrate into the community, understand the educational landscape, and possibly learn of job opportunities through the network you build.

Preparing Your Application

A compelling application is your first step toward securing an English teaching position. Here’s how to make yours stand out:

Tailor Your Resume

Highlight any teaching experience, certification (like TEFL/TESOL), and skills relevant to the classroom. Emphasise your adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and any experience you have living or working abroad. It’s also beneficial to include any language skills, especially if you speak a bit of Thai, as this shows your commitment to integrating into the local culture. Mentioning your ability to use educational technology and online teaching platforms can further demonstrate your readiness for modern classrooms.

Craft a Personalised Cover Letter

Address the specific needs and goals of the school to which you’re applying. Share why you’re passionate about teaching in Thailand and how you can contribute to their educational objectives. Research the school’s mission and any programs they are particularly proud of to reference in your letter. This not only shows your interest in the position but also that you’ve taken the time to understand what makes the school unique.

Create an Introduction Video

In today’s digital age, an introduction video can set you apart. This video should be a brief overview of your qualifications, teaching philosophy, and why you’re interested in teaching in Thailand. Keep it professional yet engaging, aiming for 1-2 minutes. This is your chance to make a personal connection with potential employers, showcasing your communication skills and enthusiasm for teaching. To make your video more compelling, ensure good lighting, clear audio, and a tidy, neutral background. Dress as you would for an in-person interview to convey professionalism.

Prepare for Interviews

Familiarise yourself with common interview questions for English teachers in Thailand. Be ready to discuss your teaching philosophy, classroom management strategies, and how you plan to engage Thai students. Additionally, consider preparing a short demo lesson or outlining a lesson plan, as some interviews may require you to demonstrate your teaching approach. Reflecting on your past teaching experiences, including challenges you faced and how you overcame them, can also provide valuable insights for your interviewers about your problem-solving skills and dedication to teaching.

Understanding Contracts and Negotiations

Understanding the terms of your contract thoroughly before committing to a teaching position in Thailand is paramount. Ensure the contract specifies your salary, work hours, responsibilities, and any benefits, such as housing allowances or health insurance. Be vigilant about clauses related to contract termination and any penalties. If certain aspects of the offer don’t meet your expectations, remember that negotiation is always an option, whether concerning salary, class size, or other responsibilities. If you’re ever in doubt about the terms of a contract, don’t hesitate to seek advice from experienced teachers within your network. Their insights on standard practices and expectations in Thailand can guide you in making informed decisions and setting realistic negotiations for your contract.

Securing an English Teaching Job in Thailand

Finding an English teaching job in Thailand can be a rewarding and exciting journey. The demand for English teachers is high, offering numerous opportunities for those looking to live and work in this vibrant country. By obtaining the necessary qualifications, such as a TEFL certification, and leveraging job boards, recruitment agencies, and TEFL course networks, you can increase your chances of securing a teaching position.

Additionally, understanding the local culture and building connections within the community can greatly enhance your teaching experience. Whether you are drawn to the bustling cities or the serene countryside, Thailand offers a unique and enriching environment for English teachers.

With proper preparation and a proactive approach, you can successfully navigate the job market and find a fulfilling teaching job in Thailand. Embrace the adventure, and enjoy the journey of making a positive impact on your students’ lives while experiencing the rich culture and beauty of Thailand.

PATTAYA  — Thai Officials have concluded that the cause of an Indian tourist fainting after participating in a Sea Walker coral viewing on July 1 was due to a pre-existing medical condition. Fortunately, the crew on the boat was able to perform CPR and save him.

On July 4, Wuttipong Wong-in, Director of Marine and Coastal Resources Conservation Section 2, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, inspected the boat “Tong Samut 8” that took tourists for Sea Walker coral viewing near the Marine Hazard Prevention Center at Bali Hai Pier, Pattaya.

Chuchai Ponsida, 37, the boat owner’s assistant, recounted that on the day of the incident, around noon, a group of about 20 Indian tourists came as a family group. Of these, 7-8 people volunteered to dive and view the coral.

Everyone passed initial screening for age and pre-existing conditions. They were questioned thoroughly before diving. All participants dove normally, accompanied by underwater guards who regularly checked on everyone’s condition.

While walking underwater to view the coral, everyone seemed fine, with no signs of distress. This was evident from the underwater camera footage provided by the boat service, which showed the Indian tourist who later fainted still behaving normally and waving at the camera.

After the dive, which lasted no more than 15 minutes per person, the Indian man sat down to rest and drink water while waiting for his family. Suddenly, he leaned over and collapsed on the floor.

Wuttipong continued that at this point, the crew immediately checked his pulse and performed CPR. The man’s son, who had just come up from the water, was shocked and asked to perform CPR on his father. The son pressed on his father’s chest so hard, causing blood to come out of the father’s mouth. They quickly took the boat to Koh Larn Hospital before transferring the patient to a hospital in Pattaya city.

Sorawat Pinchusri, 54, the boat owner, explained that he has been operating the Sea Walker business for over 20 years and has never experienced such an incident. His crew members took full care of the Indian man, who is now safe and conscious. The medical team attributed the cause to his pre-existing medical condition.

“Our boat already has strict measures for screening, including age, time, and pre-existing conditions. We don’t allow people with medical conditions to go underwater due to the higher pressure. However, this tourist didn’t disclose his condition, probably wanting to enjoy the underwater experience with his family,” he said.
