Thailand Welcomes Home Trafficked 1,000-Year-Old Statues Returned by New York’s Metropolitan Museum

The objects — a tall bronze figure called the Standing Shiva or Golden Boy and a smaller sculpture called Kneeling Female — are thought to be around 1,000 years old.

This most recent repatriation of artwork comes as many museums in the U.S. and Europe reckon with collections that contain objects looted from Asia, Africa and other places during centuries of colonialism or in times of upheaval.

The Metropolitan Museum had announced last December that it would return more than a dozen artifacts to Thailand and Cambodia after they were linked to the late Douglas Latchford, an art dealer and collector accused of running a huge antiquities trafficking network out of Southeast Asia.

He was indicted in the United States in 2019 for allegedly orchestrating a long-running scheme to sell looted Cambodian antiquities on the international art market. Latchford, who died the following year, had denied any involvement in smuggling.

Speaking at Tuesday’s ceremony, the Metropolitan’s curator of Asian and Southeast Asian art, John Guy, called the returned works “unrivalled masterpieces“ of their period and said the handover was “a very meaningful moment to recognize the importance of the art of Thailand in world culture.”

“The Met initiated the return of these two objects after reviewing information and established that the works rightly belonged to the Kingdom of Thailand,” he said.

“This return followed the launch of the Metropolitan’s Cultural Property Initiative last year, an initiative driven by the Met’s commitment to the responsible collecting of antiquities and to the shared stewardship of the world’s cultural heritage,” Guy told his audience in Bangkok.

Thai Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol expressed her country’s gratitude for the return of the items.

“These artifacts that Thailand has received from the Met are the national assets of all Thais,” she said.

Last month, the Metropolitan Museum signed a memorandum of understanding in New York with Thailand “formalizing a shared commitment to collaborate on exchanges of art, expertise, and the display and study of Thai art.”

The statement also explained that the museum had recently tackled the controversial issue of cultural property and how it was obtained.

It said its measures include “a focused review of works in the collection; hiring provenance researchers to join the many researchers and curators already doing this work at the Museum; further engaging staff and trustees; and using The Met’s platform to support and contribute to public discourse on this topic.”

Most of Passengers From Battered Singapore Airlines Jetliner Arrive in Singapore From Bangkok

NAPAT KONGSAWAD, BANGKOK (AP) — Singapore Airlines said a relief plane flew into Singapore early Wednesday morning with most of the passengers who were on a flight that was battered by severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean and had to make an emergency landing in Bangkok after one man died and dozens of people were injured.

The airline said 143 passengers arrived in the city state shortly after 5 a.m.

The airline’s CEO, Goh Choon Phong, said an additional 79 passengers and six crew members remained in Bangkok, including the 71 hospitalized as of Wednesday morning. The airline told The Associated Press that a second relief flight was planned.

The airline’s Flight SQ321 was flying from London’s Heathrow airport to Singapore, with 211 passengers and 18 crew members aboard, when it hit the turbulence Tuesday, bashing people around inside the plane. The Boeing 777 descended 6,000 feet (around 1,800 meters) in about three minutes, the carrier said Tuesday.

“We are very sorry for the traumatic experience that everyone on board SQ321 went through,” Goh said in a video on social media. He said the airline was providing all necessary support and pledged it would fully cooperate in investigations.

An airport official said the 73-year-old British man who died might have had a heart attack, though that hadn’t been confirmed.

Thai officials withheld the man’s name, but British media identified him as Geoff Kitchen, who was going on a holiday with his wife. She was among the passengers taken to hospital in Bangkok

Kitchen was described as formerly working in the insurance industry, and in retirement continuing his involvement with amateur theater.

The Thornbury Musical Theatre Group, with which he worked, said he was “always a gentleman with the utmost honesty and integrity and always did what was right for the group.”

Passengers who arrived at Singapore’s Changi Airport on Wednesday were greeted by Goh and their family members, some with tears of joy and relief. They were escorted out and didn’t talk to the media.

Officials from the British and Malaysian embassies in Bangkok visited Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital on Wednesday to check on the injured. British officials were taken to the ninth floor, which hosts the hospital’s intensive care unit along with pediatric surgery and bone marrow transplant wards. Hospital officials said 61 of the injured were being treated there and 10 had been transferred to other hospitals in its network.

British passenger Andrew Davies told Sky News that the seatbelt sign was illuminated but crew members didn’t have time to take their seats.

“Every single cabin crew person I saw was injured in some way or another, maybe with a gash on their head,” Davies said. “One had a bad back, who was in obvious pain.”

Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old student on the flight, told ABC News: “Some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it. They hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it.”

Kittipong Kittikachorn, general manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, said the sudden descent occurred as passengers were being served food. He said at least seven passengers were severely injured. The British man appeared to have had a heart attack but medical authorities would need to confirm that, he said.

Tracking data captured by FlightRadar24 and analyzed by The Associated Press show the Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet (11,300 meters).

At one point, the Boeing 777-300ER suddenly and sharply descended to 31,000 feet (9,400 meters) over about three minutes, according to the data. The aircraft then stayed at 31,000 feet (9,400 meters) for under 10 minutes before diverting and landing in Bangkok less than a half-hour later.

Most people associate turbulence with heavy storms, but the most dangerous type is so-called clear air turbulence. Wind shear can occur in wispy cirrus clouds or even in clear air near thunderstorms, as differences in temperature and pressure create powerful currents of fast-moving air.

According to a 2021 report by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, turbulence accounted for 37.6% of all accidents on larger commercial airlines between 2009 and 2018. The Federal Aviation Administration, another U.S. government agency, has said there were 146 serious injuries from turbulence from 2009 to 2021.

Boeing extended condolences to the family of the dead man and said it was in contact with Singapore Airlines “and stand ready to support them.”

The wide-body Boeing 777 is a workhorse of the aviation industry, used mainly for long-haul flights by airlines around the world. The 777-300ER variant of the twin-engine, two-aisle plane is larger and can carry more passengers than earlier models.

Singapore Airlines, the city-state’s flag carrier, operates 22 of the aircraft as part of its fleet of more than 140 planes. The airline’s parent company is majority owned by Singapore’s Temasek government investment conglomerate and also operates the budget airline Scoot.

Singapore Airlines said the nationalities of the passengers were 56 Australians, two Canadians, one German, three Indians, two Indonesians, one Icelander, four Irish, one Israeli, 16 Malaysians, two from Myanmar, 23 New Zealanders, five Filipinos, 41 from Singapore, one South Korean, two Spaniards, 47 from the United Kingdom and four from the United States.

Representatives were from various embassies, international organizations, and government agencies, including the Australian Embassy, the British Embassy, the EU, the Chinese Embassy, the Japanese Embassy, the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT), the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO Bangkok), the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KORTA Bangkok), the European Association for Business and Commerce (EABC), the Office of the Board of Investment, and the Department of Trade Negotiations.

The Department of Business Development of Commerce Ministry held a meeting about Thailand’s Foreign Business Act on May 20, 2024.

This meeting aims to facilitate investors and entrepreneurs and ensure they understand the business operations under the law, which mandates foreign shareholders to hold no more than 49 percent of shares. However, export-oriented manufacturing businesses are exempt from this law and fall under the jurisdiction of agencies like the Board of Investment (BOI).

Ms. Oramon Sapthaweetham, Director-General of the Department of Business Development, disclosed that on May 20, 2024, the department invited representatives from foreign embassies and trade associations in Thailand to explain the Foreign Business Act 1999 (B.E. 2542) to help foreign investors understand this law and invest in Thailand legally without any violations.

The department has developed an online registration system for companies and legal entities, expected to launch in July 2024. This service called ‘e-Foreign Business’, which is a system for foreign investors to apply for business licenses under the Foreign Business Act, to reduce the volume of documents and shorten the processing time.

It will provide a full range of electronic services, including submitting applications for foreign business licenses/certificates through online channels, electronic payment (e-Payment), electronic receipts (e-Receipt), electronic signatures (Digital Signature), and issuing electronic licenses/certificates (e-Foreign Business License/e-Foreign Certificate).

“The department is also implementing the Ministry of Commerce’s policy to reform laws, especially foreign-related laws, which are crucial and require continuous review under Annex 3 of the Foreign Business Act. The various representatives showed interest, and the overall reception did not indicate any need for modifications. This was the first time the department organized such a hearing,” she said.

The plan is to remove 10 service businesses from Annex 3 (21). These include telecommunications service businesses, such as those requiring a Type One Telecommunication Business License under the law on telecommunications business, treasury center businesses under the law on exchange control, which are businesses related to foreign currency management for companies in the affiliated group, and software development service businesses by juristic persons registered in Thailand.

After seeking feedback from stakeholders, Phumtham Wechayachai, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, is expected to give his approval within 1 to 2 months. If the proposal is approved, it will be submitted to the Cabinet for further consideration.

A British Passenger Dies, 30 Injured as Singapore Airlines Flight Hits Severe Turbulence

SUVARNABHUMI – A British man, 73, has died aboard after Singapore Airlines flight SQ 321 from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence. The plane was diverted to Bangkok and made an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi airport, where emergency crews rushed to help injured passengers amid stormy weather.

The Boeing 777-300ER, with a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board, landed in Bangkok at 3:45 p.m. (0845 GMT), the airline said in a Facebook post.

“Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” the airline said. “We are working with the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance, and sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed.”

Despite initial reports of two passenger fatalities in Thai media, Mr. Kittipong Kittikachorn, the director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, later clarified that there was only one confirmed death, a 73-year-old British man. The preliminary cause of death is believed to be heart disease, but doctors are still investigating the exact cause.

Regarding the number of injured passengers, there are 30 in total. Of these, 16 were taken to the hospital, with 7 in critical condition, mostly due to head injuries and pain in the arms and muscles. The remaining 14 passengers with minor injuries are currently at the passenger waiting area.

SQ312 3
Screenshots from video clips filmed inside the aircraft revealed the extent of the damage caused by the severe turbulence, with objects scattered throughout the passenger cabin.

Mr. Kittipong further stated that based on the inspection of the aircraft, it is still capable of flying. However, the interior of the plane is in a state of disarray, likely due to experiencing severe turbulence at a considerable altitude. At the time of the incident, it is believed that the passengers were in the middle of a meal service and were expected to arrive in Singapore within 2-3 hours. From conversations with the passengers, almost everyone was wearing their seat belts. It is not yet known whether the deceased passenger was wearing a seat belt or not, as his wife was injured and has been sent to the hospital.

There are also video clips from inside the aircraft revealed the extent of the damage, with objects scattered throughout the passenger cabin, air ducts torn and hanging from the ceiling, and numerous passenger oxygen masks that have fallen from their compartments.

The Associated Press reported that crews from Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from Suvarnabhumi Airport, were on site to transfer injured passengers from Flight SQ321 from Heathrow off the runway for treatment. Videos posted on the LINE messaging platform by Suvarnabhumi Airport showed a line of ambulances streaming to the scene.

Tracking data captured by FlightRadar24 and analyzed by The Associated Press showed the Singapore Airlines flight cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet. Just after 0800 GMT, the Boeing 777 suddenly and sharply pitched down to 31,000 feet over the span of some three minutes, the data shows.

SQ312 1

The aircraft stayed at 31,000 feet for just under 10 minutes before rapidly descending and landing in Bangkok in just under half an hour.

Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Thailand Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, stated that he had instructed the Airports of Thailand (AOT) to fully assist and facilitate the passengers and crew of the airline. AOT officials, in collaboration with Singapore Airlines, are providing care and assistance to the passengers as they await their onward journey to Singapore. It is expected that an aircraft from Changi Airport will arrive in Thailand at approximately 9:45 p.m.

He also urged all aviation agencies, including all airlines, to emphasize the utmost safety, as the weather conditions during this period are volatile, with heavy rainfall in some areas.

Marriott International Launches JW Garden in Khao Lak to Promote Sustainability

MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL CONTINUES TO SOW THE SEEDS OF SUSTAINABILITY IN SOUTHERN THAILAND WITH LAUNCH OF JW GARDEN IN KHAO LAK

Marriott International committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050.

Bangkok, Thailand: 10 May 2024 – Marriott International continues to sow the seeds of sustainability with a series of important initiatives that seek to bring lasting benefits to the group’s destinations and communities. Supported by the Marriott Thailand Business Council and guided by Marriott International’s global sustainability and social impact platform Serve 360, the initiatives reflect Marriott’s commitment to creating a positive impact wherever it does business – including on the pure shores of Southern Thailand.

Sustainability is woven into Marriott’s operations. By tracking and managing its waste, water and energy consumption, the group is pursuing its 2025 Sustainability Goals to reduce food waste by 50%, water intensity by 15%, and carbon intensity by 30%. Ultimately, the company is striving to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“Marriott’s hotels and resorts in Southern Thailand have been working to help the group to achieve our global targets, with a wide range of projects having been initiated by the Marriott Thailand Business Council. Food waste is a key issue and 66 hotels across Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines are currently collaborating with charitable organization Scholars of Sustenance Foundation (SOS) to donate thousands of meals to disadvantaged communities.” said Mr. Brad Edman, Multi-Property Vice President – Southern Thailand and General Manager at Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa.

In 2023, 10 resorts in Southern Thailand donated more than 1,000kg of surplus food to SOS, which provide 4,200 meals to disadvantaged local communities. Other excess food is repurposed into pickles, jams and other homemade products, or converted into organic compost to fertilize the resorts’ gardens. Cage-free eggs, crate-free pork and sustainable seafood are also used as part of a responsible sourcing strategy which helps generate community benefits and reduce transport emissions.

Marriott is also striving to significantly reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. By the end of 2023, two-thirds of the group’s properties in Thailand had removed single-use plastic water bottles from their guest rooms and replaced them with alternatives such as reusable glass bottles, onsite water bottling plants and in-room filters for drinking water. In terms of renewable energy, Marriott is in the process of rolling out 165 EV charging stations across Thailand by 2025.

The newly-launched JW Garden in Khao Lak: A groundbreaking venture redefining sustainability, wellness, and immersive nature experiences at JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa.

At JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa and JW Marriott Khao Lak Suites, the newly-launched JW Garden is a haven of tranquility and sustainability. This full farm and wilderness space allows visitors to escape, unwind and be inspired by nature with organic gardens, interactive experiences with farm animals, outdoor yoga sessions, conservation classes, bird-watching, picnics and more. At the Environment School, guests receive invaluable knowledge with the resort’s resident environmentalist through engaging sessions and participation in the Nipa Palm Mangrove Reforestation Project, empowering them to become tomorrow’s change-makers, committed to preserving the natural world for future generations.

“We are delighted to introduce our JW Garden, a lush oasis where sustainability thrives. As an increasing number of guests seek meaningful vacations, this eco haven will allow them to interact with nature and learn about how our resort is helping to create a better tomorrow for local communities and international visitors alike. Following the launch of our Bamboo Shark Nursery in July last year, this is the latest example of how we are striving to ‘do good in every direction’,” said Mr. Abhimanyu Singh, General Manager of JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa and JW Marriott Khao Lak Suites.
