Mayon Volcano unrest forces mass evacuations in Albay, Phillippines

ALBAY, PHILIPPINES — 3 May 2026, Thousands evacuated after Mayon Volcano erupts, authorities warn of lava and landslides

Thousands of residents in Albay province, southeast of Manila, have been evacuated after renewed activity at Mayon Volcano sent ash plumes into the sky and blanketed nearby communities.

Authorities have raised Alert Level 3 on a five-level scale and warned residents to remain outside a 6 km danger zone due to the risk of lava flows, landslides, and further eruptions.

The volcano, known for its near-perfect cone shape and standing about 2,462 metres tall, is experiencing strombolian eruptions — moderate bursts that eject lava, gas, and volcanic debris intermittently.

More than 5,000 people are now staying in evacuation centres, as heavy ashfall disrupts transport and reduces visibility across affected areas.

Officials said the volcano is exhibiting strombolian activity, with intermittent bursts of lava, gas, and volcanic debris. Mayon, one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, has been showing heightened unrest since earlier this year.

Mayon is one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes and a major tourist attraction, but authorities warn the situation remains volatile.

Karen army claim killing of 60 Myanmar troops

MAE HONG SON — 3 May 2026, The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) has claimed it killed more than 60 Myanmar junta troops since April, as fighting intensifies near the Thai-Myanmar border, according to a statement by the Karen National Union (KNU).

The KNU said its forces had killed over 60 government soldiers since early April. In the past week alone, it reported 26 killed and 35 wounded, with several troops captured during clashes in Hpapun township in Karen state, opposite Mae Sariang district in Thailand’s Mae Hong Son province.

The statement added that between 15 and 22 March, there were nine clashes between junta forces and the KNLA’s Brigade 5.

Residents in Mae Sam Laep village in Sop Moei district said they heard explosions and gunfire from across the border in Myanmar late on 3 May, suggesting fresh clashes. The fighting is believed to involve KNLA forces and Myanmar troops, who may have been deployed as reinforcements but were ambushed, according to local reports.

Two-seat helicopter crashes near factory in Samut Prakan, two injured

SAMUT PRAKAN — 3 May 2026, 09:10, Emergency responders were dispatched after a two-seat training helicopter crashed in a wooded area near Soi Bang Mek Khao, Suwit Sai Kao Road, Thai Ban subdistrict, Mueang district.

Initial reports to the Prakan rescue centre described an aircraft down near the end of the soi, beside a factory compound. Firefighters, rescue teams and officers from Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station reached the site, which was located in dense brush. Crews had to run hoses through the undergrowth to extinguish flames around the aircraft’s engine. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes, and the area was cordoned off for further investigation.

The aircraft was identified as a Guimbal Cabri G2, a light two-seat helicopter. Early checks indicated the pilot and a passenger, reported to be a mechanic, sustained only minor injuries.

Local residents said no one witnessed the moment of impact, learning of the incident only after the crash. The helicopter is believed to be privately owned, with a landing area behind a nearby factory adjacent to the crash site. Police are inspecting the premises as part of the inquiry; media access has not been granted, and no official statement has yet been issued by the operator.

Pol. Capt. Jakkrit Srirotchanakul, superintendent of Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station, said the aircraft had taken off at around 08:30 from a factory in the area, bound for another facility in Chonburi. After climbing to roughly 10 m, it reportedly developed a technical fault, prompting the pilot to attempt an emergency landing about 30 m from the lift-off point. During touchdown, the rotor struck tall grass, igniting a fire. Both occupants exited the aircraft safely, with no serious injuries reported.

Preliminary findings suggest insufficient engine power may have led to the emergency landing. The helicopter, in service for around two years, was said to have valid flight documentation.

Rewat Hoonarat, deputy district chief of Mueang Samut Prakan, noted the crash site is within an industrial zone away from residential areas, and no nearby residents were affected. Forensic officers have been called in to examine the scene in detail, while local authorities are assessing damage and gathering evidence for the investigation.

The Guimbal Cabri G2, designed by Bruno Guimbal, a former Eurocopter engineer, is widely used in flight training. It features a composite airframe, glass cockpit avionics (such as Garmin G500H TXi), an enclosed tail rotor (Fenestron) for improved safety and noise reduction, and a digital engine governor system. The model is certified under EASA CS-27 and FAR Part 27 standards and has been approved for use in Thailand by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).

NONTHABURI — 3 May 2026, Police have arrested a boyfriend suspected of murdering his girlfriend, whose body was found in a ransacked condominium room in Nonthaburi province, authorities said.

The victim, identified as Panitsuda Hattadol, 25, an online vendor, was discovered at about 19:00 on 2 May in an eighth-storey condominium building. Her body was found beside a bed in a fourth-floor room, with two pillows placed over her head. The room showed signs of a struggle, with belongings scattered.

Investigators also found a diary written by her boyfriend, Nittirun Laosuksantisawong, 33, also an online seller, in which he claimed someone was planning to harm him and asked that his cat and property be looked after.

Police in Bang Bua Thong district said on 3 May that initial forensic findings indicate the death was a homicide. Nittirun, who disappeared after the incident, was identified as the primary suspect. Authorities said he had left the residence on the evening of 30 April and could not be contacted.

Thailand, US step up anti-trafficking crackdown push

Thailand, US step up anti-trafficking crackdown push

BANGKOK — 3 May 2026, Thailand is expanding cooperation with the United States to crack down on call-centre scam networks and human trafficking, as it seeks to upgrade its global ranking on trafficking prevention and boost investor and tourism confidence, a government spokesperson said.

Ratchada Thanadirek, deputy government spokesperson, said Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has declared the suppression of transnational crime and scam operations a national agenda.

She said authorities have made major progress, including asset seizures and legal action against Ben Smith and Yim Liak and associates, with assets worth more than 20 billion baht confiscated or frozen. Investigations have also expanded to other groups using Thailand as a base for money laundering.

Authorities have also dismantled large call-centre scam networks along the Thai-Cambodian border, where more than 10,000 people of various nationalities were found to have been trafficked and forced into labour, including romance scams and fraudulent investment schemes.

Ratchada said the prime minister has instructed all sectors to eradicate call-centre gangs and trafficking networks along border areas, both inside and outside the country, and vowed Thailand would not allow itself to be used as a transit point for such crimes.

She said Thai and US officials held talks in Washington, D.C., from 21–25 April to strengthen practical cooperation in tackling transnational call-centre scams, human trafficking and online crime. The Thai delegation was led by Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, with representatives from the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Social Development and Human Security Ministry and the Labour Ministry.

The two sides agreed to deepen intelligence-sharing and operational coordination. Ratchada noted that in the past year, American victims lost more than $6 billion (about 190 billion baht) to such crimes.

She said Thailand aims to move from Tier 2 to Tier 1 in global human trafficking assessments after remaining at Tier 2 for four consecutive years, in order to enhance the country’s image and strengthen confidence in the economy, investment and tourism.

The Royal Thai Police plans to launch the “SHIELD” system in June 2026 as a data-sharing hub among more than 10 countries to improve the prevention and suppression of call-centre scams and trafficking networks in the region.

Thailand has also received praise from the United States for establishing the IAC War Room, which integrates data with financial institutions and mobile network operators, enabling faster account freezes and asset recovery for victims, Ratchada said. Close cooperation with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation has also led to multiple arrests and asset seizures.

“The tangible results, including expanded international cooperation, enhanced investigative systems and continued suppression of transnational criminal networks, reflect the government’s commitment to protecting the public and safeguarding national security, while advancing Thailand towards sustainable international standards,” she said.

Wild elephants kill park volunteer in Prachinburi

Wild elephants kill park volunteer in Prachinburi

PRACHINBURI — 2 May 2026, Two wild elephants in Thap Lan National Park trampled a park volunteer to death while he was on patrol, officials said, in an attack believed to have been triggered when a dog startled the animals as they rested.

The incident occurred at about 18:00 on 2 May in a bamboo forest on the edge of a national reserve bordering rubber plantations in Na Di district, according to park authorities. The body was found later that evening with severe trauma.

Yosawat Thiansawat, director of Conservation Area Administration Office 1 (Prachinburi), said he was informed by Thap Lan National Park chief Prawattisat Chanthep that a rapid-response team monitoring and driving back wild elephants had reported the fatal attack.

District chief Somjai Phutthasena, police investigator Lt. Col. Alongkorn Phukhama and rescue workers from the Sajja Phutthatham Foundation rushed to the scene in Ban Khlong Din Daeng, Thung Pho subdistrict.

Officials identified the victim as Thirachai Ngamsan, 53, a member of the national park volunteer protection unit. He was found lying on his back with his arms and legs deformed from heavy impact. Numerous elephant footprints were scattered around the area. A shoulder bag, radio, hat and two water bottles believed to belong to the victim were found nearby.

The victim’s wife, Somporn Basala, 43, said her husband had left home early in the morning to tap rubber and had not returned by 15:00, prompting her to search for him. She found his body at about 16:00 and alerted neighbours and authorities.

Local elephant monitoring officials said evidence at the scene indicated the presence of two elephants, including signs they had been lying down. They believe the victim approached the resting animals during a patrol, accompanied by a dog. The dog reportedly barked, startling and angering the elephants, which then charged and fatally attacked him.

Park chief Prawattisat said the park extends condolences to the victim’s family and will provide assistance in line with regulations of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The body has been sent to Na Di Hospital for an autopsy before being returned to relatives for religious rites.

Crowds flock to Bang Saen beach, spending stays muted

Crowds flock to Bang Saen beach, spending stays muted

CHONBURI — 1 May 2026, Large crowds packed Bang Saen beach on National Labour Day, clogging roads and filling the shoreline, though vendors said spending was subdued as families tightened budgets ahead of the new school term.

At 15:30, reporters found heavy traffic on routes to Bang Saen and along the beachfront, with visitors from multiple provinces gathering in large numbers. Picnic areas were crowded with families eating together, while deckchairs were nearly fully occupied. Many adults and children were seen swimming despite the heat, seeking relief in the sea.

Thanaphon Wannapong, 42, a drinks vendor, said visitor numbers appeared high but remained below last year’s Labour Day levels. “Normally it would be completely full and business very brisk,” he said, adding that sales were weaker this year as parents conserved money for school fees and uniforms.

Anan Piamprasert, 50, who rents out inflatable rings, said income had dropped sharply. On typical holidays he would earn 4,000–5,000 baht a day, but now takes in about 1,000 baht on busy days and as little as 400 baht on weekdays. He attributed the decline to higher travel costs and families cutting back ahead of term.

A visitor, 31-year-old Yutthaphum Surisan from Min Buri, said he brought his family to Bang Saen for its convenient location and atmosphere. Despite traffic and difficulty finding parking, he said the trip was worthwhile, praising the affordable food and the cool sea as ideal for a summer outing.

Storms damage more than 350 homes in Khon Kaen, evacuation sites prepared

KHON KAEN — 1 May 2026, Authorities in Khon Kaen are accelerating assistance to more than 350 households after overnight summer storms battered the area, prompting orders for all districts to identify safe zones and evacuate residents from high-risk locations as unstable weather continues.

Pichai Wanta, district chief of Mueang Khon Kaen, said rapid response units and volunteer defence personnel are coordinating with local administrative organisations across all 17 subdistricts to survey damage and assist affected residents. The storms brought strong winds and heavy rain, damaging homes across multiple areas.

Initial assessments indicate that more than 200 homes were damaged in Don Han alone.

“Overall, in Mueang Khon Kaen district, more than 350 households have been affected by storms over the past two days. The most severe impact was in Don Han,” he said. “In urban areas, damage has been more limited, mostly involving fallen signage, trees blocking roads, and downed electricity poles.”

Municipalities and subdistrict administrative organisations have been instructed to complete damage assessments and report findings to the district office to facilitate assistance in accordance with Ministry of Interior regulations, with further coordination involving the Red Cross.

Authorities across all subdistricts and the Khon Kaen Municipality have prepared designated safe locations to serve as evacuation centres and temporary shelters. Officials will continue monitoring conditions throughout the weekend.

Each subdistrict has deployed officials, including assistant district officers, to remain on standby and provide immediate assistance in the event of further storms or strong winds, operating around the clock. Residents experiencing delays or gaps in assistance have been advised to contact the Mueang Khon Kaen district office directly for urgent support.

Phi Phi park denies viral claim of new airport plan

KRABI — 1 May 2026, Noppharat Thara Beach, Phi Phi islands National Park has dismissed viral social media claims that Phi Phi island would have its own international airport, saying the information is false.

In a statement posted on Facebook, park chief Saengsuree Songthong said an Instagram post dated 1 Apr 2026 claimed “Phi Phi will have its very own international airport starting May 1st,” accompanied by a realistic-looking image. He said the image was generated using artificial intelligence and does not depict a real location.

The area referenced is believed to be on Phi Phi Don island, around Ton Sai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay, which is privately owned land about 140 metres wide and 1,490 metres long. The site is already occupied by hotels, restaurants, a hospital and other businesses, making it unsuitable for airport construction.

Family appeals for A− and O− blood donors ahead of heart surgery

Family of Geno L. Eckley is appealing for rare blood donations ahead of his scheduled heart surgery on 19 May 2026, in Samut Sakhon.

SAMUT SAKHON — 1 May 2026, A family is urgently appealing for rare blood donations ahead of a life-saving heart operation scheduled later this month at Banphaeo General Hospital.

Geno L. Eckley is due to undergo a triple bypass surgery on 19 May, but the procedure cannot proceed without sufficient supplies of A-negative (A−) or O-negative (O−) blood, according to his family. Both blood types are considered rare, particularly in Thailand, making the search for compatible donors more challenging.

His daughter, Areya Eckley, said the family is reaching out to English-speaking communities and expatriates across the country, where these blood types are statistically more common.

“This is a life-saving operation, and the blood donations are absolutely critical,” she said in a message shared with media outlets.

Eckley, described by his family as a devoted husband and father of three, is currently preparing for surgery as doctors await confirmation that adequate blood supplies are secured.

How to donate

Eligible donors with A− or O− blood can donate directly at Banphaeo General Hospital, or through the Thai Red Cross Society at designated centres in Bangkok and Hua Hin.

Donors must provide the following details to ensure the blood is correctly allocated:

  • Patient Name: Geno L. Eckley
  • Patient Number: 017424-69

Donation locations and contacts:

  • Banphaeo General Hospital (Samut Sakhon)
    Tel: 034 419 555 ext. 9030 or 9031 (13:00–15:00)
  • Thai Red Cross (Bangkok)
    Tel: 02 263 9600
  • Thai Red Cross (Hua Hin)
    Tel: 032 512 370

The family says that even a single donation could make a crucial difference in ensuring the surgery can go ahead as planned.

Further updates are expected as the surgery date approaches.
