Biden Signs a $95 Billion War Aid Measure With Assistance for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden signed into law on Wednesday a $95 billion war aid measure that includes aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and that also has a provision that would force social media site TikTok to be sold or be banned in the U.S.

The announcement marks an end to the long, painful battle with Republicans in Congress over urgently needed assistance for Ukraine.

“We rose to the moment, we came together, and we got it done,” Biden said at White House event to announce the signing. “Now we need to move fast, and we are.”

But significant damage has been done to the Biden administration’s effort to help Ukraine repel Russia’s invasion during the funding impasse that dates back to August, when the Democratic president made his first emergency spending request for Ukraine aid. Even with a burst of new weapons and ammunition, it’s unlikely Ukraine will immediately recover after months of setbacks.

Biden approved immediately sending Ukraine $1 billion in military assistance and said the shipment would begin arriving in the “next few hours” — the first tranche from about $61 billion allocated for Ukraine. The package includes air defense capabilities, artillery rounds, armored vehicles and other weapons to shore up Ukrainian forces who have seen morale sink as Russian President Vladimir Putin has racked up win after win.

But longer term, it remains uncertain if Ukraine — after months of losses in Eastern Ukraine and sustaining massive damage to its infrastructure — can make enough progress to sustain American political support before burning through the latest influx of money.

“It’s not going in the Ukrainians’ favor in the Donbas, certainly not elsewhere in the country,” said White House national security spokesman John Kirby, referring to the eastern industrial heartland where Ukraine has suffered setbacks. “Mr. Putin thinks he can play for time. So we’ve got to try to make up some of that time.”

Tucked into the measure is a provision that gives TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, nine months to sell it or face a nationwide prohibition in the United States. The president can grant a one-time extension of 90 days, bringing the timeline to sell to one year, if he certifies that there’s a path to divestiture and “significant progress” toward executing it.

The administration and a bipartisan group of lawmakers have called the social media site a growing national security concern.

TikTok said it will wage a legal challenge against what it called an “unconstitutional” effort by Congress.

“We believe the facts and the law are clearly on our side, and we will ultimately prevail,” the company said in a statement.

The bill also includes about $26 billion in aid for Israel and a surge of about $1 billion in humanitarian relief for Palestinians in Gaza suffering as the Israel-Hamas war continues. Biden said Israel must ensure the humanitarian aid for Palestinians in bill reaches Gaza “without delay.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson delayed a vote on the supplemental aid package for months as members of his party’s far right wing, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Thomas Massie of Kentucky, threatened to move to oust him if he allowed a vote to send more assistance to Ukraine. Those threats persist.

Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive 2024 presidential GOP nominee, has complained that European allies have not done enough for Ukraine. While he stopped short of endorsing the supplemental funding package, his tone has shifted in recent days, acknowledging that Ukraine’s survival is important to the United States.

Indeed, many European leaders have long been nervous that a second Trump presidency would mean decreased U.S. support for Ukraine and for the NATO military alliance. The European anxiety was heightened in February when Trump in a campaign speech warned NATO allies that he “would encourage” Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” to countries that don’t meet defense spending goals if he returns to the White House.

It was a key moment in the debate over Ukraine spending. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg quickly called out Trump for putting “American and European soldiers at increased risk.” Biden days later called Trump’s comments “dangerous” and “un-American” and accused Trump of playing into Putin’s hands.

But in reality, the White House maneuvering to win additional funding for Ukraine started months earlier.

Biden, the day after returning from a whirlwind trip to Tel Aviv following Hamas militants’ stunning Oct. 7 attack on Israel, used a rare prime time address to make his pitch for the supplemental funding.

At the time, the House was in chaos because the Republican majority had been unable to select a speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who had been ousted more than two weeks earlier. McCarthy’s reckoning with the GOP’s far right came after he agreed earlier in the year to allow federal spending levels that many in his right flank disagreed with and wanted undone.

Far-right Republicans have also adamantly opposed sending more money for Ukraine, with the war appearing to have no end in sight. Biden in August requested more than $20 billion to keep aid flowing into Ukraine, but the money was stripped out of a must-pass spending bill even as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Washington to make a personal plea for continued U.S. backing.

By late October, Republicans finally settled on Johnson, a low-profile Louisiana Republican whose thinking on Ukraine was opaque, to serve as the next speaker. Biden during his congratulatory call with Johnson urged him to quickly pass Ukraine aid and began a months-long, largely behind-the-scenes effort to bring the matter to a vote.

In private conversations with Johnson, Biden and White House officials leaned into the stakes for Europe if Ukraine were to fall to Russia. Five days after Johnson was formally elected speaker, national security adviser Jake Sullivan outlined to him the administration’s strategy on Ukraine and assured him that accountability measures were in place in Ukraine to track where the aid was going — an effort to address a common complaint from conservatives.

On explicit orders from Biden, White House officials also avoided directly attacking Johnson over the stalled aid.

Johnson came off to White House officials as direct and an honest actor throughout the negotiations, according to a senior administration official. Biden had success finding common ground with Republicans earlier in his term to win the passage of a $1 trillion infrastructure deallegislation to boost the U.S. semiconductor industry, and an expansion of federal health care services for veterans exposed to toxic smoke from burn pits. And he knew there was plenty of Republican support for further Ukraine funding.

Biden praised Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., saying in the end they “stepped up and did the right thing.”

“History will remember this moment,” Biden said. “For all the talk about how dysfunctional things are in Washington, when you look over the past three years, we’ve seen it time and again on the critical issues. We’ve actually come together.”

At frustrating moments during the negotiations, Biden urged his aides to “just keep talking, keep working,” according to the official, who requested anonymity to discuss internal discussions.

So they did. In a daily meeting convened by White House chief of staff Jeff Zients, the president’s top aides — seated around a big oval table in Zients’ office — would brainstorm possible ways to better make the case about Ukraine’s dire situation in the absence of aid.

Steve Ricchetti, counselor to the president, and legislative affairs director Shuwanza Goff were in regular contact with Johnson. Goff and Johnson’s senior staff also spoke frequently as a deal came into focus.

The White House also sought to accommodate Johnson and his various asks. For instance, administration officials at the speaker’s request briefed Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., two conservatives who were persistent antagonists of Johnson.

All the while, senior Biden officials frequently updated McConnell as well as key Republican committee leaders, including Reps. Michael McCaul and Mike Turner.

In public, the administration deployed a strategy of downgrading intelligence that demonstrated Russia’s efforts to tighten its ties with U.S. adversaries China, North Korea and Iran to fortify Moscow’s defense industrial complex and get around U.S. and European sanctions.

The $61 billion can help triage Ukrainian forces, but Kyiv will need much more for a fight that could last years, military experts say.

Realistic goals for the months ahead for Ukraine — and its allies — include avoiding the loss of major cities, slowing Russia’s momentum and getting additional weaponry to Kyiv that could help them go on the offensive in 2025, said Bradley Bowman, a defense strategy and policy analyst at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies in Washington.

“In our microwave culture, we tend to want immediate results,” Bowman said. “And sometimes things are just hard and you can’t get immediate results. I think Ukrainian success is not guaranteed, but Russian success is if we stop supporting Ukraine.”

Biden lamented that the package did not include money to bolster U.S. border security. The White House had proposed including in the package provisions that it said would have helped stem the tide of migrants and asylum seekers coming to the U.S.

Republicans, however, rejected the proposal at the urging of Trump, who did not want to give Biden the win on an issue that’s been an albatross for the Democratic administration.

“It should have been included in this bill,” Biden said. “I’m determined to get it done for the American people.”

Military Horses Run Loose in Central London, Injuring 4 People and Causing Havoc

LONDON (AP) — Five military horses bolted during routine exercises near King Charles III’s main residence in London on Wednesday and ran loose through the center of the city, injuring at least four people and colliding with vehicles during the morning rush hour.

Chaos erupted when the horses, which were conducting an extended exercise to practise for a major upcoming military parade, became alarmed by construction noise from a nearby building. Five of the seven horses ran off from where the exercise was taking place in Belgravia, a swanky neighborhood just to the west of Buckingham Palace.

Four soldiers were thrown off, and three of them were taken to the hospital with injuries.

The riderless horses then galloped down main roads in central London, running into vehicles and stunning commuters as they headed to work. The horses were all captured shortly after and are undergoing medical tests.

Pictures and videos shared widely across social media showed two of the horses running at speed down Aldwych, in between London’s historic financial center and the busy West End theater district.

One of the horses had its front covered by what appeared to be blood or red paint. The Army has not yet confirmed whether it was blood or what caused the injury.

Megan Morra, who was on her way to work, told the BBC that she saw one of the horses had a head injury.

“There was a lot of blood,” she said. “I was a bit distressed to be honest, looking at the poor horse.”

A taxi waiting near Buckingham Palace appeared to have a car window smashed by a spooked horse, while a parked double-decker tour bus had its windshield damaged.

The horses are from the Household Cavalry, the ceremonial guard of the monarch and a regular feature of state functions in London.

“All of the horses have now been recovered and returned to camp,” an Army spokesperson said. “A number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention.”

The London Ambulance Service said it treated four people across three separate incidents in the space of ten minutes after the horses ran amok around 8:30 a.m.

Asia Pacific Gen-Zs and Millenials Prefer One Loyalty Program to Maximise Travel Value.

ASIA PACIFIC GEN-ZS AND MILLENIALS SEEK TO UNLOCK VALUE AND MAXIMIZE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE WITH ONE LOYALTY PROGRAM

Regional survey by Marriott Bonvoy uncovers key traits of travel-oriented, value-driven Gen-Zs and Millennials

24 April 2024 – A survey by Marriott Bonvoy, the award-winning travel program of Marriott International, has found that a majority of Gen Zs and Millennials in Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC) prefer the simplicity of belonging to one comprehensive loyalty travel program.

While 60% of APEC Gen Zs and Millennials are actively subscribed to loyalty programs, the challenge of juggling several loyalty programs has led most (57%) to seek out one program that meets all their travel needs. Marriott Bonvoy carried out the survey of 1,000 respondents across ten markets in APEC to better understand the shifting attitudes of Millennials and Gen Zs and their travel behaviors. The survey identified an emerging generation of travel-focused, value-driven “Savvy Explorers” in APEC who seek to maximize their travel dollars and unique travel experiences.

Travel in 2024 is a priority for Gen Zs and Millennials: 73% report their intentions to take at least two trips in the next 12 months and 91% plan to spend the same, if not more, on their trips compared to the year before. Travel is viewed as an essential lifestyle component, and most are willing to reduce everyday spending on dining out (60%), shopping sprees (57%) and their daily coffee (54%) so as to spend more on a holiday.

“Survey results suggest that Gen Zs and Millennials in APEC are purposefully strategizing how they can channel value from their everyday spend toward rewarding travel experiences. They also prefer to be part of only one all-encompassing loyalty travel program which fulfills their needs. To this end, Marriott Bonvoy – which gives members access to over 30 brands in 10,000 destinations — is well positioned to deliver greater value and unlock more experiences for Gen Zs and Millennials,” says John Toomey, Marriott International’s Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Asia Pacific excluding China.

“As testament to the program’s appeal, we have seen Marriott Bonvoy’s membership base in APEC grow by more than 50% since 2019. What’s more encouraging is that our members are highly active. They earned 40% more points in 2023 compared to 2022, and are putting their points to good use, with points redemptions increasing by more than 55% in the same period,” he reveals.

The trend of greater member growth and activity extends to the Marriott Bonvoy app. APEC member enrolment via digital channels grew by more than 25%, with mobile app downloads and active users more than doubling in 2023 compared to pre-pandemic levels.

The regional survey also uncovered notable trends amongst Gen Zs and Millennials across the 10 APEC countries. Market-specific trends can be found in Annex A.

Travel value unlocked through everyday spend

Savvy Explorers take considered steps to unlock travel value through everyday spend. Leveraging on their familiarity with loyalty programs, APEC’s Gen Z and Millennials employ varied tactics to maximize their travel rewards: four in five say they have gone out of their way to use a travel-linked credit card for everyday purchases, and 67% actively use a travel loyalty program to book and redeem local experiences and staycations.

This trend is supported by usage behaviors of Marriott Bonvoy members in APEC. They accumulated points from stays across more than 8,800 Marriott International properties globally, and through everyday spend. Redemption for hotel stays in 2023 registered a 130% increase compared to pre-pandemic times, accounting for the majority of redemptions, followed by points-to-miles conversions on partner airlines.

Hotels become a key destination to explore

Hotel experience is key to winning the hearts and dollars of the Gen Z and Millennial segment, with 99% of respondents believing their hotel choice can make or break their holiday. Hotels are also increasingly viewed as a key destination for exploration, going beyond the role of ‘accommodation’. Nearly four in five respondents expect their hotel to provide curated local programming and experiences, whilst 84% prefer to stay at a hotel with designs and activities reflective of its destination.

The recent debut of Moxy Hotels – noted for its hallmark playful nature, innovative design and contemporary amenities – in key APEC markets exemplifies Marriott International’s commitment to continuously bring new hospitality experiences to the region.

Despite a desire to maximize their travel budgets where they can, their hotel is one area that APEC’s Gen Z and Millennials are willing to invest extra travel dollars towards. Top motivations for new-generation travelers to splurge include the hotel’s room offerings (48%) and location (42%). Whilst amenities remain key considerations, these guests value a seamless travel experience, with mobile-first customer service (61%), reliable WiFi (68%) and flexible check-out (64%) outpacing traditional benefits like lounge access (42%).

Destination ‘dupes’ fuel intra-regional travel demand

International travel has returned but APEC’s Gen Z and Millennials remain committed to destinations closer to home. While iconic holiday locations like the Swiss Alps and Bora Bora maintain their appeal, 55% are opting for destinations within the region that provide a similar experience. These so-called “destination dupes” are fast gaining traction amongst this segment because they allow Gen Zs and Millennials to stretch their travel expenses (69%), discover something new (63%) and are easily accessible (62%).

As a reflection of robust intra-regional travel demand in 2023, Marriott International saw over 60% of bookings in APEC coming from within the region.

Corporate backpackers on the rise

Gen Zs and Millennials are also taking bleisure travel up a notch by capitalizing on the opportunity of a business trip to embark on multi-destination tours. In addition to extending their travel plans (68%), 84% plan to explore nearby cities and countries as part of their post-work itinerary.

With more than 560 properties across 24 brands in 22 countries and territories in APEC to choose from, Marriott International offers customers a myriad of options to mix work with pleasure.

Off-peak travel maximizes destination experience

Gen Zs and Millennials are also carefully planning when to travel to maximize their trip experience. The majority (71%) of Gen Z and Millennials say they would opt to travel during off-peak seasons so as to beat the crowds and get more out of their trip. 67% feel they can do more during low-peak seasons, and 77% leave their holidays feeling more relaxed and rejuvenated.

Where Marriott Bonvoy Can Take You

Marriott Bonvoy allows members to earn when they stay or spend at Marriott International’s growing portfolio of over 30 extraordinary brands across 139 countries and territories, and in over 8,800 properties. In APEC, members can benefit from the program’s key strategic partnerships with Singapore Airlines and co-branded credits cards in Japan, Korea and India. With Marriott Bonvoy Moments, members can get access to once-in-lifetime experiences such the opportunity to get closer to the action with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team at the Singapore Grand Prix.

From Witness to Suspect: Thai Man Helps Yakuza Hide Body Parts

Bang Bua Thong police officers cordoned up the area where they found the skull of a Japanese man on April 23, 2024.

NONTHABURI – Police officers have arrested the first suspect in the grisly case in which human body parts were found stuffed in black bags in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. Forensic results identified the deceased as a member of the Japanese Yakuza gang.

Mr. Kritsakorn Jaipitak, or Game, 31, who was originally a witness in the murder case, has become a suspect involved in hiding the body parts, including hands and bones, dumped in the area of Soi Jadsan Teedin 2, Bang Bua Thong district, Nonthaburi province.

The first piece of the body, the right hand bone with a tattoo on the wrist, was found by a boy on April 19. The boy told his mother, who is a housekeeper at a furniture factory in the alley. She quickly alerted the police, resulting in the discovery of further body parts in the neighbourhood. On April 23, the police found the skull in Soi Puyai Liam, Moo 4, Pimlaraht sub-district.

Meanwhile, officers from Region 1 police and Bang Bua Thong police jointly arrested Mr. Game and confiscated the vehicle he was driving. He was then interrogated at Bang Bua Thong Police Station later that evening.

In his preliminary statement, he claimed to have been hired by a group of three Japanese men to pick them up and take them to a factory on the outskirts of Bangkok on March 28. The deceased was sitting in the front passenger seat next to him, while the other two perpetrators, also Japanese nationals, were sitting in the back seat.

During the journey, the three Japanese men got into a heated argument in the car, which escalated into violence. When they reached the factory, the Japanese man sitting in the back of the car signaled him to stop and got out first.

He then opened the car door to smoke a cigarette when he heard a gunshot from inside the car. Upon investigation, he discovered that the Japanese man sitting in the passenger seat had died with a gunshot wound to the head.

The two remaining Japanese men then carried the body of the deceased to the factory and returned with several black sacks, which they ordered him to take to the place where the body parts had been discovered.

Region 1 police investigators then took Mr. Game to look for more evidence at the factory and interrogated him continuously on April 24.

According to criminal code Section 199, whoever stealthily burys, conceals, removes, or destroys the corpse or part of the corpse so as to conceal the birth, death, or cause of death shall be imprisoned not out of one year or fined not out of 2,000 baht, or both.

At this point, the court approved arrest warrants for Mr. Takuya Kato, 50, who called himself “Boss,” and Mr. Hiroto Suzuki, aged 33, both suspects of Japanese nationality.

In addition, the police, in coordination with the Immigration Bureau, have reported to Interpol requesting arrest warrants for the two Japanese suspects, who have criminal records and are also wanted by Japanese authorities.

The investigators believed the dispute among Yakuza members arose due to conflicting interests before their arrival in Thailand, where they wanted to negotiate with the deceased one last chance. When the negotiations failed, they resorted to homicide.

Report from the latest World Tourism Cities Federation summit is upbeat about global tourism growth this year, forecasting revenue to reach 139.6 percent of the pre-pandemic level in 2019.

WELLINGTON – Global tourism revenue is estimated to total 5.8 trillion U.S. dollars in 2024, or 139.6 percent of the pre-pandemic level in 2019, according to a report released by an international tourism summit held here.

The Report on World Tourism Economy Trends (2024) predicted that international tourist arrivals would amount to 13.579 billion in number this year, recovering to 103.9 percent of 2019.

At the same time, the report called for efforts by the global tourism industry to turn challenges from technology advancements and climate change into growth opportunities, proactively incorporating them into reshaping the industry.

The World Tourism Cities Federation Wellington Fragrant Hills Tourism Summit 2024, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, was jointly sponsored by the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) and the Wellington City Council. The WTCF, founded in 2012 on the initiative of Beijing, is the world’s first international tourism organization focusing on cities.

This year’s summit themed “Promoting Sustainable City Tourism: Innovation and Enhancement”, featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, and tourism fairs, among others. Its discussions focused on an innovative development of global tourism industry in the new era.

Tourism has emerged as a pillar industry for global economic growth, Sima Hong, executive vice chair of the WTCF Council and deputy mayor of Beijing, told the opening ceremony.

Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau shared the New Zealand capital’s experience in sustainable tourism practices, noting that sustainable tourism can help generate economic growth and create new and innovative job opportunities for the local community and economy.

By promoting responsible tourism practices, the local government can protect often fragile ecosystems, historic landmarks and indigenous cultures from the negative impacts of mass tourism, she added.

Yang Shuo, the WTCF secretary-general, said that the application of technological innovations in the tourism industry provides tourists with smart, personalized, and pleasant experiences. Smart tourism platforms built on big data and cloud computing enable real-time monitoring and management of tourist attractions, ensuring a safe environment for tourists. Leveraging online platforms to promote tourist destinations is becoming an important means to put tourism cities on the map, he said.

The two-day meeting attracted about 400 government officials, tourism organization representatives, tourism entrepreneurs and experts from 42 countries and regions.

The WTCF currently has 246 members, covering 86 countries and regions.

Thai Dating – Are Thai women loyal when in a relationship? Can They Be Trusted?

Before embarking on serious dating in Thailand, many individuals may seek assurance that the dating Thai women experience will be sincere, serious, and fulfilling. However, relationships offer no absolute guarantees that you will encounter a partner who is genuinely committed and faithful from the outset.

Particularly, questions about the loyalty and sincerity of Thai girlfriends or partners they may encounter in Thailand are often raised, especially among international clients seeking to date in Thailand.

Bangkok Matching, Thailand’s leading and longest running high-end matchmaking and dating company, often receives inquiries from foreigners about the trustworthiness and sincerity of Thai women or their potential partners. Let’s delve into some information and insights on this matter.

When it comes to honesty and sincerity, it’s important to recognize that these traits are highly individualistic. Thai women encompass a spectrum of personalities, ranging from traditional to modern. They have their own thoughts, reasoning, and often support their actions, akin to individuals from Generation Z.

However, for Generation Y, a significant clientele base of Bangkok Matching, there’s a blend of traditional values and an understanding of modern societal dynamics. This demographic, often termed as a balanced generation, comprises Thai working women who are genuinely ready to commit and elevate relationships to another level.

Therefore, if you’re an foreigner or expat seeking a serious, committed relationship with a Thai woman who is trustworthy and sincere, there are certainly options available, particularly among Thai single working women who are genuinely committed.

Thai Cultural Norms: Monogamy and Reserved Affection

Many foreigners who are new to Thailand or haven’t dated Thai individuals before may not fully understand traditional Thai dating customs, which have been ingrained over generations. Thai cultural norms have traditionally emphasized the importance of monogamy and reserved affection for women. Though these norms have somewhat diluted over time, they still persist, contributing to the perception of Thai women’s fidelity and sincerity in relationships.

It’s essential to understand these cultural nuances to comprehend whether Thai women would genuinely commit to you in a relationship. Bangkok Matching seeks to impart this understanding to its clients, highlighting the deeply rooted beliefs and societal frameworks that continue to shape Thai dating culture.

Additionally, Thai people are often characterized by their kindness and generosity, traits that are more prevalent compared to individuals from Western cultures who tend to be more independent.

Asian upbringing often instills qualities of tenderness, reservation, and confidence without being aggressive, qualities that captivate many foreigners who experience dating Thai individuals. These traits are unique to Thai people and contribute to their charm, making Thai dating experiences distinct and often irresistible to those involved.

In conclusion, while exploring romantic relationships in Thailand, it’s crucial to consider Thai cultural context and individual characteristics of Thai women. By understanding these factors, you can navigate the dating landscape more effectively and find meaningful connections based on mutual trust, sincerity, and respect.

Thai Women Can Be Trusted Because ‘Honesty’ is a Core Value Highly Esteemed by Thais.

In Thai society, various cultural norms have ingrained the importance of honesty and sincerity from early on. However, quantifying the level of honesty among Thai individuals proves challenging due to its deeply personal nature. When discussing honesty, Thais often perceive it as encompassing loyalty beyond just relationships. It’s widely believed that honesty should extend to oneself, others, and society.

An analysis titled ‘How Honest Are Thais?‘ published by Bangkok Biz News delves into this issue, offering insights relevant to the trustworthiness of Thai women and Thai people in general. The writer posits that the honesty of Thai individuals depends on whom they are expected to be honest with, a sentiment strongly echoed by Bangkok Matching, Thailand’s High-end Matchmaking and Dating Agency. This notion holds considerable truth because while honesty is a personal trait, Thai women are more likely to reciprocate honesty and sincerity if they perceive those qualities in their partners.

If you aim to find honesty and sincerity while dating Thai women in Thailand, it’s imperative to demonstrate transparency and genuineness from the outset. By doing so, you increase the likelihood of receiving reciprocal honesty and sincerity. Thus, Bangkok Matching emphasizes the importance of showcasing openness and sincerity to attract genuine relationships.

Furthermore, it’s noteworthy that Thailand’s cultural values regarding monogamous relationships remain prevalent among Thais. While polygamous relationships exist, they are relatively uncommon and often stem from personal preferences rather than societal norms.

In summary

the honesty and sincerity of Thai women and people at large are deeply intertwined with Thailand’s cultural values and individual perceptions. By understanding and embodying these values, individuals can foster meaningful connections based on trust and sincerity in the Thai dating scene.

Tesla 1Q Profit Falls 55%, but Stock Jumps as Company Moves To Speed Production of Cheaper Vehicles

Tesla’s first-quarter net income plummeted 55%, but its stock price surged in after-hours trading Tuesday as the company said it would accelerate production of new, more affordable vehicles.

The Austin, Texas, company said it made $1.13 billion from January through March compared with $2.51 billion in the same period a year ago.

Investors and analysts were looking for some sign that Tesla will take steps to stem its stock’s slide this year and grow sales. The company did that in a letter to investors Tuesday, saying that production of smaller, more affordable models will start ahead of previous guidance.

The smaller models, which apparently include the Model 2 small car that is expected to cost around $25,000, will use new generation vehicle underpinnings and some features of current models. The company said it would be built on the same manufacturing lines as its current products.

On a conference call with analysts, CEO Elon Musk said he expects production to start in the second half of next year “if not late this year.”

New factories or massive new production lines won’t be needed for the new vehicles, Musk said.

“This update may result in achieving less cost reduction than previously expected but enables us to prudently grow our vehicle volumes in a more capex efficient manner during uncertain times,” the investor letter said.

But Musk gave few specifics on just what the new vehicles will be and whether they would be variants of current models. “I think we’ve said all we will on that front,” he told an analyst.

He did say that he expects Tesla to sell more vehicles this year than last year’s 1.8 million.

The company also appears to be counting on a vehicle built to be a fully autonomous robotaxi as the catalyst for future earnings growth. Musk has said the robotaxi will be unveiled on Aug. 8.

Shares of Tesla rose 11% in trading after Tuesday’s closing bell, but they are down more than 40% this year. The S&P 500 index is up about 5% for the year.

Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein said the company gave guidance about its future that was clearer than in the past, allaying investor concerns about production of the Model 2 and future growth. “I think for now we’re likely to see the stock stabilize,” he said. “I think Tesla provided an outlook today that can make investors feel more assured that management is righting the ship.”

But if sales fall again in the second quarter, the guidance will go out the window and concerns will return, he said.

Tesla reported that first-quarter revenue was $21.3 billion, down 9% from last year as worldwide sales dropped nearly 9% due to increased competition and slowing demand for electric vehicles.

Excluding one-time items such as stock-based compensation, Tesla made 45 cents per share, falling short of analyst estimates of 49 cents, according to FactSet.

The company’s gross profit margin, the percentage of revenue it gets to keep after expenses, fell once again to 17.4%. A year ago it was 19.3%, and it peaked at 29.1% in the first quarter of 2022.

Over the weekend, Tesla lopped $2,000 off the price of the Models Y, S and X in the U.S. and reportedly made cuts in other countries including China as global electric vehicle sales growth slowed. It also slashed the cost of “Full Self Driving” by one third to $8,000.

Tesla also announced last week that it would cut 10% of its 140,000 employees, and Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja said Tuesday the cuts will be across the board. Growth companies build up duplication that needs to be pruned like a tree to continue growing, he said.

Musk has been touting the robotaxi as a growth catalyst for Tesla since the hardware for it went on sale late in 2015.

In 2019, Musk promised a fleet of autonomous robotaxis by 2020 that would bring income to Tesla owners and make their car values appreciate. Instead, they’ve declined with price cuts, as the autonomous robotaxis have been delayed year after year while being tested by owners as the company gathers road data for its computers.

Neither Musk nor other Tesla executives on Tuesday’s call would specify when they expect Tesla vehicles to drive themselves as well as humans do. Instead, Musk touted the latest version of Tesla’s autonomous driving software — which the company misleadingly brands as “Full Self Driving” despite the fact that it still requires human supervision — and said that “it’s only a matter of time before we exceed the reliability of humans, and not much time at that.”

It didn’t take the Tesla CEO long to begin expounding on the possibility of turning on self-driving capabilities for millions of Tesla vehicles at once, although again without estimating when that might actually occur. He went on to insist that “if somebody doesn’t believe that Tesla is going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company.”

Early last year the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made Tesla recall its “Full Self-Driving” system because it can misbehave around intersections and doesn’t always follow speed limits. Tesla’s less-sophisticated Autopilot system also was recalled to bolster its driver monitoring system.

Some experts don’t think any system that relies solely on cameras like Tesla’s can ever reach full autonomy.
