  • Hold a foreign passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the time of application.
  • Have health insurance with coverage of at least $50,000, social security benefits covering treatment in Thailand, or a deposit of at least $100,000 (with proof of it being maintained for 12 months through a bank statement summary).
  • Must have had an annual income of at least $80,000 for the past two years
    • If you earn between $40,000-80,000, you must hold a master’s degree or higher in science or technology or possess unique expertise relevant to your role in Thailand.
  • Must have 5 years of experience in a specific industry.
  • Your employer in Thailand must be a business in any targeted industry, a higher education institution, a research institution, a specialized training institution, or a Thai government agency.

If these criteria don’t quite fit your situation, there are three other LTR Visa categories you can apply for, each with its own set of distinct requirements.

What Are the Benefits of the Thai LTR Visa for Highly-Skilled Professionals?

  • Long-Term Stability

The LTR Visa offers a 5-year renewable permit, enabling a stay of up to 10 years. This means the holder need not worry about securing their visa status every year as they would with most long-term Thai visas.

  • Streamlined Immigration

LTR Visa holders experience quick passage through Thai international airports thanks to Fast-Track access, and they may freely leave and re-enter Thailand without the need for re-entry permits. While most long-term Thai visas require the holder to report to immigration every 90 days, an LTR Visa allows you to go only once a year.

  • Reduced Tax Rate

A standout benefit is the reduced personal income tax rate of just 17%, exclusive to LTR Visa holders in this category.

  • Work Permit Advantages
      • The work permit application process is streamlined at the One Stop Service Center, making it quicker and more cost-effective for you to work legally in Thailand.
      • Exemption from the standard 4:1 Thai-to-foreigner employment ratio increases your appeal as a job candidate in Thailand.
  • Family Inclusion
  • You may include up to 4 family members on your LTR Visa application, eliminating the need to secure individual visa solutions.

How Do You Apply for the Thai LTR Visa?

To successfully apply for the LTR Visa for Professionals, you must meet all eligibility criteria and closely follow the application guidelines. Otherwise, you may face delays or a rejection, which can completely derail your travel and work schedule. This section details the necessary steps and key documents to make your application process smooth and effective.

  • Document Preparation

Collect all necessary documents to support your application. This includes a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, a recent passport-size photo, and proof of health insurance coverage. You must also provide evidence of your financial stability and qualifications, such as tax returns, bank statements, pay slips, employment contracts, and educational certificates.

  • Application Submission

Submit your application through the official Thai immigration website or in person at a Thai Embassy or Consulate. Your documents must be in Thai or English. If they’re in another language, a certified translator must translate them.

  • Visa Approval and Issuance

After submitting your application, the processing time can range from four to eight weeks. Once approved, you will receive an approval letter with instructions on how to acquire your visa. Depending on whether you applied within Thailand or abroad, you may collect your visa electronically or in person at the Embassy or Consulate. The visa fee is 50,000 THB if paid in Thailand, with varying fees if paid abroad.

Thailand Elite Visa: a Luxury Alternative to the LTR Visa

If you are unable to meet the requirements for the LTR Visa or want a simpler long-term stay in Thailand with access to VIP perks, the Thailand Elite Visa is a premium option. While it does not allow for work permits, holders of this visa, available through the Thailand Privilege program, enjoy an enormous selection of free perks and luxury benefits that make this option the most rewarding way to live in Thailand long-term.

The Thailand Elite Visa is also exceptionally convenient, enabling stays of 5 to 20 years depending on the Thailand Privilege membership selected, and allowing for family memberships as well. There are no age, income, asset, employment, marital, or insurance requirements for this visa, just a substantial upfront fee.
