Indian tourist and Chiang Mai rider settle fare dispute with police

CHIANG MAI — 19 July 2026, A dispute between an Indian tourist and a ride-hailing driver in Chiang Mai has sparked online discussion after a misunderstanding over the fare led to an argument. Police later stepped in to mediate the dispute, bringing the incident to a peaceful resolution.

The incident was shared by Rajahtana Sriphan, one of the responding officers, who said the female Indian tourist booked a ride through a ride-hailing application to Pong Yaeng in Mae Rim district. She then asked the driver to wait before continuing the journey to Arcade Bus Terminal or her hotel without ending the trip in the application.

According to Rajahtana, the tourist believed the return fare was 280 baht after receiving an in-app discount. The rider, however, maintained that the discounted fare applied only to the outbound journey and that the total fare for the entire trip should have been about 450 baht.

Rajahtana said the discussion became prolonged because of communication difficulties between the two parties. The tourist insisted she understood the journey to be covered by a fixed fare, while the rider denied that any such agreement had been made.

He intervened to mediate the dispute, concluding that the disagreement stemmed primarily from miscommunication over language and service details. He then proposed a compromise acceptable to both parties.

Although the Indian tourist offered to settle the dispute by paying 350 baht, the rider maintained that 450 baht was the appropriate fare. In the end, however, the driver decided to accept 280 baht to bring the matter to a close.

Following the settlement, Rajahtana noted that another foreign tourist who had been observing the incident nearby gave the rider some money out of sympathy for the situation. The individual was not involved in the negotiations between the two parties.

He later wrote on his personal Facebook page that the incident illustrated how many disputes between service providers and tourists arise from unclear communication rather than dishonest intentions on either side.

He said service providers may assume customers already understand how the service works, while tourists from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds may interpret the process differently, allowing even minor misunderstandings to escalate into disputes.

The officer stressed that he was not seeking to determine who was right or wrong but hoped the case would serve as a lesson for both service providers and tourists to communicate important details clearly before a journey begins to help prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.

The incident has attracted significant attention online, with social media users expressing differing views on the responsibilities of both tourists and service providers. However, the ride-hailing company had not issued a statement on the incident.
