PATTAYA — More than 200 police officers and social workers raided beaches and public areas in Pattaya on 29 August in a crackdown on suspected prostitution ahead of an expected visit by around 5,000 US military personnel next month.
Authorities said the operation targeted individuals allegedly loitering, soliciting or approaching tourists for prostitution around Pattaya Beach, Second Road and other identified high-risk public areas.
A total of 25 people were detained, including 18 Thai nationals, five Laotians and two Ugandans.
All 25 were taken for legal proceedings, including fines under Thailand’s legal framework. Authorities noted that some offenses previously carrying criminal penalties have been subject to the 2022 law on fines in lieu of criminal punishment, allowing offenders to pay a fine without it being treated as a criminal penalty.
The Chon Buri Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office said such behavior affects public order and the image of Pattaya as a major international tourist destination.
The operation was also intended to reinforce that prostitution remains illegal under Thai law, despite Pattaya’s long-standing reputation for its nightlife and sex industry.
The crackdown comes as around 5,000 US military personnel are expected to make a port call in Pattaya in early September after completing missions in the Middle East.
