CHIANG MAI — 9 October 2026, Thai immigration police have arrested a 40-year-old Chinese national in Chiang Mai who is wanted by Chinese authorities in a fraud case involving losses of more than 20 million yuan, or over 100 million baht. He was also found to have overstayed his permission to remain in Thailand by more than 62 days.
Police from Immigration Division 5’s investigation unit, led by Pol. Maj. Wichai Kawichai, arrested the man, identified as Sun Hao, at a hotel room in Chang Khlan subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai district, on 9 October. Officers had received information about a Chinese guest whose behaviour was considered suspicious.
Immigration officers checked his passport and records in the Immigration Bureau’s Biometrics information system. The records showed that he entered Thailand on 5 April 2026 on a tourist visa valid until 3 June. He was subsequently granted an extension under the student visa category until 7 August 2026.

At the time of his arrest, his permission to stay in Thailand had expired more than 62 days earlier, according to police.
Further checks found that Chinese authorities had issued an arrest warrant for Sun in connection with an alleged fraud case involving losses exceeding 20 million yuan, equivalent to more than 100 million baht. He was reportedly believed to have fled to Chiang Mai to evade prosecution in China.
Thai police charged him with being a foreign national who entered and remained in the Kingdom after his permission to stay had expired. He was transferred to Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station for legal proceedings.
Authorities are expected to begin the process of returning him to China to face the case there.
