Bryant’s Helicopter Flew in Fog That Grounded Other Choppers

CALABASAS, Calif. (AP) — The helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant and eight others that crashed into a rugged hillside outside Los Angeles was flying in foggy conditions considered dangerous enough that local police agencies grounded their choppers.

The helicopter plunged into a steep hillside at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday with an impact that scattered debris over an area the size of a football field and killed all aboard. The accident unleashed an outpouring of grief from admirers around the world who mourned the sudden loss of the all-time basketball great who spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Thousands of fans, many wearing Bryant jerseys and chanting his name, gathered outside the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, home of the Lakers and site of Sunday’s Grammy Awards where Bryant was honored.

The 41-year-old Bryant, who perished with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was one of the game’s most popular players and the face of the 16-time NBA champion Lakers.

The cause of the crash was unknown, but conditions at the time were such that the Los Angeles Police Department and the county sheriff’s department grounded their helicopters.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner, Dr. Jonathan Lucas, said the rugged terrain complicated efforts to recover the remains. He estimated it would take at least a couple of days to complete that task before identifications can be made.

Bryant’s helicopter left Santa Ana in Orange County, south of Los Angeles, shortly after 9 a.m. and circled for a time just east of Interstate 5, near Glendale. Air traffic controllers noted poor visibility around Burbank, just to the north, and Van Nuys, to the northwest.

After holding up the helicopter for other aircraft, they cleared the Sikorsky S-76 to proceed north along Interstate 5 through Burbank before turning west to follow U.S Route 101, the Ventura Highway.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., the helicopter turned again, toward the southeast, and climbed to more than 2000 feet (609 meters). It then descended and crashed into the hillside at about 1400 feet (426 meters), according to data from Flightradar24.

When it struck the ground, the helicopter was flying at about 160 knots (184 mph) and descending at a rate of more than 4000 feet per minute, the data showed.

The chopper went down in Calabasas, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy in nearby Thousand Oaks was holding a basketball tournament on Sunday.

Federal transportation safety investigators were on their way to the scene. Among other things, they will look at the pilot’s history, the chopper’s maintenance records and the records of its owner and operator, said NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy at a news conference.

Kurt Deetz, a pilot who used to fly Bryant in the chopper, said the crash was more likely caused by bad weather than engine or mechanical issues.

“The likelihood of a catastrophic twin engine failure on that aircraft — it just doesn’t happen,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

Justin Green, an aviation attorney in New York who flew helicopters in the Marine Corps, said pilots can become disoriented in low visibility, losing track of which direction is up. Green said a pilot flying an S-76 would be instrument-rated, meaning that person could fly the helicopter without relying on visual cues from outside.

The National Transportation Safety Board typically issues a preliminary report within about 10 days that will give a rough summary of what investigators have learned. A ruling on the cause can take a year or more.

Colin Storm was in his living room in Calabasas when he heard what sounded to him like a low-flying airplane or helicopter.

“It was very foggy so we couldn’t see anything,” he said. “But then we heard some sputtering and then a boom.”

The fog cleared a bit, and Storm could see smoke rising from the hillside in front of his home.

Firefighters hiked in with medical equipment and hoses, and medical personnel rappelled to the site from a helicopter, but found no survivors, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said.

News of the charismatic superstar’s death rocketed around the sports and entertainment worlds, with many taking to Twitter to register their shock, disbelief and anguish.

“Words can’t describe the pain I am feeling. I loved Kobe — he was like a little brother to me,” retired NBA great Michael Jordan said. “We used to talk often, and I will miss those conversations very much. He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force.”

Bryant retired in 2016 as the third-leading scorer in NBA history, finishing two decades with the Lakers as a prolific shot-maker with a sublime all-around game and a relentless competitive ethic. He held that spot in the league scoring ranks until Saturday night, when the Lakers’ LeBron James passed him for third place during a game in Philadelphia, Bryant’s hometown.

He was the league MVP in 2008 and a two-time NBA scoring champion, and he earned 12 selections to the NBA’s All-Defensive teams. He teamed with Shaquille O’Neal in a combustible partnership to lead the Lakers to consecutive NBA titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

His Lakers tenure was marred by scandal when in 2003, Bryant was accused of raping a 19-year-old employee at a Colorado resort. He said the two had consensual sex, and prosecutors later dropped the felony sexual assault charge at the request of the accuser. The woman later filed a civil suit against Bryant that was settled out of court.

Bryant went on to win two more titles in 2009 and 2010, and retired in 2016.

Among those killed in the crash were John Altobelli, 56, longtime head coach of Southern California’s Orange Coast College baseball team; his wife, Keri; and daughter, Alyssa, who played on the same basketball team as Bryant’s daughter, said Altobelli’s brother, Tony, who is the sports information director at the school.

Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley tweeted that the dead also included Christina Mauser, a girls basketball coach at a nearby private elementary school. Her husband, Matt Mauser, founded the Tijuana Dogs, a popular Orange County band. In a Facebook post he said: “My kids and I are devastated. We lost our beautiful wife and mom today in a helicopter crash.”

China Counts 106 Virus Deaths as US, Others Move to Evacuate

BEIJING (AP) — China’s death toll from a new viral disease that is causing mounting global concern rose by 25 to at least 106 on Tuesday as the United States and other governments prepared to fly their citizens out of the locked-down city at center of the outbreak.

The total includes the first death in Beijing, the Chinese capital, and 24 more fatalities in Hubei province, where the first illnesses from the newly identified coronavirus occurred in December.

Asian stock markets tumbled for a second day, dragged down by worries about the virus’s global economic impact.

The U.S. Consulate in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where authorities cut off most access Jan. 22 in an effort to contain the disease, was preparing to fly its diplomats and some other Americans out of the city on Wednesday. Japan and South Korea said they would send planes to Wuhan this week to evacuate their citizens. France, Mongolia and other governments also planned evacuations.

China’s increasingly drastic containment efforts began with the suspension of plane, train and bus links to Wuhan, a city of 11 million people. That lockdown has expanded to 17 cities with more than 50 million people in the most far-reaching disease-control measures ever imposed.

China extended the Lunar New Year holiday by three days to Sunday to reduce the risk of infection by keeping offices and factories nationwide closed and the public at home. Authorities in Shanghai, a global business center and home to 25 million people, extended the holiday in that city by an additional week to Feb. 9.

U.S. health officials expanded their recommendation for people to avoid non-essential travel to any part of China, rather than just Wuhan and other areas most affected by the outbreak.

Mongolia closed its vast border with China and North Korea said it was strengthening quarantine measures. Hong Kong and Malaysia are barring visitors from Hubei. Chinese travel agencies were ordered to cancel group tours nationwide.

There were 1,771 new cases confirmed in China on Monday, raising the national total to 4,515, according to the National Health Commission. It said 976 people were in serious condition.

The government has sent 6,000 extra medical workers to Wuhan from across China, including 1,800 who were due to arrive Tuesday, a commission official, Jiao Yahui, said at a news conference.

A baby boy was delivered by surgery in Wuhan after his 27-year-old mother was hospitalized as a “highly suspected” virus case, state TV reported. The mother, who has a fever and cough, was 37 weeks pregnant, or two weeks less than a standard full term.

Doctors wore protective masks and clothing for the delivery Friday at Union Hospital.

“It was unlikely for her to be able to give natural birth,” said the hospital’s deputy director of obstetrics, Zhao Yin. “After the baby was born, the mother would suffer less pressure in her lungs and she could get better treatment.”

Also Tuesday, the Education Ministry canceled English proficiency and other tests for students to apply to foreign universities. The ministry said the new semester for public schools and universities following Lunar New Year was postponed until further notice.

The Hong Kong government announced some government offices would remain closed until at least Monday and non-essential public employees were allowed to work from home.

Chinese financial markets were closed for the holiday, but stock indexes in Tokyo, Seoul and Sydney all declined.

Beijing’s official response has “vastly improved” since the 2002-03 SARS outbreak, which also originated in China, but “fears of a global contagion are not put to bed,” said Vishnu Varathan at Mizuho Bank in Singapore.

Airlines, resorts and other companies that rely on travel and tourism suffered steep losses. Prices of gold and bonds rose as traders moved money into safe haven holdings.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange, one of the world’s busiest, announced it was postponing the resumption of trading after the holiday by three days to Monday.

Scientists are concerned about the new virus because it is closely related to other diseases including SARS, which killed nearly 800 people.

So far, the new coronavirus doesn’t seem to spread as easily among people as SARS or influenza. Most of the cases that spread between people were of family members and health workers who had contact with patients. That suggests the new virus isn’t well adapted to infect people.

China has reported eight cases in Hong Kong and five in Macao, and more than 45 cases have been confirmed elsewhere in the world. Almost all involve mainland Chinese tourists or people who visited Wuhan.

On Tuesday, Taiwan said two 70-year-old tourists from Wuhan had been confirmed to have the disease, raising its total to seven cases. Thailand reported six members of a family from Hubei were new cases, raising its total to 14.

Germany confirmed its first case late Monday. Infections also have been confirmed in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal, France, Canada, Australia and Sri Lanka.

The five American cases — two in southern California and one each in Washington state, Chicago and Arizona — are people who had recently arrived from central China. Health officials said they had no evidence the virus was spreading in the United States and they believe the risk to Americans remains low.

During the SARS outbreak, Chinese authorities were criticized for reacting slowly and failing to disclose information. The government has responded more aggressively to the latest outbreak.

Wuhan is building two hospitals, one with 1,500 beds and another with 1,000, for the growing number of patients. The first is scheduled to be finished next week.

The coronavirus family includes the common cold but also more severe illnesses such as SARS and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. The new virus causes cold- and flu-like symptoms, including cough and fever, and in more severe cases, shortness of breath and pneumonia.

The virus is thought to have spread to people from wild animals sold at a Wuhan market. China on Sunday banned trade in wild animals and urged people to stop eating meat from them.

‘Big Joke’ Left Country, Days After Gov’t Warning

A file photo of Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn

BANGKOK — Former immigration police commander Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn left Thailand on Monday, his aides said, adding even more mystery to an ongoing investigation into a recent drive-by shooting that targeted him.

Surachate departed Thailand with his wife and family for India, where he would take up monkhood for about a week, according to his aides, just days after the government issued him with an unusually harsh warning not to bring disgrace to the bureaucracy. The inquiry into the shooting also appeared to be going nowhere.

“The incident took place at night, so it’s quite difficult to analyze the footage. There’s not enough light and the traffic blocks our view of the suspects,” metropolitan police’s chief investigator Col. Santi Chainiramai said.

‘Big Joke’ Shooting: Senior Cop Removed Over Leaked Phone Call

He declined to discuss the case any further, instead referring all inquiries to the Metropolitan Division 6, who oversees the investigation.

But when reached by a reporter, division commander Maj. Gen. Methee Rakpan declined to comment about the case. The chief of Bangrak Police Station, who has jurisdiction over the area where the shooting took place, also declined an interview.

Police spokesman Krissana Pattanacharoen could not be reached for comment as of publication time.

Surachate was not injured in the drive-by shooting on Jan. 6. He later suggested “those in power” engineered the attack because he refused to sign on a multi-billion baht biometric project at the airport due to financial irregularity during his tenure as the immigration chief.

The matter took an even stranger turn when a leaked phone conversation shows police commissioner Chakthip Chaijinda telling his deputy not to discuss the case to the media and draw attention to the shooting.

Two senior police commanders were later removed in connection with the leaked audio clip, Gen. Wirachai Songmetta and Gen. Chaiwat Ketworachai.

The government also published a lengthy statement on Friday telling Surachate not to “commit any act that could be considered a gravely evil act,” “report false information to his supervisor,” “commit any act that bullies, threatens, or intimidates the civil service,” or “insults or disrespect the people.”

The notice then instructed him to respect the bureaucracy’s confidentiality and “maintain unity” with fellow civil servants.

It was the latest turn of events for Surachate’s career. The immigration chief was abruptly removed from the force in April 2019 and transferred to an obscure civilian post under the Prime Minister’s Office, though he remained largely missing from the public until the shooting earlier this month.

Tourism Industry Fears Revenue Plunge Caused by China Travel Ban

An immigration police officer wears a mask as he inspects a Taiwanese tourist's travel document at Don Mueang Airport on Jan. 26, 2020.

BANGKOK — Thailand’s lucrative tourism industry is bracing for a severe slump in revenue after China suspended all outbound group tours in an effort to contain the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, trade guild representatives said Monday.

Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn said he expects a sharp downturn in the number of tourists from both China and elsewhere in the coming months due to the epidemic and the Chinese government’s decision to stop the sales of all domestic and international tour packages on Friday.

“We’re seeing a 70 percent drop from the usual amount of 800,000 Chinese tourists per month,” Yuthasak said. “People from other countries also don’t want to travel as well due to fears of the outbreak.”

Read: ‘It’s Just a Flu,’ Health Min Insists Coronavirus Under Control

While he believed that the current outbreak will be less severe than the SARS contagion in 2003, he said Thailand would need to supplement its tourism industry for at least three months with tourists from other countries such as India, South Korea, Japan, and ASEAN members.

But a prominent tourism business federation said it is too early to evaluate the damage since the situation is still unclear.

“They change their policies every day. There’s even a rumor today that the Chinese government has imposed a travel ban on all tourists, which we’re verifying it with our counterparts in China,” president of Association of Thai Travel Agents Vichit Prakobgosol said in an interview.

PNY 6497

Though Vichit didn’t have an available figure at hand, he estimated the impact on the tourism industry would be tremendous, as this time of the year is a “peak season” for Chinese holidaymakers who typically celebrate the Lunar New Year abroad.

“It would be too early to assess the impact now,” Vichit said. “However, we can still count on individual and business travellers who make up about 40 percent of all Chinese visitors to Thailand.”

The industry is already struggling with the baht currency appreciation, in which the currency rose by approximately 10 percent against the US Dollar in the past months.

According to data published by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Chinese tourists spent about 580 billion baht last year, or about 30 percent of the overall spending by foreign tourists.

The tourism industry as a whole contributes to 20 percent of Thai GDP, according to the Bank of Thailand.

No Explanation: Democratic Revolt Leaders Statues Gone Missing

Construction workers clear concrete debris from where the statues once stood in Lopburi on Jan. 27, 2020.

LOPBURI — Statues dedicated to two military officers behind a revolt that ended Thailand’s absolute monarchy eight decades ago were missing as of Monday.

The statues, which depicted Phraya Phahol Pholphayuhasena and Field Marshal Pibulsongkram, at an army base in Lopburi were replaced with a huge portrait of the late King Rama IX. Construction workers were still removing concrete debris from where the statues once stood when a reporter visited the base on Monday afternoon.

Even the name of the base was stripped of references to Phahol Pholphayuhasena; his name was removed from the sign in front of the installation as of Monday. It’s now known simply as “ Artillery Center.” Two army officers interviewed for this story gave no explanation for the removals.

img 20200127 134555
What was known as “Phaholyothin Artillery Center” for decades is now renamed as “Artillery Center.”

“We can’t tell you,” Lt.Col. Suppichai Paorith, an officer at the base’s civilian affairs division, said when asked about the name change and the missing statues.

His colleague, Col. Korn Ittiwiboon, said the new name is not considered official until an announcement is published in the Royal Government Gazette. An earlier media said the base would be renamed Fort King Bhumibol.

Both men said they have no knowledge of where the two statues might be, though one of the laborers working on the field said the statue depicting Field Marshal Pibul was removed “about a week ago.”

Phraya Phahol and Field Marshal Pibulsongkram were leaders of a group of civilians and military officers called the People’s Party, who overthrew the royal government on June 24, 1932, and introduced parliamentary democracy to Thailand, then known as Siam.

Another statue of the Field Marshal, who served multiple terms as a Prime Minister in his long political career, enshrined at a defense college in Bangkok also went missing without any explanation, a report on Prachatai news site said.

Other relics associated with the revolt have disappeared in recent years. A plaque celebrating the revolution was replaced in 2017 with one praising the monarchy. In December 2018, a monument marking the defeat of an ultraroyalist counter-revolution was dismantled overnight.

The mainstream media were also discouraged from investigating or reporting about the disappearances.

‘It’s Just a Flu,’ Health Min Insists Coronavirus Under Control

Chinese tourists wear masks as they tour the Grand Palace complex in Bangkok on Jan. 26, 2020.

BANGKOK — The government on Monday said it is closely monitoring the coronavirus epidemic in Thailand, where officials have confirmed eight cases of infection so far.

Speaking to reporters this morning, PM Prayut Chan-o-cha said there is nothing to worry about the virus as the government still has the situation under control, while a top health minister sought to downplay the growing public anxiety by likening the new strain of virus to a cold.

“I’m not a doctor, but I took care of myself for over 50 years,” Anutin Charnvirakul said on Sunday. “It’s just a type of flu. I see it as a flu … what we do when we see someone with the flu, we do that, just the same.”

He also urged the public to express solidarity with the experts working to contain the infection, instead of criticizing them.

“People shouldn’t criticize them or say things that demoralize them,” Anutin said. “We already have procedures for this situation.”

PM Prayut also said the government already ordered preparations to monitor and contain the coronavirus outbreak “a month ago.”

His remark came after the health ministry confirmed the eighth case of coronavirus patients in Thailand. Seven out of the eight patients were Chinese tourists, while the other is a Thai woman who recently visited the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus is thought to have originated.

Five of the eight patients had already recovered, the ministry added.

Thailand is a popular destination for Chinese visitors; over 10 million tourists from the mainland visited the kingdom in 2019. The coronavirus outbreak also came at a time of influx of visitors from China during the Chinese New Year holidays.

BANGKOK — Police on Monday said two motorcycle taxis were charged with assault for headlocking a GrabBike rider in a footage that went viral last week.

Phaholyothin police chief Autthawut Niwatsophol said the pair was also charged with damaging properties over the incident. The video posted to social media on Friday shows the two motosai taxis headlocking the ride-hailing service driver who was trying to pick up a passenger in Soi Ratchadaphisek 36.

Pol. Col. Autthawut added that the two parties could not agree on the settlement, and so the case is now being brought to the court.

It is not immediately known whether the two motorcycle taxi drivers were also suspended from service. Land Transport Department director Jirut Wisanjit said he was in a meeting and told a reporter he would call back.

Foreigner’s Death Inside Airport Jail Blamed on ‘Illness’

Body of Hungarian national Balog Laszlo is carried out of Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station on Jan. 26, 2020.

BANGKOK — A 60-year-old Hungarian national was found dead inside an airport police station after spending just a day under detention, police said Monday.

Balog Laszlo, who was sent to Suvarnabhumi Airport’s holding cell on Saturday on overstay offenses, did not appear to have any injuries on his body, leading police to suspect he might have died from illness on Sunday morning, police spokesman Krissana Pattanacharoen said.

The Hungarian Embassy has been informed of his death, Col. Krissana said.

Nevertheless, the spokesman added that a disciplinary inquiry has been launched to determine whether any there was foul play or negligence involved.

Foreigners’ deaths in police custody are not unheard of. In 2018, two foreign men died while held at an immigration detention center. Police also blamed their deaths on their pre-existing medical conditions.

CALABASAS, Calif. (AP) — NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others were killed Sunday when their helicopter plunged into a steep hillside in dense morning fog in Southern California, his sudden death at age 41 touching off an outpouring of grief for a star whose celebrity transcended basketball.

The chopper went down in Calabasas, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities said nine people were aboard and presumed dead. Bryant, an all-time basketball great who spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, was among the victims, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, also was killed, a different person familiar with the case said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva would not confirm the identities of the victims Sunday pending official word from the coroner.

“God bless their souls,” Villanueva said at a news conference.

The cause of the crash was unknown.

“Words can’t describe the pain I am feeling. I loved Kobe — he was like a little brother to me,” retired NBA great Michael Jordan said. “We used to talk often, and I will miss those conversations very much. He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force.”

NBA players were in tears during pregame warm-ups as crowds chanted “Kobe! Kobe!” Tiger Woods was unaware of the news during his final round at Torrey Pines in San Diego when he started hearing the gallery yell “Do it for Mamba,” referring to Bryant by his nickname.

The medical examiner’s office said specialists were working at the scene to recover the bodies, and investigators were trying to confirm identities. Federal transportation safety investigators were en route.

Bryant’s helicopter left Santa Ana shortly after 9 a.m. and circled for a time just east of Interstate 5, near Glendale.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., the helicopter turned again, toward the southeast, and climbed to more than 2,000 feet above sea level. It then descended and crashed into the hillside at about 1,400 feet, according to data from Flightradar24.

When it struck the ground, the helicopter was flying at about 160 knots (184 mph) and descending at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute, the Flightradar24 data showed.

At the time of the crash, the Los Angles County Sheriff’s Department had grounded its own helicopters because of the poor weather conditions. The impact scattered debris over an area about the size of a football field, Villanueva said.

Among other things, investigators will look at the pilot’s history, the chopper’s maintenance history, and the records of its owner and operator, NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy said at a news conference.

Justin Green, an aviation attorney in New York who flew helicopters in the Marine Corps, said weather may have contributed to the crash. Pilots can become disoriented in low visibility, losing track of which direction is up. Green said a pilot flying an S-76 would be instrument-rated, meaning they could fly the helicopter without relying on visual cues from outside.

All around the world, people were glued to their phones and TV screens as news of the crash spread and networks broke into programming with live coverage. A visibly shaken LeBron James wiped his eyes with tissues and walked away alone from the Lakers plane that had just landed in Southern California.

Thousands of people gathered to mourn Bryant outside the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. Mourners in No. 24 jerseys mixed with those in fancy dress arriving at the downtown arena for Sunday evening’s Grammy Awards.

People carried flowers and chanted “Kobe!” and “MVP!” under giant video screens showing Bryant’s smiling face.

“This is where we needed to be,” said Naveen Cheerath, 31.

Bryant retired in 2016 as the third-leading scorer in NBA history, finishing two decades with the Lakers as a prolific shot-maker with a sublime all-around game and a relentless competitive ethic. He held that spot in the league scoring ranks until Saturday night, when the Lakers’ James passed him for third place during a game in Philadelphia, Bryant’s hometown.

“Continuing to move the game forward (at)KingJames,” Bryant wrote in his last tweet. “Much respect my brother.”

Bryant had one of the greatest careers in recent NBA history and became one of the game’s most popular players as the face of the 16-time NBA champion Lakers franchise. He was the league MVP in 2008 and a two-time NBA scoring champion, and he earned 12 selections to the NBA’s All-Defensive teams.

He teamed with O’Neal in a combustible partnership to lead the Lakers to consecutive NBA titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

His Lakers tenure was marred by scandal, when in 2003, Bryant was accused of raping a 19-year-old employee at a Colorado resort. He said the two had consensual sex, and prosecutors later dropped the felony sexual assault charge at the request of the accuser. The woman later filed a civil suit against Bryant that was settled out of court.

Bryant went on to win two more titles in 2009 and 2010, and retired in 2016 after scoring 60 points in his final NBA game.

After leaving the game, Bryant had more time to play coach to daughter Gianna, who had a budding basketball career of her own and, her father said, wanted to one day play in the WNBA. They were seen sitting courtside at a Brooklyn Nets game late last year, Bryant clearly passing along his wisdom to his daughter. He regularly showcased her talents on the court on social media.

Bryant’s death was felt particularly painfully in Los Angeles, where he was unquestionably the most popular athlete and one of the city’s most beloved public figures. Hundreds of fans — many in Bryant jerseys and Lakers gear — spontaneously gathered at Staples Center and in the surrounding LA Live entertainment complex, weeping and staring at video boards with Bryant’s image.

Among those killed were John Altobelli, head coach of Southern California’s Orange Coast College baseball team, his wife, Keri, and daughter, Alyssa, who played on the same team as Bryant’s daughter, said his brother, Tony, who is the sports information director at the school.

“Ït was very foggy so we couldn’t see anything,” he said.
