BANGKOK — 13 July 2026, A Japanese TikToker with around 600,000 followers has publicly apologised after staging a social experiment pickpocketing video on Bangkok’s Khao San Road that falsely portrayed a man involved in the video as a criminal, disrupting his employment and prompting criticism that the video damaged Thailand’s tourism image.

The video posed the question: “If you walk with your wallet sticking out of your pocket, will it be stolen?” It was initially presented as though the creator had fallen victim to pickpocketing before later revealing that the incident had been staged.

The channel owner later admitted asking a local man to pretend to remove a wallet from his pocket for the shoot in exchange for in-game items or money. However, the man was unaware that the footage would be edited and presented in a way that led viewers to believe he was an actual thief.

Family identifies skeleton as man missing for 10 days

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — 13 July 2026: Police are investigating the death of a 45-year-old man whose skeletal remains were found behind a village in Sikhiu district after he had been missing for about 10 days.

Officers from Sikhiu Police Station responded after villagers reported finding human skeletal remains in a wooded area behind Non Kum village, Moo 2, Mittraphap subdistrict. Rescue workers and relevant authorities were dispatched to examine the scene.

The deceased was identified as Khane Ngamphonkrang, 45. His body had decomposed, leaving skeletal remains along with clothing and personal belongings.

Relatives who arrived at the scene identified the remains based on the personal items found nearby, confirming they belonged to Khane, who had been reported missing since 30 June 2026.

The remains were sent to Sikhiu Hospital for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

A relative said Khane regularly went fishing and had searched for him every day after he disappeared. During the initial search, the family found his motorcycle parked near the area where the remains were later discovered but could not locate him.

The family continued searching until villagers reported finding skeletal remains. Upon arriving at the scene, they recognized Khane’s bag and personal belongings, confirming his identity.

Police said they are continuing their investigation and will await the autopsy results before determining the cause of death.

BANGKOK — 13 July 2026, Thai youth have once again made their mark on the international stage after a 12-year-old Thai boy won gold and silver medals in computer programming at the International STEM Olympiad – Grand Final Round in Rome, Italy, following an online preliminary stage that attracted more than 10,000 participants from around the world.

Nipun Skyz Lua, a Year 7 student, competed in the Grand Final held from 2–8 July in Rome, where 714 participants from 54 countries took part. The competition’s online preliminary stage attracted more than 10,000 participants from 150 countries.

Competing in two coding disciplines, Nipun secured medals in both events:
• Gold medal — Code Combat
• Silver medal — Code Mentum

Both competitions tested far more than coding proficiency, placing a strong emphasis on analytical thinking and problem-solving using the Python programming language under strict time limits.

In the Code Combat category, contestants were required to apply core programming concepts, including variables, conditional statements (if/else), loops and functions, to design efficient sets of instructions that enabled a computer to solve assigned challenges accurately and effectively.

The Code Mentum category presented even more advanced challenges, focusing on algorithm design and complex problem-solving. Competitors were required to develop the most accurate, efficient and fastest solutions to increasingly difficult programming tasks.

According to the competition’s award system, gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to top-performing contestants based on their results in each category, rather than representing first, second and third place overall.

Nipun’s achievement highlights that international coding competitions are designed not simply to assess how well students memorise programming languages, but to evaluate logical thinking, analytical ability and the capacity to translate ideas into instructions that computers can execute.

Winning one gold medal and one silver medal at the age of just 12 marks another significant achievement for Thailand and showcases the potential of Thai youth in science, technology and computer programming on the global stage.

Singer survives Lat Phrao beer bar fire, says emotional trauma overwhelming as two band members remain missing

A singer performing at the beer bar where a devastating fire claimed 27 lives has survived after leaving the stage moments before the blaze broke out, according to posts shared on social media.

The tragedy occurred at a beer bar in Bangkok’s Lat Phrao area, leaving 27 people dead. Among the survivors was Tik Chanachai, the lead singer who had been performing when the incident unfolded.

Facebook user Chakchai Phoksombat posted a series of updates following the fire, confirming that Tik had escaped safely but was in severe emotional distress.

“Tik is safe. Thank you to everyone for your concern. However, my phone and all of my belongings were destroyed in the fire. If anyone needs to contact me, please do so through this Facebook account, Chakchai Phoksombat. My mental state is really not okay right now,” the post said.

Another post added:

“Thank you for all the merit and good deeds that have protected him. He has arrived home safely. Tik was singing there when the fire happened. Anyone who cannot reach Tik can contact Benz instead. His phone and belongings were destroyed, but Tik is safe.”

A video shared after the incident showed Tik breaking down in tears, repeatedly saying, “It’s my fault.”

According to preliminary information, Tik had been performing on stage when he needed to use the restroom. He stepped off the stage and went to the men’s restroom at the rear of the venue moments before the fire erupted.

He was then able to escape through an emergency exit located near the restroom.

Meanwhile, two members of Thotsakan Band remain missing following the blaze, with authorities continuing search and rescue efforts.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams, who played at the World Cup, has died. He was 25.

His death was confirmed by Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture, in a statement on Saturday.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25,” McKenzie posted on X.

Adams helped South Africa reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

Typhoon Bavi hits eastern China after more than 2 million evacuated

BEIJING — 12 July 2026, Typhoon Bavi weakened to a severe tropical storm on Sunday after striking China’s eastern Zhejiang province, but continued to bring powerful winds and heavy rain after authorities evacuated more than 2 million people.

The storm first made landfall in Yuhuan, a coastal city administered by Taizhou, at about 23:20 on Saturday, with maximum sustained winds of around 144 kilometres per hour. It later made a second landfall in Yueqing, near Wenzhou.

Bavi’s rain bands stretched as far as 1,000 kilometres from end to end — roughly equivalent to the length of France — raising fears of widespread flooding and landslides as the slow-moving storm pushed inland.

Although Bavi weakened after reaching land, authorities warned that the enormous amount of moisture carried by the storm could produce several days of intense rainfall across eastern China.

More than 2.2 million people were evacuated in Zhejiang province, while over 180,000 were moved from vulnerable areas in neighbouring Fujian and more than 290,000 in Shanghai, according to official figures.

Schools, workplaces, tourist attractions and outdoor activities were suspended across affected areas. Hundreds of flights were cancelled at Shanghai’s Pudong and Hongqiao airports, while dozens of train and ferry services were also halted.

In Yueqing, strong winds uprooted more than 1,300 trees, while streets were flooded and emergency crews used heavy machinery to clear fallen branches and debris.

Bavi had previously strengthened into a super typhoon over the Pacific, with winds reaching around 290 kilometres per hour, before affecting the Northern Mariana Islands, Japan’s southern islands and Taiwan.

At least 134 people were injured in Taiwan, mainly in accidents involving wind-blown debris and slippery roads. The storm did not make landfall there but brought strong winds, heavy rain and widespread transport disruption.
