Pattaya Police Hunt for Chinese Men Who Failed Kidnapping Attempt

The Thai woman who escaped kidnapping by two Chinese men at a South Pattaya villa speaks with police outside her home at approximately 3 a.m. on August 22, 2025.

PATTAYA — Thai police are conducting a manhunt for two Chinese men who attempted to kidnap a Thai woman at a pool villa in the early hours of Friday, binding her with cable ties before she escaped and alerted authorities. The suspects remain at large after ramming a police motorcycle during their getaway.

Woman Escapes After Being Bound

Police Colonel Anek Srathongyoo, superintendent of Pattaya City Police Station, said officers responded to reports of an armed kidnapping at a two-story villa with a private pool in Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district at 3 a.m. on August 22.

The terrified victim told investigators that two Chinese men had threatened her at gunpoint, restrained her hands with cable ties, and locked her in a bedroom while waiting for her Chinese husband to return home.

“She managed to free herself, ran from the house in panic, and sought help from a neighbor who contacted police,” Col. Anek said.

Suspects Ram Police Motorcycle in Escape

When officers arrived at the scene, witnesses described seeing two Chinese suspects – one wearing a baseball cap and face mask – driving a white Toyota sedan with an unidentified license plate. The men spotted police and immediately attempted to flee the residential area. Officers positioned a motorcycle to block the villa’s exit, but the suspects showed no intention of stopping.

“They crashed into the patrol officer’s motorcycle, causing damage, and also struck a resident’s parked car before speeding away,” Col. Anek said. The officer was not seriously injured.

20-Kilometer Chase Ends in Escape

Police launched an immediate pursuit, setting up roadblocks based on the victim’s description of the suspects and their vehicle. The chase continued for more than 20 kilometers through Chonburi province.

“The suspects appeared familiar with local roads and used secluded routes to evade capture. They ultimately escaped via Huay Yai Road,” the superintendent said. Despite deploying multiple units to search the area, police were unable to locate the fugitives.

Conflicting Statements Complicate Investigation

A neighbor, whose identity was protected, confirmed the victim’s account: “The woman ran out asking for help, saying two Chinese men had tied her hands and intended to hold her for ransom. When police surrounded the area, the suspects rammed the officer’s motorcycle and fled in different directions.”

Police have taken both the Chinese husband and Thai wife in for detailed questioning, though Col. Anek noted their statements contained “conflicting and confusing” details. The exact motive remains unclear.

Debt or Business Dispute Suspected

Investigators are exploring several theories about the kidnappers’ motives, including debt problems, personal conflicts, or business disputes. The victim reported that the suspects told her not to be afraid and that “everything would be over” once her husband returned home.

“They assured her no one would get hurt, which suggests this wasn’t a random robbery,” Col. Anek explained. However, police have not ruled out theft as a possible motive.

The detective team is currently analyzing security camera footage from the area to track the suspects’ movements and identify their escape route.

“We are requesting time to thoroughly investigate this case,” Col. Anek said. “We will provide updates to the public as soon as new information becomes available.”

Lawyer Reveals Reasons Behind Thaksin’s Lese Majeste Acquittal

BANGKOK — A Thai court on Friday acquitted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of royal defamation charges in a case dating back nearly a decade, with his legal team citing flawed prosecution evidence and biased witnesses as key factors in the victory.

The Criminal Court dismissed lese majeste and Computer Crime Act charges against the 75-year-old billionaire politician stemming from a May 2015 interview he gave to South Korean media while in self-imposed exile.

Court Cites Insufficient Evidence

Winyat Chatmontree, Thaksin’s lead attorney, said on August 22 that judges ruled on multiple grounds, primarily the prosecution’s failure to meet the burden of proof required under Thai law.

“Judges applied principles of evidence evaluation and determined that Thaksin’s interview contained more content than what appeared in the video clip presented as evidence,” Winyat told reporters following the verdict.

In their ruling, judges conducted a detailed grammatical analysis of Thaksin’s statements, examining subject, verb and object structures using Oxford dictionary standards. They ultimately concluded the defendant’s remarks did not reference the monarchy, a critical element required for lese majeste convictions under Article 112.

The Credibility Gap Between Two Sides

The ruling highlighted the credibility gap between defense and prosecution witnesses. The court recognized the expertise of defense witnesses including Thongtong Chandrangsu, former Dean of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Law, and Wisanu Kruengam, former Deputy Prime Minister and renowned legal scholar.

In contrast, the defense successfully demonstrated that prosecution witnesses harbored bias against Thaksin. Evidence showed several had participated in anti-Thaksin rallies and expressed strong political opinions publicly.

“Some prosecution witnesses gave contradictory testimony and even fabricated words they claimed Thaksin had spoken to support their interpretation that his statements referenced individuals protected under Article 112,” Winyat explained.

No Concerns About Appeal

The case remained dormant for years because Thaksin lived in exile following the 2006 military coup that removed him from power. Legal proceedings could not advance without his physical presence in Thailand.

Thaksin returned to Thailand in August 2023 and was formally indicted last year. He was released on 500,000 baht ($13,000) bail with travel restrictions and passport confiscation.

When asked about potential prosecution appeals, Winyat expressed confidence in the verdict’s strength.

“Appeals are the prosecutor’s responsibility. They typically focus on legal interpretation issues. If prosecutors see grounds for appeal, that’s their prerogative, but I have no concerns,” he said.

Thaksin’s Reaction and Future Plans

Winyat described Thaksin’s emotional response to the acquittal: “When he heard the verdict, Thaksin smiled and thanked the legal team. He said he could now contribute fully to the nation’s benefit.”

The lawyer dismissed speculation that the acquittal might encourage Thaksin to flee before his September 9 court appearance on separate charges related to his hospital detention.

“Thaksin has confirmed he will definitely attend the September 9 hearing,” Winyat stated. “For those who persist in thinking Thaksin will flee or seek personal gain for his family, I won’t beg them to stop. But I ask society to use wisdom when listening to such individuals. The past has proven Thaksin didn’t flee and has fought his cases throughout.”

Since returning to Thailand, Thaksin has maintained a high public profile, traveling nationwide for appearances and making political observations that could potentially antagonize the conservative establishment responsible for his 2006 overthrow.

Nail Salon Reopens at Thai Petrol Station After Deadly Cambodian Strike

Ms. Nitchiya Thonglue, 34, serves customers at her nail salon located in Ban Phue PTT gas station in Kantharalak district, Sisaket province on August 21, 2025.

SI SA KETNearly a month after Cambodian shelling destroyed a 7-Eleven at a PTT gas station, a resilient nail salon owner has resumed operations, saying she fears losing revenue more than facing future bombs.

At the Ban Phue PTT gas station in Kantharalak district, Sisaket province, residents on August 21 were still visiting the site where a rocket struck on July 24, killing eight people and injuring dozens. The attack caused considerable damage to nearby buildings, yet a nail salon has reopened at the station.

The station remains a pilgrimage site where people view the rubble of the destroyed grocery store and lay white flowers in memory of the victims. Despite the somber atmosphere, local businesses are adapting and returning to normal.

Reporters found that just 20 meters from the blast site, several beauty service shops—including nail extensions, eyelash services, eyebrow tattoos, makeup and hair salons—remain operational.

Ms. Nitchiya Thonglue, 34, owner of a nail salon, said she was in her store during the blast and “was scared out of her pants.” She temporarily relocated to rented space in Kantharalak town, serving customers despite the inconvenience because she needed income for daily expenses.

She explained that closing the store caused considerable financial loss, and permanent relocation would be difficult given her substantial renovation investment. After power was restored to the station, she consulted customers who assured her they weren’t afraid to return, giving her confidence to reopen.

For safety and convenience, the salon currently operates by appointment only until the store is rebuilt, which should eventually restore foot traffic to the station.

The petrol station owner has supported affected tenants by waiving rental fees for three months or until full restoration, helping alleviate their hardship.

Around the gas station, locals and travelers still pass by to commemorate victims and show solidarity with business owners and residents determined to continue their lives despite the uncertain border situation.

Area residents say they want more than reconstruction or compensation—they want lasting peace, free from artillery fire or rocket attacks across the Cambodian border. They long for normal everyday life without further tragedy.

Thonglor Pet Hospital Eyes 100% Growth Through Tech Push

Thailand's pet market demonstrates strong fundamentals, with the industry expected to grow 7% annually through 2025.

BANGKOK — Thonglor Pet Hospital, Thailand’s leading veterinary chain, announced plans to double its revenue by 2029 through an ambitious digital transformation and expansion strategy targeting the country’s rapidly growing pet market.

The 31-year-old company is positioning itself as a “Smart Hospital” by integrating advanced technology and data analytics to enhance treatment outcomes and operational efficiency. CEO Dr. Kittika Chaisupattanakul said the strategy responds to Thailand’s booming pet industry, projected to reach 71 billion baht ($2.17 billion) in 2025.

Data-Driven Care Model

Central to the transformation is Thonglor’s “DATA Driven” initiative, which leverages three decades of treatment records to create personalized care plans for pets. The platform analyzes health histories, behaviors, and treatment outcomes to help veterinarians predict disease risks and develop proactive care strategies.

“The real challenge is creating ‘The Best Outcome’ in pet care, which requires combining experience, knowledge, and innovation,” Dr. Kittika said. “We’re using technology to provide more precise diagnosis and treatment, ensuring every pet receives optimal care.”

The Smart Hospital concept integrates technology throughout treatment processes, enabling real-time patient monitoring and improving diagnostic accuracy. This technological infrastructure supports the hospital’s goal of establishing Thailand’s first centralized pet data platform.

Aggressive Expansion Strategy

Thonglor operates 21 branches nationwide and one facility in Vietnam, with plans for continued domestic and international expansion through direct investment and joint ventures. The company will open a collaboration clinic at Thammasat University Hospital later this year, serving as a model facility for pet innovation.

The hospital is exploring further expansion into ASEAN markets to build a regional network meeting international standards. Management sees significant opportunities in urban markets where pet humanization trends are driving demand for premium veterinary services.

Market Fundamentals Support Growth

Thailand’s pet market demonstrates strong fundamentals, with the industry expected to grow 7% annually through 2025 and reach 123.9 billion baht ($3.79 billion) by 2030. Key growth drivers include urbanization and increasing pet humanization, where owners treat animals as family members requiring high-quality healthcare.

Cat ownership is rising particularly rapidly due to urban living constraints, while pet owners increasingly prioritize health and quality of life for their animals. This trend supports premium pricing for advanced medical services and specialized treatments.

Thonglor has upgraded specialized centers including ophthalmology, cardiology, neurology, and diagnostic radiology to mirror advancements in human hospitals. The company positions these capabilities as differentiators against new market entrants.

Strategic Partnerships Expand Reach

The hospital has formed strategic alliances across multiple sectors under its “Synergy for Best Outcome” framework. Partnerships include collaborations with Pruksa Real Estate for pet-friendly housing developments, Krungthai Card for enhanced customer benefits, and Dhipaya Insurance for streamlined pet insurance services.

A tourism partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Pattaya office promotes pet-friendly travel, while social initiatives with The Voice Foundation support abandoned animal care.

Competitive Positioning

Despite increasing competition from new market entrants, Thonglor leverages its extensive branch network, specialized expertise, and comprehensive service offerings. The hospital serves both direct patients and referrals from other veterinary facilities, positioning it as a regional hub for complex cases.

Management believes the combination of technological innovation, data analytics, and strategic partnerships will drive sustainable growth while maintaining market leadership in Thailand’s evolving pet healthcare sector.

The company’s ambitious revenue doubling target reflects confidence in both market growth potential and its ability to capture expanding demand through differentiated service delivery.

Russian Tourist Dies Saving Girlfriend from Phuket Waves

The search team discovers a Russian tourist's body, washed ashore near the location where he had disappeared in Phuket on August 21, 2025.

PHUKET — A romantic getaway to Phuket turned tragic for a Russian couple when powerful waves swept them out to sea during a midnight swim, with the man pushing his girlfriend to safety before drowning himself.

Rescue teams from the Phuket Charitable Diving Unit and Saku Subdistrict Administrative Organization established a special search operation for 35-year-old Denis early on August 21, after his 24-year-old Russian girlfriend Kamila reported that her boyfriend had disappeared in the waters between Banana Beach and Nai Thon Beach in Saku Subdistrict, Thalang District.

According to Kamila’s account, the couple entered the sea around 12:30 a.m. when large waves suddenly struck. In his final moments, Denis pushed her toward shore to safety, but he vanished beneath the waves. Initial rescue efforts were hampered by darkness and rough seas that prevented boats from launching.

At daybreak, search teams split into two groups: one deployed rubber boats to search offshore waters while the other combed rocky areas and the shoreline on foot. After hours of searching, authorities discovered Denis’s body at 3:00 p.m., washed ashore near the location where he had disappeared.

Police from Saku Station conducted preliminary examinations before coordinating with forensic doctors from Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy. Kamila confirmed the victim’s identity, and authorities have contacted the Russian Embassy before transferring the body to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination.

The incident highlights the dangers of swimming in Phuket’s waters during rough conditions, particularly at night when visibility is poor and rescue operations are severely limited.

Europe-to-Thailand Drug Pipeline Exposed in 4 Vietnamese Arrests

Prin Mekanant, Director of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, inspects pill-making equipment seized from Vietnamese drug trafficking suspects on August 18, 2025.

BANGKOK — Thai authorities have exposed an international drug trafficking pipeline stretching from Europe to Thailand, arresting four Vietnamese nationals who were operating a sophisticated manufacturing operation in Bangkok.

The network smuggled ketamine from the Netherlands through international postal services before processing it into ecstasy pills for distribution across Southeast Asia, according to Lieutenant General Phanurat Lukboon, Secretary-General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), who announced the results of the arrests on August 21.

The operation began on August 15 when ONCB, working with other agencies, including the Customs Department, intercepted 5.2 kilograms of ketamine hidden in international parcels disguised among snack packages from the Netherlands.

Surveillance Leads to Arrests

On August 18, officers conducted surveillance around the condominium listed as the package delivery address. In the evening, they observed two Vietnamese men arriving to collect the ketamine-containing parcels. Authorities moved in to arrest the suspects and subsequently raided a rented house in Ladprao, where two additional Vietnamese nationals were detained.

During searches, authorities discovered 514 ecstasy pills, ecstasy powder, an automated single-punch pill-pressing machine with various logo dies, and numerous pill-making equipment pieces, all seized as evidence.

Manufacturing Operation Uncovered

The suspects revealed they planned to mix the ketamine with MDMA to create ecstasy powder before pressing it into pills. Investigators found that current ecstasy production increasingly incorporates ketamine to enhance the drug’s effects. The network then distributed these pills through entertainment venues, with some believed to be smuggled back to Vietnam for sale.

ecstasy vietnam2
Prin Mekanant, Director of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, inspects pill-making equipment seized from Vietnamese drug trafficking suspects on August 18, 2025.

This intelligence aligns with information gathered during the 17th Thai-Vietnam Bilateral Meeting on Drug Prevention and Suppression Cooperation held in Hanoi in mid-August 2025, where authorities exchanged data including concerns about ecstasy trafficking.
Vietnamese Crackdown Shifts Operations

Lieutenant General Phanurat noted that Vietnamese drug dealers who primarily manufactured ecstasy have faced intensive crackdowns and arrests within Vietnam. Last year alone, Vietnamese authorities seized over 3 million methamphetamine and ecstasy pills combined. This enforcement pressure has led Vietnamese drug traffickers to shift operations to Thailand for both production and distribution.

International Supply Chain

Prin Mekanant, Director of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, explained that ecstasy originates from European sources while ketamine comes from the Golden Triangle region.

Vietnamese networks use automated pill-pressing machines capable of producing over 100,000 pills daily, targeting tourists and customers at entertainment venues across all demographics, not exclusively Vietnamese nationals.

ecstasy vietnam3
The Narcotics Suppression Bureau officers question one of the 4 Vietnamese drug trafficking suspects (second from left) on August 18, 2025.

Sophisticated Smuggling Methods

Authorities have identified that foreign drug trafficking networks operating in Thailand use the country as a transit point, ordering drugs from overseas and shipping them via international parcels. The drugs are concealed within various commercial products before being sent to Thailand.

Package recipients use foreign names and list condominiums as delivery addresses without specifying unit numbers, despite not actually residing there. Network members collect packages by showing passport photos on mobile phones to condominium management.

Regional Cooperation Intensifies

The ONCB maintains close cooperation with international agencies including Singapore, Vietnam, China, South Korea, Indonesia, and Malaysia to combat drug networks that use Thailand as a base or transit point. This information sharing and joint investigation approach has yielded concrete results in tracking and dismantling transnational criminal organizations.

The arrests highlight the evolving nature of international drug trafficking and the importance of regional cooperation in combating sophisticated smuggling operations that exploit legitimate postal and delivery systems.
