How Chinese FM Uses Yunnan Tea to Secure Peace Between Thailand and Cambodia

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, invites Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa to share in a tea gathering in Anning, southwest China's Yunnan Province, Aug. 14, 2025.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi invited Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn to a tea gathering in Anning in southwest China’s Yunnan Province on August 14, 2025.

The tea was aromatic, and as cups were raised in unison, the air remained harmonious. The talk on the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict was conducted in a friendly and candid manner.

How’s the Yunnan tea?

It tastes peaceful.

Anning, the meeting’s host city, implies “peace, harmony and amity” in Chinese.

In July, clashes erupted along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Thanks to efforts from China and the international community, a ceasefire agreement was reached.

During the tea gathering, Wang Yi remarked, “It’s better to resolve disputes than to prolong them.” He expressed hope that Thailand and Cambodia would jointly voice a “message of peace” in Anning. China supports both countries in rebuilding trust through dialogue and restoring normal cooperation.

The Thai and Cambodian foreign ministers expressed gratitude, emphasizing the value of peace and neighborly ties. They reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire and pledged to utilize dialogue mechanisms to resolve disputes peacefully.
Only by cherishing peace, can we step into a shared future.

How’s the Yunnan tea?

It tastes brotherly.

China and Mekong countries are inseparable neighbors and brothers.

When meeting Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Wang Yi highlighted the deepening “China-Thailand kinship” and the advancing practical cooperation.
When meeting Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, Wang Yi described  China and Cambodia as “ironclad friends” and an all-weather community with a shared future. They need to support and assist each other.

China and Mekong countries are close as brothers. The LMC, after a decade of cultivation, has flourished. The idea of “drinking from the same river and sharing a bright future” are well-accepted by folks in the region.

Over the past decade, China and the five Mekong countries have deepened strategic mutual trust, achieving the full coverage of bilateral communities with a shared future. Having established the overarching goal of building a Lancang-Mekong community with a shared future, the six countries become good neighbors, close friends and trusted partners for each other.

How’s the Yunnan tea?

It has a taste of growth.

Peace is the foundation for development.
Over the past decade, the Lancang-Mekong Economic Development Belt has taken off. Bilateral trade between China and the five Mekong countries has reached $437 billion, marking a 125% increase. Regional infrastructure has seen more connectivity in both physical and institutional terms, cooperation in industrial and supply chains  has been deepened, and the LMC innovation corridor has emerged as a new highlight of regional development.

During the 10 years, Wang added, the peoples of Lancang-Mekong countries have grown closer. The “Lancang-Mekong Visa” initiative has facilitated exchanges, while 991 “small yet smart” projects supported by the LMC Special Fund have benefited the peoples of all six countries. We have stood together in combating natural disasters and COVID-19, advanced law enforcement and security cooperation, and jointly fought transnational crimes to safeguard public health and regional stability.

In the future, the six countries should chart a clearer blueprint, demonstrate firmer resolve, and take more concrete actions to build the “LMC 2.0” — characterized by solidarity, open cooperation, green innovation, and enduring peace. Together, we will usher in a new golden decade for LMC and accelerate the building of a Lancang-Mekong community with a shared future dedicated to peace and prosperity, Wang noted.

“We will unite with unwavering commitment, replacing empty talk with bulldozer-like action to open a new chapter in the LMC cooperation. We will jointly built up our shared neighborhood of peace, security, prosperity, beauty and amity — making new and greater contributions to building a community with a shared future in our region.”

S Hotels and Resorts Posts Record Q2 Net Profit, Announces First-Ever Interim Dividend

Bangkok, Thailand – S Hotels and Resorts Public Company Limited (SET: SHR), a leading international hotel and resort management company under Singha Estate Public Company Limited (SET: S) announced the financial performance for 2025’s second quarter of 2025, reporting a net profit increased over 100% to THB 24 million.

This landmark announcement marks the first time that the company has reported a positive net profit for the second quarter, since this quarter falls during the low season for the company’s key hotel assets in Thailand and the Maldives and coincides with the transition period into the peak travel season for its hotels in Fiji and the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the first half of 2025 saw a net profit of THB 200 million, another all-time high. As a result, the Board of Directors Meeting approved the interim dividend payment of THB 0.015 per share with Ex-Dividend Date 26 August 2025, The Record Date 27 August 2025 and expected Payment Date of 10 September 2025.

image3 16

Mr. Michael Marshall, Chief Executive Officer, stated that the company achieved revenue from its hospitality business and other related services for the second quarter of 2025 in total THB 2,401 million-at the same level as the previous year, although there were impacts from Thai Baht appreciation and hotel closure for renovation and rebranding in UK. However, hotels in Thailand continued to deliver outstanding performance, with revenue increasing by 24% compared to the same period last year, particularly from SAii Laguna Phuket that achieved impressive results despite the low season. During the second quarter of 2025, SAii Laguna Phuket reported Average Daily Rate (ADR) at THB 6,800 per night. This increase of approximately 34% led to a significant improvement in Revenue per Available Room (RevPAR), which increased by more than double. In addition, Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh by The Unlimited Collection marked improvement since its first peak season following a brand enhancement, with RevPAR lifted around 10% YoY.

Aligned with the company asset rotation strategy, during the second quarter, SHR successfully completed its divestment in a subsidiary of a joint venture of 3 hotels in the UK which are Mercure Sheffield Parkway, Holiday Inn Darlington North and Holiday Inn Dumfries, total sale proceeds approximately GBP 12.5 million. The proceeds are used to repay debt and provide dividends and capital returns to shareholders.

Furthermore, the company has successfully refinanced its loan facility in the United Kingdom, achieving an interest rate reduction of up to 2-3% per year. This refinancing will help reduce financial burden, enhance competitiveness, and increase the company’s capacity for future investments.

For the first half performances of 2025, SHR reported revenue from hospitality business and other related services in total THB 5,023 million slightly lower than the previous year approximately 4%. Earnings before Interest Taxes Depreciation and Amortization reported at THB 1,324 million – an increase of approximately 2% YoY thanks to effective cost control. Furthermore, with a downward trend in interest rates, and the company’s ability to refinance high-cost debt with lower-cost loans, interest expenses have decreased significantly compared to the same period last year, The result is net profit for the first half of 2025 to nearly quadruple YoY, reaching THB 200 million, reflecting a strong growth momentum.

image2 20

For the second half of the year, the company anticipates continued growth in performance, driven mainly by its properties in Thailand, which can further enhance room rates, and hotels in the Maldives, which will grow in line with the tourism sector.

In addition to continuous efficient management, the company enrolled four hotels in Thailand under the SAii Hotels & Resorts and Santiburi brands into the GHA DISCOVERY loyalty programme in July 2025, operating under the name SAii DISCOVERY. This programme is part of the Global Hotel Alliance (GHA), which has over 30 million members worldwide.

The 2024 performance reflects SHR’s commitment to stable and sustainable growth. We are pleased to reward our shareholders’ trust with this year’s dividend payment. Looking ahead to 2025, we will continue to enhance our assets and elevate SAii Hotels & Resorts on the global stage, reinforcing our leadership in sustainable luxury tourism,” Mr. Marshall concluded.

Q&A: Disinformation Escalating Border Tensions, Thai Journalist Tells Cambodian Counterpart

Chan Thul Prak, a prominent Cambodian journalist and editor at KiriPost, a Cambodian media outlet, sent Khaosod English’s Pravit Rojanaphruk a few questions regarding fake news during the current Thai-Cambodia conflicts and more.

Here’s the Q&A:

Chan Thul Prak: What do you see as the most significant dangers of such widespread disinformation and fake news, both in the immediate context of the conflict and for the long-term relationship between Thailand and Cambodia?

Pravit: People, both in Thailand and Cambodia, will lack an accurate and realistic understanding of the Thai-Cambodia conflict if their understanding is based on numerous fake news. They will also likely hold unrealistic expectations and tend to unnecessarily demonise the other, as fake news tends to exaggerate the negative side of the orher.
Fake news is basically detrimental to Thai-Cambodia relations.

Chan Thul Prak: Beyond the immediate political or military implications, how might this “information war” affect people-to-people trust and understanding between the two nations?

Pravit: It basically corrodes trust between Thais and Cambodians. People-to-people trust is a major casualty of fake news, and many on both sides of the border will likely harbour mistrust if not hatred.

Chan Thul Prak: In your opinion, did the spread of disinformation contribute to, or perhaps even escalate, the actual hostilities on the ground?

Pravit: Absolutely. Fake news feeds the insatiable desire for ultra-nationalism. It creates greater expectations to punish and vilify the other, be it Thailand or Cambodia, and their people.

Chan Thul Prak: What role do you believe responsible journalism plays in countering disinformation during times of conflict, and what challenges did Thai journalists face in this regard?

Pravit: As much as possible, responsible journalists should not knowingly spread fake news. They should fact-check. Claims made by their own respective governments that seem suspicious or not credible should also be accompanied with a caveat saying that “we cannot be independently verified it as of press time.”

Thai journalists, and I assume their Cambodian counterparts are similar, are susceptible to ultra-nationalist ideology. Many perceive themselves to be on the same side as the Thai government, if not the Thai state and the military.

This means these media and journalists abdicate their indispensable check-and-balance role and become cheerleaders for the ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. This makes them even more susceptible to spreading fake news and wanting “the other side” or “the enemy” to appear evil and losing.

As the five-day undeclared war broke out, I wrote that Thais, and not just Thai journalists, should not simply and automatically believe the Thai government and/or the Thai state and military simply because they are Thai, because manipulating perception is an ugly and unacknowledged part of war, which includes information warfare and disinformation.

The press and people should not become pawns of our respective governments and suffer the consequences. I would like to convey the same message to my Cambodian colleagues and neighbours as well.

Chan Thul Prak: Looking ahead, what solutions do you envision for healing the distrust and animosity that has been fuelled by disinformation and for fostering a more accurate understanding between the people of Thailand and Cambodia?

Pravit: There is no panacea or silver bullet. Every sensible Cambodian and Thai should quickly recognise that we share 800 kilometres of a common border, that we cannot run away from one another, and it is counter-productive for both Thailand and Cambodia and their people to be each other’s enemy.

Sensible public figures, social media influencers, and journalists should point out that fake news, hate speech, and dehumanising speech and photos will only deepen the people-to-people conflict and make it harder to heal and normalise the ties.

Look at how bitter and traumatic things were during the Second World War, between France and Nazi Germany, and how they are good neighbours now, or Japan’s colonial adventure in Korea and Japan’s invasion of China, including the Rape of Nanking Incident, and how they do not have to wage war now and enjoy relatively normal relations.

In Korea, there is a disputed island called Dokdo Island, which is a group of islets in the Sea of Japan (also known as the East Sea), and is called Takeshima island in Japan. The dispute is far from resolved, yet both Korea and Japan did not wage war, spread fake news, or dehumanise one another on social media; instead, they have relatively normal diplomatic and trade relations.

Thailand and Cambodia are fighting for four tiny patches of land and a few small temple ruins. The price both nations are paying makes zero sense. It is a senseless war and I suspect it has more to do with the ruling political families in both nations, while ordinary people on both sides, particularly those along the border, are paying a heavy price, along with foot soldiers.

The sooner we Thais and Cambodians recognise this, and are not used as pawns to further fan ultra-nationalism, and instead demand realistic and sensible policies from our governments, the better chance we have to mend the broken ties between not just our two nations but our two peoples. We have to look beyond the next few months and ask ourselves what we would like to see three or five years from now.

Also, history school textbooks on should be re-examined to ensure they do not unnecessarily and unfairly vilify its neighbours.

Acme Worawat Partners with ACT Warriors to Donate 100-Million-Baht Demining Robots  to Thai Army

Mr. Worawat Narknawdee, a renowned businessman and investor also known as Acme, announced via his Facebook page ‘Acme Traderist – Worawat Narknawdee’ his plan to join forces with hundreds of thousands of ACT Warriors in the procurement and donation of the ‘DOK-ING MV-4 Remote Controlled Mine Clearance System’ from Croatia, valued at over 100 million baht, for aiding the Royal Thai Armed Forces in demining operations on the Thai-Cambodian border.

He also tagged the official Facebook page of the Royal Thai Army in the post, stating:

image3 1

“This initiative is not the procurement of weapons for warfare, but the prevention of casualties caused by landmines still present in many parts of Thailand. The ‘DOK-ING MV-4 Remote Controlled Mine Clearance System’ is a remotely operated demining robot capable of clearing at a speed of 3–5 km/h, controllable from a distance of up to 1,500 metres. It is resistant to explosions and harsh environmental conditions, with a service life of 10–15 years. Its dimensions are well-suited to Thailand’s geography, allowing continuous operation in high-risk areas and serving as a shield for soldiers engaged in dangerous frontline missions.”

image2

“Although the procurement involves complex procedures — including compliance with legal requirements, liaison with the Croatian manufacturer, verification of its use for military donation rather than for commercial purposes, coordination with the Royal Thai Army and security agencies, and the acquisition of import permits under the Arms Control Act — I and the ACT Warriors, as ordinary citizens, will make every possible effort to secure this equipment and deliver it to the Royal Thai Army.

The intention is to provide a tool for mine clearance that spares our personnel from risking their lives, and to restore those areas as ‘safe zones’ where Thais can resume their lives in peace and normality.” Mr. Acme Worawat further stated. There will be no public fundraising. Please be wary of anyone making such claims.”

Myanmar Will Start National Elections on December 28

BANGKOK (AP) — Myanmar will hold nationwide elections beginning Dec. 28, setting a date for polls that have been denounced as a sham to normalize the army’s 2021 seizure of power even as much of the country is wracked by civil war.

It is unclear how voting can take place when the military government is believed to control less than half the country, with the rest held by pro-democracy resistance fighters or ethnic minority rebels.

All of Myanmar’s 330 townships have been designated as constituencies for the election, the Union Election Commission said previously. Nearly 60 parties, including the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party, have registered to run, according to the commission.

The commission announced the start date Monday and said the elections will be conducted in phases and a full schedule will be released soon.

Several opposition organizations, including armed resistance groups, have said they will try to derail the election. The military government enacted an election law last month that carries a potential death penalty for anyone who opposes or disrupts the elections.

Critics have already said the military-planned election will be neither free nor fair because there is no free media and most of the leaders of Aung San Suu Kyi’s dissolved National League for Democracy party have been arrested.

The NLD won a landslide victory in the last election in 2020, but the military seized power in February 2021 before the party could begin its second five-year term.

Suu Kyi, 80, is serving prison sentences totaling 27 years after being convicted in a series of politically tainted prosecutions brought by the military.

The military justified its seizure of power by claiming massive fraud in the 2020 election, though there was no evidence of it. It has said an election was the primary goal of its takeover but had repeatedly pushed back the date.

The army takeover was met with widespread popular opposition, triggering armed resistance that intensified into a civil war.

The military lately has stepped up military activity, both on the ground and with airstrikes, to retake areas controlled by opposition forces, and airstrikes killing scores of civilians have been increasing.

Myanmar independent online media reported at least 24 deaths in the military’s bombing Sunday of a hospital in the town of Mawchi, in Kayah state, also known as Karenni. The town is a center for wolfram and tungsten mining.

The provisional government formed by resistance groups in the state disclosed a higher toll Monday on Facebook, saying 32 civilians were killed, five were injured and several were still missing.

On Thursday, at least 21 people were killed by an airstrike on the town of Mogok, the center of the Southeast Asian country’s gem-mining industry.

The army has not mentioned the strikes and usually says it only attacks legitimate targets of war, accusing the resistance forces of being terrorists.

Trump Begins Planning for Putin-Zelenskyy Meeting

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Monday he’s begun arrangements for a face-to-face meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss a pathway to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while affirming that the U.S. would back European security guarantees aimed at preventing Moscow from reinvading its neighbor once the current conflict ends.

Details of the security guarantees and Trump’s efforts to arrange peace talks were still evolving as an extended meeting among Trump, Zelenskyy and other European leaders wrapped up at the White House.

But as they emerged from their talks, the leaders expressed guarded optimism that Trump could be finding momentum in his quest to fulfill his campaign promise of ending the grinding war.

The “most important” outcome of the meeting was the “U.S. commitment to work with us on providing security guarantees,” French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters.

Trump said he would forge ahead with arrangements for a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin. He spoke by phone with Putin during Monday’s talks with Zelenskyy and the leaders of Britain, Finland, France, Germany and Italy as well as the president of the European Commission and head of NATO.

The developments come amid a significant measure of trepidation on the continent that Trump is pressing Ukraine to make concessions that will only further embolden Putin after the U.S. leader hosted the Russian president for an Alaska summit last week.

“I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” Trump said in a social media post. “After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself. Again, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.”

It was not clear if Putin has fully signed on to such talks.

Russia state news agency Tass cited Putin’s foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov saying Putin and Trump “spoke in favor” of continuing direct talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations. Ushakov said they also discussed “the idea of raising the level of the direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiations.”

Zelenskyy told reporters following the White House meeting that if Russia does “not demonstrate a will to meet, then we will ask the United States to act accordingly.”

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in an appearance on Fox News that “if Russia is not playing ball” on direct talks with Ukraine, “the United States plus Europe will do more when it comes to tariffs and sanctions” on Moscow.

Zelenskyy previously had said he wanted Russia to agree to a ceasefire before any meeting between himself and Putin, but he said Monday that if the Ukrainians started setting conditions, the Russians would do the same.

“That’s why I believe that we must meet without any conditions, and think about what development there can be of this path to the end of war,” Zelenskyy said.

Earlier, Trump said during talks with Zelenskyy and the European leaders that a potential ceasefire and who gets Ukrainian territory seized by Russia should be hashed out during a face-to-face meeting between the warring countries’ two leaders.

“We’re going to let the president go over and talk to the president and we’ll see how that works out,” Trump said.

That was a shift from comments Trump made soon after meeting Putin last week in which he appeared to tilt toward Putin’s demands that Ukraine make concessions over land seized by Russia, which now controls roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.

Questions about US and NATO involvement

Trump stopped short of committing U.S. troops to a collective effort to bolster Ukraine’s security. He said instead that there would be a “NATO-like” security presence and that all those details would be hashed out with EU leaders.

Zelenskyy said deep U.S. involvement in the emerging security guarantees is crucial.

“It is important that the United States make a clear signal, namely that they will be among the countries that will help to coordinate and also will participate in security guarantees for Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

Speaking Monday before the White House meetings took place, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova rejected the idea of a possible NATO peacekeeping force in Ukraine. She said such a scenario could lead to further escalation and “unpredictable consequences.”

Trump’s engagement with Zelenskyy had a strikingly different feel to their last Oval Office meeting in February. It was a disastrous moment that led to Trump abruptly ending talks with the Ukrainian delegation, and temporarily pausing some aid for Kyiv, after he and Vice President JD Vance complained that Zelenskyy had shown insufficient gratitude for U.S. military assistance.

At the start of Monday’s meeting, Zelenskyy presented a letter from his wife, Olena Zelenska, for Trump’s wife, Melania.

Zelenskyy faced criticism during his February meeting from a conservative journalist for appearing in the Oval Office in a long-sleeve T-shirt. This time he appeared in a dark jacket and buttoned shirt. Zelenskyy has said his typically less formal attire since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022 is to show solidarity with Ukrainian soldiers.

European leaders arrived in Washington looking to safeguard Ukraine and the continent from any widening aggression from Moscow.

Ahead of Monday’s meeting, Trump suggested that Ukraine could not regain Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, setting off an armed conflict that led to its broader 2022 invasion.

Zelenskyy in his own post late Sunday, responded, “We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably.” He said “peace must be lasting,” not as it was after Russia seized Crimea and part of the Donbas in eastern Ukraine eight years ago and “Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack.”

European heavyweights in Washington

European leaders suggested forging a temporary ceasefire is not off the table. Following his meeting with Putin on Friday, Trump dropped his demand for an immediate ceasefire and said he would look to secure a final peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine — a sudden shift to a position favored by Putin.

German and French leaders on Monday praised Trump for opening a path to peace, but they urged the U.S. president to push Russia for an immediate ceasefire.

“I would like to see a ceasefire from the next meeting, which should be a trilateral meeting,” said German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Trump, for his part, reiterated that a broader, war-ending peace agreement between the two countries is “very attainable,” but “all of us would obviously prefer the immediate ceasefire while we work on a lasting peace.”

Thailand Starts Testing Crypto-to-Cash Tourism Payment System

BANGKOK — Thailand began testing a pioneering digital payment system Monday that allows foreign tourists to convert cryptocurrency into Thai baht for everyday purchases, in what officials describe as the world’s first program of its kind.

The “TouristDigiPay” pilot program, launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, enables tourists to exchange digital assets for Thai baht and spend the converted money through e-money platforms at local businesses ranging from street food vendors to convenience stores.

“This is the world’s first model that doesn’t use crypto directly as a payment medium, but converts it to Thai baht for use through e-money,” Pichai said at the launch event. “It benefits small retailers because they can accept payments like normal transactions, unlike foreign systems that tie crypto to credit cards for use only at large stores.”

Targeting Small Businesses and Street Vendors

The system aims to reach everyday merchants including street food vendors and convenience stores, expanding beyond the large retailers typically served by crypto payment systems abroad.

The 18-month pilot program sets monthly spending limits of 500,000 baht ($15,400), with individual transactions capped at 100,000 baht ($3,080). Unlike overseas models, the system doesn’t require credit card integration.

Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Lavaron Sangsnit said the program could expand transaction limits beyond 550,000 baht ($16,940) monthly after the trial period, potentially enabling cryptocurrency purchases of high-value assets like real estate or luxury yachts, similar to systems used internationally.

Economic Impact Projections

Pichai estimated the program could generate significant economic benefits, with Thailand receiving approximately 35 million tourists annually. If the system increases average tourist spending by 5,000 baht ($154) per person and boosts overall expenditure by at least 10% through improved convenience, it could create additional economic activity worth roughly 175 billion baht ($5.39 billion).

“Developing the digital economy alongside tourism will create economic opportunities and attract more tourist spending in Thailand, while laying the foundation for the country’s full transition to the digital age,” Lavaron added.

Regulatory Framework and Security

The project represents collaboration between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Finance Ministry, Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), and Tourism and Sports Ministry.

SEC Secretary-General Pornanong Budsaratragoon explained that the system connects existing digital asset trading platforms under SEC supervision with electronic payment systems regulated by the Bank of Thailand.

The program implements Know Your Customer (KYC) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD) procedures according to AMLO standards. Monthly limits are set at 50,000 baht ($1,540) for small merchant payments and 500,000 baht ($15,400) for merchants verified through Know Your Merchant (KYM) processes.

Users can convert baht back to digital assets within the limits of their original crypto exchange amounts. Transaction fees follow rates set by participating digital asset operators under the sandbox framework.

Implementation Timeline

The SEC is currently updating relevant regulations and has opened pre-consultation sessions with businesses since early August 2025. The TouristDigiPay service is expected to begin operations in Q4 2025.

AMLO Secretary-General Thepsu Bavornchotidara confirmed robust verification processes, with KYC checks at the source and additional verification when converting baht back to digital assets.

Following the pilot period, the SEC will evaluate the program’s effectiveness to develop and expand the system based on user needs and feedback.

Thailand Raises 2025 GDP Growth Forecast to 2% Despite Economic Slowdown

BANGKOK — Thailand’s economic planning agency revised its 2025 GDP growth forecast upward to 2% on Monday, despite the economy showing signs of deceleration in the second quarter.

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) reported that Thailand’s gross domestic product grew 2.8% year-on-year in Q2 2025, down from 3.2% growth in the first quarter. Secretary-General Danucha Pichayanan attributed the slowdown primarily to weaker non-agricultural production, particularly in tourism-related services, though agricultural output continued expanding.

“The main factor was the slowdown in non-agricultural production, especially tourism-related services, while agricultural production continued to expand,” Danucha said during the announcement.

Danucha Pichayanan, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), announces Thailand’s economic report for Q2/2025 at the NESDC office on August 18, 2025.

The revised forecast represents an improvement from NESDC’s previous projection of 1.8% growth. The agency now expects GDP to grow between 1.8% and 2.3% for the full year, compared to 2.5% growth recorded in 2024.

Mixed Sectoral Performance

Agricultural production remained robust, growing 6.0% in Q2 following 6.2% expansion in the previous quarter. However, non-agricultural sectors slowed to 2.5% growth from 2.9% in Q1.

Manufacturing showed improvement, accelerating to 0.8% growth from 0.4% in the previous quarter, driven by faster industrial production and improvements in electricity, gas, and steam sectors. The services sector, meanwhile, weakened to 3.5% growth from 4.1%, hurt by slower activity in accommodation, food services, transportation, and construction.

On the expenditure side, investment surged 5.8%, up from 4.7% in Q1, led by private sector machinery and equipment purchases. Public investment rose 10.1%, though this was slower than the previous quarter’s 26.3% pace.

Economic Outlook

Looking ahead, NESDC expects inflation to remain subdued at 0.0-0.5% for 2025, while the current account is projected to maintain a surplus equivalent to 2.1% of GDP.

The seasonally adjusted quarterly growth rate slowed to 0.6% in Q2 from 0.7% in the previous quarter. At current prices, GDP reached 4.58 trillion baht, with gross national income totaling 4.39 trillion baht after accounting for net primary income payments abroad.
