Thailand to Revise US Tariff Deal Proposal After Inconclusive Talks

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira meets with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and the USTR team in Washington on July 3, 2025.

SEOUL — Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira summarized the results of his US tariff negotiation trip during a transit stop in South Korea on July 4, saying the meetings went well and provided valuable feedback, but no final agreement was reached, requiring continued work toward a mutually beneficial deal.

He stated that his delegation met with multiple parties throughout their time in the United States, including government policy-level officials and private companies with substantial long-term investments in Thailand.

The Finance Minister said this was an official policy-level meeting, with the first person he met being US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender, along with working-level officials.

“This meeting provided Thailand with very important feedback, giving the United States confidence that Thailand has been a long-term economic partner, and past cooperation has benefited both sides,” Pichai said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira meets with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce led by Charles Freeman, Senior Vice President for Asia, and senior representatives from leading US companies that invest and operate businesses in Thailand on July 1, 2025.

Another crucial aspect involved meeting with US agricultural sector representatives, which policymakers consider highly important. The delegation met with three groups to understand the concerns of stakeholders who influence policymakers’ decisions, factors the US will likely consider beyond just tariff rate submissions.

He said the negotiations helped understand senior officials’ thinking and deeper discussions revealed what they truly want beyond Thailand’s current understanding, which will inform future technical-level negotiations.

Pichai concluded that negotiations went well, with the US expressing gratitude for Thailand’s enthusiasm in participating. Thailand will take the feedback received to prepare additional new proposals for mutual benefit.

“I want to reaffirm that Thailand’s working group’s position is that any agreement reached must be sustainable and mutually beneficial – what we call a Win-Win Solution. While negotiations haven’t reached final results, we must continue working together to achieve maximum benefits for both countries,” he stated.

Moving forward, he and the working group will work harder to adjust Thailand’s proposed conditions for clarity and mutual benefit to reach a beneficial agreement.

President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause in global reciprocal tariffs is set to expire on July 9, when Thailand was originally scheduled to face 36% tax rates on imported products.

However, Trump said on Thursday that the United States will begin sending notification letters to countries starting Friday, detailing the tariff rates they will face on imports to America, effective August 1. This marks a departure from his earlier promises to negotiate numerous individual trade agreements.

“By the ninth, they’ll be fully covered. They’ll range in value from maybe 60% or 70% tariffs to 10% and 20% tariffs,” Trump told reporters, recognizing the complexity of dealing with over 170 nations.

The initial batch of 10 to 12 letters will be followed by additional rounds of notifications to inform countries about the tariff rates that will apply to their exports to the United States.

Chinese Man Caught Using Fraudulent Mexican Passport at Don Mueang

Don Mueang Airport police officers inspect a 39-year-old Chinese passenger who used a Mexican passport that was reported lost to Interpol on July 3, 2025.

BANGKOK — Immigration officers at Don Mueang Airport arrested a Chinese man using a fraudulent Mexican passport after becoming suspicious of the Asian-looking passenger carrying Mexican travel documents.

Immigration officials at Don Mueang Airport checkpoint revealed they received a report from departure immigration officers at approximately 3:10 p.m. on July 3 about a suspicious foreign male exhibiting Chinese characteristics but using a Mexican passport, prompting an investigation.

The inspection revealed that while the passport was genuinely issued by Mexican authorities, it had been reported lost in Interpol’s system and the personal information page had been altered with a different name.

When details in the passport matched Interpol’s alert information, immigration officers coordinated with the investigation team to conduct further examination, which revealed abnormal characteristics different from genuine passports:

1. UV light reaction: UV light inspection showed that light reflection differed from authentic passports, particularly the “E PASSPORT” text on the upper right of the bio data page of the fake document did not reflect light, while genuine text does not react to UV light.

2. Security features (MLi LASER IMAGE): Authentic passports require changing viewing angles when light hits the surface, making text and photographs visible at different times, while the fake version showed both image and text simultaneously, which is not the correct characteristic of MLi technology.

Further verification using the Biometric system identified the man as Mr. Jianwang, a 39-year-old Chinese national. He had entered Thailand using this Mexican passport on June 27, 2024, and was attempting to travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on AirAsia flight AK885.

The suspect initially denied all allegations. Authorities have transferred him along with the fraudulent passport as evidence to investigators at Don Mueang Police Station for legal proceedings.

He was charged with using a forged passport, which carries penalties of 1-10 years imprisonment and fines ranging from 20,000-200,000 baht ($620-6,200) if convicted.

Suspended PM Paetongtarn Puts Spotlight on Culture Ministry

BANGKOK — Thailand’s suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra began her new role as Culture Minister on Friday, not only bringing increased spotlight and importance to the ministry but also drawing attacks from opposition groups who have begun targeting her with fake news about the ministry.

Paetongtarn visited the Culture Ministry on the morning of July 4, paying respects to sacred objects at the ministry and the Thailand Cultural Center. She greeted ministry staff with a cheerful demeanor while outgoing Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol handed over responsibilities to her.

Culture Ministry Permanent Secretary Prasop Riangngen expressed his honor at having the Prime Minister serve concurrently as Culture Minister, marking only the second time in history that a PM has held both positions. The last was Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, who established the Culture Ministry nearly 70 years ago.

“The spotlight is now on the Culture Ministry, and our driving force will become increasingly important, whether it’s soft power or leveraging culture to promote the economy and social development,” Prasop said. “Civil servants welcome this and will jointly push forward not just traditional conservation and restoration work, but will create new initiatives with greater significance. I believe we will succeed in many areas in the near future.”

Boost Thai Cultural Soft Power

Paetongtarn acknowledged that while the Culture Ministry is often perceived as a small ministry, it actually plays a central role in promoting Thai culture that is beloved worldwide and has inherent value.

She expressed her desire to see the Culture Ministry grow and become as prominent as those in other countries, including South Korea.

“It may be unfortunate that I have to suspend my duties as Prime Minister, but I’m very happy to have the opportunity to work as Culture Minister for the first time as a cabinet minister,” she said. “So even though I can’t perform my duties as PM, I will fully carry out my responsibilities as Culture Minister. I want the Culture Ministry to be the driving force for new careers and opportunities for Thai people.”

She concluded on a lighter note, saying, “I’m entrusting myself to this ministry. If anyone knows good restaurants, please recommend them – I’ll definitely be eating many meals here.”

Ministry Is Targeted with Fake News

Paetongtarn was ordered to suspend her duty as Prime Minister by the Constitutional Court on July 1, pending an ethics investigation over accusations that she was too deferential to senior Cambodian leader Hun Sen when the two discussed a recent border dispute in a phone call that was leaked. The court gave her 15 days to give evidence to support her case.

Her assumption of the Culture Ministry position during this period also faces challenges, including intensified cultural conflicts between nationalist groups from both Thailand and Cambodia since the border dispute emerged.

She has also been targeted by opposition groups spreading fake news aimed at the Culture Ministry, such as claims that the Fine Arts Department returned 20 ancient artifacts to Cambodia and that Thailand risks losing three temples in disputed areas with Cambodia now that she has become Culture Minister.

Legal Action Against Misinformation Spreaders

Paetongtarn clarified that the decision to return 20 ancient artifacts to Cambodia was made by the previous Cabinet under PM Srettha on May 21, 2024, after experts confirmed the items originated in Cambodia. The process is currently stalled due to insufficient budget for transportation, and the ministry is seeking funding sources to proceed with the return.

She announced plans to file legal complaints against those spreading false information that damages her reputation, emphasizing that the artifact return decision was made before she became Culture Minister and that the ministry knows the circulating claims are untrue.

Asia Pacific Luxury Travel Trends Shift, New Report Shows

The Luxury Group by Marriott International launches ‘The Intentional Traveler’ report, unveiling evolving behaviors among high-net-worth travelers across seven markets

  • Wellness plays key role in destination choice, with 90% of travelers considering it a top booking priority
  • 72% of travelers plan to increase luxury travel spending
  • New destinations including Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Cambodia gaining ground on list of top 10 destinations
  • Nature escapes and countryside retreats surge, with interest in safaris up to 30%

SINGAPORE – A new era of luxury travel is taking shape across Asia Pacific, defined by purpose, personalization, and profound lifestyle shifts. According to a new study from the Luxury Group by Marriott International, high-net-worth (HNW) travelers in the region are recalibrating how, where, and why they travel – prioritizing wellbeing, immersive experiences, emotional value, and intentional design over volume and extravagance.

image4 6

The new report surveyed 1,750 of Asia Pacific’s most affluent travelers across Australia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, and Thailand, revealing a luxury travel mindset marked by deeper cultural engagement, increased precision in itinerary planning, and rising expectations from brands and experiences.

“Luxury travelers are now more intentional than ever before,” says Oriol Montal, Regional Vice President, Luxury, Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International. “They are seeking journeys that align with their values, enhance wellbeing, and deliver deep personal meaning. For Marriott International, this represents an opportunity to evolve luxury hospitality into something more transformational, curated, and emotionally resonant.”

Wellness Takes Center Stage

Wellbeing has become a cornerstone of luxury travel. In 2025, 90% of travelers cite wellness experiences as a key factor in their booking decisions, up from 80% the year prior. Beyond traditional spa retreats, luxury travelers are embracing holistic wellness experiences – from forest immersions and nutrition programs to sound healing and sleep therapies.

Asia is the top destination for wellness journeys (67%), where 26% of travelers are planning a dedicated wellness or spa retreat.

image3 9

Spending More, Expecting More

Luxury travelers are approaching their journeys with both confidence and discernment, as 72% plan to increase their spending on high-end travel in the coming year. This growth is led by travelers in Australia (85%), Indonesia (81%), and Singapore (80%), who are showing the strongest intent to invest more in premium experiences. Among all travel types, family travel stands out as the top priority for spending, with 47% of affluent travelers most willing to splurge when journeying with their immediate families.

Brand trust is also on the rise – recognized luxury hotel brands now rank higher than independent villas or private retreats, reflecting a desire for consistency, curated experiences, and elevated service.

A Return to Familiarity – Plus a New Luxury Trail

A striking 93% of high-net-worth travelers in the region prefer to return to destinations they already love, with 89% saying they’re more likely to revisit places where they feel a meaningful connection. These aren’t just repeat trips – they’re purposeful returns, often planned to delve deeper into a destination, reconnect with local communities, or relive special moments with family and friends.

At the same time, while many HNW travelers continue to favor familiar destinations, new markets with convenient regional access are rapidly gaining traction: Bangladesh (26%), New Zealand (24%), and Cambodia (23%) are emerging as top choices for 2025, rising alongside established travel favorites such as Australia, Japan, and Mainland China to secure spots in the year’s top 10 most planned destinations.

image6 1

The Rise of the Intentional Itinerary

Today’s luxury travelers are booking fewer trips but with greater depth and deliberation. The average short stay has increased from 3 to 4 nights, and itineraries are meticulously planned, often months in advance. For longer trips, bookings are typically made 2-3 months ahead, while short trips are locked in 1-2 months in advance. 93% expect a personalized travel experience, while 62% plan every detail ahead of time.

Nature is an Emerging Travel Priority

While gastronomy remains the top driver of travel, nature-driven experiences are now an emerging pillar of luxury travel. Countryside getaways are gaining momentum, with 28% of high-net-worth travelers planning rural escapes – up from 19% last year – while 30% are booking wildlife safaris. A remarkable 92% say being close to nature is a key travel priority, reflecting a growing desire for immersive, outdoor experiences. Further, these travelers are planners at heart, with the majority booking their long trips 2 to 6 months in advance, with some booking as far as 9 to 12 months out.

Changing Travel Dynamics: Who We Travel With

HNW travelers are redefining traditional travel groups, as new dynamics emerge.

1) Guardian Trailsetters

Once a niche category, solo parents traveling with their kid(s) has grown from 15% to 24% in just a year. When traveling as a solo parent, they show a preference for enriching itineraries that offer invaluable experiences for their children, including religious events (41%), educational trips (38%), and safaris or extreme adventures (both at 35%).

2) Impact Explorers

Gen Z travelers are gravitating toward destinations like Australia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand – choices that reflect their strong appetite for nature, culture, and adventure. Far from the leisure-seeker stereotype, this generation is driven by purposeful, active experiences: 47% prioritize being close to nature, 45% are eager to encounter wildlife, and 43% are drawn to active sporting holidays. Solo travel appeals to 31% as a means of independence and self-discovery, though small group trips of fewer than five people remain their preferred way to explore.

3) Venture Travelist

First introduced in the 2024 New Luxe Landscapes report, the Venture Travelist segment has seen significant growth in 2025. 86% of HNW travelers now say they explore business or investment opportunities while traveling – up from 69% the previous year.

image5 3

Thailand Sees Growth in Bleisure Travel

For Thailand, Thai travelers are planning fewer leisure trips than the regional average, with 5 domestic and 3 international trips compared to the regional norm of 6 and 4, respectively. However, “bleisure” travel—a blend of business and leisure—is gaining traction in Thailand, with 90% of international trips and 95% of domestic trips incorporating both purposes.

Extended family travel continues to rise, now accounting for 40% of trips—significantly higher than in neighboring markets. Popular holiday types among Thai travelers include cultural and entertainment experiences (36%), countryside retreats (32%), and sabbaticals (32%), alongside regionally favored options like short city breaks and beach getaways.

Off-the-beaten-path Destinations Rising in Appeal among Thai HNW Travelers

While domestic tourism remains strong, popular international destinations for Thai travelers include Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong, China. Looking ahead to next year, Bangladesh and Brunei are as strong contenders to break into the top five most popular choices, reflecting a growing interest in off-the-beaten-path locations among affluent Thai travelers.

image1 12

Thai Luxury Travelers Expect Tailored Experiences

Thai luxury travelers, with a staggering 97%, desire every detail to be tailored to their specific needs. While 60% prefer large luxury hotels, a significant 41% enjoy planning their own trips but still anticipate a personalized touch. Dining is a top priority for these travelers. 60% consider fine dining their ideal night out, and 39% are willing to pay for a Michelin-starred experience. When it comes to making travel decisions, good reviews (57%), awards (51%), and exclusive experiences (51%) are the most influential factors.

Health and Sustainability: Non-Negotiable Priorities for Thai Luxury Travelers

For Thai travelers, health and sustainability are non-negotiable. They expect a diverse range of dining options (98%), comprehensive wellness offerings (97%), and environmentally responsible practices in luxury hotels (97%). Swimming pools and sleep programs are viewed as the most valuable amenities (96%), and 62% are likely to book a spa treatment during their trip.

Chinese Trio Arrested in Thailand Claim They Escaped Poipet Scammers

chinese
Thailand's Burapha Force soldiers arrest three Chinese men illegally crossing the border on foot near Ban Khok Sabaeng village, Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, on July 4, 2025.

SA KAEO — Three Chinese men carrying six mobile phones who were arrested by Thai Eastern Command forces early Friday morning, claimed they had fled scam operations in Cambodia’s Poipet. Investigators remain skeptical of their claims due to inconsistencies in their testimony and the suspicious number of phones in their possession.

Thai Army’s Burapha forces arrested three Chinese men aged 20, 21, and 29 while they were illegally crossing the border on foot into Thailand near Ban Khok Sabaeng village in Tha Kham subdistrict, Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, around 2 a.m. on Friday.

The trio carried no identification documents but possessed six mobile phones. They claimed they traveled from Yunnan Province, China, through Myanmar before illegally entering Thailand. They alleged that an unidentified Thai person drove them to cross into Poipet, Cambodia for work, but upon arrival, they discovered they had been deceived into working for scammers and decided to escape.

chinese poipet2
Thailand’s Burapha Force soldiers arrest three Chinese men illegally crossing the border on foot near Ban Khok Sabaeng village, Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, on July 4, 2025.

However, authorities remain skeptical of their testimony. When questioned about crucial details such as company names, travel expenses, or the nature of work initially agreed upon, all three claimed ignorance, stating that everything was arranged for them. This contradicts their earlier claim that the “work didn’t match the agreement.”

This suspicious inconsistency, combined with the unusually high number of mobile phones—key tools used in call center scam operations—has led officials to question whether they are truly victims or possibly operational members of scamming networks attempting to infiltrate Thailand.

The three suspects have been transferred to investigators at Khlong Luek Police Station for detailed interrogation and verification of their entire cross-border travel route. Authorities expect to potentially expand the investigation to expose larger networks involved in these operations.

Can Thai Acting PM Dissolve Parliament? Legal Expert Clarifies

BANGKOK — Thailand’s political situation remains turbulent following a cabinet reshuffle that saw Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai assume the role of acting prime minister. Opposition parties have been pressing him to exercise powers to dissolve parliament amid the ongoing political uncertainty.

The political upheaval stems from Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s suspension by the Constitutional Court, which triggered the cabinet reorganization and intensified calls from opposition lawmakers for parliamentary dissolution.

The situation has raised complex constitutional questions about the extent of an acting prime minister’s authority during this transitional period.

Acting PM Denies Government Instability

When questioned by reporters about the acting prime minister’s power to dissolve parliament, Phumtham stated that no concrete discussions had taken place on the matter. He emphasized his commitment to maintaining governmental operations and firmly denied that recent events demonstrated instability within the administration.

The acting prime minister’s cautious response reflects the delicate constitutional terrain he must navigate while serving in an interim capacity during this period of political transition.

Legal Expert Weighs In on Constitutional Powers

Narinpong Jinaphak, President of the Lawyers Association of Thailand, provided crucial clarification on Thai constitutional law during this time of political transition. His detailed legal analysis, posted on the association’s Facebook page, addressed three key constitutional questions arising from the current situation.

Suspended PM’s Ministerial Role Remains Intact

Regarding whether the suspended prime minister can continue serving as Minister of Culture, Narinpong confirmed this is permissible. He explained that the Constitutional Court’s suspension order represents an interim protective measure under Article 170, paragraph 3, in conjunction with Article 82, paragraph 2 of the Constitution.

Critically, the court has not ruled that the prime minister has ceased to hold ministerial office under the relevant constitutional provisions. Therefore, the suspended prime minister retains qualification for the Culture Ministry position and may continue performing those specific duties.

Acting PM Can Lead Cabinet Swearing-In

The legal expert also clarified that Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, as the most senior minister and current acting prime minister, possesses the authority to lead the new cabinet’s swearing-in ceremony before the king.

Narinpong emphasized that the prime minister’s role in this context is ceremonial – simply leading new ministers to their audience with the king for oath-taking. Since each minister must individually recite the prescribed oath under Section 161 of the Constitution, and previously sworn ministers need not repeat the process, the acting prime minister can legitimately conduct this ceremony.

Parliamentary Dissolution

On the most pressing question of parliamentary dissolution, Narinpong provided definitive clarification. He stressed that dissolving parliament is not within the prime minister’s direct power but remains a royal prerogative, as explicitly stated in Section 103 of the Constitution: “The King has the prerogative to dissolve the House of Representatives.”

parliament2025 1
House representatives attend the first ordinary parliamentary session of 2025 at Suriyan Sappayasaphasathan Hall, July 3, 2025.

The prime minister’s role is limited to advising the king on dissolution or making a formal motion. This advisory function constitutes part of the prime minister’s regular duties rather than an exclusive personal qualification, distinguishing it from powers like appointing or dismissing ministers, which are personal prerogatives of the prime minister.

Crucially, Narinpong noted that while an acting prime minister may advise on or motion for parliamentary dissolution, the Constitution does not obligate the king to follow such advice. Parliamentary dissolution ultimately remains at the monarch’s discretion, who can exercise royal judgment regarding its appropriateness.

This constitutional framework means that even if opposition pressure succeeds in prompting the acting prime minister to request dissolution, the final decision rests entirely with the monarchy, adding another layer of complexity to Thailand’s current political dynamics.

Thailand Expects Tourism Boost from Jurassic World Rebirth

BANGKOK — The Thai Department of Tourism hopes the global release of Jurassic World Rebirth will boost tourism in Thailand after the film employed more than 2,245 Thai workers and featured stunning locations in three southern provinces including Krabi, Phang Nga and Trang.

Jurassic World Rebirth had its world premiere in both London and New York, but what makes the film so special to Thai audiences is that it was shot primarily in Thailand. The country was already in the spotlight as the filming location for The White Lotus Season 3, which premiered on streaming platforms in April.

Chatuporn Pakdeewanich, director-general of the department of Tourism, said that this major Hollywood production chose Thailand for its breathtaking landscapes and invested over 400 million baht ($12.2 million) in the local economy. It is one of the highest-budget foreign films ever shot in Thailand.

Beyond promoting Thailand’s image through cinema, the production created jobs for more than 2,245 Thais — from behind-the-scenes crew and production staff to service providers in local areas — delivering economic benefits from the grassroots level up to the national scale.

This achievement in attracting a major international film production is credited not only to Thailand’s natural beauty and skilled local crews, but also to the country’s incentive measures. These policies offer financial rebates to foreign film productions choosing to shoot in Thailand, a key strategy by the Department of Tourism to stimulate the film industry alongside tourism, ultimately benefiting the Thai people.

Thailand Film Office (TFO) has also promoted movie fans to follow in the footsteps of “Jurassic World Rebirth,” which brought a Hollywood production team to establish their filming base in Thailand. They created spectacular scenes amidst the beautiful nature of 3 southern provinces: Krabi, Trang, and Phang-Nga, with an investment of over 400 million baht.

The filming took place during June-July 2024, with 2,245 Thai crew members participating as part of this movie production, creating jobs and vigorously stimulating the local economy. After Jurassic World Rebirth was released in theaters worldwide on July 2, TFO invited movie fans to experience the filming locations from this movie, including:

Krabi: A province full of the charm of limestone mountains and azure seas, serving as one of the main locations chosen for filming at various spots, including:

  • Ban Ba Kan, Ao Luek District: A village surrounded by peaceful nature
  • Huai To Waterfall, Khao Phanom Bencha National Park: The lush freshness of waterfalls in the forest, scenes full of mystery and adventure
  • Khlong Root: The crystal-clear water in the canal was used to create beautiful scenes
  • Railay Beach: A world-famous beach renowned for the beauty of its limestone cliffs,
  • used as a magnificent opening scene
  • Palm Plantation, Khao Kram: Vast palm fields that became spectacular scenes of dinosaur herds
  • Nai Mueang, Thap Prik: A unique area transformed into thrilling scenes
  • Tham Toh Luang, Ao Luek: The wonder of limestone caves that may hide certain secrets
  • Khao Khanab Nam: The symbol of Krabi Province standing majestically in the water
  • Khao Ngon Nak: A spectacular viewpoint revealing the panoramic view of the vast Andaman Sea

Thai Authorities Approve Water Monitor Breeding Permits

Water monitors that inhabit the ponds at Phitsanulok University have become a familiar sight for students.

BANGKOK — Thai authorities have authorized commercial breeding of Asian water monitors and set breeding stock prices at 500 baht ($15.5) each as the reptile population increases dramatically in urban areas.

Atthapon Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, announced on July 3 that the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Committee had addressed the growing water monitor population during its first meeting of 2025 on July 2.

“The significant increase in water monitor numbers has become a major concern discussed at the meeting,” Atthapon said. Water monitors are protected wildlife, making it illegal to possess, kill, or trade them, with violations punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment and fines up to 1 million baht ($30,885).

However, recent legal amendments now permit water monitor breeding for commercial purposes, provided operators obtain permits from the Department of National Parks. The department conducts thorough inspections of applicants’ facilities, including cages, locations, and surrounding environments.

A water monitor that inhabits the ponds at Phitsanulok University has become a familiar sight for students.

Following the authorization of water monitor breeding, the committee has set the price for breeding stock at 500 baht ($15.5) per animal, available from wildlife breeding stations operated by the Department of National Parks nationwide.

“I want to emphasize that anyone wishing to purchase water monitors for breeding must first obtain permission from the Department of National Parks,” Atthapon stressed.

The committee had previously established prices for other wildlife species available as breeding stock for commercial purposes, including wild deer at 30,000 baht ($926.5) each, silver pheasants at 2,000 baht ($62), reticulated pythons at 400 baht ($12.3), cobras at 200 baht ($6.1), and Burmese pythons at 500 baht ($15.5).

Water monitors represent the latest species for which the committee has set breeding stock prices at 500 baht each.

Prepare Monitor Lizard Breeding Program

Chalem Pummai, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Office at the Department of National Parks, provided additional details on the upcoming monitor lizard breeding initiative. He explained that commercial breeding of monitor lizards can only begin after the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Committee’s pricing resolution is officially published in the Royal Gazette.

The program will commence at the Khao Son Wildlife Breeding Station in Ratchaburi Province, which currently houses 290 monitor lizards under care. These animals were captured following public complaints about nuisance issues in various areas, and releasing them back into the wild could potentially recreate the same problems.

New Economic Opportunity for Farmers

The introduction of monitor lizards as a new economic animal species is expected to generate income for farmers and entrepreneurs nationwide. The primary commercial use will likely focus on processing the animals’ hides into various products.

Chalem emphasized that the breeding program will not impact wild monitor lizard populations due to strict regulatory measures. All breeding stock will be implanted with microchips, and operators must report to the department whenever offspring are produced.

Legal Protections Remain in Place

The director warned that anyone caught illegally capturing wild monitor lizards or keeping them without proper permits will face legal consequences. He stressed that monitor lizards retain their protected species status, though they can now be legally bred under the new regulations.

The comprehensive tracking system aims to prevent illegal harvesting from wild populations while allowing legitimate commercial breeding operations to develop this new agricultural sector.

MADRID (AP) — Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother have died in a car accident in Spain, police said Thursday.

The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed to The Associated Press that Jota and his brother were found dead after their car went off a road near the western city of Zamora. Authorities said the car — a Lamborghini, according to police — was in flames.

Firefighters were called in as the fire spread into the nearby vegetation, authorities said.

Police were investigating the causes of the accident that happened past midnight local time. They said there were no other vehicles involved. The bodies were undergoing forensic analysis.

The 28-year-old Jota and his brother, 25-year-old André Silva, both Portuguese players, were in the car.

Jota’s death comes weeks after he married Rute Cardoso and in a social media post wrote, “Yes to forever.” They had three children, the youngest born last year.

Jota also played for Portugal’s national team and helped it win the Nations League last month.

Silva played with Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions.

Liverpool said the club was “devastated by the tragic passing.”

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and won three major trophies with the Merseyside club — including the Premier League title last season.

The Portuguese soccer federation released a statement lamenting the deaths. Federation president Pedro Proença said Portuguese soccer was “completely devastated.”

“More than a fantastic player, with almost 50 appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his colleagues and opponents. He had a contagious joy and was a reference in his community,” Proença said in the statement.

The Portuguese federation said it has requested a minute of silence before Thursday’s match between Portugal and Spain at the Women’s European Championship being played in Switzerland.

“We lost two champions,” Proença said. “Their deaths represent an irreparable loss for Portuguese soccer and we will all do our best to honor their legacy daily.”

Portugal’s Prime Minister Luís Montenegro commented on the “unexpected and tragic” deaths. He said Jota was “an athlete who greatly honored Portugal’s name.”

“I extend my deepest condolences to their family,” he said. “It is a sad day for soccer and for national and international sports.”

Reaction also started pouring in from across the soccer world.

Former club Porto and former teammates lamented the deaths and sent condolences.

UEFA said its thoughts were with relatives, friends and teammates affected “by this heartbreaking loss.”
