Trump Signs Order Imposing New Tariffs on US partners to Go into Effect in 7 Days

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order that set new tariffs on a wide swath of U.S. trading partners to go into effect on Aug. 7 — the next step in his trade agenda that will test the global economy and sturdiness of American alliances built up over decades.

The order was issued shortly after 7 p.m. on Thursday. It came after a flurry of tariff-related activity in the last several days, as the White House announced agreements with various nations and blocs ahead of the president’s self-imposed Friday deadline. The tariffs are being implemented at a later date in order for the rates schedule to be harmonized, according to a senior administration official who spoke to reporters on a call on the condition of anonymity.

After initially threatening the African nation of Lesotho with a 50% tariff, the country’s goods will now be taxed at 15%. Taiwan will have tariffs set at 20%, Pakistan at 19% and Israel, Iceland, Norway, Fiji, Ghana, Guyana and Ecuador among the countries with imported goods taxed at 15%. Switzerland would be tariffed at 39%.

Trump had announced a 50% tariff on goods from Brazil, but the order was only 10% as the other 40% were part of a separate measure approved by Trump on Wednesday.

The order capped off a hectic Thursday as nations sought to continue negotiating with Trump. It set the rates for 68 countries and the 27-member European Union, with a baseline 10% rate to be charged on countries not listed in the order. The senior administration official said the rates were based on trade imbalance with the U.S. and regional economic profiles.

On Thursday morning, Trump engaged in a phone conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on trade. As a result of the conversation, the U.S. president said he would enter into a 90-day negotiating period with Mexico, one of the nation’s largest trading partners. The current 25% tariff rates are staying in place, down from the 30% he had threatened earlier.

“We avoided the tariff increase announced for tomorrow and we got 90 days to build a long-term agreement through dialogue,” Sheinbaum wrote on X after a call with Trump that he referred to as “very successful” in terms of the leaders getting to know each other better.

The unknowns created a sense of drama that has defined Trump’s rollout of tariffs over several months. However, the one consistency is his desire to levy the import taxes that most economists say will ultimately be borne to some degree by U.S. consumers and businesses.

“We have made a few deals today that are excellent deals for the country,” Trump told reporters on Thursday afternoon, without detailing the terms of those agreements or the nations involved. The senior administration official declined to reveal the nations that have new deals during the call with reporters.

Trump said that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had called ahead of 35% tariffs being imposed on many of his nation’s goods, but “we haven’t spoken to Canada today.” Trump separately on Thursday amended a previous order to raise the fentanyl-related tariff on Canada from 25% to 35%.

Trump imposed the Friday deadline after his previous “Liberation Day” tariffs in April resulted in a stock market panic. His unusually high tariff rates, unveiled in April, led to recession fears — prompting Trump to impose a 90-day negotiating period. When he was unable to create enough trade deals with other countries, he extended the timeline and sent out letters to world leaders that simply listed rates, prompting a slew of hasty deals.

Trump reached a deal with South Korea on Wednesday, and earlier with the European Union, Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. His commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, said on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” that there were agreements with Cambodia and Thailand after they had agreed to a ceasefire to their border conflict. They will be tariffed at 19%.

Going into Thursday, wealthy Switzerland and Norway were still uncertain about their tariff rates. EU officials were waiting to complete a crucial document outlining how the framework to tax imported autos and other goods from the 27-member state bloc would operate. Trump had announced a deal on Sunday while he was in Scotland.

Trump said as part of the agreement with Mexico that goods imported into the U.S. would continue to face a 25% tariff that he has ostensibly linked to fentanyl trafficking. He said autos would face a 25% tariff, while copper, aluminum and steel would be taxed at 50% during the negotiating period.

He said Mexico would end its “Non Tariff Trade Barriers,” but he didn’t provide specifics.

Some goods continue to be protected from the tariffs by the 2020 U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, which Trump negotiated during his first term.

But Trump appeared to have soured on that deal, which is up for renegotiation next year. One of his first significant moves as president was to impose tariffs on goods from both Mexico and Canada earlier this year.

U.S. Census Bureau figures show that the U.S. ran a $171.5 billion trade deficit with Mexico last year. That means the U.S. bought more goods from Mexico than it sold to the country.

The imbalance with Mexico has grown in the aftermath of the USMCA, as it was only $63.3 billion in 2016, the year before Trump started his first term in office.

Thai-Cambodia Border Tensions Devastate Tourism Industry

TAT Trat Office is promoting that tourists can still visit Trat Province, including all three islands - Koh Chang, Koh Mak, and Koh Kood - as they are not located in any combat zones.

BANGKOK — Thailand’s tourism sector faces severe disruption as border tensions with Cambodia continue to escalate, with 100% booking cancellations reported in several provinces.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaiboon revealed that border tensions since early May 2025 have severely impacted domestic tourism, with travelers avoiding trips due to safety concerns.

Sa Kaeo province saw 100% cancellation of accommodation bookings in Aranyaprathet district, with 80% cancellations in city areas. Chanthaburi and border areas of Trat province experienced similar 80-100% cancellation rates. Island destinations also suffered: Koh Chang (10-30% cancellations), Koh Mak (20-30%), and Koh Kood (50-60%).

Northeastern provinces bore the brunt of cancellations. Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, and Surin provinces all reported 100% group tour cancellations, while Buriram saw 70% accommodation cancellations. Major attractions including Phanom Rung Historical Park closed, and events at Chang International Circuit were postponed.

The road in front of the Thai-Cambodia border checkpoint stands empty and quiet after Thailand implemented relaxation measures allowing cross-border vehicle movement for 5 days, but Cambodia continues to reject the proposal, July 21, 2025.

The crisis extends beyond border regions. Thianprasit Chaiphatranant, President of the Thai Hotels Association, reported that 24 member hotels across nine provinces lost 5,266 room bookings since July 23rd. Chiang Mai suffered the highest cancellations (2,089 rooms), followed by Bangkok (1,863 rooms) and Chonburi (668 rooms).

Asian tourists accounted for 47% of cancellations, Thai tourists 35%, Europeans 11.8%, and Middle Eastern visitors 5.8%. “Border provinces face greater impact than others. We hope the unrest resolves quickly to minimize tourism damage,” Thianprasit said.

TAT offices have issued danger zone advisories and established tourist assistance centers with special safety measures coordinated by government agencies and the Royal Thai Army.

Foreign Minister: Thailand Has Diplomatic Edge Over Cambodia

BANGKOK — Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa defended Thailand’s communication strategy amid border tensions with Cambodia, insisting the country has gained significant international support while maintaining bilateral dialogue approaches.

Accuracy Over Speed in Communication

Speaking to Matichon-Khaosod media on July 31, Sangiampongsa said that while information speed may not meet public expectations, accuracy remains paramount alongside timeliness.

“Some matters remain unclear and unconfirmed. As a government, we must wait for readiness and correct facts. We cannot operate like online media that provides information without accountability,” he said.

“We’re trying to improve communication, but I must emphasize we prioritize accurate information over being fast but wrong.”

maris2
Thailand’s Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa holds a press conference on the Thai-Cambodia border situation at the Foreign Ministry in Bangkok on July 31, 2025.

Thailand Gains International Support

Sangiampongsa said he met UN representatives and condemned Cambodia from the start, following both incidents where Thai soldiers stepped on landmines. He explained the Thai-Cambodia clashes to international partners, noting Cambodia targeted hospitals and civilian communities.

“The international community is aware of all information, so I confirm that on the global stage, we have a significant advantage over Cambodia,” he stated.

Sangiampongsa also noted that Cambodia has failed to gain success on the global stage, beginning with the UN Security Council, which did not issue a resolution and specified that the matter should be resolved through bilateral negotiations without returning to the UNSC.

This was further evidenced in a recent incident on July 30, during a high-level UN meeting on a two-state solution (Palestine), Thailand’s UN Ambassador protested Cambodia’s irrelevant mention of the Thai-Cambodia border clashes. Cambodia ultimately had to withdraw its statement.

Diplomatic Procedures Defended

The Foreign Minister said his ministry follows proper diplomatic procedures rather than engaging in media attacks, which may cause public misunderstanding and concerns about delays. However, all actions prioritize national interests.

Regarding the planned August 1 visit by military attachés to border areas after the ceasefire, Maris acknowledged that finding concrete evidence of ceasefire violations may be difficult. The ministry coordinated with the military to provide information for international presentation.

military attache3
Assistant military attachés from 47 countries stationed in Thailand attended a briefing on the Thai-Cambodian border situation at the Royal Thai Army Command in Bangkok on July 22, 2025.

Evidence of Civilian Targeting

The delegation will examine damage at Phanom Dong Rak Hospital, gas stations, and civilian homes located dozens of kilometers from the border, proving Cambodia deliberately targeted innocent Thai civilians.

Sangiampongsa dismissed concerns about the delayed diplomatic tour compared to Cambodia’s earlier action, saying facts remain facts regardless of timing. The delay resulted from safety concerns for officials, given uncertainty about potential ceasefire violations and newly planted landmines violating the Ottawa Convention.

Close Government-Military Coordination

The Foreign Minister emphasized close government-military coordination, citing negotiations led by Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Putrajaya, Malaysia. Deputy Defense Minister General Nattapol Nakpanich coordinated military information throughout, including ceasefire agreement details.

Bilateral Approach Maintained

Thailand maintains its position that problems with Cambodia must be resolved through bilateral discussions, as demonstrated in Malaysia where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim served as mediator but Thailand requested witness status only.

“We didn’t allow any third country interference. Everything remains based on national interests,” Sangiampongsa concluded.

Thailand Denies Cambodia Kidnapping Claims, Vows to Stick to Facts

The Royal Thai Army released images of the 20 Cambodian soldiers who surrendered in the Chong Sam Taet area, Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province, shown eating meals at a Thai government facility on July 28, 2025.

BANGKOK — Thai government dismissed Cambodia’s kidnapping accusations regarding 20 detained soldiers, with Deputy Defense Minister General Nattapol Nakpanich vowing to counter disinformation with facts and humanitarian principles despite criticism of the government’s communication strategy.

General Nattapol Nakpanich, who heads the Thai-Cambodia Border Situation Management Center, rejected Cambodia’s accusations that Thailand kidnapped 20 Cambodian soldiers, explaining they had trespassed into Thai territory and must complete legal proceedings.

The 20 Cambodian soldiers surrendered after running out of ammunition in the Chong Sam Taet area, Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province. All face legal proceedings for illegal entry, while two injured soldiers received medical treatment at Weerawat Yothin Camp Hospital in Surin under security supervision.

Nattapol Nakpanich
Deputy Defense Minister General Nattapol Nakpanich, who also heads the Thai-Cambodia Border Situation Management Center, speaks to media at Government House on July 31, denying accusations of kidnapping Cambodian soldiers.

“When we detained them, the army treated them well – provided food, bathing facilities, toothbrushes, and medical care for the injured. We were preparing to send them back, but Cambodia claimed we kidnapped them. We must protect ourselves by questioning them and recording testimony to prove they weren’t kidnapped, as future evidence before returning them humanely,” he said.

Gen. Nattapol emphasized that countering misinformation requires factual responses, which may be slower but more effective than distorted information.

Communication Criticism

Deputy Defense Minister’s statement reflects criticism from some Thai citizens and media who are dissatisfied with the government’s communication approach, viewed as responding too slowly and always appearing one step behind Cambodia. This was particularly evident when Cambodia brought international military attachés to view damaged areas from earlier clashes on July 30, while Thailand scheduled its diplomatic tour for August 1.

(AKP via AP)

Gen. Nattapol explained that Cambodia could bring military diplomats because they were confident Thailand had truly ceased fire, but Thailand wasn’t certain Cambodia had genuinely stopped. Given Cambodia’s violation of agreements in the first two days, bringing military attachés into potential gunfire would make Thailand responsible for any incidents. Only after Cambodia successfully brought diplomats to the area could Thailand be confident it was safe to proceed.

“The media may not be pleased that after they treated us that way, we still show humanity. But I must emphasize we will fight distortion with facts and humanity. We must uphold the law. If we acted like them, we’d be no better. I apologize to all citizens and media for this,” he said.

Communication Strategy Overhaul

Lieutenant Colonel Surasant Kongsiri, spokesperson for the Thai-Cambodia Border Situation Management Center,  stated that the center is accelerating communication integration, providing comprehensive information to Thai and foreign media in a one-stop service format to reduce misunderstandings and counter disinformation. Concrete results are expected within 1-2 days.

Foreign Ministry Deputy Director-General Maratee Nalita Andamo said foreign media will be crucial for sharing facts with the international community during the August 1 site visit, focusing on actual damage to civilian infrastructure that Cambodia targeted in violation of international humanitarian law.

BANGKOK — Saha Group has expanded its second-hand brand business into the designer fashion segment, partnering with Japanese consignment retailer RAGTAG to open its first store outside Japan at One Bangkok.

The flagship location features over 2,000 items priced from 600 to 500,000 baht, targeting young adults and working professionals following luxury fashion trends.

Hayato Motegi, Managing Director of World Saha (Thailand), said Thailand’s second-hand luxury market shows high growth potential, evidenced by numerous Thai and Japanese players entering the space. Economic conditions and purchasing power have driven consumers toward affordable second-hand goods.

“There’s still a gap in the designer fashion segment that no player has directly targeted – clothing from fashion designers and luxury brands,” Motegi explained. “Young consumers want designer pieces and layered styling with accessories, plus they value sustainability.”

He cited growing Thai customer numbers at RAGTAG’s 24 Japan stores and successful pop-up results at CentralWorld as proof of demand. Thai customers notably prefer oversized clothing and colorful, bold-patterned items and bags.

The joint venture between ICC International and World Group launched the 165-square-meter One Bangkok store with an 18 million baht budget. The location stocks 1,700-1,800 items, attracting diverse customers aged 20-50 including Thais, foreign tourists, and Japanese residents during its first five days.

RAGTAG differentiates itself through 70% Japanese designer imports, expert product selection and grading, direct owner purchases (no middlemen), and knowledgeable fashion-focused staff. The company uses anonymous customer behavior analysis systems from its Japan operations.

The company plans additional Bangkok and suburban locations in malls and street shops, leveraging Saha Group’s site selection expertise. An official e-commerce platform ragtagthailand.com will launch by end-2025, currently in testing phase. Long-term plans include Southeast Asian expansion.

Motegi emphasized synergy rather than competition with Saha Group’s existing luxury watch consignment business, noting potential future collaboration as both brands have different specializations.

Thailand Tops ASEAN in EV Registrations, Investment Surpasses $4 Billion

2025 marks the first time Thailand has successfully exported EVs.

BANGKOK  — Thailand’s electric vehicle (EV) market continues to flourish, with registrations up 52% year-on-year in the first half of 2025. Total investment for the production of electric vehicles, charging stations and battery facilities has exceeded $4 billion.

The EV Board, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Phicai Chunhavachira, met on July 30 to review progress in the electric vehicle industry.

According to Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary General of the Board of Investment (BOI) and Secretary of the National Electric Vehicle Policy Committee (EV Board), 57,289 new battery electric passenger vehicles (BEVs) were registered in the first half of 2025, an increase of 52% compared to the same period in 2024. BEVs now account for over 15% of all new registrations, the highest rate in ASEAN.

Cumulative BEV car registrations in Thailand now exceed 203,000, while other electric vehicles on the road include 71,900 electric motorbikes, 3,800 electric buses and trucks and 1,000 electric tuk-tuks.

Currently, 27 companies are participating in the EV3 promotion program, 16 manufacturers of electric cars and pickups and 11 manufacturers of electric motorbikes. A further 10 companies are involved in the EV3.5 programme, all of which produce electric cars and pickups.

A total of 209,623 vehicles are now registered for the EV3 and EV3.5 models, 175,064 cars and 34,559 motorbikes.

The total investment in electric vehicles, core components and charging infrastructure amounts to 137.7 billion baht (approx. 4.2 billion dollar), including:

  • BEV production: 21 projects, 41.1 billion baht invested, combined annual capacity of 386,000 units.
  • Electric motorcycle production: 16 projects, 990 million baht, 810,000 units/year.
  • Electric bus/truck production: 3 projects, 2.2 billion baht, 4,800 units/year.
  • Battery production: 53 projects, 80.1 billion baht.
  • Key components (e.g., traction motors, BMS, DCU, onboard chargers): 42 projects, 6.5 billion baht.
  • EV charging stations: 29 projects, 5.6 billion baht, targeting installation of 20,080 chargers, including 7,360 quick chargers.
  • Battery swap stations: 5 projects, 1.28 billion baht, including 555 motorcycle swap stations, 7 for large commercial vehicles, and 6 for passenger cars.

In March 2025, there were 3,720 public charging stations nationwide with 11,622 connections; 6,524 DC fast chargers and 5,098 AC chargers, covering all regions of the country.

Revisions to EV3–EV3.5 Incentive Conditions

The meeting approved changes to the rules for excise duty incentives under EV3 and EV3.5. In particular, e-vehicles produced for export will count towards domestic production obligations at 1.5 units from 2025, as proposed by the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai EV Association.

This move is expected to increase annual EV exports to about 12,500 units in 2025 and 52,000 units in 2026.

The EV Board also introduced tighter oversight of subsidy disbursements by the Excise Department under EV3 and EV3.5. Companies granted extended registration deadlines must place a bank guarantee: 20 million baht for firms with over 5 billion baht in registered capital, and 40 million baht for smaller firms. Subsidies will be withheld if cumulative production falls short of the required threshold.

“This update to the EV Board’s framework enhances both the effectiveness of EV3 and EV3.5 in regulating subsidy disbursement and the flexibility for manufacturers to plan their operations. It also strengthens Thailand’s potential as a regional and global EV manufacturing and export hub,” Narit stated.

Trade Deals Before Deadline, Thailand Awaits Official US Tariff

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira speaks to reporters at Government House on July 29, 2025. He stated that he still hopes the US tariff deal will meet the August 1 implementation deadline.

BANGKOK — Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said Thailand expects official notification within 24 hours regarding tariff rates under President Trump’s Reciprocal Tariff policy, following US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s announcement of trade deals with Thailand and Cambodia.

Speaking on Fox News Wednesday, Lutnick said Trump personally called both countries over the weekend. “I listened all day Saturday while he’s calling Cambodia, Thailand. What happens on Monday? They announce a truce. We made trade deals with Cambodia and Thailand today,” he stated.

Thai Negotiating Team Stands Firm

Pichai emphasized that Thai negotiating teams worked comprehensively across trade data, international law, and economic impact assessments. “We proposed conditions Thailand can accept while protecting maximum national interests,” he said.

“Though results remain unclear, I confirm the Thai team never remained passive or compromised easily. Every decision underwent deep analysis for national benefit,” Pichai stated, thanking supporters and vowing to continue fighting together through current challenges.

Prior to the Thailand-Cambodia announcement, Trump had declared trade deals with various allied nations at different rates. Japan, South Korea, and the European Union secured 15% tariffs, while the Philippines and Indonesia received 19% rates.

Vietnam faces a 20% tariff under its deal, and India agreed to 25%. Thailand and Cambodia were initially facing 36% tariffs before reaching their agreements.

Bravo BKK Unveils Bold Strategy for Second Half of 2025

Driving Growth Through Creative Campaigns & Strategic Partnerships

Introducing “One Year Zero Rent” – A Free-Rent Campaign for New Tenants

Bravo BKK – Fit and Fun Mall, the vibrant lifestyle and entertainment hub located in Rama 9 near RCA, Bangkok, has unveiled its plan for the second half of 2025. Known as a “New Experience Destination,” Bravo BKK sets itself apart from traditional shopping malls by offering open, creative spaces for all. The new strategy focuses on expanding its tenant network through dynamic brand partnerships, with a key highlight being the “One Year Zero Rent” campaign — offering up to 12 months of free rent for new tenants. The goal is to fill 60–80% of currently available spaces and boost mall traffic by at least 30% within 6 months.

Mr. Goh Soo Sing, Founder & CEO of Bravo BKK, emphasized the mall’s commitment to redefining the retail experience:

Our continued development and strategic branding as an urban lifestyle destination have earned Bravo BKK recognition among young city dwellers. They see us as a creative venue — not just a shopping center — but a cultural playground opens to all genders and generations.”

image3 32

With multipurpose event spaces and tenants predominantly from the entertainment sector, Bravo BKK is widely recognized as a major venue for international concerts, fan meetings, and beauty pageants such as Miss Grand Thailand and Miss Universe Thailand (MUT). It’s also home to leading lifestyle events like Siam Songkran Festival and night markets. The space has quickly become a community hub for fitness, sports, and art lovers. Bravo BKK is the first lifestyle complex in Thailand to introduce fitness activations inside the mall, featuring indoor pickleball courts, a balance bike and skate park, as well as free dance and yoga classes in the evening open to all. These offerings promote active living and transform the mall into a vibrant, inclusive space for recreation and community.

However, Bravo BKK acknowledges the need to expand its consumer awareness to broader audiences. To achieve this, the “One Year Zero Rent” campaign was introduced — aimed at attracting new brands and entrepreneurs in F&B, beauty, wellness, fitness, education, entertainment, retail, office, studios and hotel sectors. This initiative aligns with Bravo’s event-led awareness strategy, reinforcing its position as a destination for opportunities and new experiences.

Campaign Details – One Year Zero Rent

The campaign offers eligible tenants the opportunity to rent space at Bravo BKK with zero base rent for the first year, under a 3-year lease contract.

Terms include:

Campaign runs from August 1 to October 31, 2025. Interested tenants are invited to submit their business profiles for consideration via: Email: [email protected] and LINE Official: @Bravo BKK

We are confident that this campaign will attract a diverse mix of tenants and drive a significant increase in foot traffic. Within the first 3 months of launch, we expect to see at least a 50% growth in new tenants and fill 60–80% of currently vacant space. Traffic should increase by no less than 30%, supported by both online and offline buzz,” said Mr. Goh.

In the second half of 2025, Bravo BKK continues to strengthen the Event-Led Awareness strategy by reinforcing position as a lifestyle creative hub and driving traffic through a diverse lineup of activities. These include an art exhibition that invites visitors to step inside the imaginative worlds of three artistic disciplines: painting, digital art, and fashion — blending creativity with engagement.

Additional highlights include events hosted by tenants, such as the rooftop nightlife opening party, weekend night markets, pet-friendly community gatherings, sports activities, and co-branded collaborations.

These efforts align with Bravo’s three strategic pillars:

– “Flexible Space, Curated Use”: spaces designed to adapt to the creative vision of each tenant

– “Culture-Driven Programming”: delivering fresh content within the mall

– “Smart Partnerships”: collaborating with like-minded partners who are ready to grow together.

Through these initiatives, Bravo BKK aims to become a diverse, sustainable community — and ultimately, Bangkok’s true “Urban Creative Playground.”
