The IB Diploma Program Can Motivate Students to Perform

Learn About the IB Diploma Program

Alt Tag: International Students enrolled in the IB Diploma Program

Many students are more capable in some subjects than they are in others. They spend more time and excel in some subjects simply because they have an intrinsic knack for them and enjoy them more.

The IB Diploma Program was created in 1968 by teachers at the International School of Geneva. They created a two-year program that recognizes students’ different levels of interest and capabilities in different subjects. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program allows these differences to help determine the student’s studies. The program allows students to choose three subjects in which to specialize and study the subjects at a higher level.

The IB Diploma Program is offered to students in Bangkok between the ages of 16-19 at the International School Bangkok (ISB). It’s an ambitious program that features an international outlook. The program is widely recognized for its excellent preparation of students for higher education.

Studies Within the IB Diploma Program

The IB program’s curriculum consists of six subject groups and includes the study of two languages and the IB Diploma Core areas of Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Service, and Activity. Students must also maintain a satisfactory level of intellectual advancement in the other required subjects at Standard Level.

For many of the Diploma Program (DP) courses, students complete externally assessed coursework. Students take written exams for most courses at the end of the DP.

Personal Choice Diploma

Some of our students choose to take our Personal Choice Diploma, which can include several of the IB Diploma courses. Upon satisfactorily completing the courses, the students receive individual IB certificates.

Pathway to Higher Education

Upon graduation, students taking the IB Diploma Program and the Personal Choice Diploma will receive offers from world-renowned colleges and universities.

These institutions recognize the quality and thoroughness of the IB program offered by ISB. With the added benefits of ISB’s diverse curriculum, exceptional teaching standards, and countless opportunities for our students to develop their intellectual skills, ISB ensures that our graduates are prepared to meet and excel at future educational challenges.

Evidence suggests that DP graduates go on to attend colleges and universities at a higher rate than non-IB students. These DP graduates apply to more than 5,000 institutions of higher education in more than 100 countries annually.

Many top universities have established ties with the IB Diploma Program and actively recruit their students from DP graduates. They appreciate that DPs focus on rigorous academic study within a broad yet balanced curriculum and its international outlook that encourages diversity.

DP students also have the opportunity to test their knowledge and skills by applying themselves to community service, which provides valuable work experience outside of the academic world.

Activists Express Concerns Over the Future of 5 Uyghurs in Thai Prison

Klong Prem Prison

BANGKOK  — Thai human rights activists on Wednesday night said at a panel discussion at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand that five Uyghurs currently serving prison term for fleeing the Thai Immigration Detention Centre could eventually be deported to China and face possible detention, torture and forced labour. They urged the Thai government to eventually allow these people to seek asylum in a third country.

The five are serving 6-year prison terms at Klong Prem Prison, a maximum-security prison, but Human Rights Watch senior Thai researcher Sunai Phasuk warns the forced deportation to China could happen sooner than later as their prison terms could be reduced due to good conduct and on special royal occasions. He also urges the Paetongtarn government to be sincere in ensuring the safety and freedom of the 100 Uyghurs sent back to China at the end of February.

“The Thai government has been lying all along,” he said, referring to the breach of non refoulement principle, and added that Thai diplomats in Beijing, who will now be entrusted with the duty of checking on the well-being of the 100 Uyghurs in Xinjiang, should at least try to do their job properly.

“At least show that Thailand has a spine, not bow to the master in Beijing and behave like a vassal state,” said Sunai, who was a panelist at the FCCT on the topic of the Thai government deporting Uyghurs and its recent trip to Xinjiang.

Chalida Tajaroeunsuk, a senior NGO activist working for the rights of Uyghur detainees in Thailand, was another panelist. She warns that the Chinese Embassy is very persistent in pressuring the Thai government to hand over the 5 remaining Uyghurs while Western embassies who work behind the scene are not as direct.

She added the Thai government has also refused to allow related UN agencies to meet with the five in order to start the asylum process, thus making it difficult, if not impossible for Western embassies to help these people.

Speaking on Zoom from the US, Abdulhakim Idris, executive director of the Center for Uyghur Studies in Washington DC, said it’s a shame that the government of Malaysia and Indonesia, both predominantly Muslim countries, have failed to assist the Uyghurs in Thailand. “Shame on Malaysia and Indonesia,” said Idris. “Thailand became complicit in this genocide, used as a tool [by China] to cover up this genicide.”

Phil Robertson, moderator of the panel and FCCT Board Member said Thai government representatives have been invited but decided not to send a representative. Robertson told Khaosod English the FCCT did not reach out to the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok, however.

Khaosod English contacted a Chinese Embassy staff for possible comment but there was no reply as of press time. Also, the US Embassy paid for the entrance fees charged by the FCCT as they invited a dozen Thai journalists to cover the talk on Wednesday night.

These factors are expected to have a positive impact on Hylife Group’s core sectors, particularly in food and medical products. He emphasised that the company sees expansion opportunities both domestically and internationally, with a strong focus on sustainable development, innovation, and leveraging digital platforms to enhance product and service value.

Through her signature technique of layering color and texture, the series captures the ebb and flow of the ocean, the impermanence of life, and the purity of renewal—much like the Songkran ritual, where water symbolizes joy and new beginnings. “Spring Break Series” – A vibrant tribute to spring’s renewal and the rebirth of nature. Delicate petals in motion across the canvas evoke the fleeting yet breathtaking beauty of flowers, ever-changing with the cycle of time. French Fugitive Linked to Deadly Prison Break Arrested in Phuket

Phuket Immigration Police officers ask a 24-year-old French national suspected of involvement in a violent prison break operation in France to present identification documents after his arrest at Phuket Airport on March 26, 2025.

PHUKET — Thai authorities have apprehended a key suspect involved in a deadly prison break in France who had fled to Thailand’s resort island of Phuket on March 26.

The Royal Thai Police and Immigration Bureau, acting on intelligence from the French Embassy in Thailand, successfully tracked down and arrested 24-year-old French national identified only as “Mr. Adonis” at Phuket International Airport.

According to officials, the suspect has confessed to participating in a violent prison break operation in France that resulted in the death of prison guards. Following the incident, he evaded an Interpol arrest warrant by fleeing to Phuket, where he had been hiding.

french fugitive phuket
Immigration officers explain the escape route chart of Mr. Adonis, suspect in the prison break and murder of prison guards in France on May 14, 2024, before fleeing to Phuket and being arrested, during a press conference in Bangkok on March 27, 2025.

The case refers to what Thai authorities described as a shocking incident that occurred in France last year. International media reports indicate the prison break took place in May 2024 in the Eure region of northern France, when six armed assailants ambushed a prison transport vehicle at a toll booth. The attackers rammed the van and opened fire, killing two prison guards and seriously injuring three others.

The primary escapee was reportedly Mohamed Amra, known as “The Fly,” who was being transported back to prison from a court appearance in Normandy. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin described the subsequent manhunt as “unprecedented,” noting it was the country’s first fatal attack on prison staff in more than 30 years.

While Thai officials are moving to process the case quickly, formal extradition procedures remain unclear. According to information on the website of the Royal Thai Embassy in Paris, an extradition treaty between Thailand and France is currently under consideration and still being drafted.

Despite this legal technicality, at a Bangkok Immigration Bureau press conference today, Deputy Commissioner Police Major General Pantana Nutchanart stated that Adonis will be sent back to France as soon as possible.

The investigation revealed that Adonis entered Thailand through Phuket Immigration on February 8, 2025, before France issued an arrest warrant and before Interpol issued a Red Notice. The suspect had been hiding in the Kamala and Patong areas of Kathu district, Phuket.

Adonis had originally been granted permission to stay in the kingdom until April 8. Following the arrest, officials will now revoke his visa and coordinate with the French Embassy for further legal proceedings.

The operation, led by Immigration Bureau 1 Commander Police Major General Prasart Khemaprasit, targeted venues in three main areas known for inexpensive karaoke bars: Klongtoei, Romklao, and Thonburi.

Thailand Needs New Strategy Amid Trump Tariffs, Says Economist

tariffs

BANGKOK —  The head of Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has warned that the country is likely to be hit by new tariffs from Donald Trump as fears grow of a looming trade war that could impact both this year and next.

He emphasized that Thailand is facing complex economic challenges and that the “next step” should focus on investing in human capital and agricultural technology, as well as increasing competitiveness in the tourism and healthcare sectors.

Dr. Supavud Saicheua, Chairman of NESDC, delivered a keynote speech at the seminar “Prachachat Forum: NEXT MOVE Thailand 2025” hosted by Prachachat Business on March 26. He said that in addition to Thailand’s ongoing challenges, such as slow economic growth, declining competitiveness, low agricultural productivity, an aging society and shortages of labor and energy, a new problem will emerge on April 2, 2025.

The Trump administration is expected to announce reciprocal tariffs targeting various countries, including Thailand, on that date.

next move prachachat
“Prachachat Forum: NEXT MOVE Thailand 2025,” hosted by Prachachat Business, takes place at Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, on March 26, 2025.

Significant Impact on Thailand

He pointed out that the US Federal Reserve has already revised its forecast for economic growth in 2025 downwards from 2.1 percent to 1.7 percent. If the world’s largest economy and the fastest growing among the industrialized nations has to lower its expectations, the impact on Thailand is likely to be significant.

The full impact of Trump’s proposed tariffs remains to be seen. A look back to the 1930s, when the US passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act and imposed across-the-board tariffs of 20, resulted in a two-thirds drop in global trade, about 60 percent. Although a repeat of this scale is unlikely due to today’s more sophisticated monetary policy and better economic conditions, this episode serves as a historical warning.

Dr. Supavud stressed that Thailand will inevitably face impacts this year and next and must manage the situation as effectively as possible.

He also referred to Peter Navarro, Trump’s trade advisor, who has commented on Thailand in various contexts as part of the “Agenda 2025” policy document. The US has already worked out scenarios to calculate how imposing tariffs on Thailand, at the same level that Thailand imposes on the US, could reduce the US trade deficit.

“Simply put, the U.S. has done its homework,” Dr. Supavud said. “Navarro seems to prefer that the US impose more tariffs on Thailand instead of asking Thailand to lower its tariffs. That way, the US can raise more revenue, which it believes could help reduce the budget deficit.”

Dr. Supavud expressed concern about the risks that US trade policy poses to Thailand, especially given that exports to the US account for nearly 20 percent of Thailand’s total exports or about 9 percent of the country’s GDP.

Longstanding Challenges Persist

He added that Thailand’s older problems remain unresolved, in particular, persistently slow economic growth and long-term supply-side issues. Essentially, the issue is how Thailand can expand its production capacity.

One major concern is the aging population. There are currently 12.5 million Thais over the age of 60. Of these, only a third are employed and 45 percent of this group have no savings. The remaining 55 percent have on average less than 100,000 baht ($2,950) in savings. It is predicted that this aging group will grow to more than 18 million in the next 15 years.

Research shows that economic growth typically stems 15–30 percent from labor expansion, 20–35 percent from investment, and 40–60 percent from technological advancement. Therefore, technology will play a critical role in future growth, making it essential for Thailand to invest in human development and innovation, especially given the declining size of the labor force.

Dr. Supavud recommended that Thailand needs to invest in agricultural technology in addition to developing human capital. Currently, agriculture accounts for only 8.6 percent of GDP, but it takes up 30 percent of the country’s labor force, 45 percent of its land and nearly 70 percent of its water resources. The imbalance, he noted, is glaring.

In terms of competitiveness, Thailand ranks fifth in agricultural exports to China and has comparative advantages in food and agricultural goods. He urged Thailand to build on this strength as competition in the industrial sector would be far more difficult. In addition to agriculture, Thailand also has the potential to be a leader in tourism and medical tourism, sectors that should be continuously expanded.
