Thai Child Foundation Praises Verdict in First Olympic Medalist’s Case

BANGKOK  — Thailand’s first Olympic gold medalist, Somrak Kamsing, 52, has been sentenced to three years, one month, and 10 days in prison for sexual offenses against a minor. The Khon Kaen Provincial Court found him guilty of abducting and assaulting a 17-year-old girl in December 2023.

The Child, Youth and Family Foundation welcomed the verdict, calling it “a first step in restoring justice” for the victim. However, the foundation’s secretary-general, Chuwit Chantharos, expressed concern about media coverage, noting that some outlets provided excessive details that could harm the victim’s mental well-being.

Somrak Kamsing, Thailand’s first Olympic gold medalist and former boxer, speaks to reporters about his plan to appeal after the court’s verdict in an attempted rape case involving a minor on January 23, 2025.

“The victim and family have faced severe social media judgment. While this initial verdict provides some justice, it confirms that no adult should sexually abuse minors under any circumstances,” said Chantharos on January 24. He urged media outlets to exercise caution in their reporting, citing potential violations of the 2013 Child Protection Act.

The case gained attention when the victim’s family sought help through the Khon Kaen Children and Family Home, fearing unfair treatment due to Kamsing’s celebrity status and political background. The foundation provided legal support, working alongside public prosecutors.

Kamsing, who won gold in boxing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, was ordered on January 23 to pay 170,000 baht in total compensation to the victim and her guardians. He has indicated he will appeal the verdict, while a second defendant, identified as his close associate, was acquitted.

Somrak began his fighting career as a traditional Muay Thai boxer before transitioning to boxing. He competed as a featherweight and won his gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. His post-boxing career proved rocky, including a failed gas station business and a divorce. He has two children, including his daughter Rakwanee “Best” Kamsing, who is an actress and famous YouTuber.

MARU CHULA Opens Show Units for First Public Preview on Feb.1-2

MARU CHULA

Special discounts of up to 500,000 baht available; developers confident of securing over 60% bookings during the event. The MARU CHULA project by Major Development Public Company Limited is set to host an Open Sales Gallery event on February 1-2, showcasing sample rooms and offices for the first time, with a target of achieving over 60% bookings.

The property emphasizes its prime location with convenient travel access, close proximity to Chulalongkorn University, and the popular street food district “Banthat Thong.”

Featuring over 20 amenities, it highlights the strong demand for buying and renting in the Samyan, Silom, and Sathorn areas. With confidence in high market interest, the project aims to follow the success of MARU Lat Phrao and MARU Ekkamai, both of which have already sold out.

image4 2

Dr. Suriya Poolvoralaks, Managing Director of Major Development Public Company Limited, shared that since the launch of the new MARU CHULA condominium last year, the pre-sale event in September 2024 received an excellent response from customers. The company is now gearing up for an exclusive Open Sales Gallery event on February 1-2, where customers will have the first opportunity to tour real sample rooms and explore the sales gallery.

The event will feature special promotions, including an additional discount of up to 500,000 baht and a MARU Limited Collection keychain for customers who book during the event. The company aims to achieve a booking target of at least 60% during this occasion.

image3 2

The MARU CHULA project stands out with its 27-storey high-rise condominium featuring 219 residential units. Its key selling point is being a “pet-friendly condo” in a prime location in the heart of the city. The project offers easy access to transportation, located near the MRT Hua Lamphong station, and is close to the trendy new street food district, “Banthat Thong.”

The MARU CHULA project is also strategically located near prominent educational institutions such as Chulalongkorn University, Triam Udom Suksa School, as well as the business districts of Silom and Sathorn.

The target customer group primarily includes working professionals in the Phra Ram 4, Silom, and Sathorn areas, as well as personnel and students from Chulalongkorn University and nearby educational institutions. There is a strong and continued demand for both rentals and purchases in this location.

image6 5

Dr. Suriya also mentioned that the MARU CHULA project is the third condominium under the “MARU” brand, following the concept of “Live more Live MARU.” Building on the success of the previous two projects, MARU Lat Phrao and MARU Ekkamai, both of which have already sold out, this new development reflects the brand’s success in terms of sales, guarantees its quality, and further solidifies customer confidence.

“The key to the success of the MARU brand lies in its strong reputation among customers as a project well-connected to the BTS, offering easy accessibility, making it ideal for everyone from teenagers to working adults. Additionally, the design and style of the residential units, along with a wide range of facilities, meet the needs of residents exceptionally well. Another crucial factor is that it is a pet-friendly project, which is in line with modern trends and the growing popularity of pet ownership,” said Dr. Suriya.

Building on this success, the company has further refined the design, functionality of the residential units, and the exterior design of the building in this new project to better cater to the needs of working professionals and students. The project includes over 20 facilities, such as areas for studying, working, or holding meetings, with some of these spaces available 24 hours a day.

image5 1

In addition to the prime location and exceptional facilities, another key strength of the MARU CHULA project is its joint venture partner, GS E&C from South Korea. As the leading real estate developer in South Korea and one of the top three construction companies in the country, GS E&C has been involved in landmark projects such as the National Museum of Korea and Seoul Coex.

The company is also recognized as the eighth-largest conglomerate in South Korea, with significant influence in trade and investment, following other major entities like Samsung, Hyundai, Lotte, and LG.

image1 4

MARU CHULA, a new condominium in the heart of the city, is available starting at 3.95 million baht, offering a variety of room styles to suit every need. The project features the key selling point of being a pet-friendly condo, reaffirming the company’s leadership in this market. Designed under the concept “Live more Live MARU,” the development focuses on three main principles: Fit, Fun, and Freedom. Starting with Fit, the project offers a variety of room designs to cater to every need.

Fun brings a new level of enjoyment to living with 24-hour facilities and proximity to the trendy Banthat Thong street food hub. Freedom provides residents with the flexibility to easily access everything they need, located just 200 meters from Banthat Thong Road, 200 meters from Chulalongkorn 100th Anniversary Park, 700 meters from Chulalongkorn University, 600 meters from MRT Hua Lamphong, and 600 meters from the Si Rat Expressway entrance/exit, ensuring convenience and accessibility for residents.

Thai Princess Adopts “Hachiko of Korat” to Heal the Dog’s Grieving Heart

Princess
The Facebook page 'Siribha Official Fund' shares a photo of Moo Daeng, a dog known as "Hachiko of Korat," who was adopted by Princess Siribha Chudabhorn on Jan. 23, 2025 and relocated to Chiang Mai. The dog was previously known for waiting for its deceased owner outside a convenience store at Ya Mo Market in Nakhon Ratchasima Province (right).

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — Princess Siribha Chudabhorn has taken in “Moo Daeng”, a dog dubbed the “Hachiko of Korat” for the unwavering loyalty with which her waited for her deceased owner outside a store in Yamo Market in Nakhon Ratchasima. The princess shared the news on her official Facebook page to address the concerns of dog lovers following Moo Daeng’s heartwarming yet tragic story.

“To all of Moo Daeng’s fans, I want to bring you up to speed so you don’t have to worry, feel anxious or have unanswered questions after all the recent drama,” the princess began.
She explained that she first learned about Moo Daeng through a video showing the community’s efforts to raise money for the dog’s medical treatment.

Moo Daeng was originally cared for by an individual named Iw, but due to Iw’s health problems, Iw was unable to take Moo Daeng home. Concerned about the dog’s welfare, the princess offered to help care for Moo Daeng and find a loving and safe home for her.

The Facebook page ‘Mari-Mo’ shares a photo of Moo Daeng, a dog known as “Hachiko of Korat,” who was adopted by Princess Siribha Chudabhorn on Jan. 23, 2025 and relocated to Chiang Mai.

“All my dogs have experienced trauma, whether through abuse, abandonment or injury. But in Moo Daeng’s case, it’s severe depression. Yes, dogs and cats are not so different from us, if we are only observant enough to notice them. Since I raise my pets like my own children, their mental health comes first. Moo Daeng suffers from what is known as Major Depressive Syndrome, which is caused by the sudden loss of a loved one. It’s a condition that the mind can not cope with,” said the princess.

The princess also spoke about her personal experiences, revealing that she has been living with it for 9-10 years. “I want to make everyone realize that this mental health condition, if not understood, can cause irreparable damage to Moo Daeng, both mentally and physically. While humans are able to hide their pain and appear normal on the outside, dogs are pure. They show exactly how they feel,” she explained.

She emphasized that it was not her intention to take Moo Daeng away from everyone, but to ensure that the dog receives urgent psychological care.

“I swear on my life that I will love and care for Moo Daeng like my own child, just like all my other pets. You can follow the news about Moo Daeng via my page. If I’m busy and don’t post anything, feel free to comment and say you miss him or ask for photos — I’ll be sure to post them. If I ever come to Korat, I will bring Moo Daeng in person to meet everyone. Thank you for listening to me,” the princess concluded.

Princess Siribha Chudabhorn posts a photo of herself with another rescued dog from Korat, similar to Moo Daeng, the famous dog known as ‘Korat’s Hachiko,’ whom she recently adopted from Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

The adoption process was described in detail on the Facebook page Mari-Mo Photography. The princess instructed her royal aides to contact the Provincial Livestock Department and the veterinarians who had treated Moo Daeng. They also contacted the owner of the grocery store on January 20.

The Princess explained her standards of care for Moo Daeng to facilitate the decision-making process. On January 22, the Provincial Livestock Department transported Moo Daeng to the Kasetsart College Veterinary Hospital in Thipphiman. Two employees of the store and he owner of Mari-Mo Photography Facebook page were present to learn details and observe before Moo Daeng was finally taken to the princess’s residence in Chiang Mai.

Swiss Dog Owner Defies Beach Ban, Sparks Fears Among Tourists and Thais

Swiss dog owner
Combination photos show (left) a Swiss man living in Thailand walking his unleashed dogs on the beach, which led to dog attacks in August 2024, and (right) the same man walking his dogs at the same location on January 20, 2025, despite official orders prohibiting it.

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN — A conflict between a Swiss dog owner and locals and tourists in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has resurfaced. The issue, which hit the headlines in August 2024 after several complaints of dog attacks, flared up again when a foreign tourist visited the area and saw the owner still walking his aggressive dogs on the beach.

On January 23, 2025, Thai and foreign tourists gathered with residents of Suan Luang Beach to lodge a complaint with officials of the Pong Prasad Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO) in Bang Saphan district. They reported that Mathias, a Swiss national living in Thailand, had returned to Suan Luang Beach with his dogs despite having previously been ordered to remove the animals from the area while legal proceedings were ongoing.

Local residents provided video evidence showing Mathias walking four dogs; two large and two small, along the beach without a leash or collar. When Mathias realized that people were recording him, he seemed indifferent. The video also shows tourists and locals, including children, standing still for fear of another attack.

Thai and foreign tourists gathered with Suan Luang Beach residents on Jan. 23, 2025, to file a complaint with Pong Prasad SAO officials in Bang Saphan district regarding the return of dogs previously involved in beach attacks.

Mr. Thip Ruenkasem, 56, who recorded the video, said the dog attacks on Thai and foreign tourists have significantly affected the region’s tourism revenue. “Since the first dog attacks, visitors have been reluctant to come to Suan Luang Beach because they fear for their safety. This complaint aims to find an explanation as to why Mathias is allowed to violate the orders and continue to bring his dogs here,” he explained.

He added: “The Pong Prasad SAO has already ordered Mathias to remove his dogs from the area to prevent further incidents until the legal case is resolved. Yet he brazenly returns, walks his dogs and even taunts the authorities by gesturing towards the cameras while evidence is being recorded. This behavior seems like a blatant disregard for Thai law.”

Mr. Rolf, a 76-year-old Swiss tourist, told us that he was bitten by one of Mathias’ dogs last year. After the incident, he only stayed in Thailand for two months before returning to his home country. When he learned that the authorities had banned Mathias from keeping his dogs, he was very relieved. However, when he returned to Thailand, he was shocked to see Mathias walking the same dogs on the beach.

“This incident raises serious questions about how Mathias is still allowed to bring his dogs here. What legal action can be taken to protect locals and tourists and restore trust? If this continues, we could face the same problems again,” said Rolf.

A 76-year-old Swiss national shows the wound where he was bitten by one of six dogs owned by a foreigner at Ban Suan Luang Beach, Bang Saphan District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, on August 19, 2024.

Mr. Thanachai Buachuang, president of the Pong Prasad SAO, acknowledged that the problem has been going on for a long time. The SAO had mediated discussions between the victims and Mathias, as well as with various stakeholders involved, and had taken action in accordance with the law. Mathias’ lawyer filed an appeal, after which the Department of Health, Zone 5, in Ratchaburi launched an investigation. The investigation found that there were no aggressive dogs in Mathias’ house, only two small dogs, which led to the case being dropped.

The SAO conducts regular inspections, but Mathias allegedly hides the dogs when health officials visit him. When the aggressive dogs are found, the SAO wants to enforce the original order to remove them. However, Mathias has always managed to evade such measures, which has led to the ongoing complaints.

BRAND’S Young Blood Project Marks 25th Year with Thai Red Cross Blood Drive

On Thursday, 23 January 2025, at the National Blood Centre, Thai Red Cross Society, Suntory Beverage & Food (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the leader of health enrichment products under BRAND’S trademark in Thailand and Asia, commemorated its 25th year of promoting blood donation through the “BRAND’S Young Blood” project. This initiative aims to raise awareness and foster a culture of altruism among Thai youth and the new generation by encouraging them to donate blood without expecting anything in return. Additionally, the project provides a platform for Thai youth to showcase their creativity through various competitive activities.

image5 9

Suntory Beverage & Food (Thailand) Co., Ltd., along with the National Blood Centre, Thai Red Cross Society, held a press conference to announce the launch of the project “BRAND’S Young Blood….Give Blood Give Lives 2025.” This initiative, marking the 25th anniversary of the project, aims to engage younger individuals in blood donation. The project’s goal is to encourage university-level students to donate blood regularly, every three months, to maintain adequate reserves for emergencies. The target is to collect 125,000 units of blood within 2025. Porsche Sivakorn Adulsuttikul, a rising star actor, also joined the press conference to represent the new generation and highlight the significance of blood donation.

image4 12

Mrs. Mathuvalee Stithyudhakarn, Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Affairs Director, Thailand and Indochina, Suntory Beverage & Food (Thailand) Co., Ltd., stated that the company’s commitment to the value of “Giving Back to Society” led to the introduction of the “BRAND’S Young Blood” project. The project has now reached its 25th year, reflecting its success in fostering a society built on giving. This initiative, in collaboration with the National Blood Centre, Thai Red Cross Society, aims to encourage youth and new generations to donate blood for the first time and continue donating every three months, thereby increasing blood reserves for emergencies. The project has received positive annual responses from new generation donors aligning with its goals. Furthermore, the project organized various competitions such as Infographic creation, Short Song Writing, Dance, and T-Shirt Design contests, aimed at raising awareness and providing knowledge about blood donation preparation on a broader scale.

image7

“The BRAND’S Young Blood is one of the company’s key projects, showcasing our commitment to societal contributions. For the 2024 campaign, we raised 122,792 units of donated blood, exceeding the target of 100,000 units. This achievement highlights the success of instilling a responsible mindset within students, who represent a vital force in driving Thailand’s future. We believe that fostering a spirit of giving is fundamental in creating sustainable positive changes in society. For the 2025 campaign, BRAND’S Young Blood has set a goal of collecting 125,000 units of blood, marking an increase of 25,000 units from the previous year’s target of 100,000 units, in celebration of the project’s 25thanniversary. We intend to meet the target by implementing two primary activities: 1) Initiatives to support blood donation at mobile units through roadshows in educational institutions within Bangkok, its surrounding areas, and other regions; and 2) Competition designed to promote the project and present innovative ideas to raise awareness of blood donation among youth on a large scale. Both activities will complement each other to achieve the objective of raising donor awareness, thereby fostering sustainable blood donation among Thai youth. Interested individuals can find more details at https://thaibloodcentre.redcross.or.th/, www.suntorybeverageandfood.co.th, and Facebook: BRAND’S World Thailand.”

image6 6

Assoc. Prof. Dootchai Chaiwanichsiri, Director of the National Blood Centre, Thai Red Cross Society, stated that the National Blood Center is responsible for supplying blood in sufficient quantities, with the highest quality according to international standards, and ensuring safety for both donors and recipients. It is commendable that the private sector, such as Suntory Beverage & Food (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the manufacturer and distributor of BRAND’S Essence of Chicken, recognizes the importance of promoting blood donation among the younger generation to support activities of the Thai Red Cross Society, as blood donation is essential and has no substitute. While hospitals across the country have an average daily demand of 7,500–8,500 units of blood, only 3,200–3,800 units, or 42.67–44.71 percent, can be supplied on average. As for blood donation among youth, it currently accounts for only 11 percent of total donors, compared to 24 percent before the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the private sector has a crucial responsibility in raising awareness among youth about the significance of blood donation, as there are patients in need of blood every second.

image2 23

It is important to note that blood donation is not detrimental to the donor’s health. Donating 350-450 cc of blood at a time constitutes approximately 10-12% of the total blood volume in the body. Post-donation, the bone marrow will continuously produce new blood cells to replenish the lost supply. It is recommended that donors take iron supplements, one tablet per day after meals, until the prescribed amount provided by the Red Cross is consumed. This measure compensates for the iron lost during blood donation, enabling regular and sustainable donation practices.

BANGKOKThailand marked a historic milestone as 1,832 same-sex couples registered their marriages nationwide on January 23, 2025, the first day of the Marriage Equality Act implementation. According to Naruemit Pride Co., Ltd., organizers of Bangkok Pride, the registrations included 616 male couples, 1,216 female couples, and 960 male-female couples. Bangkok alone recorded 654 registrations across its districts.

At Siam Paragon’s Marriage Equality Day celebration, 185 couples registered their marriages. The event attracted LGBTQ+ couples, Thai celebrities, and diplomatic representatives, including officials from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, representing Taiwan, Asia’s first territory to legalize marriage equality.

Thailand has become the third place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, after Taiwan (2019) and Nepal (2023), and the first in Southeast Asia. The Marriage Equality Act took effect on January 23, 2025, allowing LGBTQ+ couples to register their marriages with full legal rights and protections.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, sent a video message celebrating this milestone. She thanked former PM Srettha Thavisin, parliament members from both government and opposition parties, senators, media, and LGBTQ+ activists for their contributions to passing the law.

Former PM Srettha Thavisin, speaking at the event, emphasized Thailand’s inclusivity, contrasting it with recent statements from another country’s leader who recognized only two genders. He noted that despite Thailand’s smaller economy, its “heart is bigger.” He also apologized to an elderly couple, aged 63 and 78, acknowledging the long wait for marriage equality, stating “Better late than never.”

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt pledged continued support for the law’s implementation and celebrated Thailand’s diversity. “The significance goes beyond marriage equality – it reflects the spirit of embracing everyone, including those of diverse genders, beliefs, and religions. This is Thailand’s strength – creating a safe space for all. Thank you to everyone who helped push this forward, making Bangkok a more livable city,” he said.

The UN Human Rights Office for South-East Asia welcomed the act, which ensures equal rights for all couples regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation, including medical care, property, inheritance, taxation, and adoption rights.

The law also raises the legal marriage age to eighteen, aligning with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. While celebrating this progress, the UN encouraged Thailand to further advance equality through anti-discrimination and gender recognition legislation, noting that LGBTI+ individuals still face discrimination in employment, education, and healthcare.

Ploynapat Jirasukorn, 33, and Kwanporn Kongphet, 32, who became the first same-sex couple to register their marriage in Bangkok stated that they aim to advocate for expanded LGBTQ+ rights, including adoption and title prefix options that are not yet fully covered under current legislation.

DAVOS — Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra attended the signing ceremony of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in Davos, Switzerland.

The agreement, Thailand’s first FTA under the current government, was signed with EFTA member states Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. Key signatories included Swiss Vice President and Minister of Economy Guy Parmelin, Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth, Liechtenstein’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dominique Hasler, and Iceland’s Permanent Secretary of State Martin Eyjolfsson.

The FTA aims to strengthen economic ties and promote cooperation in advanced technology, human capital development, SME support, and sustainable development between Thailand and EFTA nations.

Commerce Minister Pichai called it a milestone marking Thailand’s return to global trade negotiations after a 10-year hiatus. The deal was concluded within three months under PM Paetongtarn’s government.

The agreement is expected to boost trade and investment between Thailand and EFTA nations, with particular focus on advanced technology, AI, and data centers. In 2024, bilateral trade reached $11.8 billion, representing 1.94% of Thailand’s global trade volume.

Key Thai exports to EFTA include gems, jewelry, watches, seafood products, and electrical components. Major imports comprise medical products, machinery, and scientific equipment.

The FTA requires parliamentary approval and regulatory adjustments, with implementation expected within one year. The commerce ministry will conduct public hearings before submitting the agreement to parliament.

Minister Pichai projected significant investment growth, citing over 1 trillion baht in foreign investment last year. He emphasized this agreement could pave the way for future FTAs with the EU and UAE.

Saudi Crown Prince Says Kingdom Intends to Invest $600 Billion in US During Call with Trump

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s crown prince said Thursday the kingdom wants to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years, comments that came after President Donald Trump earlier put a price tag on returning to the kingdom as his first foreign trip.

Trump’s 2017 trip to Saudi Arabia upended a tradition of U.S. presidents first heading to the United Kingdom as their first trip abroad. It also underscored his administration’s close ties to the rulers of the oil-rich Gulf states as his eponymous real estate company has pursued deals across the region as well.

The comments from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reported early Thursday by the state-run Saudi Press Agency, came in a phone call with Trump.

“The crown prince affirmed the kingdom’s intention to broaden its investments and trade with the United States over the next four years, in the amount of $600 billion, and potentially beyond that,” the report said.

The readout did not elaborate on where those investments and trade could be placed. The U.S. in recent years has increasingly pulled away from relying on Saudi oil exports, which once was the bedrock of their relationship for decades. Saudi sovereign wealth funds have taken large stakes in American businesses while also looking at sports as well.

Saudi Arabia does, however, rely predominantly on U.S.-made weapons and defense systems, which could be a part of the investment.

There was no immediate readout from the White House on the call. It also wasn’t immediately clear if Trump’s call with the crown prince was his first with a foreign leader since re-entering the White House. However, it was the first reported abroad.

The crown prince, the de facto ruler of the oil-rich kingdom, also spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio early Thursday.

On Monday after his inauguration, Trump talked about possibly heading to the kingdom again as his first foreign trip, like he did in 2017.

“The first foreign trip typically has been with the U.K. but … I did it with Saudi Arabia last time because they agreed to buy $450 billion worth of our products,” Trump told journalists in the Oval Office. “If Saudi Arabia wanted to buy another $450 billion or $500 — we’ll up it for all the inflation — I think I’d probably go.”

The 2017 visit to the kingdom set in motion a yearslong boycott of Qatar by four Arab nations, including the kingdom.

Trump maintained close relations with Saudi Arabia, even after Prince Mohammed was implicated in the 2018 killing and dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. The kingdom also had been talking for years with the Biden administration about a wider deal to diplomatically recognize Israel in exchange for U.S. defense protections and other support.

The $600 billion pledge, which dwarves the gross domestic product of many nations, also comes as the kingdom faces budgetary pressures of its own. Global oil prices remain depressed years after the height of the coronavirus pandemic, affecting the kingdom’s revenues.

Meanwhile, Prince Mohammed also wants to continue his $500 billion project at NEOM, a new city in Saudi Arabia’s western desert on the Red Sea. It also will need to build tens of billions of dollars’ worth of new stadiums and infrastructure ahead of it hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
