DeepSeek’s new AI Chatbot and ChatGPT Answer Sensitive Questions About China Differently

Chatbot

HONG KONG (AP) — Chinese tech startup DeepSeek ’s new artificial intelligence chatbot has sparked discussions about the competition between China and the U.S. in AI development, with many users flocking to test the rival of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

DeepSeek’s AI assistant was the No. 1 downloaded free app on Apple’s iPhone store on Tuesday afternoon and its launch made Wall Street tech superstars’ stocks tumble. Observers are eager to see whether the Chinese company has matched America’s leading AI companies at a fraction of the cost.

The chatbot’s ultimate impact on the AI industry is still unclear, but it appears to censor answers on sensitive Chinese topics, a practice commonly seen on China’s internet. In 2023, China issued regulations requiring companies to conduct a security review and obtain approvals before their products can be publicly launched.

Here are some answers The Associated Press received from DeepSeek’s new chatbot and ChatGPT:

What does Winnie the Pooh mean in China?

For many Chinese, the Winnie the Pooh character is a playful taunt of President Xi Jinping. Chinese censors in the past briefly banned social media searches for the bear in mainland China.

ChatGPT got that idea right. It said Winnie the Pooh had become a symbol of political satire and resistance, often used to mock or criticize Xi. It explained that internet users compared Xi to the bear because of perceived similarities in their physical appearance.

DeepSeek’s chatbot said the bear is a beloved cartoon character that is adored by countless children and families in China, symbolizing joy and friendship.

Then, abruptly, it said the Chinese government is “dedicated to providing a wholesome cyberspace for its citizens.” It added that all online content is managed under Chinese laws and socialist core values, with the aim of protecting national security and social stability.

Who is the current US president?

It might be easy for many people to answer, but both AI chatbots mistakenly said Joe Biden, whose term ended last week, because they said their data was last updated in October 2023. But they both tried to be responsible by reminding users to verify with updated sources.

What happened during the military crackdown in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in June 1989?

The 1989 crackdown saw government troops open fire on student-led pro-democracy protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, resulting in hundreds, if not thousands, of deaths. The event remains a taboo subject in mainland China.

DeepSeek’s chatbot answered, “Sorry, that’s beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else.”

But ChatGPT gave a detailed answer on what it called “one of the most significant and tragic events” in modern Chinese history. The chatbot talked about the background of the massive protests, the estimated casualties and their legacy.

What is the state of US-China relations?

DeepSeek’s chatbot’s answer echoed China’s official statements, saying the relationship between the world’s two largest economies is one of the most important bilateral relationships globally. It said China is committed to developing ties with the U.S. based on mutual respect and win-win cooperation.

“We hope that the United States will work with China to meet each other halfway, properly manage differences, promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and push forward the healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations,” it said.

Some of these phrases — “meet … halfway,” “mutual respect” and “win-win cooperation” — mirror language used by a Chinese Foreign Ministry official in a 2021 news conference.

ChatGPT’s answer was more nuanced. It said the state of the U.S.-China relationship is complex, characterized by a mix of economic interdependence, geopolitical rivalry and collaboration on global issues. It highlighted key topics including the two countries’ tensions over the South China Sea and Taiwan, their technological competition and more.

“The relationship between the U.S. and China remains tense but crucial,” part of its answer said.

Is Taiwan part of China?

Again — like the Chinese official narrative — DeepSeek’s chatbot said Taiwan has been an integral part of China since ancient times. An example of a very similar statement is found in this government document issued in 2022.

“Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are connected by blood, jointly committed to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,” the chatbot said.

ChatGPT said the answer depends on one’s perspective, while laying out China and Taiwan’s positions and the views of the international community. It said from a legal and political standpoint, China claims Taiwan is part of its territory and the island democracy operates as a “de facto independent country” with its own government, economy and military.

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT — The Thai Cabinet has approved a proposal to nominate Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, a historic Buddhist temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, for UNESCO World Heritage status. The nomination highlights the temple’s exceptional cultural value and its 1,500-year history as a significant religious center in Southeast Asia.

Deputy government spokesperson Nukul Prueksanusak announced that the temple meets crucial UNESCO criteria, demonstrating outstanding cultural exchange across various religious traditions. The temple complex showcases architectural influences from Hinduism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Theravada Buddhism, reflecting cultural connections with India, Sri Lanka, and southern Myanmar.

“The temple’s architecture represents a remarkable fusion of various styles, including Javanese, Central Thai, Sri Lankan, and Mon artistic traditions,” Prueksanusak explained. “This diversity perfectly illustrates the rich religious and architectural exchanges that have shaped the region.”

The temple complex, centered around its iconic stupa, continues to serve as a vital religious and cultural hub. It maintains numerous unique local traditions, including the ceremonial wrapping of cloth around the stupa, Nora dance performances, ancestral worship rituals, Brahmanical ceremonies, and various local art forms.

Ceremony of Wrapping Cloth Around the Great Stupa is an ancient Buddhist tradition that has been passed down through generations. During this ceremony, which takes place on Makha Bucha Day, devotees wrap sacred cloth around the Great Relics Stupa.

The nomination process will involve detailed analysis of legal frameworks for protection and management, including national laws on ancient monuments, urban planning regulations, and building control acts. The government anticipates that UNESCO World Heritage status would significantly boost tourism, with visitor numbers expected to increase by approximately 35% post-registration.

Chaichana Dejdecho, Democrat Party deputy leader and MP for Nakhon Si Thammarat, expressed the local community’s excitement about the nomination, which comes after a decade-long wait since the site’s inclusion on UNESCO’s tentative list in 2013. “This nomination represents a crucial step in recognizing our rich cultural heritage,” Dejdecho stated.

The nomination documents will be submitted to the World Heritage Center in France by February 1, with initial review results expected by March 1, 2025. If approved, UNESCO experts will conduct a detailed year-long study, followed by an on-site inspection in early 2026. The final decision will be made by the UNESCO committee following these evaluations.

The nominated site encompasses the temple’s entire grounds, including both the Buddhist sanctuary (Buddhavas) and the monks’ living quarters (Sanghavas), with the ancient stupa serving as the central monument. This sacred structure has undergone multiple restorations since its original construction, maintaining its significance as a living cultural and religious center.

Local officials anticipate that World Heritage status would not only preserve this important cultural site but also stimulate the local economy through increased tourism, creating new opportunities for local businesses and strengthening community appreciation for their cultural heritage.

Thai-Irish Couple Reports Swiss Man Over Restaurant Confrontation

Thai-Irish
A Thai-Irish couple file a police report at Bang Saphan Police Station in Prachuap Khiri Khan on Jan. 27, 2025 following an alleged verbal assault at a local restaurant.

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN — A Thai-Irish couple has filed a police report at Bang Saphan Police Station in Prachuap Khiri Khan following an alleged verbal assault by a dog owner at a local restaurant.

Mrs. Panicha, 55, and her Irish husband, 71, residents of Moo 1, Phong Prasat Subdistrict, reported the incident that occurred with Mr. Mathias, a Swiss national who has been previously complained about for letting his dogs roam unleashed.

According to the Irish husband, on January 24 at approximately 7:30 p.m., while dining with his wife and friends at a restaurant, Mr. Mathias approached their table and allegedly verbally abused them twice in an aggressive manner. The situation escalated until restaurant staff had to intervene. Concerned for their safety, the couple decided to file a police report.

CCTV footage shows the moment when the Swiss man approached and verbally confronted the Irish man at the restaurant on January 24, 2025.

The couple believes the confrontation stemmed from their recent complaint to the Phong Prasat Subdistrict Administrative Organization about Mr. Mathias allowing his dogs to roam freely on the beach, causing fear among local residents and tourists at Ban Suan Luang beach. This practice reportedly continued despite a municipal order prohibiting dogs on the beach.

Police Lieutenant Ek-in Sonpromhom, the investigating officer, stated that authorities will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and proceed with appropriate legal actions.

The conflict between the dog owner and local residents began last year when a foreigner was bitten by dogs and many people were chased and barked at by a pack of dogs, significantly impacting the region’s tourism revenue. Locals report that visitors have been avoiding Suan Luang Beach due to safety concerns.

Subsequently, local officials intervened to mediate. The Pong Prasad SAO ordered Mathias to remove his dogs from the area pending legal resolution, but Mathias’s lawyer has filed an appeal to contest this decision.

China Detains Suspect in Human Trafficking Cases Linked to Online Scam Networks in Myanmar

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities have detained a key suspect in human trafficking cases linked to online scam networks near the borders of Myanmar and Thailand, China’s Ministry of Public Security said, weeks after the high-profile disappearance of an actor sparked safety concerns.

The suspect, surnamed Yan, was captured through the joint efforts of the ministry, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand and Thai law enforcement officers, it said. Yan had returned to China on Saturday and an investigation is ongoing, it said in a statement late Sunday.

It vowed to deepen law enforcement cooperation with other countries and spare no effort in arresting suspects in the scam networks.

Earlier this month, Chinese actor Wang Xing was lured by a promise of an acting opportunity and traveled to Thailand but instead was taken across the border into Myanmar, where police believe he was put to work in a call scam operation targeting Chinese people, Thai police said.

Wang was eventually sent back to China, but his case has sparked fears about travel to Thailand among many Chinese, clouding the Southeast Asian country’s tourism prospects during the Lunar New Year holidays, which begin Tuesday.

Wang Xing
Wang Xing shakes hands with Pol. Gen. Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, director of Thailand’s anti-trafficking center (TICAC), thanking him for helping cross the natural border back to Mae Sot district, Tak province, on January 7, 2025.

Last week, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra used a video generated by artificial intelligence to assure Chinese tourists that her government is boosting security and attaches great importance to the safety of tourists.

But a series of recent human trafficking cases has already harmed Thai tourism.

A concert by Hong Kong pop star Eason Chan in Bangkok in February was canceled due to safety concerns for Chinese citizens. Users on China’s Weibo social media platform also expressed fears about visiting Thailand.

Criminal activity has flourished in border areas of military-ruled Myanmar, where fighting has pitted armed ethnic groups against the army for decades.

Chinese authorities say they have cracked down on criminal syndicates in joint operations with neighboring countries, leading to thousands of people being returned to China, but those campaigns did not include arrests of ring leaders in Myanmar.

People from Malaysia and the Philippines lured by job offerings in Myanmar have also been forced to work in call centers against their will.

Chinese investors operate casino complexes in Myanmar in what amounts to autonomous development zones in cooperation with Myanmar’s Border Guard Force, a militia belonging to the ethnic Karen minority.

Lady of the Hills’ Mother Reacts to British Son-in-Law’s Arrest in Thailand

UDON THANI — Thai immigration police and the Department of Special Investigation have apprehended David Armitage, 62, a British national suspected in the mysterious death of “Lady of the Hills,” a Thai woman who found in Yorkshire Dales National Park, U.K. in 2004. “Lady of the Hills” was later identified as Lamduan Seekanya from Phen district, Udon Thani province. She got married with Armitage in 1990.

In an emotional interview with Khaosod reporter on January 26, Lamduan’s 80-year-old mother, Joomsri Seekanya, spoke from her modest home behind a temple in Udon Thani, where she now lives with her husband and grandson. Lamduan was the eldest of her six children.

“I only learned about David’s arrest when journalists called me,” Joomsri said, wiping away tears. “I’ve always believed he was involved. My daughter told me about the physical abuse she endured. The last time I saw her was in 2004 when she visited with David. Then we heard nothing until news came of her death on the mountain.”

Thai authorities have arrested David Armitage, 62, at his residence in Nong Bua district, Kanchanaburi province on Jan. 23, 2025.

Joomsri described her daughter as an innocent person who never had conflicts with anyone. “I had a strange feeling when she first went to England. It was as if she would never return,” she recalled.

After 20 years of separation, Joomsri expressed gratitude to the police for bringing the person suspected in her daughter’s death to justice. “If my daughter’s spirit can hear me, I want to tell her to rest in peace. If reincarnation exists, I hope she becomes a celestial being rather than returning as a human to face such suffering in a world lacking moral principles.”

Authorities arrested Armitage, Lamduan’s husband, at a residence in Kanchanaburi province on January 23, 2025. Immigration officials have revoked his permission to stay in Thailand under Section 12(7) of the Immigration Act 1979. He is currently being held pending proceedings under both immigration laws and the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between Thailand and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, North Yorkshire Police acknowledged Armitage’s detention in Thailand on January 25, stating it was related to his immigration status.

“We are aware of the detention in Thailand of David Armitage, the husband of Lamduan Armitage. We understand it relates to his visa status and residence in Thailand and is entirely a matter for the Immigration Service of the Royal Thai Police.

“Should Mr Armitage be deported, we understand that he will have a choice as to where he goes, which will include return to the UK. Should that occur, we will again make every effort to speak to him about the investigation.”

Chinese Tourists Pay Restaurant Bill After Udon Thani Police Intervention

UDON THANI — A Chinese family of 12 has paid their 9,480-baht ($280) dinner bill after police tracked them down to a local hotel following their dine and dash incident at a Korean restaurant.

Mr. Suvanthone, 27, manager of Koki Korean Restaurant’s UD Town branch in Mueang Udon Thani, reported the incident to local police on January 26. The group had ordered premium menu items including beef ribs, marbled sirloin, snow beef, and Korean chicken soup.

According to Mr. Suvanthone’s statement, the tourist group arrived at 7:00 p.m. and left the restaurant during a busy period at 8:45 p.m. without paying. “Initially, we thought they were just going to the restroom as they had been walking in and out throughout their meal,” Suvanthone explained. CCTV footage showed the group leaving together, with one male member departing last after appearing to check for security cameras.

“This is our first dine-and-dash incident since opening three months ago,” said Suvanthone, who faced paying the bill himself – equivalent to his monthly salary – if the customers weren’t found.

The following day, Police Lt. Col. Banjong Phakhot led an investigation team to a prominent hotel where the Chinese family was staying. When confronted about the unpaid bill, the Chinese tourists laughed and spoke in Chinese before quickly producing nine 1,000-baht notes and one 500-baht note, totaling 9,480 baht, to settle their debt. Police witnessed the payment transaction.

The restaurant manager is now relieved after receiving help from the police.

White House Says Colombia Agrees to Take Deported Migrants after Trump Tariff Showdown

Colombia

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — The White House claimed victory in a showdown with Colombia over accepting flights of deported migrants from the U.S. on Sunday, hours after President Donald Trump threatened steep tariffs on imports and other sanctions on the longtime U.S. partner.

Long close partners in anti-narcotics efforts, the U.S. and Colombia clashed Sunday over the deportation of migrants and imposed tariffs on each other’s goods in a show of what other countries could face if they intervene in the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. The White House held up the episode as a warning to other nations who might seek to impede his plans.

Earlier, the U.S. president had ordered visa restrictions, 25% tariffs on all Colombian incoming goods, which would be raised to 50% in one week, and other retaliatory measures sparked by President Gustavo Petro’s decision to reject two Colombia-bound U.S. military aircraft carrying migrants after Petro accused Trump of not treating immigrants with dignity during deportation. Petro also announced a retaliatory 25% increase in Colombian tariffs on U.S. goods.

Trump said the measures were necessary because Petro’s decision “jeopardized” national security in the U.S. by blocking the deportation flights.

“These measures are just the beginning,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States.”

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a late Sunday statement that the “Government of Colombia has agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay.”

Leavitt said the tariff orders will be “held in reserve, and not signed.” But Leavitt said Trump would maintain visa restrictions on Colombian officials and enhanced customs inspections of goods from the country, “until the first planeload of Colombian deportees is successfully returned.”

The Colombian government late Sunday said it considered as “overcome” the episode with the Trump administration and Petro reposted the statement from the White House on X.

“We have overcome the impasse with the United States government,” said Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo. “We will continue to receive Colombians who return as deportees, guaranteeing them decent conditions as citizens subject to rights.”

Murillo added that the South American country’s presidential aircraft is available to facilitate the return of migrants who were to arrive hours earlier on the U.S. military airplanes.

Earlier Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced he was authorizing the visa restrictions on Colombian government officials and their families “who were responsible for the interference of U.S. repatriation flight operations.” They were being imposed on top of the State Department’s move to suspend the processing of visas at the U.S. Embassy in Colombia’s capital, Bogota.

Petro had said earlier that his government would not accept flights carrying migrants deported from the U.S. until the Trump administration creates a protocol that treats them with “dignity.” Petro made the announcement in two X posts, one of which included a news video of migrants reportedly deported to Brazil walking on a tarmac with restraints on their hands and feet.

“A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves,” Petro said. “That is why I returned the U.S. military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants… In civilian planes, without being treated like criminals, we will receive our fellow citizens.”

After Trump’s earlier tariff threat, Petro said in a post on X that he had ordered the “foreign trade minister to raise import tariffs from the U.S. by 25%.”

Colombia has traditionally been the U.S.’s top ally in Latin America. But their relationship has strained since Petro, a former guerrilla, became Colombia’s first leftist president in 2022 and sought distance from the U.S.

Colombia accepted 475 deportation flights from the U.S. from 2020 to 2024, fifth behind Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador, according to Witness at the Border, an advocacy group that tracks flight data. It accepted 124 deportation flights in 2024.

Colombia is also among the countries that last year began accepting U.S.-funded deportation flights from Panama.

The U.S. government didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press regarding aircraft and protocols used in deportations to Colombia.

“This is a clear message we are sending that countries have an obligation to accept repatriation flights,” a senior administration official told AP. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss issue publicly.

Rubio in a statement said Petro “canceled his authorization” for the flights when the aircraft were in the air.

Colombians emerged in recent years as a major presence on the U.S. border with Mexico, aided in part by a visa regime that allows them to easily fly to Mexico and avoid trekking though the treacherous Darien Gap. They ranked fourth with 127,604 arrests for illegal crossings during a 12-month period through September, behind Mexicans, Guatemalans and Venezuelans.

Mexico hasn’t imposed visa restrictions on Colombians, as they have on Venezuelans, Ecuadoreans and Peruvians.

Petro’s government in a statement later announced that the South American country’s presidential aircraft had been made available to facilitate the return of migrants who were to arrive hours earlier on the U.S. military airplanes and guarantee them “dignified conditions.”

As part of a flurry of actions to make good on Trump’s campaign promises to crack down on illegal immigration, his government is using active-duty military to help secure the border and carry out deportations.

Two U.S. Air Force C-17 cargo planes carrying migrants removed from the U.S. touched down early Friday in Guatemala. That same day, Honduras received two deportation flights carrying a total of 193 people.

Colombia is the U.S.’s fourth-largest overseas supplier of crude oil, shipping about 209,000 barrels of oil per day last year, although booming domestic production has reduced the U.S.’ dependence on foreign oil. The South American country is also the U.S.’s largest supplier of fresh cut flowers.
