Ayutthaya Twin Elephants Unite in Wedding Ceremony

Twin Elephants, Plai Supphalak Sophon (male) and Pang Sakonlak Sophit (female) are taken to attend their traditional Thai wedding ceremony at Peniat Royal Elephant Village in Ayutthaya Province on November 7, 2024.

AYUTTHAYA — In an extraordinary cultural celebration, male and female elephant twins participated in a traditional Thai wedding ceremony at Peniat Royal Elephant Village in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province on November 7.

The ceremony, known as “Kachasan Sayomphon,” united Plai Supphalak Sophon (male) and Pang Sakonlak Sophit (female) in accordance with ancient Thai beliefs about mixed-gender twins that they were destined to be together in their past lives.

The elaborate ceremony, attended by politicians and business leaders, featured a traditional procession of 99 couples bearing wedding offerings. The dowry, totaling 4,444,499 baht (approximately $125,000), will be allocated to a fund for the twins’ future care.

The traditional wedding procession arrives at Peniat Royal Elephant Village in Ayutthaya province on November 7, 2024, led by MP Songrak Sermudomchai and business leaders Thanyasak and Chattheeraya Kittirattanapaisan.

The ceremony was presided over by Songrak Sermudomchai, a member of parliament from Nakhon Sawan province, along with business leaders Thanyasak and Chattheeraya Kittirattanapaisan, who served as ceremonial sponsors. The procession passed through symbolic silver and gold arches before culminating in merit-making ceremonies and Buddhist blessings.

The twin elephants were born on June 7, 2024, to their 30-year-old mother, Chamchuri, marking a rare occurrence in elephant breeding history.

The male calf emerged first at 9:00 p.m., displaying remarkable strength by standing within minutes of birth. His sister followed 18 minutes later, though the birth was complicated by the mother’s agitated state, resulting in injury to one mahout who attempted to protect the newborn.

Laithongrearn Meephan, owner of the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal, noted the historical significance of the births. “This is the first recorded case of male-female elephant twins in Thailand,” he said emotionally. “Previous records only showed same-sex twins.”

The twins were born to father Plai Siam and mother Pang Chamchuri, who has now given birth five times over 27 years.

China Is Bracing for Fresh Tensions with Trump Over Trade, Tech and Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — The first time China faced Donald Trump in the White House, there was a trade war, a breach of protocol involving Taiwan’s former leader, and a president-to-president bromance that turned sour.

As President-elect Trump prepares to start his second term in office, China is bracing for unpredictability in its ties with the United States and renewed tensions over trade, technology and Taiwan.

A new tariff war looms

Perhaps the biggest consequence for China — if Trump stays true to his campaign promises — is his threat to slap blanket 60% tariffs on all Chinese exports to the U.S.

Tariffs like that would be a blow to China’s already unstable economy, which is suffering from high youth unemployment, a lengthy property slump and government debt. A 60% duty on Chinese imports could shave off 2.5 percentage points, or about half, of China’s projected economic growth, according to an analysis published earlier this year by UBS.

During Trump’s previous term in office, the U.S. imposed tariffs on more than $360 billion of Chinese products. That brought Beijing to the negotiating table, and in 2020 the two sides signed a trade deal in which China committed to improve intellectual property rights and buy an extra $200 billion of American goods. A research group a couple of years later showed China had bought essentially none of the goods it had promised.

President Joe Biden retained most of those tariffs and added fresh duties this year on imports including steel, solar cells and electric vehicles.

Like last time, tariffs could serve as a tool to force Beijing back to the negotiating table, said Henry Gao, a law professor at Singapore Management University who focuses on international trade.

“Given the weak economic position of China this time, I think there will be more willingness to talk,” he said. “Thus, while the tariff might have some short-term effects on the Chinese economy, the situation might improve once they reach a deal.”

Factoring into the trade talks could be Trump’s appeals to Chinese President Xi Jinping to help negotiate a resolution to the Ukraine war, which Trump has boasted he’ll be able to do quickly, without saying how.

Trump previously sought Xi’s help in dealing with North Korea’s rogue leader Kim Jong Un. That dynamic could repeat itself, with Trump weighing trade grievances against seeking China’s support in global crises, according to Wang Huiyao, founder of the Beijing-based think tank Center for China and Globalization.

“China is the largest trading partner of both Russia and Ukraine,” Wang wrote in a recent commentary. “These close economic ties give China a unique opportunity to play a greater role in peace-making efforts.”

Willing to go ‘crazy’ over Taiwan

There is one scenario in which Trump has threatened to impose even higher tariffs — 150% to 200% — on Chinese goods: if China invades Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy that Beijing claims as its own.

The U.S. does not recognize Taiwan as a country, but is its strongest backer and biggest arms provider.

Trump angered Beijing in December 2016 by taking a congratulatory call from Taiwan’s then-president Tsai Ing-wen in a breach of diplomatic protocol. No U.S. president had spoken directly to a Taiwanese leader since Washington and Beijing established ties in 1979.

Trump’s move created anxiety in China-watching circles, but ultimately, he stuck to supporting the status quo in relations between Taipei and Beijing.

China expects him to continue to do so, said Zhu Feng, dean of the School of International Relations at Nanjing University.

“Will (he) want to turn to support Taiwan independence? It is unlikely,” he said.

As for China’s repeated threats to annex Taiwan, Trump told The Wall Street Journal last month that he would not have to use military force to prevent a blockade of Taiwan because Xi “respects me and he knows I’m (expletive) crazy.”

On the campaign trail, Trump sometimes talked up his personal connection with Xi, which started exuberantly during his first term but soured over disputes about trade and the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Trump has also said that Taiwan should pay the U.S. for defending it against China, likening the relationship to insurance. Taiwan spends about 2.5% of its GDP on defense, and purchased hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of U.S. weapons this year.

Trump has purposely maintained a sense of uncertainty in his relationship with China, said Da Wei, director of the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

“We are clear about the challenges,” he said. “As for opportunities, we are yet to see them clearly.”

Disputes over chips

During his first term, Trump began targeting Chinese technology firms over security concerns, focusing on large companies like the telecoms giant Huawei. Biden continued in that direction by placing curbs on China’s access to advanced semiconductors, which are needed to develop strategic industries such as artificial intelligence.

But Trump has criticized Biden’s CHIPS and Science Act, a bipartisan bill that earmarked $53 billion to build up domestic manufacturing of semiconductors. Currently, Taiwan produces nearly 90% of the world’s supply of the most advanced chips.

The island’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, TSMC, expanded production in Arizona, partly to respond to the CHIPS Act, and to be prepared to withstand any other protectionist policies in the U.S., said Shihoko Goto, director of the Indo-Pacific Program at the Wilson Center.

Trump has promised to do away with the CHIPS Act, though critics say that would undermine his campaign to reindustrialize the U.S. The president-elect has also accused Taiwan of “stealing” the chip industry from the U.S. decades ago.

“Rather than providing a silicon shield, Taiwan’s dominance in the chip industry could actually be the source of tension between Taipei and Trump, as Taiwan’s successes in the chip sector may be seen as having only been possible as a result of the United States being taken advantage of,” Goto said.

Bangkok Police Retain Posts After Chinese-Only Gambling Den Bust

Police raid a building in Sahakarn Pramoon Soi, Wang Thonglang District, where Chinese and Taiwanese nationals were caught gambling together on November 5, 2024.

BANGKOK — In a departure from usual protocol, senior police officers at Bangkok’s Wang Thonglang Police Station will retain their positions following a recent gambling den raid, as investigators found no evidence of negligence in their duties.

Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengswang, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, announced on November 6 that preliminary investigations showed no oversight failures, emphasizing the importance of maintaining officer morale.

The case began after citizens reported suspicious activity at a building in Sahakarn Pramoon Soi, Wang Thonglang district. A joint operation involving the Children and Women’s Welfare Division, Metropolitan Police Investigation Division, and Wang Thonglang Police Station deployed undercover officers to investigate.

Investigators discovered the operation was run by Chinese nationals exclusively for Chinese clientele, with plans to expand to other locations in areas with significant Chinese populations.

Shortly before midnight on November 5, authorities raided the premises, arresting 21 individuals: 13 Chinese nationals, 4 Taiwanese, and 4 Thai citizens. The group comprised 17 men and 4 women.

Evidence seized included: 396 black chips (worth 10,000 baht each), 228 yellow chips (worth 1,000 baht each), 396 red chips (worth 500 baht each), 12 green chips, 12 clear chips, 2 decks of cards, and 4 chip exchange rate sheets.

The suspects were charged with illegal gambling operations and participation in unauthorized gambling activities. All defendants admitted to gambling charges but denied any involvement with narcotics.

Commissioner Thiti explained that the establishment’s exclusive nature – serving only Chinese clients through Chinese connections – had made it difficult for local police to detect. He noted that areas like Wang Thonglang, Huai Khwang, and Sutthisan have seen an influx of foreign investment, creating opportunities for illegal operations.

“While we must thoroughly investigate such cases and take disciplinary action when negligence is found, we must also ensure fairness when officers have performed their duties properly,” Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti concluded.

Russian Woman Admits to Pattaya Market Stabbing, Cites Love Triangle

Miss Luliia surrendered to police at the Pattaya City Police investigation room, accompanied by her private attorney on November 6, 2024.

PATTAYA — A Russian woman turned herself in after a midnight market stabbing, citing her rival’s year-long jealousy as the motive.

Pattaya Police and Tourist Police have apprehended a Russian woman following a shocking incident where she stabbed another Russian woman with a sharp knife in front of Night Plaza Market, Moo 12, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province, around midnight on Wednesday.

After reviewing market surveillance footage and questioning witnesses, Pattaya City Police investigators and Tourist Police identified the assailant as Miss Luliia, 32, who stabbed her fellow Russian national Miss Natalia, 49, causing serious injuries to her stomach and arms before fleeing the scene.

Authorities initially checked the suspect’s residence, located just 700 meters from the incident, but she wasn’t found there.

A witness named Kee recounted that as the market was closing, he observed a group of Russian tourists, both men and women, drinking together. He noticed Luliia and Natalia arguing before Luliia walked away for about 10 minutes and then returned.

The argument intensified upon her return, culminating in Luliia stabbing Natalia multiple times until market vendors intervened. Luliia escaped during the chaos. Another witness, a market staff member, suggested the incident was motivated by jealousy.

Market officials stated they would implement additional security measures to prevent similar incidents and maintain visitor confidence.

CCTV footage from 11:55 p.m. on November 5 showed Luliia walking past cameras with what appeared to be a weapon concealed near her waist before approaching Natalia and initiating the attack.

At 4:00 p.m. on November 6, Luliia surrendered to police at the Pattaya City Police investigation room, accompanied by her private attorney. She admitted to the attack, citing a love triangle as the motive.

She revealed that in February this year, she had a brief relationship with Natalia’s husband, which ended after discovery. However, Natalia continued to confront and physically assault her whenever they met, leading to ongoing conflicts for nearly a year.

On the night of the incident, Luliia claimed she tried to greet Natalia and her husband at the market, but Natalia attempted to assault her and pulled her hair. Angry, she left but returned 10 minutes later hoping to resolve the situation. When Natalia allegedly attacked her again, Luliia, under the influence of alcohol and anger, stabbed her.

After questioning, police handed Luliia over to investigators, who have yet to file formal charges pending medical documentation of the victim’s injuries.

Princess Ubol Ratana Unveils Vision for Amazing Thailand 2025

Ubol Ratana
Thunkramom Ying Ubol Ratana Rajakanya shared her views on promoting Thai tourism in London on November 5, 2024.

LONDON — Thunkramom Ying Ubol Ratana Rajakanya shared her views on promoting Thai tourism in an interview after chairing the Amazing Thailand Night: Royal Gala Dinner 2024 in London, United Kingdom. This event was held in conjunction with the World Travel Market (WTM) 2024 from November 5-7 at ExCel London.

She began by mentioning “Moo Deng”, the famous pygmy hippo that has gained worldwide popularity, calling it a unique phenomenon with a positive impact on Thailand’s economy, society and culture. She jokingly added that if Moo Deng had not “withdrawn” from the race for the US presidency, she would have even received 91% of the vote.

“Moo Deng’s cuteness has sparked a phenomenon with tourists flocking to Thailand in droves. One American YouTuber, for example, flew 18 hours just to see Moo Deng for five minutes. She has already visited him twice. It’s an incredibly exciting event,” said Thunkramom Ying Ubol Ratana.

Moo Deng

She suggested that Thailand should use Moo Deng’s fame to attract tourists to Chonburi, where the pygmy hippo lives at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, as well as other surrounding provinces. Besides visiting the zoo, travelers in Chonburi can also enjoy the beach and fresh seafood. She also praised the director of Khao Kheow Zoo, noting that Moo Deng’s keeper is an experienced TikToker who has helped raise the hippo’s international fame.

In addition to promoting tourism, she called for this opportunity to be used to inspire children about animals and conservation and to encourage a movement towards sustainability as part of the country’s environmental awareness.

Thunkramom Ying Ubol Ratana said that sustainability tourism serves as a “vaccine” for tourism, especially as people become increasingly aware of how climate change is affecting us. She mentioned recent natural disasters such as flash floods in Chiang Rai and Spain. She emphasized the need for tourism to shift towards environmentally friendly practices and advocated for a shared responsibility for sustainable tourism.

ubon rattana1

She pointed out that eco-friendly tourism includes not throwing waste into the sea, walking and cycling to explore nature in a more sustainable way. She urged tourists to embrace nature-friendly activities because without natural resources, there are no tourist attractions and no tourism revenue. This is why awareness of sustainable tourism is so important.

For the “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025”, she advocated impressing and “wowing” everyone, especially as Thailand’s tourism industry recovers after COVID-19. Ubolratana called for special tourism experiences that remind visitors of Thailand and make them want to come back.

“We ask all Thai citizens to be gracious hosts and make Thailand a desirable destination that tourists will want to visit again. We invite tourists to experience the unique charm of Thailand, from Thai smiles and cuisine to Muay Thai and fashion shows. They can enjoy Thai textiles, see Moo Deng and participate in numerous festivals that get better every year,” she said.

teddy

She also highlighted the development of Thai textiles, describing them as a form of Thailand’s “soft power” that reflects the unique culture of each region. Thai silk, mudmee silk, praewa silk and natural indigo-dyed fabrics, such as those from Phrae province, all have distinctive characteristics. She mentioned that the integration of new technologies could improve the production of Thai textiles and enable innovative designs that showcase local cultures.

In addition, she emphasized how Thai textiles can be developed into products that have intergenerational appeal, such as clothes for dolls and art toys, so that they are accessible to people of different genders and ages. In this context, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) organized a campaign where the house’s teddy bears were dressed in various Thai textiles, including Muay Thai, LGBTQ+ Pride and Loy Krathong, to demonstrate the “soft power” of Thai culture.

Trump Calls on Country to Unite in Election Night Speech

trump

Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday, an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.

He made sure to recognize GOP wins in down ballot races in his speech in the early morning Wednesday after capturing three of the seven heavily contested battlegrounds, Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina.

With a win in Wisconsin, Trump cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency.

The victory validates his bare-knuckle approach to politics. He attacked his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, in deeply personal — often misogynistic and racist — terms as he pushed an apocalyptic picture of a country overrun by violent migrants.

The coarse rhetoric, paired with an image of hypermasculinity, resonated with angry voters — particularly men — in a deeply polarized nation. As president, he’s vowed to pursue an agenda centered on dramatically reshaping the federal government and retribution against his perceived enemies.

Trump, someone whose political career has been defined by division and acrimony, told the audience at his election night party early on Wednesday that it was “time to unite” as a country.

“It’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us,” Trump said. “It’s time to unite.”

“We have to put our country first for at least a period of time,” he added. “We have to fix it.”

Most of the important people in Trump’s personal and political life have joined him on stage in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Former first lady Melania Trump stood near her husband and was joined by Barron, the former president’s youngest son. Trump’s older children, Don Jr., Eric, Ivanka and Tiffany, all joined their father on stage, too.

Trump’s top political minds, including top campaign advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, joined Trump on stage. And his political allies were on stage, too, including House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Trump also celebrated a few celebrities in the audience and on stage. Dana White, the CEO of UFC, was on stage with Trump, and the former president called golfer Bryson DeChambeau on stage. Trump also shouted out Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X, who has become one of his most high-profile supporters. “We have a new star. A star is born: Elon,” Trump said.

He promised that he would “not rest until we have delivered the strong safe and prosperous America.”

“Every single day,” Trump said, “I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body.”

Meanwhile, Republicans reclaimed control of the Senate, picking up seats in West Virginia and Ohio. Top House races are focused in New York and California, where Democrats are trying to claw back some of the 10 or so seats where Republicans have made surprising gains in recent years.

Republicans have so far won 51 seats, giving them a majority. But Montana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Nevada have not been called, and it’s possible Republicans could pick up more seats.

“The number of victories in the senate was absolutely incredible,” Trump said.

Trump also said he expected Republicans to hold the House and complimented House Speaker Mike Johnson. The House, however, is still up for grabs.

There are over 70 House races across the country that have not been called, and neither party has a convincing edge in the tally of House races.

World leaders offer their congratulations to Trump

The AP’s current count has Trump three electoral votes shy of winning the White House, though he is leading in key battleground states.

“Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback!” wrote Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on X. “Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America.”

French President Emmanuel Macron posted on X: “Ready to work together as we were able to do during four years. With your convictions and mine. In respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.”

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte says he looks forward to working with Trump “to advance peace through strength” as the former president closes in on the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.

“We face a growing number of challenges globally, from a more aggressive Russia, to terrorism, to strategic competition with China, as well the increasing alignment of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran,” Rutte said.

“Working together through NATO helps to deter aggression, protect our collective security and support our economies,” he added.

Rutte also praised Trump for his work during his first term to persuade U.S. allies in NATO to ramp up defense spending.

He noted that around two-thirds of the 32 NATO allies are due to meet the organization’s main defense spending target this year.

The European Union’s top official says she’s looking forward to working with Trump again as the former president is on the cusp of victory in the U.S. presidential race.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the E.U. and U.S. “are more than just allies. We are bound by a true partnership between our people, uniting 800 million citizens.”

“Let us work together on a transatlantic partnership that continues to deliver for our citizens. Millions of jobs and billions in trade and investment on each side of the Atlantic depend on the dynamism and stability of our economic relationship,” she said in a statement.

The tariffs that Trump slapped on steel and aluminum exports during his last term roiled the bloc’s economy.

Zelenskyy says he appreciates Trump’s ‘peace through strength’ mentality

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he appreciates Trump’s commitment to “peace through strength” as the Republican presidential nominee closes in on the electoral votes needed to win the White House.

“I recall our great meeting with President Trump back in September, when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-U.S. strategic partnership, the Victory Plan, and ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine,” said Zelenskyy on X. Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is interested “in developing mutually beneficial political and economic cooperation that will benefit both of our nations.”

“We look forward to an era of a strong United States of America under President Trump’s decisive leadership,” said Zelenskyy.

“I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer. I am hopeful that we will put it into action together,” he said.

Cannabis Odor Leads Thai Police to Japanese Suspects in Extortion Case

Police raid and arrest two Japanese suspects in an extortion case at a resort in Chonburi province, after detecting cannabis odor emanating from one of their rooms on Nov 5, 2024.

BANGKOK — Two Japanese nationals running a cannabis business in Thailand were arrested in Chonburi Province after police tracked them down through the distinctive smell of marijuana emanating from their resort rooms. The suspects were wanted in connection with a violent extortion case in Bangkok.

The investigation began when a Japanese victim filed complaints at Phaya Thai and Chokchai police stations, reporting that three individuals—two Japanese nationals and one Thai—had kidnapped him and demanded 300,000 baht, allegedly for visa processing fees at Arayaprathet Customs House, Sa Kaeo Province.

According to police reports, when the victim could only pay 135,000 baht, the suspects took him to a secluded field where they threatened his life. They then allegedly held him captive at a hotel near Kaset-Nawamin Road, where he was subjected to severe physical abuse throughout the night and forced to consume excrement in an attempt to extort more money.

The pair had a history of violent behavior, with Mr. Niki known for consuming a potent cannabis blend called “3king.”

Following a court warrant issued on October 17 for extortion charges, authorities located the suspects at a resort in Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province. The investigation team initially struggled to find the exact location until they detected the smell of marijuana, which led them to adjoining rooms where both suspects were staying.

During the arrest, police seized evidence including: 179,000 baht in cash, cannabis smoking paraphernalia, multiple smartphones including iPhone 12, iPhone 13 Pro, and Galaxy A14, two iPads, and bank checkbooks.

In questioning led by Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengswang on November 6, both suspects denied all charges, including allegations of physical abuse. Mr. Niki claimed he moved to Thailand with 1 billion yen ($6.5 million) after facing multiple cannabis-related arrests in Japan, attracted by Thailand’s more lenient cannabis laws. He disclosed operating a cannabis business and an international shipping operation.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had established significant business operations in Thailand, with cash flow reportedly in the hundreds of millions of baht. Police Major General Theeradej Thammasutee, commander of the Investigation Division, stated that authorities are expanding their investigation to examine possible connections to illegal business activities.

Both suspects are currently in custody at Phaya Thai Police Station as the investigation continues.
