Quadlips Shares Their Journey to Make Waves in Asian Idol

BANGKOK — The AKB48 Group Global Project recently introduced ‘Quadlips,’ a sub-unit featuring members from four sister groups across four countries.

The 48 Group has been creating a buzz in the idol industry for many generations, starting in Japan and expanding to countries like the Philippines (MNL48), Indonesia (JKT48), and Thailand (BNK48).

After working together almost 9 months, the four members—Feni Fitriyanti from JKT48, Aomi Hinano from SKE48, Ashley Nicole Somira from MNL48, and Fame Nunthapak Kittirattanaviwat from BNK48—have made a significant impact.

They gained attention from fans both in Thailand and abroad with their three songs: debut single ‘Catch me Kiss me,’ second single ‘Overdrive,’ a special single ‘Overdrive feat. ETC,’ and their latest single, ‘Check List.’

The 4 girls shared their journey with Khaosod English. Fame from BNK48 talked about their latest song, ‘Check List,’ describing it as bright, fresh, and full of energy. She said the song encourages listeners to change, focus on what truly matters, and discover themselves.

The theme of the song is about self-discovery and confidently setting and reviewing life goals. The music video continues the sports theme, this time with a basketball concept. In the video, the four girls look cool as they match the fun rhythm of the song, cheering on basketball players to help them reach their goals.

Feni, the eldest sister, mentioned that “Check List” is different from their first song, “While ‘Catch Me Kiss Me’ encourages people to believe in themselves and embrace who they are, ‘Check List’ brings a new flavor with a hip-hop pop style. They blended their different languages and experiences as idols, with help from Japanese producers, to create this unique song. The music video also highlights the individuality of each member, showcasing their identities and unlocking their hidden potential.

Cole from MNL48, known for her strong vocals, shared more about the ‘Check List’ music video. She explained that the video has a basketball theme represent the extreme sport, giving it a sporty feel. While basketball is usually seen as a men’s sport, the video shows that women can play it too, but with a sporty and feminine style. Fame added that, just like in basketball where you aim to get the ball into the hoop, the song is about setting goals and striving to achieve them in your own way.

Feni talked about the process of selecting the four members is the idea for this unique project was conceived by Superball Company, which aimed to create a sub-unit within the 48 Group by bringing together members from different groups across the network. This project was designed to unite members from various regions and cultures, creating a global group.

Feni explained that the initiative started when Superball Company decided to form a girl group with an Extreme Sports theme. “They looked at our characters and lifestyles to determine who would be a good fit. They wanted to create a group that could embody this theme, so they invited members from different groups who showed interest,” she said.

Fame added that the selection process was collaborative, with companies from each group discussing the project and selecting members based on their personalities and willingness to participate. “It was like having a meeting where the company asked each group’s members if they wanted to join. In the end, the four of us were chosen,” Fame shared.

When asked how this selection process differed from the previous 48 Group sub-units, Feni pointed out the global scale of this project. “Unlike past sub-units, which were usually limited to specific groups or regions, this project is the first to combine members from different countries and cities. It’s a fusion of cultures and backgrounds, making a global unit.”

Fame said that while past sub-units were often specific to one group, this project is groundbreaking in its international scope. “Normally, sub-units are formed within each group, like BNK48’s Qrra. But this time, it’s a global initiative, which makes it different. The executives from each group knew the strengths and characters of their members, so they reached out to those they thought would be a good fit,” she said.

Feni shared that each member of the group has a different personality. She may look like the oldest, while Fame appears cute but is also sporty, like Hina. Cole, besides her powerful singing voice, has a sexy and sporty look. Although they come from different backgrounds, they share common traits. As the oldest and leader of the group, Feni admitted feeling some pressure.

“I want everyone to unite and work together,” she said. This feeling was especially strong at the beginning. Whenever the members had problems, they would come to her for advice. Feni also mentioned that she often talked to the staff to help make the group better.

When asked about the pressure of being part of a separate group from the 48 Group and representing their respective countries, Cole from MNL48 admitted that there was quite a lot of pressure. Many people view them as the best from each 48 Group in their country. However, they turn that pressure into energy, focusing on dedication, training, and teamwork.

Hina from SKE48, who is from Japan, the home of the 48 Group, confessed that speaking English was difficult for her. “In Japan, I hardly used English. I studied it in school, but mostly focused on writing rather than speaking,” she explained. Even though speaking and listening in English is challenging, she is improving and appreciates her group members for their understanding. “My English might not be very good, but I’ll keep trying,” she said.

Fame, the only Thai member of the group, admitted feeling pressured because her fellow members are so talented. As a representative of BNK48, she is determined to do her best. Although she is the youngest in Quadlips, Fame takes on the role of a host, looking after her three sister who are far from home.

“As a Thai, I try to make sure they feel the least homesick,” She shared with a laugh. She takes them on trips, enjoys Thai and Japanese food with them, and hangs out as much as possible, even though she also has to attend University.

When asked about their memorable moments as a QUADLIPS, Fame shared that even though she was still learning to sing, her three senior group members gave her great support, making her feel safe when they were together. She also shared a funny moment from the shooting of the “Check List” music video. She accidentally ate the chicken rice that was prepared for Feni, so she ended up having to treat Feni to a meal to the meal in return.

Feni also invited Thai fans to visit her home country of Indonesia, suggesting two tourist spots: Bali and Lombok. Similarly, the Filipina recommended the Palawan Islands, alongside the well-known Boracay, as another destination that Thai fans might find impressive.
Cole mentioned that being away from her home in the Philippines, she sometimes needed encouragement, and the QUADLIPS family provided that very well. Hina’s most unforgettable moment was performing in Japan and having her family and AKB48 friends there to cheer her on.

When asked what she wanted fans to remember about QUADLIPS, Feni said, “I want fans to remember how much we put into this group. We worked hard, and I want them to remember us as part of the 48 Group.” Cole added, “Since we represent four countries, coming together is challenging.” Fame noted that while fans often see them as cute girls, she hopes they also see QUADLIPS as having a pop or street style.

For their connection with fans, Feni mentioned that they recently held fan meetings in Kuala Lumpur and Japan and plan to have more surprises in the future. Cole shared that they will have fan meetings in as many countries as possible. They also spoil their next single, “Lipstick,” which will have a different mood & tone from previous bright and encouraging songs.

Finally, when asked about their Check List goals, Fame said she wants QUADLIPS to become well-known among Thai people, so when people think of QUADLIPS, they think of four girls from four countries. Cole wants QUADLIPS to inspire fans to be themselves and try new things in their own way.

Feni and Hina both expressed their desire for QUADLIPS to gain more recognition across Asia. This is the ‘Check List’ for the four girls from different backgrounds who come together perfectly as QUADLIPS.

DITP and Amazon Partner to Boost Thai Brands in US Market”

BANGKOK, Thailand, 22 August, 2024 – At the TOPTHAI Cross Border E-Commerce Day 2024, the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and Amazon Global Selling (AGS) announced that they have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to help bolster e-commerce export capabilities of Thailand’s Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Under the MoU, DITP and AGS will join forces to improve Thailand businesses’ knowledge about e-commerce export to the U.S. by facilitating workshops and providing advisory and support for those interested in becoming an Amazon Selling partner. The U.S. ranks second in the world by e-commerce total revenue amounting to 1.1 trillion USD in 2023 according to Statista. In a survey commissioned by Amazon and conducted by Access Partnership in 2023, more than 65% of Thailand’s MSMEs ranked the U.S. as a priority e-commerce destination over the next five years.

Mr. Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, Director General of the Department of International Trade Promotion, said: “The Department of International Trade Promotion is pleased to sign a MoU with Amazon Global Selling and we strongly believe that this will help accelerate Thai businesses’ pace to export and reach global markets such as the U.S., while also enhancing the international reputation of Thai products. Exports are an essential business driver for Thailand’s economy.” He said.

image3 22

Mr. Anand Palit, Head of Amazon Global Selling for Southeast Asia, said, “We are very thankful for DITP’s continuous collaboration over the past few years, and we are convinced that this MoU will take our cooperation even further. According to research commissioned by Amazon, 95% of Thailand businesses surveyed agreed that government-industry collaboration to organize educational sessions (e.g., conferences, seminars) would enhance their e-commerce export capabilities. This is exactly what we are going to do with this MoU with DITP.”

In connection with the MoU, Amazon Global Selling will join DITP’s roadshows in Thailand to raise awareness of e-commerce export opportunities in the U.S. During DITP’s roadshows, AGS will educate Thai brand owners and businesses about how to sell their products in the Amazon U.S store and about U.S. consumer preferences and trends. In the 12-month period ending 31 June 2024, the top 5 categories from Thailand selling partners in the Amazon U.S store were Home, Apparel, Grocery, Health & Personal Care, Sport.

In addition, Amazon Global Selling plans to organize regular onboarding workshops to help Thai brands and businesses launch on Amazon.com. The workshops will cover topics such as account opening, product listing creation, international shipping, digital advertising etc.

Finally, DITP and Amazon Global Selling will continue in collaboration to advance the launch of Thai products under the TOPTHAI project on Amazon.com. The TOPTHAI initiative, established by DITP, is an online store on an international e-commerce platform aimed at enhancing the global market presence of Thai products through online channels. The primary objective of the TOPTHAI project is to foster confidence in Thai products and promote their export potential to international markets. DITP will extend support to Thailand’s MSMEs that have already established their own Amazon stores. These enterprises are invited to join the TOPTHAI program, which will facilitate their participation in various promotional campaigns, both online and offline. These efforts are designed to stimulate sales and elevate the prominence of Thai products amidst global competition.

image2 22

Mr. Wootinun Sungong, owner of Tuff Sport – a TOPTHAI-supported brand based in Bangkok which is specialized in the design, manufacturing of unique Muay Thai shorts and which recently launched on Amazon.com said: “We’ve been trying to crack the U.S. market for the past several years and initially we did it through traditional off-line channels, which proved challenging. We quickly realized that Amazon’s services, particularly, its FBA [Fulfilment By Amazon] services allowed us to penetrate all U.S. locations easily because when a U.S. customer purchases our products on Amazon.com, Amazon in the U.S. picks, packs and ships the order for us and can even provide customer service and handle customer returns for our orders in the U.S. In addition, DITP has helped us with marketing campaign on Amazon.com after joining the TOPTHAI program.”

Ms. Parichat Srimontree Head of Online Channels at Wel-B healthy snacks, a TOPTHAI-supported brand and family-run business from Samut Sakhon specialized in freeze-dried, oil-free and food-additive free fruit snacks which launched their storefront on Amazon.com said: “We are truly honored to have participated in this project with DIPT and Amazon Global Selling. This project has not only enhanced our team’s capabilities but also provided us with invaluable opportunities to learn and grow in the global e-commerce industry. Working alongside experts from Amazon Global Selling has given us new insights and knowledge that are crucial for the sustainable development of our online business.”

Anand Palit added: “Amazon Global Selling has enabled thousands of Thailand sellers to bring millions of Thai product units to worldwide customers. The average sale of Thailand businesses in the Amazon U.S. store saw a double-digit increase in the first six months this year compared to the same period last year. Thailand businesses are keen to export through ecommerce and with Amazon’s innovative tools and support and our partnership with DITP, we can help more local brands go global and seize export opportunities in the U.S. and also in other countries.”

Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit highlighted that the MoU will deepen the collaboration between the DITP and AGS, which will create the stronger ties to foster and uplift the Thai MSMEs’ capability to thrive in the e-commerce market in the U.S. and other regions (etc. Europe) through Amazon.com. Additionally, DITP will select Thai products under the TOPTHAI project through a dedicated showcase along with promotional campaigns on Amazon.com at the TOPTHAIxAmazon Pavilion, which will take place during the upcoming event on September 3rd at Times Square, New York City. This event will mark the inaugural activity following the recent signing of the MoU.

Tunnel Collapse while Constructing Wall at High-Speed Rail Project in Korat

tunnel
The search operation team uses an excavator to remove soil at about 600 meters deep from the tunnel entrance on August 26, 2024.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — Three workers — two Chinese and one Burmese national— were buried when the high-speed rail tunnel collapsed in the Klong Khanan Chit section in Chanthuek sub-district, Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

A preliminary investigation by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) revealed that the excavation of the Khlong Pai Tunnel is almost complete, with around 4,100 meters already dug. A wall was built along the entire length of the tunnel during construction.

The collapse occurred at a point where the rock and soil layers in the tunnel had subsided over a distance of around 10 to 30 meters during the construction of the wall.

Surapong Piyachot, Acting Deputy Minister of Transport, further stated on August 26 that there had been continuous rainfall in the period before the incident. This led to water seeping into the soil layers above the tunnel.

“When the soil became saturated with a large amount of water, while some concrete lining had been done on the upper part, the full circumference of the tunnel walls had not yet been reinforced to increase strength. This may have resulted in the heavily water-laden soil collapsing onto the trucks and vehicles that were operating inside,” he explained.

The incident occurred on August 24 at 11:40 p.m. when the workers were using an excavator and a loader to dig a section about 600 meters deep from the tunnel entrance. Suddenly, there was a collapse of the mountain floor, which covered all three vehicles with a loud noise. It is believed that the workers, including the two workers and their supervisor, were trapped by the debris.

The missing persons have been identified as:

  1. Mr. Hu Xiang Min, male, Chinese nationality, site supervisor.
  2. Mr. Tong Qinlin, male, Chinese nationality, backhoe operator.
  3. A Burmese worker, name unknown, truck driver.

At 4:30 a.m. on August 26, after a nighttime search operation using pulse monitors and an excavator to remove soil, the rescue team discovered signs of life indicating that the trapped people might still be alive. As a result, rescue vehicles and a medical team from Pak Chong Nana Hospital were dispatched to the tunnel entrance.

However, at 10:00 a.m., the search team inserted a pulse-detecting pipe once again to check, but no vital signs of the worker were detected. The operation was supported by K9 search dogs, and several agencies remained on site around the clock to assist.

The tunnel construction is part of the high-speed rail project between Thailand and China, which was originally part of the 2 trillion baht infrastructure investment initiative under the government of Yingluck Shinawatra.

During the military government under Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, a cabinet decision on July 11, 2017 authorized the State Railway of Thailand to proceed with the high-speed rail project between Bangkok and Nong Khai.

tunnel korat2
Rescue vehicles and a medical team from Pak Chong Nana Hospital were dispatched to the tunnel entrance.

The investment strategy involves cooperation between the Thai and Chinese governments and is in line with the development strategy of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Thailand is responsible for the overall project investment, construction and adoption of Chinese construction technology and railroad systems.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the 253 km Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima construction of Phase 1 with a budget of 179.4 billion baht took place on December 21, 2017, after the contracts between the State Railway of Thailand and the Chinese state-owned enterprises China Railway Design Corporation (CRDC) and China Railway International Corporation (CRIC) were signed on September 4, 2017.

Originally, the project comprised 14 construction contracts, of which one was completed, seven were under construction, three were in preparation and three were in the award process. The project was originally scheduled to be fully operational by 2026.

tunnel korat4
Khlong Pai Tunnel is almost complete when it collapses during wall construction.

However, the project experienced delays and ultimately setbacks. On March 22, 2022, the cabinet approved a draft royal decree to expropriate land in certain areas of Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Saraburi and Nakhon Ratchasima for the high-speed rail line.

On August 20, 2023, the then Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith mentioned a further delay during an inspection of the construction progress, so that the start of operations is now expected in 2027.

By 2024, Anan Phonimdaeng, deputy governor of the State Railway of Thailand, summarized the overall progress of the project as 71.36 percent completion as of July 25, 2024, with a work performance delay of 34.97 percent and a progress delay of 36.39 percent, postponing the start of service to 2028.

At a meeting of the SRT Board of Directors on 14 August 2024, an adjustment to the budget framework for Contracts 3-5 involving the Khok Kruat-Nakhon Ratchasima section totaling 2.05 billion baht was approved.

The reason for this adjustment is the change from a ground-level structure to an elevated structure on a 7.85-kilometer section along the Khok Kruat-Phukhao Lat route to support the surrounding communities that had requested the elevated structure.

French Authorities Arrest Telegram CEO Pavel Durov at a Paris Airport

NICE, France (AP) — The founder and CEO of the messaging service Telegram was detained at a Paris airport on an arrest warrant alleging his platform has been used for money laundering, drug trafficking and other offenses, French media reported Sunday.

Pavel Durov, a dual citizen of France and Russia, was taken into custody at Paris-Le Bourget Airport on Saturday evening after landing in France from Azerbaijan, according to broadcasters LCI and TF1.

Investigators from the National Anti-Fraud Office, attached to the French customs department, notified Durov, 39, that he was being placed in police custody, the broadcasters said.

Durov’s representatives couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.

French prosecutors declined to comment on Durov’s arrest when contacted by The Associated Press on Sunday, in line with regulations during an ongoing investigation.

French media reported that the warrant for Durov was issued by France at the request of the special unit at the country’s interior ministry in charge of investigating crimes against minors. Those include online sexual exploitation, such as possession and distribution of child sexual abuse content and grooming for sexual purposes.

Telegram was founded by Durov and his brother in the wake of the Russian government’s crackdown after mass pro-democracy protests that rocked Moscow at the end of 2011 and 2012.

The demonstrations prompted Russian authorities to clamp down on the digital space, adopting regulations that forced internet providers to block websites and cellphone operators to store call records and messages that could be shared with security services.

In the increasingly repressive environment, Telegram and its pro-privacy rhetoric offered a convenient way for Russians to communicate and share news. In 2018, Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor moved to block Telegram over its refusal to hand over encryption keys, but ultimately failed to fully restrict access to the app.

Telegram continued to be widely used — including by government institutions — and the ban was dropped two years later. In March 2024, Roskomnadzor said that Telegram was working with the Russian government to a certain extent and had removed more than 256,000 posts with prohibited content at Roskomnadzor’s request.

Telegram also continues to be a popular source of news in Ukraine, where both media outlets and officials use it to share information on the war, and deliver missile and air raid alerts.

In a statement posted on its platform, Telegram said it abides by EU laws including the digital services act, and its moderation is “within industry standards and constantly improving.”

Durov, the company added, “has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe.”

“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform,” Telegram’s post said. “Almost a billion users globally use Telegram as means of communication and as a source of vital information. We’re awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation. Telegram is with you all.”

A French judicial official suggested that Durov could appear before a judge later Sunday to determine whether he will remain in custody. The official wasn’t authorized to be named publicly during an ongoing investigation.

“If the person concerned is to be brought before a judge today, it is only in the context of the possible extension of his police custody measure — a decision that must be taken and notified by an investigating judge,” the official said.

Western governments have often criticized Telegram for lack of content moderating on the messaging service, which experts say opens up the messaging platform for potential use in money laundering, drug trafficking and allowing the sharing of content linked to sexual exploitation of minors.

Compared to other messaging platforms, Telegram is “less secure (and) more lax in terms of policy and detection of illegal content,” said David Thiel, a Stanford University researcher, who has investigated the use of online platforms for child exploitation, at its Internet Observatory.

In addition, Telegram “appears basically unresponsive to law enforcement,” Thiel said, adding that messaging service WhatsApp “submitted over 1.3 million CyberTipline reports in 2023 (and) Telegram submits none.”

In 2022, Germany issued fines of 5.125 million euros ($5 million) against the operators of Telegram for failing to comply with German law. The Federal Office of Justice said that Telegram FZ-LLC hasn’t established a lawful way for reporting illegal content or named an entity in Germany to receive official communication.

Both are required under German laws that regulate large online platforms.

Last year, Brazil temporarily suspended Telegram over its failure to surrender data on neo-Nazi activity related to a police inquiry into school shootings in November.

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of social media site X who’s called himself a “free speech absolutist” in the past, posted ”#freePavel” in support of Durov following the arrest.

Russian government officials expressed outrage at Durov’s arrest, with some highlighting what they said was the West’s double standard on freedom of speech.

“In 2018, a group of 26 NGOs, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Freedom House, Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and others, condemned the Russian court’s decision to block Telegram,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

“Do you think this time they’ll appeal to Paris and demand Durov’s release?” Zakharova said in a post on her personal Telegram account.

Officials at the Russian Embassy in Paris had requested access to Durov, Zakharova told Russian state news outlet RIA Novosti, but she added that French authorities view Durov’s French citizenship as his primary one.

In a statement to the AP earlier this month, Telegram said that it actively combats misuse of its platform.

“Moderators use a combination of proactive monitoring and user reports in order to remove content that breaches Telegram’s terms of service. Each day, millions of pieces of harmful content are removed,” the company said.

11-Year-Old E-Cigarette Smoker Sparks Controversy in Pattaya

Thai authorities and the boy's guardians held a meeting to discuss solutions and rehabilitation strategies for him on Sunday night, August 25, 2024.

PATTAYA — A video circulating on social media showed a young boy smoking an e-cigarette and exhaling smoke in front of an entertainment venue on Walking Street in South Pattaya. This sparked widespread comments and sharing online.

Authorities later identified the boy as Pangpond, age 11. His guardians stated that he often runs away from home, causing the family to search for him repeatedly, even posting on social media countless times.

At 8:00 p.m. on August 25, Nattamon Kitdamrongkuj, head of the Chonburi Children and Family Home, along with officials from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Chonburi Province, Pattaya City Police, Bang Lamung District administrative officers, and the boy’s guardians, held a meeting at Pattaya Police Station to discuss solutions and rehabilitation plans. The boy appeared stressed and cried throughout the meeting.

Aunt Oiy, 60, the boy’s stepmother, revealed that she had never seen him involved with e-cigarettes at home and had warned him about their dangers. When asked where he got the e-cigarette, the boy said he bought it from a vendor on Walking Street but couldn’t specify the exact location.

She added that the family hasn’t been negligent, but Pangpond has hyperactivity disorder and frequently disappears from home, sometimes taking days to find.

Pattaya City Special Affairs officers reported on Pangpond’s troublesome behavior, showing video evidence of him setting fire to objects in a mobile toilet owned by Pattaya City. Due to his young age, officials could only warn him and return him to his guardians’ care.

Following this discussion, the Chonburi Ministry of Social Development and Human Security officials decided to take the boy to the Chonburi Children and Family Home for assessment and rehabilitation.

Regarding e-cigarettes, Bang Lamung District administrative officers and Pattaya City Police will conduct raids to arrest those illegally selling electronic cigarettes and prosecute them.

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (AP) — Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar who live in sprawling camps in Bangladesh on Sunday marked the seventh anniversary of their mass exodus, demanding safe return to Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

The refugees gathered in an open field at Kutupalong camp in Cox’s Bazar district carrying banners and festoons reading “Hope is Home” and “We Rohingya are the citizens of Myanmar,” defying the rain on a day that is marked as “Rohingya Genocide Day.”

On Aug. 25, 2017, hundreds of thousands of refugees started crossing the border to Bangladesh on foot and by boats amid indiscriminate killings and other violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

Myanmar had launched a brutal crackdown following attacks by an insurgent group on guard posts. The scale, organization and ferocity of the operation led to accusations from the international community, including the U.N., of ethnic cleansing and genocide.

Then-Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered border guards to open the border, eventually allowing more than 700,000 refugees to take shelter in the Muslim-majority nation. The influx was in addition to the more than 300,000 refugees who had already been living in Bangladesh for decades in the wake of waves of previous violence perpetrated by Myanmar’s military.

Since 2017, Bangladesh has attempted at least twice to send the refugees back and has urged the international community to build pressure on Myanmar for a peaceful environment inside Myanmar that could help start the repatriation. Hasina also sought help from China to mediate.

But in the recent past, the situation in Rakhine state has become more volatile after a group called Arakan Army started fighting against Myanmar’s security forces. The renewed chaos forced more refugees to flee toward Bangladesh and elsewhere in a desperate move to save their lives. Hundreds of Myanmar soldiers and border guards also took shelter inside Bangladesh to flee the violence, but Bangladesh later handed them over to Myanmar peacefully.

As the protests took place in camps in Bangladesh on Sunday, the United Nations and other rights groups expressed their concern over the ongoing chaos in Myanmar.

Washington-based Refugees International in a statement on Sunday described the scenario.

“In Rakhine state, increased fighting between Myanmar’s military junta and the AA (Arakan Army) over the past year has both caught Rohingya in the middle and seen them targeted. The AA has advanced and burned homes in Buthidaung, Maungdaw, and other towns, recently using drones to bomb villages,” it said.

“The junta has forcibly recruited Rohingya and bombed villages in retaliation. Tens of thousands of Rohingya have been newly displaced, including several who have tried to flee into Bangladesh,” it said.

UNICEF said that the agency received alarming reports that civilians, particularly children and families, were being targeted or caught in the crossfire, resulting in deaths and severe injuries, making humanitarian access in Rakhine extremely challenging.

Opinion: From Move Forward Party to People’s Party – A Reversed Political Truman Show?

Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, the new leader of the People's Party, talks to reporters at the media launch of the People's Party at the Thai Summit building, Bangkok, on August 9, 2024. (KHAOSOD PHOTO)

First, they won the May 2014 general election, but then the Move Forward Party under the leadership of Pita Limjaroenrat failed to form a government. A little over a year later, on August 7, 2024, the party was dissolved by the Constitutional Court for pledging to amend the controversial lese majeste law and Pita, along with ten other party leaders, were banned from politics for 10 years.

The court basically said amending the law will eventually lead to the opening of a floodgate that would ultimately destroy the monarchy institution.

Then earlier this week, Pita announced he is leaving Thailand for Harvard on a fellowship. Two days after MFP was dissolved, a new party was announced. Now known as People’s Party, its new 37-year-old leader, Mr. Nattaphong Ruengpanyawut, did not wait for more than a day to pass before announcing the avatar party of MFP will continue to seek to push for the amendment of the anachronistic royal defamation law.

Some wonder if the new party, or the old party in a new bottle, which has managed to raise over 20 million baht in public donations within the first week of its launch, is heading toward another eventual party dissolution.

The political spectators and the enemies of the People’s Party may be missing the point, however.

It is increasingly apparent to this writer that this political party, whether when it was originally known as Future Forward Party, then Move Forward Party, and now People’s Party, is on a mission to expose the reality of Thai politics and society and conscientize citizens through its defeats and sufferings. Perhaps this may even be the ultimate goal of the party, and not forming a government or being at the nexus of political power.

Think of a type of a reversed Truman Show, a reversed Political Truman Show, that is. The public have been unwittingly watching the triumphs and failures of the party under different names and different key protagonists, including Pita and its original founder of the now-dissolved Future Forward Party Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, and colleagues, and one could not help but wonder if it is actually a ‘real-life show’ exposing how Thai society is in fact far from being democratic and lacking in fundamental rights, particularly the right to criticize, or at least say something negatively or critically about the monarchy.

Back in February 2020, when the then nearly two-year-old political party founded by Thanathorn and his colleagues was dissolved by the Charter Court because Thanathorn loaned 191 million baht to his own party and did not classify it as a donation, thus putting the party at risk of being unduly dominated by the man, which also included a 10-year political ban on Thanathorn, it eventually led to the birth of the monarchy-reform movement.

Hundred-thousands, if not millions, of young Thais became politicized and took to the streets on Bangkok to demand the institution be reformed to make it more in line with monarchies in the U.K., Sweden and Japan. These young voters also helped the iteration of the Future Forward Party, or Move Forward Party, win the general elections in May 2023. In the end, Pita failed to form a government after potential coalition partners say they want to have nothing to do with a political party that is bent on reforming the lese majeste law, if not the monarchy.

It was a rude awakening for the spectators and voters, but also a continued lesson in what is wrong with Thai society and politics. People from the pro-democracy camp learn from the travails of the party through its two iterations which necessitate the change in party leadership.

One way of looking at Future Forward/Move Forward/People’s Party is that these parties are not primarily about being in the government, but about educating the public in a prolonged fashion on what is wrong with Thailand through witnessing their political travail. In the end, the party may actually be seeking to change the system. When people’s consciences have been altered, there is no going back, and Thailand will be different and on course to eventually become a more equal society.

It is a reversed Political Truman Show, a political guerilla warfare, where many in the public feel angry at what’s happening. Even those hating Truman, or People’s Party and its leaders, may not be aware that they are helping the People’s Party achieve its goal by doing everything to show that political fair play does not exist in Thailand.

The more often this party, no matter what name it is called, gets dissolved, the more leaders banned from politics – the more people will become sympathetic and awake.

Islamic State Group Claims Responsibility for Knife Attack that Killed 3 in Germany

SOLINGEN, Germany (AP) — The Islamic State militant group on Saturday claimed responsibility for a knife attack that killed three people and wounded eight more at a crowded festival marking this city’s 650th anniversary.

The extremist group said on its news site that the attacker targeted Christians and that as a “soldier of the Islamic State” he carried out the assaults Friday night “to avenge Muslims in Palestine and everywhere.”

The IS claim couldn’t immediately be verified. It provided no evidence for its assertions.

Police later detained a suspect, the internal affairs minister of North Rhein Westphalia state said early Sunday.

“We have been following a hot lead all day,” Herbert Reul told “Tagesschau,” the news program of the German public television network ARD. “The person we have been searching for all day has been detained a short while ago.”

He was being questioned, Reul said.

Reul said police not only had “clues” but also collected “pieces of evidence.”

Officials earlier said a 15-year-old boy was arrested early Saturday on suspicion he knew about the planned attack and failed to inform authorities, but he was not the attacker. Two female witnesses told police they overheard the boy and an unknown person before the attack speaking about intentions that corresponded to the bloodshed, officials said.

Before the Reul announcement, Markus Caspers, senior public prosecutor from the counterterrorism section of the public prosecutors office, said at a news conference Saturday that authorities could not yet speak on the attacker’s motivation.

“So far we have not been able to identify a motive, but looking at the overall circumstances, we cannot rule out” the possibility of terrorism, Caspers said, though he did not offer further details.

The three people who died were two men aged 67 and 56 and a 56-year-old woman, authorities said. Police said the attacker appeared to have deliberately aimed for his victims’ throats.

“We are seeing the first signs of a new wave of terrorist attacks,” said Peter Neumann, a professor of security studies at King’s College in London. IS “is trying to capitalize on the huge mobilization resulting from Hamas’ terror offensive on 7 October 2023, even though strictly speaking it had nothing to do with it,” he said.

“The kind of attack we saw in Solingen is exactly the kind of attack that (IS) is trying to inspire. It’s calling on people over the internet to attack ‘unbelievers’ using simple methods. like cars and knives. That way, it is trying to create an impression that (the Islamic State group) is everywhere and could strike anytime,” Neumann told The Associated Press.

Thorsten Fleiss, who headed police operations Friday night, said officers were conducting searches and investigations in the entire state of North Rhine Westphalia.

He said police had found several knives, but added he was unable to confirm whether any of them were used during the attack.

Police warned people to stay vigilant even as well wishers started to leave flowers at the scene. Authorities established an online portal where witnesses could upload footage and any other information relevant to the attack.

Churches in Solingen opened their doors to offer a space for prayer and emergency pastoral care.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser visited the city Saturday evening and said the government would do everything possible to support the people of Solingen.

“We will not allow that such an awful attack divides our society,” she said, appearing alongside state Minister-President Hendrik Wüst and Reul.

Wüst described the attack as “an act of terror against the security and freedom of this country.” But Faeser, the country’s top security official, had not classified it as a “terror attack.”

People alerted police shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday that a man had assaulted several people with a knife on the city’s central square, the Fronhof.

Solingen, a city of about 160,000 residents near the bigger cities of Cologne and Duesseldorf, was holding a “Festival of Diversity” to mark its 650th anniversary. It began Friday and was supposed to run through Sunday, with several stages in central streets offering attractions such as live music, cabaret and acrobatics.

The attack took place in the crowd in front of one stage. Hours later, the stage lights were still on as police and forensic investigators looked for clues in the cordoned-off square, but the rest of the festival was canceled.

“Last night our hearts were torn apart. We in Solingen are full of horror and grief. What happened yesterday in our city has hardly let any of us sleep,” the mayor of Solingen, Tim Kurzbach, told reporters Saturday.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the perpetrator must be punished with the full force of the law.

“The attack in Solingen is a terrible event that has shocked me greatly. An attacker has brutally killed several people. I have just spoken to Solingen’s mayor, Tim Kurzbach. We mourn the victims and stand by their families,” Scholz said Saturday on the social media platform X.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also spoke to the mayor Saturday morning.

“The heinous act in Solingen shocks me and our country. We mourn those killed and worry about those injured and I wish them strength and a speedy recovery from all my heart,” Steinmeier said in a statement.

A decade after the Islamic State militant group declared its caliphate in large parts of Iraq and Syria, the extremists no longer control any land, have lost many prominent leaders and are mostly out of the world news headlines.

Still, the group continues to recruit members and claim responsibility for deadly attacks around the world, including lethal operations in Iran and Russia earlier this year that killed dozens of people. Its sleeper cells in Syria and Iraq still carry out attacks on government forces in both countries as well as U.S.-backed Syrian fighters.
