Scent of Success: Hong Thai Inhaler’s Path from Streets to Stars

Hong Thai
Theerapong Rabuetham (right) is proud of his inhaler brand "Hong Thai." It is used by global superstars such as Lisa, Chris Hemsworth, Central Cee, and the latest Thai weightlifting athlete "Fang" Theeraphong Silachai who won a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

BANGKOK — Theerapong Rabuetham, also known as “Keng”, never thought that his aromatic inhaler brand “Hong Thai” would go so far as to be used by global superstars such as Lisa (Lalisa Manoban), Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth and British rapper Central Cee. It has also become a source of relaxation for Thailand’s Olympic athletes in Paris 2024.

Theerapong started out as a street vendor selling aromatic inhalers with a formula he found in a local newspaper and is now in the process of growing the Hong Thai fragrance brand to a turnover of 500 million baht ($14 million).

A Life of Struggles

Born and raised in Bangkok’s Talat Phlu area near Wat Sra Kaew in Thonburi, Keng Teerapong comes from a poor family. His father was a cab driver, his mother a housewife, and they lived in a small house with six children.

“We even had to pay for a blanket in installments,” he says, explaining his family’s financial situation.

He began working at the age of 13, stocking electronic equipment, delivering documents on a Vespa and creating product brochures. He also served in the military at the age of 20.

After leaving the military, Keng applied for various sales jobs but was rejected. He then started selling pork cracklings and chili paste. One day, while reading a local newspaper, he came across an article about making inhalants and decided to take a course for 200 baht ($5.7).

“I continued to experiment and improve,” he recalls, and sold his products on the street and at petrol stations.

His first attempt was unsuccessful, and he took a two-month break. After rethinking his approach, he tried again but was still unsuccessful. He then returned to regular employment for about three and a half years until he heard a life-changing comment from a customer.

“A gas station attendant asked: ‘Where have you been? The customers were asking about your products.”

The customers sought out his strong fragrance in his absence and reignited his passion.

“This made me realize that my product was of high quality,” says Keng Teerapong, recounting how he refined and tested the product over hundreds of iterations, sincerely listening to customer feedback, which ultimately led to the brand’s success today.

The Green Hongthai

The Hong Thai Group offers a variety of herbal products for external use, including inhalants, ointments and massage oils. There are currently six types of inhalants, with the “green” variety being the bestseller.

“It was a mixture of oils and herbs that was kept in a jar. When we smelled it, we thought, ‘Wow… why does this feel so refreshing and good?’ At first we weren’t sure if it would sell.”

He started selling 30-40 cans a day at the market and within a month received an order for 600 cans as souvenirs.

“The cans were unattractive, and there were no labels, but I believed there was some charm in the scent that made customers feel good, just as we did.” From that initial order of 600 cans, production has continued without a single day’s pause.

Moving Towards 500 Million Baht

Behind the success of Hong Thai and the leadership of Teerapong is a commitment to continuous improvement and openness to feedback.

“In the early days, I received a lot of criticism, even on a daily basis. The fact that we improved over 500 times shows that we were not good enough.”

If you are criticized by a group of customers and refuse to make changes, you will lose those customers. But if you think about it and see it as an opportunity to improve, the results can be very rewarding.

“If you are too full of yourself in business, you will never make the necessary changes.”

“Keep going, keep improving and be determined. I believe that determination is what will get you to the finish line”

Today, Hong Thai employs around 500 people and produces over 3 million units per month for all products.

The six types of inhalants have a market share of about 80, while Hong Thai has a share of about 15 in the country’s overall inhalant market. The company expects total sales to reach 500 million baht in 2024.

In 2021, Bertram (1958) Co, Ltd. the manufacturer of Peppermint Field inhalants and Siang Pure Oil, estimated that the inhalant market in Thailand is worth about 4.5 billion baht ($128 million) annually, with at least 10 percent of Thais using inhalants.

Most people buy more than one, as it is a product that is often misplaced. At a conservative estimate of two per person and an average price of 20-30 baht, the market value is around 4.5 billion baht.

The 50-year-old CEO says the goal for 2027 is to become the number one manufacturer with the best customer service in Thailand and to help both partners and customers grow together while maintaining high quality standards.

“If a sample product does not sell or is damaged, it can be exchanged. We do not force sales to achieve targets. Our aim is to create fairness in every trade,” he says. When a manufacturer succeeds in communicating its understanding of the product to consumers, Hong Thai’s inhaler spreads around the world.

Thai Government Addresses Concerns Over Foreign Business Encroachment

Chinese restaurants have opened in Bangkok's Huai Kwang District.

BANGKOK — Amid a sluggish economy, the Thai government is trying to address economic issues that have been hotly debated on social media. Concerns have been raised that foreign investment in Thai businesses is putting Thai people at a disadvantage and forcing many to close their businesses, particularly in the restaurant, transportation and e-commerce sectors.

On August 13, Mr. Chai Wacharong, spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, urged all sectors of society to consider the issue carefully, using principles and reasoning. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is concerned about the public’s morale in daily life and does not want their mood to be undermined by distorted news. He has also instructed the relevant authorities to strictly enforce the laws to ensure maximum benefit for the Thai people.

Regarding the claim that the entry of foreign capital into the restaurant business has led to the closure of up to 50 percent of restaurants, the government spokesman confirmed that this is not true. Although Thai entrepreneurs face many challenges, new Thai restaurant businesses are constantly being established.

aroidee
Aroy Dee”, a quick-serve Thai food restaurant brand under CRG announces closure for all branches, effective from April 30, 2024.

According to the Department of Business Development, as of July 31, 2024, there are 23,414 legal entities operating a restaurant in Thailand, with the majority being small businesses (97.46 percent or 22,819 businesses).

In the first seven months of 2024 (January to July), 2,472 new restaurant businesses were registered, mainly in tourist provinces and major cities, including Bangkok (926 businesses), Chonburi (258 businesses), Phuket (192 businesses), Chiang Mai (165 businesses) and Surat Thani (122 businesses).

The Ministry of Commerce has supported the hospitality industry by strengthening the ability of Thai restaurateurs to adapt, seek opportunities and overcome new challenges, particularly through the use of digital technologies to better understand and reach consumers.

This support includes working with the private sector on activities such as the Smart Restaurant Plus program, which has developed more than 3,000 restaurants, raising Thai restaurant standards through Thai SELECT certification, boosting sales through the “Taste Thai SELECT” campaign, and connecting tourism routes with restaurants, which has been piloted in 10 routes such as Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Mai and Phuket.

Temu
Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai states that many Thai SMEs are complaining they’re going out of business as a new and very cheap Chinese online shopping platform called TEMU is seducing Thai consumers with cheaper goods.

As for the issue of zero-dollar tours, the Ministry of Economic Development is working with law enforcement agencies to investigate companies with nominee agreements where Thais hold shares in the name of foreigners to circumvent the 1999 Foreign Companies Act.

This law stipulates that foreigners who wish to operate service companies listed in the law and hold more than 50 percent of the shares must obtain proper authorization. Failure to do so could result in penalties including imprisonment of up to three years, fines of between 100,000 and 1,000,000 baht, or both.

As for the rumors that Chinese companies, both manufacturers and operators, are negotiating to buy coaches in Thailand, the Ministry of Land Transport has confirmed that this is not possible. The ministry stressed that licenses for regular and non-regular passenger transport services cannot be transferred from one legal entity to another.

An illustrative image for Matichon Online’s news article, citing sources in the passenger transport business circle, stating that Chinese companies have come to take over Thai transportation companies.

The ministry also clarified the legal requirements of the Land Transport Act of 1979, which state that legal entities must be registered under Thai law, have their head office in Thailand and at least half of the directors must be Thai nationals. In addition, at least 51 percent of the share capital must be held by individual shareholders who are Thai nationals.

With regard to the intrusion of e-commerce companies, which was widely discussed in the Temu case, the Ministry of Commerce is working with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Health, the Department of Special Investigation, the Board of Investment, the Office of Consumer Protection and the Electronic Transactions Development Agency to establish measures to regulate standards for imported goods both offline and online.

Customs will review the top 10 categories of products imported from overseas via online purchases. It is also considering measures to regulate online sales platforms in Thailand, such as requiring them to set up a representative office in Thailand or register their business.

UNFPA Visits Thailand’s Northeast to Advance ICPD30

UNFPA visits Thailand’s Northeast to advance ICPD30– “enabling equal access to family planning for all, ending gender-based violence, and promoting the life-cycle approach to aging.”

8-9th August 2024 – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) team, led by Mr. Pio Smith, UNFPA Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific; Dr. Julitta Onabanjo, Country Director of UNFPA Thailand and Representative for UNFPA Malaysia; and Ms. Siriluck Chiengwong, Head of Office of UNFPA Thailand traveled to Khon Kaen Province to advance the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action (PoA) with the focus on promoting equal access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR),  family planning services for all people regardless of their group, gender and age, as well as promoting maternal and child health; ending gender-based violence; and population development through the life-cycle approach to ageing using both digitalisation and technology along with traditional approach to prepare every population group      to cope with the aged society in Thailand. Furthermore, there is a discussion regarding the expansion of collaboration between UNFPA Thailand and the Faculty of Nursing, Khon Kaen University. Dr. Julitta Onabanjo, Country Director of UNFPA Thailand and Representative for UNFPA Malaysia, emphasised that UNFPA works closely with partners in all sectors worldwide, including Thailand and the Asia-Pacific region. In Thailand, UNFPA collaborates with national and local government agencies to empower young people on their sexual and reproductive health and rights, to embrace the life-cycle approach to aging, and to know how to manage and respond to gender-based violence.

“Furthermore, Thailand has expertise in midwifery and reducing adolescent pregnancy. Thanks to its high commitment to contributing to the achievement of the world’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Thailand has shared this expertise with numerous countries, including Bhutan, Lao PDR, and Timor-Leste, through the South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC). This really puts Thailand as the forefront champion of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which commemorates its 30th anniversary this year,” said Dr. Onabanjo.

image3 9

Ms. Siriluck Chiengwong, the Head of Office of UNFPA Thailand, explained that the life-cycle approach to aging is the primary concept that UNFPA Thailand employs in all of its work, including the northeastern region at this time. This concept promotes investments which ensure that every population groups of every gender, age, and group is prepared cope with the aged society’s challenges to be able to live well, age well and can engage in the activities they desire, especially the vulnerable groups for example women and girls. This investment encompasses sexual and reproductive health, as well as the safety of living in accordance with the rights and choices of each individual.

“In response to Thailand’s transition to an aging society, UNFPA is now launching an innovative pilot Life-Cycle Digital Platform called “Line@SoSafe.” This project is designed to assist populations of all ages, genders and groups to be ready and adaptive to the present aged society in Thailand. SoSafe was created to serve as an alternative refuge that enhances and unites the government’s efforts and increase access to existing services while providing preventions advice and relevant knowledge and information. It is prepared to provide assistance and support to all segments of the populace in resolving social issues. This platform contains chatbots that can receive notifications about various social issues such as unplanned pregnancy, sexual harassment, and      domestic violence. In Khon Kaen Province, which is one of the 15 pilot provinces, Line@SoSafe’ is now ready for service and the relevant local authorities were trained to use the application to support their work. In the near future, we will extend the coverage of SoSafe to encompass all of Thailand,” Ms. Siriluck revealed.

Mr. Boonyarit Panitrungreung, Deputy Mayor of Khon Kaen Municipality, stated that Line@SoSafe is a technology and innovation that UNFPA Thailand has introduced to youth in Khon Kaen Province. It is a tool to assist when facing adolescent pregnancy, gender-based violence, and domestic violence. He is convinced that SoSafe will play a significant role in the future, particularly for the current generation of young people and adolescents who are well-versed in technology.

“Today, schoolchildren in Khon Kaen province are learning to use Line@SoSafe to request assistance, obtain information, and receive benefits when confronted with social issues, particularly when encountering gender-based violence or teenage pregnancy. I am very optimistic and am confident that this collaboration at the local level will be connected to the future assistance of all citizens at the national level,” Mr. Boonyarit expresses.

Dr. Wallapa Bunpromma, Head of One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC) at Khon Kaen Hospital      revealed that the center currently provides support to survivors of gender-based violence, with an emphasis on life-saving services and survivor-centred approach. A significant number of women, girls, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and vulnerable groups receive services at the centre. In order to establish a society that is entirely free of gender-based violence, he is of the opinion that Thailand must be proactive and enhance coordination among working agencies.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Somjit Muangpin, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Services of the Faculty of Nursing at Khon Kaen University, discussed the collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing and UNFPA Thailand. The two organizations have collaborated in many initiatives through the South-South and Triangular Cooperation including midwifery the promotion of maternal health to developing countries like Bhutan, Laos PDR and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. In the future, the collaboration will expand to the promotion of sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, a life-cycle approach to ageing and healthy ageing.

“Thailand’s Northeastern region will accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by ensuring that the population has a high quality of life and is in good health. The Faculty of Nursing and UNFPA Thailand will persist in their collaborative efforts to establish a healthy aging society and assist Thailand in moving forward to a healthy aging. The United Nations defines healthy aging as developing and maintaining the functional abilities that enable well-being in older age. Based on this, we believe that Thailand has the capacity to assist older persons for a healthy life,” stated Asst. Prof. Dr. Somjit.

UNFPA Thailand is currently implementing its 12th Country Programme in partnership with the Thai government and multiple sectors in Thailand. The focus of its efforts in the South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) is to support countries to achieve UNFPA’s Three Transformative Results, which include ensuring universal access to family planning services, eliminating avoidable maternal deaths, and putting an end to gender-based violence. In Thailand, UNFPA focuses on implementing the life-cycle approach to aging, which aims to prepare all population groups for the transition into an aging society. These missions are the paths to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Thailand by 2030.

Trump and Musk Talk About Assassination Attempt and Deportations During Glitchy Chat on X

This combination of photos shows former President Donald Trump during rally in Minden, Nev., Oct. 8, 2022, left, and Elon Musk in Wilmington, Del., July 12, 2021. (AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump recounted his assassination attempt in vivid detail and promised the largest deportation in U.S. history during a high-profile return to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — a conversation that was plagued by technical glitches.

“If I had not turned my head, I would not be talking to you right now — as much as I like you,” Trump told X’s owner Elon Musk.

Musk, a former Trump critic, said the Republican nominee’s toughness, as demonstrated by his reaction to last month’s shooting, was critical for national security.

“There’s some real tough characters out there,” Musk said. “And if they don’t think the American president is tough, they will do what they want to do.”

The rare public conversation between Trump and Musk, which spanned more than two hours and was overwhelmingly friendly, revealed little new about Trump’s plans for a second term. The former president spent much of the discussion focused on his recent assassination attempt, illegal immigration and his plans to cut government regulations.

Still, the online meeting underscored just how much the U.S. political landscape has changed less than four years after Trump was permanently banned by the social media platform’s former leadership for spreading disinformation that sparked the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress and undermined the very foundation of the American democracy.

Such disinformation has thrived at X under Musk’s leadership, although it was largely ignored during his conversation with Trump save for a passing Trump reference to a “rigged election.”

The session was intended to serve as a way for the former president to reach potentially millions of voters directly. It was also an opportunity for X, a platform that relies heavily on politics, to redeem itself after some struggles.

It did not begin as planned.

With more than 878,000 users connected to the meeting more than 40 minutes after the scheduled start time, the interview had not yet begun. Many users received a message reading, “Details not available.”

Trump’s team posted that the “interview on X is being overwhelmed with listeners logging in.” And once the meeting began, Musk apologized for the late start and blamed a “massive attack” that overwhelmed the company’s system. Trump’s voice sounded muffled at times.

Trump supporters were openly frustrated.

“Not available????? I planned my whole day around this,” wrote conservative commentator Glenn Beck.

“Please let Elon know we can’t join,” billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman posted.

Ahead of the event, Musk posted on the platform that X was conducting “some system scaling tests” to handle what was anticipated to be a high volume of participants.

The rocky start was reminiscent of a May 2023 social media conversation between Musk and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. The Republican governor was using the social media platform as a way to officially announce his presidential bid, a disastrous rollout marred by technical glitches, overloaded by the more than 400,000 people who tried to dial in.

Trump’s Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, noted that Trump mocked DeSantis at the time.

“Wow! The DeSanctus TWITTER launch is a DISASTER! His whole campaign will be a disaster. WATCH!” Trump wrote in a message reposted by Harris’ campaign Monday.

Once the interview ended, Harris’ campaign responded with a statement saying, “Trump’s entire campaign is in service of people like Elon Musk and himself — self-obsessed rich guys who will sell out the middle class and who cannot run a livestream in the year 2024.”

Monday’s meeting highlighted the evolving personal relationship between Trump and Musk, two of the world’s most powerful men, who have shifted from being bitter rivals to unlikely allies over the span of one election season.

Musk, who described himself as a “moderate Democrat” until recently, suggested in 2022 that Trump was too old to be president again. Still, Musk formally endorsed Trump two days after his assassination attempt last month.

During their talk, Trump welcomed the idea of Musk joining his next administration to help cut government waste. Musk volunteered to join a prospective “government efficiency commission.”

“You’re the greatest cutter,” Trump told Musk. “I need an Elon Musk — I need somebody that has a lot of strength and courage and smarts. I want to close up the Department of Education, move education back to the states.”

Even before his endorsement, the tech CEO had already been working privately to support a pro-Trump super PAC. The group, known as America PAC, is now under investigation by election officials for alleged misleading attempts to collect data from voters.

Meanwhile, Trump has softened his criticism of electric vehicles, citing Musk’s leadership of Tesla. And on Monday, at least, Trump returned to Musk’s social media platform in force. The former president made at least eight individual posts in the hours leading up to the Musk interview.

Long before he endorsed Trump, Musk turned increasingly toward the right in his posts and actions on the platform, also using X to try to sway political discourse around the world. He’s gotten in a dustup with a Brazilian judge over censorship, railed against what he calls the “woke mind virus” and amplified false claims that Democrats are secretly flying in migrants to vote in U.S. elections.

Musk has also reinstated previously banned accounts such as the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Trump, who was kicked off the platform — then known as Twitter — two days after the Jan. 6 violence, with the company citing “the risk of further incitement of violence.” By November 2022, Musk had bought the company, and Trump’s account was reinstated, although the former president refrained from tweeting until Monday, insisting that he was happier on his own Truth Social site, which he launched during the ban.

Trump’s audience on X is legions larger than on Truth Social, which became a publicly traded company earlier this year. Trump has just over 7.5 million followers on Truth Social, while his mostly dormant X account is followed by 88 million. Musk’s account, which hosted the interview, has more than 193 million followers.

In a reminder that the world was watching, the chat prompted a preemptive note of caution from Europe.

Thierry Breton, a French business executive and commissioner for internal market of the European Union, warned Musk of possible “amplification of harmful content” by broadcasting his interview with Trump. In a letter posted on X, Breton urged Musk to “ensure X’s compliance” with EU law, including the Digital Services Act, adopted in 2022 to address a number of issues including disinformation.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung urged the EU to “mind their own business instead of trying to meddle in the U.S. Presidential election.”

London Police Say a Girl and a Woman Were Stabbed in Leicester Square

LONDON (AP) — A man stabbed an 11-year-old girl and her mother in London’s bustling theater district on Monday before being arrested, police said, adding that there was no indication that the attack was terrorism-related.

The attack occurred shortly before noon outside a tea shop in Leicester Square, a magnet for tourists with its shops and theaters.

Workers from nearby shops leapt to the assistance of the victims. Officers arrived within four minutes and arrested the attacker, police said. Police said they weren’t seeking anyone else in connection with the attack.

“I would like to pay tribute to the members of the public, including staff from local businesses, who bravely intervened in this incident,” Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah said. “They put themselves at risk and showed the best of London in doing so.”

The victims were taken to a major trauma center. The girl required treatment but her life was not in jeopardy, police said. Her mother, 34, had less serious injuries.

The suspect is 32, and police said that at this stage, they don’t believe he knew the victims.

“An urgent investigation is now ongoing and detectives are working to establish the details around exactly what happened,″ Jessah said.

The stabbing occurred during a recent rise in knife crime in Britain, which is on edge after days of violence as crowds spouting anti-immigrant and Islamophobic slogans clashed with police. The disturbances have been fueled by right-wing activists who used social media to spread misinformation about a mass stabbing that killed three girls during a Taylor Swift-themed dance event.

It was not clear if Monday’s attack had any link to the unrest.

Police had braced for further riots over the weekend, but no widespread unrest occurred. Ministers remain on high alert, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office said, adding that its work was not done in dealing with the fallout from the recent violence.

N Health Leads Fight Against Cervical Cancer with Nationwide HPV Testing

N Health
Currently, N Health operates five registered HPV DNA testing units covering multiple areas throughout Thailand, including Bangkok, Rayong, Udon Thani, Chiang Mai, and Hat Yai.

BANGKOK  — N Health, a subsidiary of BDMS and an expert in medical laboratory analysis, medical support services, and hospital operations for leading healthcare institutions, is joining forces with the ‘Nationwide Free HPV DNA Self-Collection for Cervical Cancer Screening in Thai Women Aged 30-59’ initiative.

Cervical cancer poses a significant public health challenge in Thailand. Statistics from the Department of Medical Services at the National Cancer Institute reveal that cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Thai women, causing over 5,000 deaths annually—an average of 13 deaths per day.

Approximately 85% of sexually active women will acquire a genital HPV infection during their lifetime. Despite being both curable and preventable, cervical cancer remains the leading cause of death among Thai women.

Key barriers to screening include embarrassment about pelvic examinations, a lack of symptoms, limited knowledge about screening options, and prioritising family care over self-care. Delaying screening until symptoms appear can have serious health consequences, potentially leading to death.

N Health, in collaboration with the Social Security Office (SSO) and the National Health Security Office (NHSO), N Health is joining forces with the ‘Nationwide Free HPV DNA Self-Collection for Cervical Cancer Screening in Thai Women Aged 30-59’ initiative. The aim is to swiftly deliver services to the public and make screening services more accessible through N Health’s network of standardised health check-up centres distributed across all regions of the country.

Mr Narongrid Galaputh, Managing Director of National Healthcare Systems Co., Ltd. (N Health), stated that N Health are acutely aware of the rising number of new cervical cancer cases and have thus partnered with the Social Security Office and the National Health Security Office to become an integral part of the concerted effort to promote cervical cancer screening among the public.

Mr Narongrid Galaputh, Managing Director of National Healthcare Systems Co., Ltd. (N Health)

Through this collaboration, we will enhance convenience, speed, and ease of access by providing self-collection HPV DNA test services via N Health’s network of standardised health check-up centres distributed across all regions of the country.

“This approach will make it easier for Thai women to access vital cervical cancer screening services, including convenient self-collection tests. This self-collection test is viewed as the government’s invaluable gift to the health of Thai women. The project aims to optimise the use of government resources, ensuring that this screening programme reaches eligible Thai women comprehensively throughout the entire country,” he remarked.

Currently, N Health operates five registered HPV DNA testing units covering multiple areas throughout Thailand, including Bangkok, Rayong, Udon Thani, Chiang Mai, and Hat Yai. These units operate under the names N Health and BML Medical Technic Clinic.

The company is conducting proactive outreach through partnerships with public health agencies such as government hospitals, sub-district health promotion hospitals, health service support centres of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Health Department, as well as private hospitals and community clinics participating in the National Health Security Office (NHSO) scheme, also known as “Warm Community Nursing Clinics”.

The self-collection HPV DNA test offers Thai women a convenient and confidential screening option. This method allows independent sample collection, eliminating clinic visits and reducing discomfort. N Health is proud to participate in this project by providing on-site cervical cancer screening services to organisations across Thailand.

Self collection HPV DNA 3
Self-collection HPV DNA

This on-site approach enables working women to access screening during their workday without taking leave.  Facilitated by funding from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, this service is offered at no cost to Thai women, thus promoting equitable access to preventive healthcare.

“At present, we are collaborating with both public and private sectors to raise awareness and conduct proactive outreach in various locations. We can provide our services anywhere without restrictions on the recipients. We have already offered free cervical cancer screening to over 8,000 Thai women as part of government initiatives, and we aim to reach at least 100,000 Thai women this year. This is crucial in helping Thai women steer clear of cervical cancer,” Mr Narongrid added.

Women are a critical component in propelling both organisations and Thai society forward. N Health empowers organisations to prioritise the health of their female employees, thereby enhancing productivity and cultivating a corporate culture centred on well-being. Organisations interested in arranging free cervical cancer screening events for their staff or community can contact N Health’s Customer Relations Department on 02-7624-000.

This endeavour underscores a commitment to the health and well-being of Thai women, recognising that robust health is fundamental to a long, fulfilling life and contributes to a thriving economy and a progressive society.

The show’s popularity reflects a broader cultural shift in Japan, where public discussions about sexuality and gender diversity are uncommon. “The Boyfriend” quickly climbed to the top of Netflix Japan’s TV show charts and has also found success in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Thailand.

Japan is the only G7 nation that does not support same-sex marriage equality. Recent rulings from several prefectural courts have declared the ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, increasing pressure for legalization. However, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has struggled to advance these reforms due to strong opposition from conservative political leaders.

Nagatani Reina, a 40-year-old Thai-born transgender woman who has been living in Osaka for more than 15 years and recently gained Japanese citizenship in June, shared her insights with Khaosod English on the series’ impact on Japanese society.

“The Boyfriend has significantly expanded the safe space for LGBTQ people in Japan,” she said. The show has sparked widespread discussion in Japanese society, with many people around her, including her female colleagues, expressing their interest in it.

“This is the first gay reality show that’s prompted broader conversations about LGBTQ issues in Japan,” she continued. “I believe it will encourage younger people to come out more openly. The media is considered to have great influence. While Japan has had several LGBTQ series, they often lack the explicit NC scenes seen in Thai BL series. Japanese shows typically focus more on perspectives of love and societal living.”

Reina notes that while Japan has produced LGBTQ series like “Cherry Magic 30,” which Thailand has adapted into a Thai version, most Japanese BL series air late at night and target a niche audience. She views “The Boyfriend,” which streams on Netflix and reaches a broader audience, as a positive development. It reflects a gradual shift towards a more open society, particularly in large cities.

Another important aspect is the bravery of the participants in coming out publicly, as LGBTQ issues in Japan are often treated with a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ attitude. Many LGBTQ individuals in Japan keep their sexuality private due to concerns about the impact on their careers or family relationships.”

Little room for middle ground She compares the acceptance of LGBTQ individuals in Japanese society to the openness seen in Thailand 15 years ago. “Japanese society is gradually becoming more accepting of LGBTQ people, but it is still not completely open. Many people over 35 are unfamiliar with LGBTQ concepts, and those over 50 often only recognize men and women. Japan’s aging population contributes to this lack of awareness.”

Reina also shared her personal experience from 15 years ago when she first arrived in Japan. She encountered difficulties at university due to strict gender segregation. However, after her surgery, being recognized as a woman in Japan significantly eased her daily life.

“In Japan, there is little room for middle ground; people generally see things as either left or right, male or female. For a transgender woman who has undergone surgery, life in Japan can be relatively easy due to a certain level of acceptance. However, for gay men, understanding is less widespread, as many people continue to view them simply as ‘normal’ men.”

She continued, “Today, younger people in Japan, especially those under 26, are more aware of LGBTQ issues. Many are openly sharing their same-gender relationships both publicly and on social media. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube feature numerous programs discussing LGBTQ topics, and several Japanese actors and actresses have come out as LGBTQ. Despite this visibility, Japanese society often views these individuals primarily as entertainers, and their personal lives might still be judged differently

Reina added that many of her gay friends feel most themselves in the company of close friends. However, at work, they tend to share their personal matters only with trusted colleagues due to concerns about career advancement and potential discrimination.

Sparks Progressive Change In a conservative society that is gradually becoming more accepting of LGBTQ individuals, she noted, “Japan doesn’t outright reject LGBTQ people, but acceptance is not easy.” She added, “Even if a family accepts their son being gay, it doesn’t guarantee that grandparents will. With shows like The Boyfriend, while many viewers might be mothers, it’s likely that few would fully accept it if their own son came out as gay.” However, the widespread discussion surrounding the series has sparked a positive shift in societal acceptance, even if it is gradual.

Having lived in Japan for over 10 years, she views the Japanese government under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as relatively open-minded about sexual diversity. She noted that during her citizenship application process, she felt fortunate to be interviewed by a younger official, around 30 years old, as she might have faced challenges with someone over 50.

“Politically, there have been numerous reports about the Kishida government attempting to introduce LGBTQ-friendly laws. However, these efforts are often met with opposition. This push is not only about appealing to younger voters but also might be influenced by Prime Minister Kishida’s childhood experiences in the United States, which could have exposed him to more open-minded Western culture,” she said.

Locally, Reina highlighted that her hometown of Osaka was among the first cities in Japan to promote LGBTQ-friendly tourism campaigns (https://www.youtube.com/@VisitGayOsaka) and noted that more Pride Month events are now being held in major Japanese cities.

Looking ahead, she concluded, “While it’s difficult to predict if Japan will advance same-sex marriage laws as quickly as Thailand, I believe that in the next 5-10 years, Japanese society will engage in deeper discussions about LGBTQ issues than it does today.”

Paris Closes the Olympics and Los Angeles Turns to Tom Cruise for Its 2028 Mission

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — Paris is closing out two and a half extraordinary weeks of Olympic sports and emotion with a star-studded sunset show in France’s national stadium, handing over hosting duties for the Summer Games to the next city in line: Los Angeles in 2028.

Speculation was rife that Hollywood star Tom Cruise — seen around town during the final weekend — would feature in the closing ceremony that unlike the rain-drenched July 26 opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Games, basked in sunny, hot weather.

Shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach had taken their seats, the ceremony opened with a singer belting out “Under the skies of Paris” — sung in the past by Edith Piaf and others.

The stadium crowd roared as French swimmer Léon Marchand, dressed in a suit and tie instead of the swim trunks he wore to win four golds, was shown on the giant screens collecting the Olympic flame from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. There, the Olympic cauldron — powered by electricity instead of fossil fuels — had lit up the French capital for the duration of the Games, thrilling crowds by rising into the skies on a balloon every night.

For Los Angeles, topping Paris could be mission impossible. The French capital made spectacular use of its cityscape for its first Games in 100 years. The Eiffel Tower and other iconic monuments became Olympic stars in their own right, serving as backdrops and in some cases venues for competitions.

But Los Angeles was bringing star power of its own: singer Billie Eilish, rapper and Paris Olympics mainstay Snoop Dogg, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are scheduled to perform Sunday as part of the handover from the City of Light to the City of Angels.

Each of the music artists is a California native, including H.E.R., who is expected to sing the U.S. national anthem live at the Stade de France, which hosted Olympic track and field and rugby sevens. The audience was expected to top 70,000 people.

The stadium, France’s largest, was one of the targets of Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers who killed 130 people in and around Paris on Nov. 13, 2015. The joy and celebrations that swept Paris during the Games as Marchand and other French athletes racked up 64 medals — 16 of them gold — marked a major watershed in the city’s recovery from that night of terror.

The closing ceremony also will see the last medals — each embedded with a chunk of the Eiffel Tower — hung around athletes’ necks.

Fittingly for the first Olympics that aimed for gender parity, they’ll all be women — the gold, silver and bronze winners from the women’s marathon earlier Sunday.

The race — won by Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands — took the spot of the men’s race that traditionally closed out previous Games. In Paris, the men were bumped to the final Saturday, with Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola taking gold.

The switch was part of efforts in Paris to make the Olympic spotlight shine more brightly on the sporting feats of women. Paris was also where women first made their Olympic debut, at the Games of 1900.

The U.S. team again topped the medal table, with 126 in all and 40 of them gold. Three were courtesy of gymnast Simone Biles, who made a resounding return to the top of the Olympic podium after prioritizing her mental health instead of competition in Tokyo in 2021.

Following controversy that enveloped the opening ceremony — assailed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, French bishops and others over segments they felt poked fun at Christianity — the closing ceremony was being closely watched to see whether artistic director Thomas Jolly had any more surprises in store.

Jolly and other members of his creative team filed police complaints over death threats and online vitriol targeting them and some of opening show’s performers.

Critics jumped to the conclusion that a segment featuring drag queens and a DJ who is also an LGBTQ+ icon had parodied “The Last Supper,” Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting showing Jesus Christ.

Jolly and his team repeatedly insisted that was never their intention and got backing from Macron, who described himself as “outraged and sad” by the backlash against them.

US ties China in Paris Olympics gold medal count

The U.S. women’s basketball team held off France on Sunday to win gold in the final event of the Paris Olympics, and that hardware was needed for the Americans to tie China for the most with 40.

The U.S. easily won the total medal count with 126. Aside from the 40 gold, the Americans won 42 silver and 44 bronze.

“I saw the medal count beforehand so I knew,” said U.S. women’s coach Cheryl Reeve, who thought to herself, “that’s what we need — more pressure.”

The U.S. lost a bronze medal Sunday when the International Olympic Committee said it was reallocating the bronze given to Jordan Chiles in the women’s floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu. U.S. Olympic officials are appealing.

China came in second in the total medal race with 91. China won 40 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze. Japan was a distant third with 20 gold medals, 45 overall. Great Britain won 65 medals, but only 14 were gold for an overall ranking of seventh.

The medal rankings are done by gold, and the last time the U.S. didn’t top the standings was at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, when the Americans finished second to China, 48-36.

The U.S. has won the most overall medals in eight consecutive Summer Games. The last time the Americans failed to top the medal leaderboard was the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. The “Unified Team” featuring athletes from ex-Soviet republics won both the most golds (45) and total medals (112), while the Americans were second in both categories with 37 golds and 108 medals.

The U.S. had been battling with China for the lead in gold medals the last several days and entered Sunday, the final day of competition, trailing China 39-38.

China picked up an early gold medal Sunday when Li Wenwen won the top medal in women’s +81kg weightlifting. The U.S. followed with another gold when Jennifer Valente defended her women’s omnium title in cycling track.

It then came down to the women’s basketball game, and the U.S. won gold for the eighth consecutive time.

The United States won a total of five medals on Sunday, including a silver in women’s freestyle 76kg (wrestling), a team silver in women’s volleyball and a bronze in men’s water polo.

Three years ago at the Tokyo Olympics, the U.S. beat China with 39 gold medals to 38. The U.S. won 113 medals in Tokyo. The Americans were far more dominant at the Rio Olympics in 2016, when they won 46 gold medals to 27 for Great Britain 26 for China.

Thai Police Raid Chinese Factories: Hazardous Chemicals Found Again

Police search Phoem Phoon Sap factory in Phrong Madua, Mueang Nakhon Pathom, and Tai Bao Aluminum factory in Bang Kachao, Mueang Samut Sakhon on August 11, 2024.

SAMUT SAKHON —  Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division police raided illegal aluminum dross smelting factories, seizing over 10,000 tons of contraband. They identified it as hazardous to living organisms. The owners are Chinese nationals.

On August 11, police from the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division, armed with a court warrant, searched Phoem Phoon Sap factory in Phrong Madua, Mueang Nakhon Pathom, and Tai Bao Aluminum factory in Bang Kachao, Mueang Samut Sakhon.

Police search Phoem Phoon Sap factory in Phrong Madua, Mueang Nakhon Pathom, and Tai Bao Aluminum factory in Bang Kachao, Mueang Samut Sakhon on August 11, 2024.

This follows an incident on August 10 when Nakhon Pathom Highway Police, during a routine patrol, found a semi-trailer truck fully loaded with big bags. Suspecting industrial waste, they stopped the truck for inspection. The driver had no documentation, leading to suspicions of hazardous materials. The provincial industry office was called to assist.

The truck driver stated he picked up the material from Phoem Phoon Sap factory to deliver to Tai Bao Aluminum factory. Officials then inspected Phoem Phoon Sap, finding aluminum dross in two warehouses. Today, officials from the Department of Industrial Works and provincial industry offices re-inspected both locations.

At Tai Bao, 1,400 bags of aluminum dross weighing about 2,100 tons were found. No one claimed ownership during the search. A woman, identified only as Miss Ying, called to say the factory was closed for holidays and she was out of town but permitted the inspection.

At Phoem Phoon Sap, about 8,258 bags weighing 12,387 tons were found. This factory was operating without a license. Officials collected samples for testing and seized about 14,514 tons of dross as evidence.

Investigations suggest both factories are Chinese-owned, with Thai nationals serving as interpreters and managers. All involved will face charges of unauthorized possession of hazardous materials and operating factories without licenses.

Aluminum dross is harmful to living organisms if dispersed in air and water due to heavy metal content. When in contact with water or air moisture, it produces ammonia gas, causing odors in nearby areas. It can also create toxic dust, potentially ignite, and impact the ecosystem.

Previously, in early of April this year, the Department of Primary Industries and Mines (DPIM) uncovered the source of 13,400 tons of “cadmium waste”, a carcinogenic substance from zinc mining, in warehouses of at least three factories, two in Samut Sakhon province and one in Chonburi Province. They came from the Padaeng Industry mine in Tak Province.

In that case, Thai authorities charged two Chinese men who own the warehouses in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn.
