Controversial Chinese Passport Sales Ad in Bangkok Sparks Probe

BANGKOK  — The billboard, featuring large Chinese characters and a picture of an elderly person with a dignified appearance at Bangkok’s Huai Khwang intersection on Ratchadaphisek Road, came to light on July 22. Thai police have now launched an investigation.

It began when a Facebook user, later identified as Ms. Phattharanan Jarudul, 29, posted a picture of this billboard with the question, “Can they do this?” She gave an interview to media on Monday that she is a regular traveler on this stretch and usually sees advertisements for fried chicken stores.” Correction: “In an interview with the media on Monday, she said that she is a regular traveler on this stretch and usually sees advertisements for fried chicken stores.

She then used Google Translate to decipher the message and was surprised at the content, prompting her to post this on Facebook.

Ms. Phattharanan Jarudul, 29, posted a picture of this billboard with the question, “Can they do this?”

“I was personally surprised and wondered if it was really possible to buy a nationality. The entire ad was in Chinese, so it seemed to be targeting a specific group of customers. I was shocked to see such an advertisement for buying nationality in our country. It should have at least included Thai or English. It looks like niche advertising,” she said.

The poster advertised the conversion of citizenship and claimed that it was 100 percent legal. The citizenships offered were Indonesian for 30,000, Vanuatu for 70,000, Cambodian for 100,000 and Turkish for 150,000, without specifying the currency.

It also stated that passports could be obtained within 30 days, that security and confidentiality were guaranteed, that payment would be made on completion and that agents were being recruited worldwide.

Ms. Phattharanan Jarudul, 29, uses Google Translate to decipher the message on the controversial adversing billboard and was surprised at the content, prompting her to post this on Facebook.

The ad claimed to be from a company that has specialized in emigration services for over 13 years and was endorsed by government agencies. This raised questions among the public about the legality of acquiring citizenship in Thailand.

In the Huai Khwang neighborhood, often referred to as Bangkok’s second Chinatown, there are numerous stores with Chinese lettering. This billboard, measuring about 14×12 meters, was placed on a four-story building at the intersection.

When the reporters arrived to investigate, they found about 6-7 workers dismantling the billboard. When asked, one worker explained that his employer had instructed him to remove the billboard. When asked who the employer was, the worker did not answer and instead evaded the question.

Officers from Huai Khwang Police Station later confiscated the billboard and the installation equipment and took the workers for questioning to determine the employer and who ordered the advertisement.

Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, an MP from the Move Forward Party (opposition), commented that the situation, if real, is a serious problem and a slap in the face of the government.

“Considering the large non-Thai billboard, this shows a disregard for Thai law enforcement. The government and police should take this seriously. There is a large Chinese population in the Ratchada-Huai Khwang area, which is why the advertisement targeted Chinese speakers. This incident indicates that Thailand could become a hub for global threats,” he said.

Initially, Pol. Maj. Gen. Panthana Nuchnarat, deputy commander of the Immigration Department, confirmed that the sale of citizenship occurs worldwide, especially in countries with smaller populations seeking foreign business investment. However, he assured that such practices are not allowed in Thailand. The authorities will thoroughly investigate the case to determine the legality and possible violations of Thai law. If they are found guilty, legal action will be taken.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Panthana stated that initial investigations indicated that the advertisement was promoting the sale of nationalities in their respective countries and not in Thailand. The ad only used Thai advertising space, which does not appear to jeopardize Thailand’s security. Nevertheless, thorough checks are being carried out to prevent any impact on national security.

Police General Torsak Sukvimol, the National Police Chief, has also ordered the Metropolitan Police Bureau to urgently investigate the case of a Chinese-language billboard advertising passport sales. They are to determine who owns it, whether it violates any laws, and to swiftly pursue legal action against the offenders in all aspects, even though the billboard has already been taken down.

Furthermore, he has instructed the Immigration Bureau to thoroughly screen foreign nationals entering and residing in the Kingdom of Thailand to ensure compliance with immigration laws. This is to support and maintain a balance between tourism and national security. He emphasized that offenders, whether Thai or foreign nationals, must face legal consequences in all cases.

Later on July 22, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin also followed up on the issue by visiting Huai Khwang Police Station to talk with the police. He stated that he came only to emphasize the importance of proper legal compliance, especially regarding the installation of advertising billboards. He also instructed the Huai Khwang police to address the problems of illegal Chinese businesses, or so-called ‘Gray Chinese businesses’, and drug issues in the area.

Police Colonel Prasopchok Iampinit, Superintendent of Huai Khwang Police Station, said that he has coordinated with relevant agencies to inspect the building where the advertising billboard was installed on July 23. There are three main issues to be investigated: 1. The permission for installing the advertising billboard, 2. The payment of advertising taxes, and 3. The buying and selling of citizenship and passports. For the third issue, consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Immigration Bureau will be necessary to determine whether advertising the buying and selling of citizenship and passports is permissible in Thailand.

“From what we know now, there are 8 countries where citizenship can be bought and sold. This mostly occurs in countries with small populations that invite foreigners to do business in their countries. We will have a meeting to discuss this tomorrow,” he said.

Paitoon Ngamook, the director of Huai Khwang District, reported that his office had received reports about the billboard. If it is found to have been placed without proper authorization under the Public Health Act, the penalty could be up to three months in jail, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both, with additional daily fines of up to 10,000 baht. Other offenses are punishable by the police.

Thai Coconut Water Industry Shaken as “Vietnam” Competes for Chinese Market

RATCHABURI — The multi-billion dollar aromatic coconut water industry is facing upheaval as Vietnam enters the competition for the Chinese market. It has been revealed that some producers have been processing coconuts from outside the Ratchaburi geographical indication (GI) area for export.

Mr. Narongsak Chuensuchon, Managing Director of NC Coconut Co, Ltd. and Chairman of the Ratchaburi Provincial Industrial Council, told “Prachachat Business” that both whole coconuts and coconut water are currently very popular worldwide.

China, the main market, receives more than 60 percent of Thailand’s production of flavored coconuts, with bottled processed beverages earning up to 20 billion baht or 550 million US dollars annually.

Recently, it has been announced that Vietnam is starting to export coconut water to compete in the Chinese market, similar to durians. So if Thailand does not maintain its quality, it could lose the market to Vietnam.

coconut ratchaburi3

“Until now, Thailand has been the leading market for aromatic coconuts, but now Vietnam is pushing into the market. The hot and dry weather has led to a record-breaking price increase: Producer prices are 40 baht ($1.10) per coconut, consumer prices are 70-90 baht ($1.9-2.5) per coconut and international prices are reaching 200 baht per coconut.

Recently, some growers have been processing and exporting coconuts from outside the Ratchaburi region that do not meet the GI standard for aromatic coconuts, which affects the quality of sweetness and flavor and could affect the confidence and popularity of Thai aromatic coconuts in international markets.”

Fresh aromatic coconuts require high quality products as the flavor cannot be artificially enhanced. If processing plants use aromatic coconuts with a sweetness level of less than 7-8 Brix for export, this can have a detrimental effect on the product.

Therefore, it would be beneficial for the regulatory authorities to monitor this matter to ensure the quality and continuous growth of Thai aromatic coconut products in the global market. However, with the approaching rainy season, production is expected to increase in July-August 2024 and prices will steadily decrease to around 25-27 baht per coconut, a good and fair price for farmers and beneficial for export companies.

Ratchaburi was the first province to receive the GI label for aromatic coconuts in 2018. These coconuts must be grown in seven designated districts according to specific production methods: Damnoen Saduak, Wat Phleng, Mueang Ratchaburi, Ban Pong, Bang Phae, Pak Tho and Photharam.

Participants must register as members of the Ratchaburi Aromatic Coconut Producers Association and have traceability documents. The GI standard specifies a sweetness level of 6.5-8.0 Brix, whereas the general industry standard for Thai aromatic coconuts is 7-8 Brix.

NC Coconut Co., Ltd. produces and distributes real flavored coconut products under the NC Coconut brand, offering fresh flavored coconuts and processed products such as coconut jelly in whole coconuts, coconut jelly in cups and coconut pudding, mainly for export to markets such as China, Hong Kong, the United States and Australia, with China being the largest market. They normally export more than 10 containers per week with a production of over 100,000 coconuts per day.

In 2024, sales fell by 80 percent in the second quarter compared to the same period last year due to the severe drought caused by El Niño. It is expected to return to normal in the third and fourth quarters of 2024.

New Orange Line: Where Are the 28 Stations Connecting East and West Bangkok?

Orange Line
The Orange Line MRT, from the Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri (Suwinthawong), spans 22.5 kilometers with 17 stations, divided into 10 underground stations and 7 elevated stations.

BANGKOK — Another mass transit electric train line, the Orange Line, connecting the western and eastern routes, will be added in Bangkok after being delayed for 4 years due to legal disputes.

On July 18, the signing ceremony of the joint investment contract took place at Meeting Room 2, 9th floor, Building 1, MRTA, for the Orange Line MRT project, Bang Khun Non – Min Buri (Suwinthawong) section, between the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM).

Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, who presided over the signing ceremony, said that this signing marks an important starting point where both public and private sectors will fully collaborate to complete the construction of the Orange Line faster than planned.

Orange Line2
The signing ceremony of the joint investment contract takes place at Meeting Room 2, 9th floor, Building 1, MRTA on July 18, 2024.

He emphasized that the MRTA must closely supervise the construction, maintain the highest safety standards, and seriously implement measures to reduce impacts on communities and the environment, especially in the Rattanakosin Island area, which is a conservation area.

The Orange Line construction should have started several years ago, since the MRTA issued an invitation for private sector participation in a public-private partnership (PPP) on July 3, 2020. Later, there was a mid-process adjustment of private sector selection criteria, along with an announcement to cancel the bidding, causing private companies to file petitions with the Administrative Court for review.

Therefore, even though the bidding process was completed and BEM was granted the right to manage the project, they still couldn’t sign the contract.

Orange Line3

On June 12, 2024, the Supreme Administrative Court dismissed the case and upheld the lower court’s decision, stating that the invitation for joint investment in the project, the documents for private sector selection, and the adjustment of technical proposal criteria were not unlawful. The court approved the winning bidder to proceed with the project.

The joint investment contract, which was signed on July 18, 2024, is for the design and construction of the eastern section of the Orange Line, valued at 96 billion baht (2.64 billion US dollars). The second contract is worth 32 billion baht (881 million US dollars), includes:

  1. Electrical and mechanical system installation
  2. A 30-year Operation and Maintenance (O&M) contract for both the eastern and western sections of the Orange Line under the PPP Net Cost model.

BEM states that the key timeline targets are:

  1. Signing of the PPP contract on July 18, 2024
  2. Commencement of construction within Q1/2025
  3. Beginning of track system installation for the eastern section and partial operations in the latter half of 2028
  4. Completion of construction for the western section and full service launch by 2030

The Orange Line MRT project, Bang Khun Non – Min Buri (Suwinthawong) section, has a route connecting eastern and western Bangkok, with a total distance of 35.9 kilometers.

The eastern section (Thailand Cultural Centre – Min Buri (Suwinthawong)) spans 22.5 kilometers with 17 stations (10 underground stations and 7 elevated stations). The western section (Bang Khun Non – Thailand Cultural Centre) spans 13.4 kilometers with 11 stations (all underground stations).

Orange Line Stations

The Orange Line MRT, from the Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri (Suwinthawong), spans 22.5 kilometers with 17 stations, divided into 10 underground stations and 7 elevated stations as follows:

  1. Thailand Cultural Centre Station

Witthaya Phanmongkol, Deputy Governor (Operations) and Acting Governor of MRTA, said that MRTA plans to expedite the opening of services for both the eastern section before May 2028 and the western section before November 2030.

Sombat Kitjalaksana, Managing Director of BEM, said that BEM’s strength lies in its partnership with CH. Karnchang Public Company Limited, which has experience, knowledge, and expertise in civil works and electrical system procurement. They have the ability to manage risks that may arise from large-scale project implementation. Therefore, he is confident that the construction will face no obstacles and will be able to open for service within 6 years.

“It is estimated that in the first year of the eastern section’s opening in 2028, there will be approximately 150,000 passengers per trip per day. When the entire route is open, both eastern and western sections, it is expected to serve about 400,000 passengers per trip per day,” he said.

Biden Drops Out of 2024 Race After Disastrous Debate Inflamed Age Concerns and He Endorses Harris

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday, ending his bid for reelection following a disastrous debate with Donald Trump that raised doubts about his fitness for office just four months before the election.

The decision comes after escalating pressure from Biden’s Democratic allies to step aside following the June 27 debate, in which the 81-year-old president trailed off, often gave nonsensical answers and failed to call out the former president’s many falsehoods. Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take on Trump, and encouraged his party to united behind her.

Biden plans to serve out the remainder of his term in office, which ends at noon ET on Jan. 20, 2025.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted to his X account.

Nearly 30 minutes later, Biden throw his support behind Harris, the party’s instant favorite for the nomination at its August convention in Chicago.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he said in another post on X. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

Biden’s decision came as he has been isolating at his Delaware beach house after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, huddling with a shrinking circle of close confidants and family members about his political future. Biden said he would address the nation later this week to provide “detail” about his decision.

The White House confirmed the authenticity of the letter.

The announcement is the latest jolt to a campaign for the White House that both political parties see as the most consequential election in generations, coming just days after the attempted assassination of Trump at a Pennsylvania rally.

A party’s presumptive presidential nominee has never stepped out of the race so close to the election. The closest parallel would be President Lyndon Johnson who, besieged by the Vietnam War, announced in March 1968 that he would not seek another term.

Now, Democrats have to urgently try to bring coherence to the nominating process in a matter of weeks and persuade voters in a stunningly short amount of time that their nominee can handle the job and beat Trump. And for his part, Trump must shift his focus to a new opponent after years of training his attention on Biden.

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)

The decision marks a swift and stunning end to Biden’s 52 years in electoral politics, as donors, lawmakers and even aides expressed to him their doubts that he could convince voters that he could plausibly handle the job for another four years.

Biden won the vast majority of delegates and every nominating contest but one, which would have made his nomination a formality. Now that he has dropped out, those delegates will be free to support another candidate.

Harris, 59, appeared to be the natural successor, in large part because she is the only candidate who can directly tap into the Biden campaign’s war chest, according to federal campaign finance rules.

Biden’s backing helps clear the way for Harris, but a smooth transition is by no means assured.

The Democratic National Convention is scheduled to be held Aug. 19-22 in Chicago, but the party had announced that it would hold a virtual roll call to formally nominate Biden before in-person proceedings begin.

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)

It remained to be seen whether other candidates woul challenge Harris for the nomination or how party may need to adjust its rules again to smooth Harris’ nomination on the floor.

In 2020, Biden pitched himself as a transitional figure who wanted to be a bridge to a new generation of leaders. But once he secured the job he spent decades struggling to attain, he was reluctant to part with it.

Biden was once asked whether any other Democrats could beat Trump.

“Probably 50 of them,” Biden replied. “No, I’m not the only one who can defeat him, but I will defeat him.”

Biden is already the country’s oldest president and had insisted repeatedly that he was up for the challenge of another campaign and another term, telling voters all they had to was “watch me.”

And watch him they did. His poor debate performance prompted a cascade of anxiety from Democrats and donors who said publicly what some had said privately for months, that they did not think he was up to the job for four more years.

Concerns over Biden’s age have dogged him since he announced he was running for reelection, though Trump is just three years younger at 78. Most Americans view the president as too old for a second term, according to an August 2023 poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. A majority also doubt his mental capability to be president, though that is also a weakness for Trump.

AP24203665255891
FILE – President Joe Biden walks on stage before speaking in Las Vegas, July 16, 2024.President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday, July 21,  (AP Photo/David Becker, File)

Biden often remarked that he was not as young as he used to be, doesn’t walk as easily or speak as smoothly, but that he had wisdom and decades of experience, which were worth a whole lot.

“I give you my word as a Biden. I would not be running again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul I can do this job,” he told supporters at a rally in North Carolina a day after the debate. “Because, quite frankly, the stakes are too high.”

But voters had other problems with him, too — he has been deeply unpopular as a leader even as his administration steered the nation through recovery from a global pandemic, presided over a booming economy and passed major pieces of bipartisan legislation that will impact the nation for years to come. A majority of Americans disapprove of the way he’s handling his job, and he’s faced persistently low approval ratings on key issues including the economy and immigration.

Biden’s age surfaced as a major factor during an investigation of his handling of classified documents. Special counsel Robert Hur said in February that the president came across in interviews with investigators as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

The president’s allies seized on the statement as gratuitous and criticized Hur for including it in his report, and Biden himself angrily pushed back on descriptions of how he spoke about his late son.

Biden’s motivation for running was deeply intertwined with Trump. He had retired from public service following eight years serving as vice president under Barack Obama and the death of his son Beau but decided to run after Trump’s comments following a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, when white supremacists descended on the city to protest the removal of its Confederate memorials.

Trump said: “You had some very bad people in the group, but you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. On both sides.”

That a sitting president didn’t unequivocally condemn racism and white supremacy deeply offended Biden. Then, Biden won the 2020 election and Trump refused to concede and stood by for hours while his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, beating and bloodying law enforcement in a failed attempt to overturn the certification of Biden’s win.

“If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running,” Biden once said during at a campaign event.

Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Biden’s decision to leave the race, but he and his team had made their preference for facing Biden clear.

Despite making clear their preference for facing Biden, Trump’s campaign has also ramped up its attacks on Harris as pressure on Biden to step down has intensified in recent weeks.

Dusit Thani Hotel reveals its new look, as viewed from Lumpini Park, Bangkok.

BANGKOK The wait is over for the renovation of the 50-year-old luxury hotel in the center of Bangkok’s downtown. Dusit Thani Bangkok Hotel is set to reopen on September 27, 2024.

Following major renovations since its closure in 2019, the Dusit Group has unveiled exciting behind-the-scenes details, highlighting a comprehensive redesign aimed at creating a new legend in Bangkok.

Mrs. Suphajee Suthumpun, Group Chief Executive Officer of Dusit Thani Public Company Limited, and Natthaphan Sriyuksiri, Managing Director of Dusit Estate and Vice President of Design Strategy and Creative at Dusit Thani Public Company Limited, shared insights from the five-year renovation journey. They were joined by Somkiat Lojindaphong, Deputy Managing Director of Architects 49 Co., Ltd. (A49).

CEO of Dusit Thani discussed the challenges and aspirations for the redevelopment of the Dusit Thani Bangkok Hotel. She stressed the hotel’s new idea, “An Icon Reimagined,” which combines modernization with the preservation of its distinctive past.

Somkiat Suphajee Natapa

“Many changes have occurred between 50 years ago and the present. How can we restore the hotel to its former glory in the modern era? It must be upgraded and adjusted to meet higher standards while preserving the hotel’s distinctiveness.

The renovation combines innovation and modernity while retaining the core values of Dusit Thani Bangkok. The goal is to reestablish it as the finest hotel for Thai people, a shared source of pride for both Bangkok and the nation,” she said.

She further detailed the Dusit Central Park project, a major mixed-use development spanning 37,610 square meters with an investment of over 46 billion baht (approximately 1.265 billion US dollars).

The project comprises three buildings: Dusit Hotel, Dusit Residences, and Central Park Offices. Each building’s design reflects Thai aesthetics, with the hotel featuring a golden facade, Dusit Residences in rose gold, and Central Park Offices in silver. This color scheme aims to create a distinctive new landmark against the backdrop of Lumpini Park, Thailand’s first public park.

The Original Golden Spire

Ms. Natthaphan Sriyuksiri, Managing Director of Dusit Estate and Vice President of Design Strategy and Creative Work at Dusit Thani, discussed the complexity of creating the new Dusit Thani Bangkok Hotel while maintaining the brand’s identity.

She underlined that the makeover must convey warmth and sincerity not only via service but also from the moment customers enter the hotel. This rigorous attention to detail entails combining both ancient and new features to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for all Dusit Thani customers.

The famous golden spire, inspired by the top of Phra Prang Wat Arun Ratchawararam, is one of the key characteristics that Dusit Thani has preserved. The new spire has a translucent design that allows one to see the original golden spire inside.

Furthermore, the teak ceiling from the original Benjarong Restaurant, a hallmark of the establishment, has been meticulously conserved and transported to the current location. Each ceiling panel has unique Thai characteristics, with new color tones to add depth and significance.

The hotel has also kept the original mural paintings from the Heritage Floor Hall. These magnificent artworks, originally painted directly on the walls, necessitated painstaking restoration procedures.

During demolition, the entire wall was spared and will be placed in the new hotel’s banquet room entry hall. Silpakorn University experts helped preserve and restore these important items.

“Dusit Thani Bangkok Hotel serves as the flagship property for the Dusit Thani Group worldwide, setting the standard for the brand’s hotels globally,” says Ms. Natthaphan. “Therefore, the hotel’s design must align with current and future travel trends to meet the expectations of modern travelers.”

Sky Park Boosting Green Space

Somkiat Lojindaphong, Deputy Managing Director of Architects 49 Co., Ltd. (A49), who was vital in directing the design and décor of the Dusit Thani Bangkok Hotel, discussed the development process and design idea. He emphasized the significance of history for Dusit Thani, Bangkok’s first hotel founded more than 50 years ago.

“Dusit Thani’s new style connects the hotel to its urban surroundings, providing guests with more than just convenience. We developed an 11,200 square meter sky park that is open and accessible to everyone, with commercial and recreation areas for city inhabitants, boosting green space in Bangkok and catering to the lifestyle of those who want to be close to nature,” Somkiat said.

The building’s shape has changed from its original triangular design to a square structure with 39 floors. The building’s functions must be designed to reflect modern trends, with more spacious rooms that fully embrace the panoramic views of Lumpini Park through golden window frames, which are a distinguishing element of the new rooms.

“In addition, the hotel will have a rooftop bar and a sky lobby with magnificent city views. At the same time, it wonderfully captures the original aura and essence of Dusit Thani from 50 years ago,” Somkiat added.

Suphajee also stated that the Baan Dusit area on Saladaeng Road, behind the hotel, will continue to contain the Benjarong restaurants—Thien Duong, Baan Dusit Thani, NóMADA Bangkok, and Dusit Gourmet. With the hotel’s reopening, the enlarged space will be connected by electric tuk-tuks, providing seamless access between the hotel and Baan Dusit Thani.

Suphajee concluded, “Soon, we will release a documentary on online platforms detailing the Dusit Hotel history and the five-year journey of the Hotel reconstruction project.”

Magic Fails: 3,214 Days Visa Overstayed Drug Dealer Arrested in Koh Phangan

overstayed
Mr. Kenneth, age 47, Nigerian national, is arrested at a hotel in Moo 8, Koh Phangan Subdistrict, Koh Phangan District, Surat Thani Province on July 20, 2024.

KOH PHANGAN Tourist Police on Koh Phangan arrested a Nigerian man who was part of a cocaine trafficking network. The man had overstayed his visa by 3,214 days. He claimed to have magical powers that allowed him to avoid arrest, but this time he was caught off guard.

This arrest occurred during a period when Police Lieutenant General Saksira Phuek-am, Commander of the Tourist Police, ordered officers to crack down on crime, migrant workers, and offenses in 10 prohibited categories from July 19-23.

On July 20, Koh Phangan Tourist Police and related agencies found Mr. Kenneth, age 47, Nigerian national, standing on a walkway. When they approached to check his documents, he fled to his room.

Police followed him to a hotel in Moo 8, Koh Phangan Subdistrict, Koh Phangan District, Surat Thani Province. Upon checking his passport or travel documents, they found he had overstayed his visa by 3,214 days.

A body search revealed drugs in his left jeans pocket: one round ball of white powder cocaine wrapped in black plastic weighing 21.4 grams, and one cylindrical package of white powder cocaine wrapped in black plastic weighing 10.1 grams. Kenneth confessed they were his, intended for distribution to foreign friends.

Officials charged Kenneth with overstaying his visa and illegal possession of Category 2 narcotic (cocaine). He was then handed over to Koh Phangan Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Investigation revealed Kenneth entered Thailand on March 17, 2015, at 17:09 through Padang Besar Immigration, Songkhla Province. He was permitted to stay until October 1, 2015, with no record of visa extension.

He is a member of a Nigerian cocaine trafficking network illegally operating in Thailand. Each member has specific roles: one for money transfers, one for controlling cocaine stock, and others responsible for delivering drugs to designated spots after payment confirmation.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Winit Boonchit of Tourist Police Division 3 stated that Kenneth stayed in a luxury hotel on Koh Phangan. His role was to place cocaine at designated spots and send locations to customers. Kenneth told investigators he used magic to conceal himself before each drug delivery to avoid detection, but this time he was caught off guard.

The investigation also revealed that the group’s “concealment” involved a step-by-step process. If any member was arrested or behaved suspiciously, the group would know. All phone and WhatsApp Business conversations, images, and videos were set to automatically delete within one minute to avoid detection.

Opinion: Thaksin Returns to Public Limelight and Politics

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra gives an interview to a group of reporters at an ordination ceremony in Pathum Thani province on June 8, 2024
Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra gives an interview to a group of reporters at an ordination ceremony in Pathum Thani province on June 8, 2024

Finally, ex-convict-cum-former-premier Thaksin Shinawatra will complete his ‘parole’ next month, on August 22 to be exact, the Justice Ministry announced earlier this week.

For those wondering what role Thaksin will play four weeks from now and what will become of PM Srettha Thavisin, they should note an explanation provided by chief legal advisor of the government Wissanu Krea-ngam.

Wissanu said there was nothing to be confused about as back in 1991, when there was a coup, the junta leader then had more power than the prime minister. Without naming names, Wissanu referred to Gen. Sunthorn Kongsomponh, the junta leader, and PM Anand Panyarachun.

Wissanu added only journalists would be confused about such matters.

This sounds like Wissanu indirectly, or unconsciously, admitting that Thaksin is more powerful than PM Srettha. It is an accurate understanding of the political reality, however.

Thaksin is basically the supreme leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party. If it is a private company, then Thaksin is the chairman, the founder, and majority chair holder of Pheu Thai Company Limited and Srettha is more like a hired CEO, if not general manager of the company.

How they will divide their works and roles a month from now will be something we must wait and see, however. BTW, Wissanu added it is easier to ask him what formal position Thaksin cannot hold rather than have him give a very long list of what position can Thaksin be appointed to by the government or the Pheu Thai Party. Wissanu said Thaksin could not become a PM as it is forbidden by the current junta-sponsored charter.

A new constitution is in the process of being drafted, however.

I will go as far as to say Srettha’s role and gravitas will decrease as Thaksin asserts himself more publicly. Some Thais believe Thaksin is a megalomaniac so he really just could not help himself. He could have happily retired in Dubai, London, or Hong Kong, a long, long time ago, but over there he is just another Asian billionaire to most local people.

Here in Thailand, he is Thaksin Shinawatra and Thaksin cannot be content with merely pulling the strings from behind. The man is in need of constant adoration in order to reassure his ego or esteem and with him turning 75 or 76 next Friday (depending on whether you count it the Chinese or Thai way), he might as well enjoy it before he resembles Joe Biden.

Admittingly, things will be less complicated if Srettha is removed from power by the Constitutional Court in the coming months as a result of having appointed Pichit Chuenban, (who was Thaksin and Yingluck Shinawatra’s lawyer, BTW), as PM Office Minister despite Pichit having been charged for attempted bribery of a judge in the past. If Srettha is removed by the court, Thaksin can now choose someone even more obedient or chummier to replace Srettha.

Many anti-Thaksinites may regroup if Thaksin eventually comes out to the front stage more often and prominently despite the fact that he is basically already running the show from behind the scene. How the public perception is ‘managed’ will be crucial for not just the future of Thaksin and the Pheu Thai government but Thailand as well.

It would not just be Thaksin running the show alone like in the good old days two decades ago when he was officially the PM, however. The government is a coalition government with two pro-military parties, particularly Phalang Pracharath Party which is led by former deputy junta leader Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan who harbors the ambition of at least becoming a PM by name one day.

Trump Campaign Releases Letter on His Injury, Treatment After Last Week’s Assassination Attempt

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s campaign released an update on the former president’s health Saturday, one week after he survived an attempted assassination at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The memo, from Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, a staunch supporter who served as Trump’s White House physician, offers new details on the nature of the GOP nominee’s injuries and the treatment he received in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

It is the most thorough accounting to date of the former president’s condition since the night of the shooting, which also left one rally-goer dead and injured two others.

According to Jackson, Trump sustained a gunshot wound to the right ear that came “less than a quarter of an inch from entering his head, and struck the top of his right ear.”

The bullet track, he said, “produced a 2 cm wide wound that extended down to the cartilaginous surface of the ear. There was initially significant bleeding, followed by marked swelling of the entire upper ear.”

While the swelling has resolved and the wound “is beginning to granulate and heal properly,” he said Trump is still experiencing intermittent bleeding, requiring the dressing that was on display at last week’s Republican National Convention.

“Given the broad and blunt nature of the wound itself, no sutures were required,” Jackson wrote.

Trump was initially treated by medical staff at Butler Memorial Hospital. According to Jackson, doctors “provided a thorough evaluation for additional injuries that included a CT of his head.”

Trump, he said, “will have further evaluations, including a comprehensive hearing exam, as needed. He will follow up with his primary care physician, as directed by the doctors that initially evaluated him,” he wrote.

“In summary, former President Trump is doing well, and he is recovering as expected from the gunshot wound sustained last Saturday afternoon,” he added.

Jackson said in the letter that, as Trump’s former doctor, he was worried and traveled to Bedminster, New Jersey, where Trump had flown late Saturday after he returned from Pennsylvania, “to personally check on him, and offer my assistance in any way possible.”

He said he has been with Trump since that time, evaluating and treating his wound daily, and would remain with Trump through the weekend, including traveling to Michigan, where Trump held his first rally since the shooting, joined by his new running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance. At Saturday’s rally, the white gauze on Trump’s ear was replaced by a skin-colored bandage.

Jackson appears to be licensed to practice medicine in Florida, according to a state health department database. Records from the American Board of Emergency Medicine also show that Jackson has a certification in Emergency Medicine, valid through the end of 2025.

A spokesperson for the congressman did not immediately provide a response when asked about the status of his license, and Trump campaign’s did not immediately respond to questions.

Jackson has come under considerable scrutiny. After administering a physical to Trump in 2018, he drew headlines for extolling the then-president’s “incredibly good genes” and suggesting that “if he had a healthier diet over the last 20 years he might live to be 200 years old.”

In 2001, the Department of Defense inspector general released a scathing report on his conduct as a top White House physician that found Jackson had made “sexual and denigrating” comments about a female subordinate, violated the policy on drinking alcohol on a presidential trip and took prescription-strength sleeping medication that prompted worries from his colleagues about his ability to provide proper medical care.

Jackson denied the allegations, claiming he was the victim of a “political hit job” because of his close ties to the former Republican president.

Last year, Trump’s campaign released a letter on President Joe Biden’s 81st birthday from Dr. Bruce A. Aronwald, a New Jersey physician, who said he had been the former president’s doctor since 2021.

Trump’s campaign and federal law enforcement had released little information on his condition or treatment in the days after the the attack, declining to disclose medical records or hold briefings with the doctors who treated him at the hospital.

After a would-be assassin shot and gravely wounded President Ronald Reagan in 1981, the Washington, D.C., hospital where he was treated gave regular, detailed public updates about his condition and treatment.

Trauma surgeon Babak Sarani, who said he has been treating more patients with wounds from AR-15 style assault rifles, said the description in the letter was “exactly in line with what you would expect from a bullet wound.”

While the indirect damage is still usually minor, he said the risk of extensive damage is greater than if another gun were used.

“If a bullet whizzes by your ear from a low-caliber handgun, it’s not a big deal. … You get a headache or feel dizzy like a bad concussion,” said Sarani, chief of trauma at George Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C. “But if the bullet is from an assault rifle, the energy is bigger, broader, and you’re more likely to develop bruises.”

He added, “in Trump’s case, he got very lucky. The majority of the energy was released in the air. If it had hit him in the head, we would be having a completely different conversation.”

Former Secret Service agent Rich Staropoli said the AR-15-style rifle used by the gunman fires a 5.56 millimeter bullet at such high speeds — over 2,000 miles an hour — that just the air pressure as it passes can cause extensive damage.

“The shock wave alone could have ripped his ear off,” Staropoli said of Trump. “It’s amazing the bullet nipped him” and didn’t do any other damage.

“It’s a one in a billion type of thing,” he added. A fraction of a millimeter closer, “and this would be a different story. It really is incredible the thin line here between just a nick and devastating bodily damage.”

Dr. Kenji Inaba, chief of trauma and surgical critical care at the University of Southern California, said a follow-up by Trump’s physician was appropriate, including a mental health evaluation.

“Clearly any injury, no matter how minor, when there is intent, will be associated with some degree of post-traumatic stress, so this would also be a consideration for his medical team,” said Inaba in an email.

DSI Track 5 High-End Stolen Cars After Returning 30 Vehicles to UK

Tawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, DSI officials, and prosecutors lead Mr. Mark Gooding, British Ambassador to Thailand, and Mr. Duncan Burrage, NCA International Liaison Officer, to inspect all 30 recovered cars displayed in front of the DSI building on Chaeng Watthana Road on July 19, 2024.

BANGKOK — Vehicles stolen from the U.K. and brought into Thailand 7-8 years ago have been handed over by Thailand to return to their owners through the British National Crime Agency (NCA). 30 cars have been returned, but 5 more are still being tracked by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) officers. These are:

  1. Audi Q7 S Line, gray, chassis number WAUZZZ4M4HD026469
  2. BMW M4, bronze, chassis number WBS3R92030K344987
  3. Ferrari, white, chassis number ZFF79AMC000219631
  4. Porsche Boxster 718, yellow, chassis number WP0ZZZ98ZHS211836
  5. LAND ROVER Range Rover Sport, black, chassis number SALWA2EE8HA132932

The DSI is requesting that anyone in possession of these 5 vehicles check their cars. If found to be one of the listed vehicles, please contact the DSI immediately at hotline 1202.

At a DSI press conference on July 19, all 30 cars were displayed in the central hall in front of the DSI building on Chaeng Watthana Road.

Regarding this investigation, the DSI stated that they received a request for Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) from the U.K. through the Attorney General’s Office to investigate a group of individuals who had stolen luxury cars from England and illegally imported them into Thailand between 2016 and 2017.

The group of offenders, led by Mr. Intrasak or “Boy Unity,” along with Thai and foreign accomplices, leased luxury cars from various companies in the U.K. They falsely declared to British customs officials that these were new cars to export them by air from Heathrow Airport in London to Singapore, and then by sea into Thailand.

There were 35 cars in total, from 13 brands, all expensive vehicles worth nearly 3 million pounds sterling or over 100 million Thai baht. The NCA discovered this operation and coordinated with the DSI to investigate and prosecute this group and recover the stolen vehicles.

Mr. Mark Gooding, British Ambassador to Thailand, and Pol. Col. Tawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, hold a news conference on the return of stolen vehicles on July 19, 2024.

The Thai Attorney General, noting that part of the crime occurred outside the kingdom, assigned the DSI Director-General as the responsible investigating officer and appointed a special case prosecutor to join the investigation.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Payao Thongsen, Deputy Director-General of the DSI and head of the special case investigation team, found that the stolen vehicles were successfully imported into Thailand using three related companies as importers. They presented documents and paid taxes to the Customs Department to make the cars appear legal and able to be registered with the Department of Land Transport. The cars were then sold to the general public in Thailand.

On May 18, 2017, the DSI launched “Operation Titanium” with NCA observers present. Search warrants were executed at 9 suspicious locations in Bangkok, resulting in the recovery of 30 cars, including: 5 BMW M4s, 1 Ford Mustang, 1 Honda GT Type-R, 1 Lamborghini Huracan Spyder, 1 Lexus, 8 Mercedes Benz, 1 Mini Cooper, 3 Nissan GTRs, 5 Porsches, 2 Land Rovers, and 2 Volkswagen GTIs.

Tawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, DSI officials, and prosecutors led Mr. Mark Gooding, British Ambassador to Thailand, and Mr. Duncan Burrage, NCA International Liaison Officer in Bangkok, to inspect all the vehicles.

Thai officials also reported that the investigation has concluded, with legal proceedings initiated against Mr. Intrasak and 12 others on multiple charges, including theft by two or more persons, receiving stolen property for profit, and participating in a transnational criminal organization. After the Attorney General reviewed the investigation file, an order was issued to manage the 30 confiscated vehicles.

“The success in this matter is the result of coordination with all sectors, including the Department of Special Investigation, the Office of the Attorney General, the British Embassy in Thailand, and the NCA, demonstrating sincerity and seriousness in solving problems according to government policy,” the Minister of Justice stated.

Top UN Court Says Israel’s Presence in Occupied Palestinian Territories Is Illegal and Should End

The Judges enter the International Court of Justice, or World Court, in The Hague, Netherlands, Friday July 19, 2024, where the United Nations top court is delivering a nonbinding advisory opinion Friday on the legality of Israel's 57-year occupation of lands sought for a Palestinian state, a ruling that could have more effect on international opinion than it will on Israeli policies. (AP Photo/Phil Nijhuis)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The top United Nations court said Friday that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is unlawful and called on it to end, and for settlement construction to stop immediately, issuing an unprecedented, sweeping condemnation of Israel’s rule over the lands it captured 57 years ago.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly denounced the nonbinding opinion issued by the 15-judge panel of the International Court of Justice, saying the territories are part of the Jewish people’s historic homeland. But the resounding breadth of the decision could impact international opinion and fuel moves for unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.

The judges pointed to a wide list of policies, including the building and expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, use of the area’s natural resources, the annexation and imposition of permanent control over lands and discriminatory policies against Palestinians, all of which it said violated international law.

The court said Israel had no right to sovereignty in the territories, was violating international laws against acquiring territory by force and was impeding Palestinians’ right to self-determination. It said other nations were obliged not to “render aid or assistance in maintaining” Israel’s presence in the territories. It said Israel must end settlement construction immediately and that existing settlements must be removed, according to a summary of the more than 80-page opinion read out by court President Nawaf Salam.

Israel’s “abuse of its status as the occupying power” renders its “presence in the occupied Palestinian territory unlawful,” the court said, saying its presence must be ended as “rapidly as possible.”

The court’s opinion, sought by the U.N. General Assembly after a Palestinian request, came against the backdrop of Israel’s devastating military assault on Gaza, which was triggered by the Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel on Oct. 7. In a separate case, the International Court of Justice is considering a South African claim that Israel’s campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide, a claim that Israel vehemently denies.

The court said the General Assembly and Security Council — where staunch Israeli ally the United States holds a veto — should consider “the precise modalities” to end Israel’s presence in the territories.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will promptly transmit the advisory opinion to the 193-member world body and “it is for the General Assembly to decide how to proceed in the matter,” U.N. deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

The secretary-general reiterates his call for Israel and the Palestinians to engage “on the long-delayed political path towards ending the occupation and resolving the conflict in line with international law, relevant U.N. resolutions and bilateral agreements,” the spokesperson said.

Guterres also stressed that a two-state solution is “the only viable path” to seeing Israel and “a fully independent, democratic, contiguous, viable and sovereign Palestinian state” living side by side in peace and security, Haq said.

Israel, which normally considers the United Nations and international tribunals as unfair and biased, didn’t send a legal team to the hearings. Instead, it submitted written comments, saying that the questions put to the court are prejudiced and fail to address Israeli security concerns. Israeli officials have said the court’s intervention could undermine the peace process, which has been stagnant for more than a decade.

“The Jewish people are not conquerors in their own land — not in our eternal capital Jerusalem and not in the land of our ancestors in Judea and Samaria,” Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office, using the biblical terms for the West Bank. “No false decision in The Hague will distort this historical truth and likewise the legality of Israeli settlement in all the territories of our homeland cannot be contested.”

Speaking outside the court, Riad Malki, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, called the opinion “a watershed moment for Palestine, for justice and for international law.”

He said other nations must now “uphold the clear obligations” outlined by the court. “No actions of any kind … to support Israel’s illegal occupation.”

Hamas welcomed the court’s decision and said in a statement that “serious steps on the ground” need to be taken in response.

Israel captured the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians seek all three areas for an independent state.

Israel considers the West Bank to be disputed territory, the future of which should be decided in negotiations, while it has moved populations there in settlements to solidify its hold. It has annexed east Jerusalem in a move that isn’t internationally recognized, while it withdrew from Gaza in 2005 but maintained a blockade of the territory after Hamas took power in 2007. The international community generally considers all three areas to be occupied territory.

The court’s decision strikes at the heart of the ambiguity of Israel’s administration of the territories. Israel hasn’t annexed the West Bank — though settler groups have pressed it to do so — but it calls it part of its homeland and has effectively treated it as an extension of the nation. Along with the settlements, it has appropriated large swaths of the territory as “state lands.” At the same time, Netanyahu’s government has repeatedly rejected the creation of any Palestinian state. Abbas’ Palestinian Authority has been restricted to control over divided enclaves scattered around the West Bank.

The Palestinians presented arguments at hearings in February, along with 49 other nations and three international organizations. In the hearings, Malki accused Israel of apartheid and urged the United Nations’ top court to declare that Israel’s occupation of lands sought by the Palestinians is illegal and must end immediately and unconditionally for any hope for a two-state future to survive.

Erwin van Veen, a senior research fellow at the Clingendael think tank in The Hague, said before the decision that a ruling that Israel’s policies breach international law would “isolate Israel further internationally, at least from a legal point of view.”

He said such a ruling would remove “any kind of legal, political, philosophical underpinning of the Israeli expansion project.” It could also increase the number of countries that recognize a Palestinian state, in particular in the Western world, following the recent example of Spain, Norway and Ireland, he said.

It’s not the first time the ICJ has been asked to give its legal opinion on Israeli policies. Two decades ago, the court ruled that Israel’s West Bank separation barrier was “contrary to international law.” Israel boycotted those proceedings, saying they were politically motivated.

Israel says the barrier is a security measure. Palestinians say the structure amounts to a massive land grab, because it frequently dips into the West Bank.

The court said that Israel’s construction of settlements in the West Bank violated international laws prohibiting countries from moving their population into territories they occupy.

Israel has built well over 100 settlements, according to the anti-settlement monitoring group Peace Now. The West Bank settler population has grown by more than 15% in the past five years to more than 500,000 Israelis, according to a pro-settler group. Their residents are Israeli citizens governed by domestic law and served by government ministries, services, banks and other businesses — effectively integrating them into Israel.

Israel also has annexed east Jerusalem and considers the entire city to be its capital. An additional 200,000 Israelis live in settlements built in east Jerusalem that Israel considers to be neighborhoods of its capital. Palestinian residents of the city face systematic discrimination, making it difficult for them to build new homes or expand existing ones.

The international community considers all settlements to be illegal or obstacles to peace since they are built on lands sought by the Palestinians for their state.

Netanyahu’s hard-line government is dominated by settlers and their political supporters. Netanyahu has given his Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, a former settler leader, unprecedented authority over settlement policy. Smotrich has used this position to cement Israel’s control over the West Bank by pushing forward plans to build more settlement homes and to legalize outposts.
