BANGKOK — Thai Police have intensified investigation into the case of 6 foreign bodies found in a luxury Bangkok hotel, querying the possibility of a 7th person.

Following the shocking incident in central Bangkok where 6 foreigners were found dead in a 5th-floor room of a luxury hotel near Ratchaprasong area on Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin held a press conference along with high-ranking police officers.

These included Police General Torsak Sukvimol, National Police Chief; Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengsawang, Metropolitan Police Bureau Commander; and Police Lieutenant General Trairong Phiwphan, Central Forensic Science Division Commander.

The Prime Minister stated that this was an unexpected incident. Initial investigations revealed that hotel staff discovered 6 bodies – 4 Vietnamese nationals and 2 American nationals – at 4.30 p.m. on July 16. It’s estimated they had been deceased for 24 hours.

At the scene, there were no signs of robbery or assault. Authorities initially suspect that the six individuals consumed something, and there might be a seventh Vietnamese person who hasn’t been located yet. The PM has discussed and provided information to the Vietnamese embassy.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti said the room was due for check-out at noon. When staff attempted to clean the 5th-floor room in the afternoon, they couldn’t enter. Realizing the guests hadn’t checked out, hotel staff opened the room and discovered the deceased. They then notified management and Lumpini Police Station. At 5 p.m., investigation teams and forensic officers inspected the scene.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin arrives to confer with senior police officers overseeing the investigation into the case of 6 foreign tourist bodies found in a luxury hotel in central Bangkok on July 16, 2024.

Current information shows 6 deceased: 4 in the living area and 2 in the bedroom, 3 males and 3 females. They didn’t check in together. One group arrived on July 13, occupying 4 rooms on the 7th floor. Another group arrived on July 14, staying in 1 room on the 5th floor. In total, 5 rooms were booked for 7 people, with 5 checking in, but 6 bodies were found. Immigration police confirmed data for 5 individuals but found 6 bodies.

The 4 rooms on the 7th floor were due to check out on July 15 at noon. Their bags were moved to the 5th-floor room. The hotel reported no payment was made.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti added that in the living room, 6 plates of untouched single-dish Thai meals were found. There were also 6 cups of what appeared to be mixed drinks – 5 on a tray and 1 on a table, with residue. Forensics have collected all items.

6bodies evidence1
There are 6 cups of what appears to be mixed drinks – 5 on a tray and 1 on a table, with residue, inside the room where 6 foreign bodies were found.

All drinks were consumed. In the bathroom, they found a tea container resembling Oolong tea, one bottle of electrolyte drink, and one water bottle, all opened.

Two suspicious stainless steel objects, not belonging to the hotel, were found at the scene.

Investigators believe the six died after 1:53 p.m. on July 15. No clear wounds were found, and belongings were undisturbed. When housekeeping checked, the door was locked from inside and had to be opened from a back entrance.

Currently, Metropolitan Police and Immigration Police agree on these investigation directions:

  1. Verify if the 7th person actually entered the country.
  2. Gather all details about the 6 individuals through embassies and their registered social media.
  3. If there’s no 7th person, begin investigating possible motives.

Furthermore, the investigation team has coordinated with the embassy to examine all luggage in the room, looking for any potential evidence or clues that might indicate who was involved. This is to determine whether all individuals harmed themselves or if someone else was responsible for their deaths.

6bodies evidence2
In the living room, there are 6 plates of untouched single-dish Thai meals.

Currently, based on photographs, the fingernails and toenails of the deceased appear darkened, but this could be due to the bodies being deceased for approximately 24 hours. The autopsies will be conducted at Chulalongkorn Hospital, Thai Red Cross.

The Central Forensic Science Division will examine all details at the scene, including fingerprints and blood traces. Additionally, a toxicology expert team has been called in to investigate.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti stated that the police have not yet concluded whether the victims were drugged. They need to verify if there is a seventh person. Forensic evidence will provide answers, along with connecting other pieces of evidence. If everything aligns, they’ll be able to determine the cause.

“We’re currently searching for the seventh person because the numbers don’t match the check-in records. If they came together, there should be travel information, seat numbers, and airline details. We need to verify if this person actually entered the country. We’ve asked the embassy to check the occupations of the deceased and their purpose for traveling to Thailand. We’re also questioning the staff who served food to see if they noticed anything unusual,” said Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti.

Thailand Unveils 4-Year Plan to Become ASEAN’s Halal Hub by 2027

Pimpatra Wichaikul, Minister of Industry, guides Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin through a booth showcasing Thailand's Halal industry potential to the cabinet members at Government House Building 1 on February 27, 2024.

BANGKOK — The National Halal Industry Committee set guidelines for developing and driving the country’s halal industry over the next 4 years (2024-2027). The goal is to expand the country’s industrial GDP by 1.2%, totaling 55,000 million baht.

Following the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) of the Ministry of Commerce monitored the global food security situation, it was found that major countries importing agricultural and food products from Thailand have increasingly implemented food security measures by relying more on self-sufficiency.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is spearheading efforts to support Thailand as a food hub, particularly in the expanding Halal food market, which presents more growth and opportunities for Thailand to participate. According to the National Halal Industry Committee, Thai Halal food exports in 2023 expanded by 4.0% to 222,289 million baht.

The initial phase of Thailand’s Halal industry’s 4-year development plan, which aims to elevate Thailand as the hub of Halal excellence in ASEAN by 2027, targets five groups of Halal products and services:

  • Halal foods, such as meat and seafood
  • Halal fashion, including textiles, pearls, and leather goods
  • Halal pharmaceuticals, herbal products, and cosmetics
  • Cocoa and related products
  • Halal services and tourism

The government has also outlined operational frameworks to enhance the quality and international standards of Thailand’s Halal product manufacturing industry through three main strategies:

halal business1

Promoting international trade and strengthening the supply chain for Thai Halal products. This includes promoting Thai Halal food products’ potential and expanding their domestic and global market.
Developing production capabilities and standards for Thailand’s Halal industry. This entails creating prototype Halal products and improving the export capabilities of Thai Halal industry entrepreneurs.
Improving the environmental factors affecting Thailand’s Halal industry. This includes:
a. Establishing the Halal Intelligence Unit (Halal IU) as a database for in-depth market reports and analysis.
b. Developing the Thailand Halal Valley in the southern region to serve as the hub for the country’s Halal industry development. This involves:

Establishing testing laboratories for Thai Halal products
Developing the skills of the Thai Halal workforce and personnel.

“We want to push Thailand to become the global food hub and the Halal hub of ASEAN by 2027, creating opportunities for farmers and food-related entrepreneurs, stimulating the economy, creating jobs, and distributing income for Thai people and the Thai economy,” Government Spokesperson Chai Wacharonke stated on July 15, 2024.

Myanmar Nationals Arrested for 3M Baht Gold Scam in Bangkok

U Win, a 65-year-old Myanmar national, was arrested for involvement in a joint fraud case at a hair salon near the front of a hotel in Bangkok on July 16, 2024.

BANGKOK — Immigration Bureau officers arrested 3 Myanmar nationals for deceiving a victim as gold traders.

On July 16, 2024, at the Immigration Office in Muang Thong Thani, Deputy Commissioner Pol. Lt. Gen. Panthana Nuchanart of the Immigration Bureau held a press conference regarding the arrest of 3 Myanmar nationals for deceiving a victim into buying gold from a gold vault.

Mr. U Win, a 65-year-old Myanmar national, was arrested for involvement in a joint fraud case at a hair salon near the front of a hotel on Pradipat Road, in Phaya Thai sub-district and district. Mr. Tew Te and Mr. Chulin, also Myanmar nationals, were apprehended for deceiving a victim by claiming to be gold traders wanting to buy a large quantity of gold for resale.

They used the victim as coordinator to purchase gold from a gold vault at a department store in the Yaowarat area. As collateral, they convinced the victim to deposit money and assured him that if the gold vault sold the gold, he would refund the deposited money, leading the victim to transfer 3,135,000 baht (approximately 87,000 US dollars).

myanmar gold scam2

Later, although the gold vault agreed to sell the gold to the group as mentioned earlier, it turned out that U Win and his associates did not have the money to buy the gold and did not return the deposited collateral money to the victim.

The victim demanded the return of their money but could not contact them. The suspects left Thailand, prompting the victims to file a complaint with the investigating officers at Phaya Thai Police Station.

Afterward, it was discovered that the suspects had returned to Thailand. They were arrested and brought to the investigating officers at Phaya Thai Police Station. Other accomplices involved are being investigated and pursued for further legal action.

Thailand’s Oat Milk Market Heats Up with New Entrant Oatbedient

Yilin Soh, Director of Be Oatbedient

BANGKOK — Thailand’s alternative milk business is expected to expand further, driven by a growing health trend among younger Thais. According to Kasikorn Research Center, the plant-based food market is expected to be 45 billion baht by 2024. This trend drives sales of alternative plant-based milks such as soy, almond, and oat milk.

The oat milk market in Thailand is becoming increasingly competitive, with local and international producers fighting for market share by supplying goods through modern trade and coffee shop partnerships. This increase shows customer desire for oat milk as a healthier option.

Oatbedient, a Singaporean oat milk brand with high growth potential, recently entered the Thai market. Despite its short presence, the brand has garnered significant interest.

Yilin Soh, Director of Be Oatbedient, highlighted the potential of Thailand’s oat milk market in an interview with Khaosod English. Oatbedient, owned by Listen Up Pte Ltd, a Singaporean food technology company, focuses on minimally processed, lactose-free, and good-carbohydrate products catering to health-conscious consumers, especially younger Thais embracing healthy trends.

oat milk1

“While Oatbedient is new to Thailand, our parent company has established itself in markets like Mongolia, China, and Singapore,” Soh explained. “The brand name may differ by location. Thailand is the first ASEAN country we have entered due to its strong interest in food trends. Thai people are known for being open-minded, creative, and having a sophisticated palate.”

The popularity of Thai coffee shops leads to the growth of alternative milk. According to Soh, coffee shops are more than just places to get a drink; they also represent a lifestyle. “We see significant potential in Thailand’s growing food trend,” she said “Compared to the smaller and less creative market in Singapore, Thailand boasts a vibrant coffee shop scene with unique and innovative drink menus.”

This insight has led Oatbedient to focus on two key segments: direct consumers and B2B partnerships with coffee shops. While the company sees similar growth potential for oat, pistachio, and soy milk, oat milk currently enjoys the highest growth trajectory. However, soy milk still holds the largest market share overall. Oatbedient’s B2B sales expectation to approximately 20 million baht in annual, with significant room for further expansion. However, the consumer market is still very modest when compared to established brands.

Sights Set on Top 3 Oat Milk Brands

When asked about the proportion of brands that dominate the Thai oat milk market size, Soh admits that it is difficult to assess because the market is still new and there are no clear sales figures. However, she notes that the major brands commonly found in this market are Oatside and Oatly.

For Oatbedient, she admits that it’s challenging, but she hopes and aims for Oatbedient to be one of the top three oat milks distributed in Thailand within 3 years.

We’re trying to grow in a sustainable way. While we can’t market it like competing brands do, we compete and grow in our own way. We aim to distribute in retail stores. Online channels and cafes through building a brand community, which we have already begun to do, such as fitness, Wellness, schools, which reflects the founder’s ideas. Because we want to communicate directly with customers that Why choose this brand? How does this brand stand out? be good by ourself, based on the our name ‘Oat + Obedient’, where we create products based on the voice of our customers.”

She said that Oatbedient stands out from other oat milk brands because it contains no sugar added (Barista). There is no-non dairy creamer added in. Not using palm oil and no gums & Thickeners as an ingredient. Oatbedient is simply delicious and does not contain harmful or unnecessary components

“Other oat milk brands may develop tastes or ingredients that are better suited to the coffee shop industry. But at Oatbedient, we produce products with flavors and ingredients that are more consumer-friendly.”

First Instant oat milk

oat milk4

In addition to the ingredients that emphasize minimal flavoring, the Director of Be Oatbedient also talks about the plan to enter the oat milk market in Thailand. “For Oatbedient, we are the first oat milk brand in Thailand to have instant oat milk powder. Currently, we have products available in the Thai market such as ready-to-drink oat milk, barista formula, in 1 liter and 250 ml sizes, Oatbedient Oat Milk Powder – 1 box (12 packets), Oatbedient Chocolate Oat Milk Powder, and Oatbedient Oat Milk with Oats & Chia Seeds Powder.”

“Instant oat milk for drinking is another strength of our brand. Of the three flavors, Chia Seeds is the best-selling. At the same time, our oat milk powder does not contain any other flour ingredients. Therefore, you can use Oatbedient Chocolate Oat Milk Powder as an ingredient in bakery, ice cream, or anything else you want.

Additionally, within this year, the company plans to launch new products in ready-to-drink boxes in two flavors: a zero sugar-free formula and a chocolate flavor. We’ll also introduce another powder in the Cafe Series, with 3 more flavors: mocha, latte, and matcha.”

Soh concluded by addressing some debates among netizens regarding the trend of drinking oat milk: “I don’t think it’s about whether this or that is better. For oat milk, oatmeal has been eaten in the past for breakfast. We’ve just changed the form to drinking. Everyone can make it fit and balanced. At Oatbedient, we only want to provide simple products to our customers. We never said this was better or that kind of milk is better.

It’s a choice for consumers to make for themselves. Sometimes you may choose to drink cow’s milk. Sometimes you may choose to drink alternative milk. Each type of milk provides different benefits. Oat milk may be higher in fiber, while cow’s milk may contain more calcium. Therefore, I would like to see this as a choice for consumers.”

Patong Resort Hotel Increases Investment in Personal Data Protection

With Phuket being a destination for over 10 million tourists worldwide and hotels constantly collecting and using customers’ personal data, Patong Resort has increased its investment in personal data protection to meet both GDPR standards and Thai law (PDPA) with the help of PDPA Thailand Consultant Team.

Since the Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (PDPA) was fully enforced on June 1, 2022, Thailand’s personal data protection standards and measures have been dramatically lifted, closely aligned with the GDPR, the European Union’s data protection law. While there are some differences in details, this alignment requires the collection, use, disclosure, or transfer of personal data both domestically and internationally to comply with the relevant laws, measures, and guidelines for personal data management and protection.

Patong Resort Hotel Co., Ltd., as an accommodation provider hosting numerous Thai and international tourists, recognizes the importance of the PDPA in protecting the personal data of their guests according to Thai law, in addition to the measures the hotel has already implemented under international laws, especially the GDPR. Therefore, Patong Resort has decided to significantly increase its investment in personal data protection according to Thai law, aiming for comprehensive and accurate compliance with the PDPA in all aspects by hiring PDPA Thailand for consultation.

Dr. Udomtipok Phaikaset, CEO of DBC Group Co., Ltd. and founder of PDPA Thailand, stated regarding personal data in the hotel industry, “The hotel business is directly involved with personal data, evident from the collection of customer data, including foreign customers’ particularly from the European Union, where GDPR law applies. If hotels wish to target advertisements to these customers after their stay, they must seek consent. Integrating PDPA with GDPR helps in understanding the nature of personal data protection, covering legal protections for both Thai and foreign customers.”

Aroonrat Swatthong, Managing Director of Patong Resort Hotel Co., Ltd., commented on implementing PDPA and using personal data protection consulting services from PDPA Thailand, “Our hotel collects substantial amounts of data from Thai and foreign guests. To ensure the best care experience, making them feel secure and respected, we took notice and wanted to proceed when the PDPA was fully enforced but were unsure of the exact steps to take. Knowing a DPO is necessary but still uncertain, we sought personal data protection consultation. The service revealed numerous legal aspects needing attention, such as drafting privacy notices, RoPA, consent forms, managing data subjects’ rights, and establishing measures for data breach incidents.”

“Patong Resort chose PDPA Thailand for their comprehensive consulting services, expertise, and experience with various organizations, including listed companies and top firms, as well as their advisory experience with hotels, ensuring a deep understanding of our business,” added Mrs. Aroonrat.

“PDPA Thailand offers personal data protection consulting services to organizations nationwide, particularly recommending the service to the hotel sector due to the primary role of personal data processing in operations and its significant impact on reputation if data incidents/breaches occur. Reputation is crucial in the hotel business,” concluded Dr. Udomtipok.

Who Is JD Vance? Things To Know about Donald Trump’s Pick for Vice President

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Former President Donald Trump on Monday chose U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio to be his running mate as he looks to return to the White House.

Here are some things to know about Vance, a 39-year-old Republican now in his first term in the Senate:

Vance rose to prominence with the memoir ‘Hillbilly Elegy’

Vance was born and raised in Middletown, Ohio. He joined the Marines and served in Iraq, and later earned degrees from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He also worked as a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley.

Vance made a name for himself with his memoir, the 2016 bestseller “Hillbilly Elegy,” which was published as Trump was first running for president. The book earned Vance a reputation as someone who could help explain the maverick New York businessman’s appeal in middle America, especially among the working class, rural white voters who helped Trump win the presidency.

“Hillbilly Elegy” also introduced Vance to the Trump family. Donald Trump Jr. loved the book and knew of Vance when he went to launch his political career. The two hit it off and have remained friends.

He was first elected to public office in 2022

After Donald Trump won the 2016 election, Vance returned to his native Ohio and set up an anti-opioid charity. He also took to the lecture circuit and was a favored guest at Republican Lincoln Day dinners where his personal story — including the hardship Vance endured because of his mother’s drug addiction — resonated.

Vance’s appearances were opportunities to sell his ideas for fixing the country and helped lay the groundwork for entering politics in 2021, when he sought the Senate seat vacated by Republican Rob Portman, who retired.

Trump endorsed Vance. Vance went on to win a crowded Republican primary and the general election.

He and Trump have personal chemistry

Personal relationships are extremely important to the former president and he and Vance have developed a strong rapport over years, speaking on the phone regularly.

Trump has also complimented Vance’s beard, saying he “looks like a young Abraham Lincoln.”

Vance went from never-Trumper to fierce ally

Vance was a “never Trump” Republican in 2016. He called Trump “dangerous” and “unfit” for office. Vance, whose wife, lawyer Usha Chilukuri Vance, is Indian American and the mother of their three children, also criticized Trump’s racist rhetoric, saying he could be “America’s Hitler.”

But by the time Vance met Trump in 2021, he had reversed his opinion, citing Trump’s accomplishments as president. Both men downplayed Vance’s past scathing criticism.

Once elected, Vance became a fierce Trump ally on Capitol Hill, unceasingly defending Trump’s policies and behavior.

He is a leading conservative voice

Kevin Roberts, president of the conservative Heritage Foundation, called Vance a leading voice for the conservative movement, on key issues including a shift away from interventionist foreign policy, free market economics and “American culture writ large.”

Democrats call him an extremist, citing provocative positions Vance has taken but sometimes later amended. Vance signaled support for a national 15-week abortion ban during his Senate run, for instance, then softened that stance once Ohio voters overwhelmingly backed a 2023 abortion rights amendment.

He is married to a lawyer who was a Supreme Court clerk

Vance met his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, at Yale, where she received both her undergraduate and law degrees. She spent a year clerking for future Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh when he served as an appeals court judge in Washington, followed by a year as a law clerk to Chief Justice John Roberts.

She had been a trial lawyer for the Munger, Tolles and Olson law firm. Her law firm announced Monday that she had left the firm.

“Usha has been an excellent lawyer and colleague, and we thank her for her years of work and wish her the best in her future career,” Munger, Tolles & Olson said in a statement.

Vance has adopted Trump’s rhetoric about Jan. 6

On the 2020 election, he said he wouldn’t have certified the results immediately if he had been vice president and said Trump had “a very legitimate grievance.” He has put conditions on honoring the results of the 2024 election that echo Trump’s. A litany of government and outside investigations have not found any election fraud that could have swung the outcome of Trump’s 2020 loss to Democratic President Joe Biden.

In the Senate, Vance sometimes embraces bipartisanship. He and Democratic Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown co-sponsored a railway safety bill following a fiery train derailment in the Ohio village of East Palestine. He’s sponsored legislation extending and increasing funding for Great Lakes restoration, and supported bipartisan legislation boosting workers and families.

Vance can articulate Trump’s vision

People familiar with the vice presidential vetting process said Vance would bring to the GOP ticket debating skills and the ability to articulate Trump’s vision.

Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative activist group Turning Point USA, said Vance compellingly articulates the America First world view and could help Trump in states he closely lost in 2020, such as Michigan and Wisconsin, that share Ohio’s values, demographics and economy.

Thailand Is Set To Roll out a Controversial $13.8 Billion Handout Plan in Digital Money to Citizens

Thailand's prime minister said Monday July 15, 2024 that eligible businesses and individuals can register from August for digital cash handouts, a controversial program that will cost billions of dollars and is meant to boost the lagging economy.

The government announced in April the widely criticized ambitious plan, named the “Digital Wallet,” meant to give 10,000 baht (about $275) to 50 million citizens in digital money to spend at local businesses.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin posted on the social platform X, saying the registration will begin Aug.1 and that he has given instructions to ensure the smooth implementation of the program.

The “Digital Wallet” was a major campaign promise of the ruling Srettha’s Pheu Thai party ahead of last year’s general election. The government says that this scheme will cause an “economic tornado,” and Srettha has said the stimulus and subsequent consumption are expected to boost gross domestic product growth by 1.2 to 1.6 percentage points.

However, economists have criticized the program, calling it an ineffective way to contribute to sustainable economic growth compared to other measures.

In addition, its financing has faced several hurdles, delaying its planned implementation. At first, the government said the state Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives would cover some of the funding needed. However, after warnings by financial experts, it was announced that the project’s funding would come out of the 2024 and 2025 fiscal budgets.

Deputy Minister of Finance Julapan Amornvivat said at a news conference on Monday the budgetary funding became possible after the plan’s estimated cost dropped from 500 billion baht ($13.8 billion) to 450 billion baht ($12.4 billion), asserting that all estimated 50 million people will still be part of the program as only up to 90% of those eligible utilized them in previous handouts.

Julapan added that the Digital Wallet committee has agreed to exclude tens of thousands of shopowners and cash recipients who have a record of committing fraud in past programs.

The plan also has certain limitations, such as excluding certain goods that are yet to be decided, and earlier proposals suggested oil, services, and online purchases should be among them. Julapan said the Commerce Ministry would handle the exclusions set to be announced next week after the detailed plan is submitted to the Cabinet.

Thailand has in recent years suffered from a sluggish economy that appears to have deteriorated with no clear sign of growth. This month, the World Bank’s Thailand Economic Monitor projected GDP growth of 2.4% for the year 2024.

The ruling Pheu Thai party had initially suggested digital wallet payments for all Thais 16 and older, but later this was limited to only lower-income Thais, defined as people with yearly incomes not exceeding 840,000 baht (about $23,000) and savings in financial institutions not totaling more than 500,000 baht ($13,700).

BANGKOKOn July 15, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, along with Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, signed a Ministry of Interior announcement regarding the list of countries and territories whose passport or travel document holders entering the Kingdom temporarily for tourism, work, or short-term business purposes are exempt from visa requirements and allowed to stay in the Kingdom for up to sixty days as a special case.

As Thailand has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting the country’s economic conditions and causing a decline in economic activities for businesses and the tourism sector, it is necessary to attract foreign tourists and promote foreign businesspeople with high economic potential in Thailand to enter the Kingdom for tourism, work, or short-term business purposes.
