The Criminal Court granted one-month bail to detained political hunger strikers Tawan and Bam Tuesday afternoon per request from Thammasat University Hospital which care for the two and were concerns about their deteriorating health. The two have been on hunger strike for twenty days now.
According to AP, Tantawan “Tawan” Tuatulanon, 21, and Orawan “Bam” Phuphong, 23, have been on hunger strike since Jan. 18 — much of that time refusing water as well as food — to back their demands for reform of the justice system, the release of political prisoners pending trial and for lawmakers to amend or abolish laws used against political dissidents.
Their lawyer, Krisadang Nutcharas, said they are in poor condition, and at risk of losing their lives.
“Their parents didn’t sleep last night and they have been here since morning,” said Krisadang at the Thammasat University Hospital in a northern suburb of Bangkok, the capital. “This is not a scripted drama to ask people for their sympathy.”
The two women agreed a few days ago to resume taking water. Refusing all liquids in addition to food can cause permanent injury and even death if carried on for an extended period.
The two activists are among at least 228 people, including 18 minors, have been charged with violating the lese majeste law, which carries a prison term of three to 15 years for insulting the monarchy. Critics say the law, also known as Article 112, is often wielded as a tool to quash political dissent.
Student-led pro-democracy protests beginning in 2020 openly criticized the monarchy, previously a taboo subject, leading to vigorous prosecutions under the law, which had previously been relatively rarely employed.
Sitthichok Sethasavet, a food delivery driver convicted in January of lese majeste, is also on a hunger strike and being kept at the same hospital.
The Criminal Court denies bail to political detainee Sitthichoke on Tuesday, said Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. The man has been on a hunger strike in prison for 22 days now. He is at Thammasat University Hospital under the supervision of the Corrections Department.
Weighing the Cost of Getting Invisalign in Bangkok
Before delving into the cost of Invisalign in Bangkok, you should decide whether or not you need braces. The explosion of social media has caused many people to seek orthodontic treatment for aesthetic reasons but there are also functional reasons why you should get treatment for your teeth. This is usually to improve your speech or your ability to eat.
Here are some other reasons why you might need orthodontic treatment:
Teeth that are misaligned or too crowded
Inability to floss or only with a lot of difficulties
Misaligned teeth cause you to bite your tongue often
The upper and lower teeth do not mesh together when your mouth is closed
Difficulty in speaking clearly due to your tongue’s position in your mouth caused by misaligned teeth
Fatigue in your jaw from chewing on food
Specific Cases Where Orthodontic Treatment is Needed
Overcrowding – When too many teeth are on the upper and lower jawline, it can cause overcrowding. This overcrowding can cause a number of dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. The lack of any accessible gaps between the teeth also makes it more difficult to keep teeth clean which further aggravates the oral health of the patient.
Underbite and Overbite – When there are discrepancies in the upper or lower jaw, a misalignment can occur which can affect speech and the ability to chew food. Orthodontics can help improve the ‘bite’ which would improve both the function and speech of the patient.
Crossbite – This occurs when the upper and lower jaws are asymmetrically misaligned causing you to bite your cheeks.
Excessive spacing between teeth – Large gaps between the teeth can occur from congenitally missing teeth, tooth decay, or an accident.
Is Invisalign Suitable for Everyone?
Invisalign is suitable for most people who have healthy teeth and gums. One big advantage of Invisalign is that thanks to its almost transparent appearance, it’s suitable for working adults to have their teeth aligned. The convenience of it being removable makes keeping your teeth clean while undergoing the alignment treatment a breeze.
When undergoing teeth alignment treatment, it’s important to keep up with the scheduled dental appointments so that your orthodontist can keep a close eye on the progress. This will allow him to make any adjustments to your treatment regime quickly when needed.
Cost of Invisalign in Bangkok
Cost is usually a prohibitive factor when it comes to deciding whether or not to seek orthodontic treatment. That’s why it’s important to weigh the pros and cons when deciding whether to go for metal braces or Invisalign.
Every patient case is different and this will have an effect on the cost of treatment but Invisalign treatments usually start at 79,000THB while the price of metal braces ranges from between 50,000 to 60,000THB.
Although Invisalign requires a slightly higher investment, the convenience and aesthetics of this teeth alignment system make it a worthwhile investment.

TAK — A baby girl was rescued on Tuesday morning after she fell down a 15-meter well near the Thai-Myanmar border.
Rescuers spent nearly 18 hours digging through the night to reach the 1-year-old child who fell into the 30-centimeter-wide well in Phop Phra district on Monday afternoon. The girl, a daughter of migrant workers from Myanmar, appeared to be in good health when she was taken to the surface. She was immediately taken to hospital for a medical examination.
The girl’s mother said she and her husband were harvesting cassava when she found out that her daughter went missing. She and her colleagues then searched the area without success, not until she suspected her daughter might have fallen into a nearby well. She called her daughter’s name into the hole and heard a baby crying.
More than 100 people were involved in the rescue mission. Three excavators carefully dug through the surface overnight, while an oxygen tube was lowered into the hole so the girl could breathe. Rescuers dug the rest of the way by hand and freed the child.
As the girl was brought to the surface, a crowd of onlookers cheered in relief, while her parents cried with happiness and thanked the rescuers.
“I have only one child and this incident has brought a shock to my family,” the girl’s father said. “I’d like to thank every Thai for helping my daughter. I promise I will take good care of my daughter.”

ADANA, Turkey (AP) — The death toll from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks rose to more than 5,000 on Tuesday as more bodies were pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings.
Turkey’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said the total number of deaths in Turkey had risen to 3,419, with another 20,534 people injured. That brought the number of people killed to 5,102, with another 1,602 people confirmed dead on the Syrian side of the border.
Countries around the world dispatched teams to assist in the rescue efforts, and Turkey’s disaster management agency said more than 24,400 emergency personnel were now on the ground. But with such a wide swath of territory hit by Monday’s earthquake and nearly 6,000 buildings confirmed to have collapsed in Turkey alone, their efforts were spread thin.

Attempts to reach survivors were also impeded by temperatures below freezing and close to 200 aftershocks, which made the search through unstable structures perilous.
Nurgul Atay told The Associated Press she could hear her mother’s voice beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in the city of Antakya, the capital of Hatay province, but that her and others efforts to get into the ruins had been futile without any rescue crews and heavy equipment to help.
“If only we could lift the concrete slab we’d be able to reach her,” she said. “My mother is 70-years-old, she won’t be able to withstand this for long.”
Across Hatay province, just southwest of the earthquake’s epicenter, officials say as many as 1,500 buildings were destroyed and many people reported relatives being trapped under the rubble with no aid or rescue teams arriving.

In areas where teams worked, occasional cheers broke out through the night as survivors were brought out of the rubble.
The quake, which was centered in Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras, sent residents of Damascus and Beirut rushing into the street and was felt as far away as Cairo.
The medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders confirmed Tuesday that one of its staff members was among the dead after his house in Syria’s Idlib province collapsed, and that others had lost family members.
“We are very shocked and saddened by the impact of this disaster on the thousands of people touched by it, including our colleagues and their families,” said Sebastien Gay, the group’s head of mission in Syria.
Gay said health facilities in northern Syria were overwhelmed with medical personnel working around “around the clock to respond to the huge numbers of wounded.”
In Turkey’s Hatay province, thousands of people sheltered in sports centers or fair halls, while others spent the night outside, huddled in blankets around fires.
Turkey has large numbers of troops in the border region with Syria and has tasked the military to aid in the rescue efforts, including setting up tents for the homeless and a field hospital in Hatay province. Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said a humanitarian aid brigade based in Ankara and eight military search and rescue teams had also been deployed.
A navy ship docked on Tuesday at the province’s port of Iskenderun, where a hospital collapsed, to transport survivors in need of medical care to the nearby city of Mersin. Thick, black smoke rose from another area of the port, where firefighters have not yet been able to douse a fire that broke out among shipping containers that were toppled by the earthquake.

In the Turkish city of Gaziantep, a provincial capital about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from the epicenter, people took refuge in shopping malls, stadiums, mosques and community centers.
At least 3,381 people were killed in 10 Turkish provinces, with more than 20,000 injured, according to the latest figures from Turkish authorities on Tuesday. The death toll in government-held areas of Syria climbed to 769 people, with some 1,450 injured, according to the Health Ministry. In the country’s rebel-held northwest, groups that operate there said at least 450 people died, with many hundreds injured. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared seven days of national mourning.
Authorities fear the death toll will keep climbing as the rescuers look for survivors among tangles of metal and concrete spread across the region beset by Syria’s 12-year civil war and refugee crisis.
In the latest pledges of international help, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said he was preparing to swiftly dispatch a 60-person search and rescue team as well as medical supplies and 50 soldiers. Pakistan’s government sent a flight carrying relief supplies and a 50-member search and rescue team early Tuesday, and said there will be daily aid flights to Syria and Turkey from Wednesday. India said it would send two search and rescue teams, including specially trained dogs and medical personnel.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Ankara Wednesday to express his condolences and solidarity, according to a statement from Islamabad.
U.S. President Joe Biden called Erdogan to express condolences and offer assistance to the NATO ally. The White House said it was sending search-and-rescue teams to support Turkey’s efforts.
The quake piled more misery on a region that has seen tremendous suffering over the past decade. On the Syrian side, the affected area is divided between government-controlled territory and the country’s last opposition-held enclave, which is surrounded by Russian-backed government forces. Turkey is home to millions of refugees from the Syrian civil war.

In the rebel-held enclave, hundreds of families remained trapped in rubble, the opposition emergency organization known as the White Helmets said in a statement. The area is packed with some 4 million people displaced from other parts of the country by the war. Many live in buildings that are were already damaged by military bombardments.
Strained medical centers quickly filled with injured people, rescue workers said. Some facilities had to be emptied, including a maternity hospital, according to the SAMS medical organization.
More than 7,800 people were rescued across 10 provinces, according to Orhan Tatar, an official with Turkey’s disaster management authority.

The region sits on top of major fault lines and is frequently shaken by earthquakes. Some 18,000 were killed in similarly powerful earthquakes that hit northwest Turkey in 1999.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured Monday’s quake at 7.8, with a depth of 18 kilometers (11 miles). Hours later, another quake, likely triggered by the first, struck more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) away with 7.5 magnitude.
The second jolt caused a multistory apartment building in the Turkish city of Sanliurfa to topple onto the street in a cloud of dust as bystanders screamed, according to video of the scene.
Thousands of buildings were reported collapsed in a wide area extending from Syria’s cities of Aleppo and Hama to Turkey’s Diyarbakir, more than 330 kilometers (200 miles) to the northeast.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Someone in Washington state overcame steep odds Monday night to win an estimated $747 million Powerball jackpot.
The winning numbers were 05, 11, 22, 23, 69 and the Powerball 07.
Lottery officials said in a statement early Tuesday that a single ticket matched all six numbers and was worth $754.6 million.
The full jackpot is for a winner opting for an annuity distributed in one immediate but partial payout followed by additional payments over 29 years that increase by 5% annually. The winner also can opt for a one-time cash payment of $407.2 million.
Both prizes available are the amounts before taxes, Powerball said.
The lottery game’s website shows the jackpot for the next drawing on Thursday has dropped to $20 million.
Monday night’s win was the first Powerball jackpot win since Nov. 19, 2022. That winless streak allowed the prize to grow larger and larger until it stood as the ninth-largest in U.S. history.
Higher interest rates have allowed annuity payments to increase compared with earlier jackpots, when rates were lower. Most winners prefer the immediate cash prize.
The game’s abysmal odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to build big prizes drawing more players. That strategy certainly has worked recently, as someone in Maine won a $1.35 billion Mega Millions prize in January and a California player hit a record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot last November. No one has claimed either of those prizes.
Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
News media Thai News Network (TNN), TV channel True4U and True Corporation released an internal circular expressing their “deepest condolences” for the loss of the senior media employee while on the job.
A day after a Facebook page called “Jordub” announced the death of a media employee after persistent overwork and lack of relaxation on 5 February 2023, parent company True Corporation, along with its affiliates, published a letter to “all TNN employees”
The letter informs that Sarawuth Srisawasdi, Bird, died of a heart attack on February 4, 2023, while working at the TNN news channel.
TNN’s statement
A colleague of his said a housekeeper saw Sarawuth falling asleep on his desk at 4 am on 4 February. Assuming that he was resting, the housekeeper did not wake him until late morning when she became suspicious as his whole body was lopsided. She then called the police and the rescue team.
According to Thai labour law, a worker may not work more than 8 hours per day or as agreed, but never more than 48 hours per week. After a continuous working time of no more than 5 hours, the worker is entitled to a rest break of at least 1 hour per day.
A weekly holiday of at least 1 day a week at intervals of a 6 days period must be arranged for the employee.
For workers in the hotel industry, in the logistics industry, workers working in rural areas, or for other work covered by ministerial regulations, the employer and the worker may agree to accumulate leave within 4 consecutive weeks and postpone it to the agreed period.

In the case of continuous work, if interruption of work would cause damage or if it is an emergency, the employer may allow the employee to work overtime or on a holiday if necessary.
The worker is entitled to a rest period of more than 20 minutes before the start of overtime if the overtime is longer than 2 hours (unless the nature of the work requires continuous performance. The worker must give consent to the overtime or in an emergency situation).
Sarawuth’s funeral ceremony is held at the Mahawong Temple in Samut Prakan and the cremation ceremony will be held on 8 February 2022. Several of his colleagues attended the funeral to pay their last respects.
Overwork to the point of death has been around for a long time. In Japan, it’s called “karoshi”. In 2013, there was a case similar to Sarawuth’s death, when a journalist died of a heart attack.
What happened to Sarawuth has sparked a public debate, especially in the journalism industry. The BBC Thai Service reported on the incident, citing a study by Jeffrey Pfeffer, Stanford professor of organisational behavior, who has written more than 15 books, including the book: “Dying for a Paycheck”.
His work suggests that the work culture has become inhuman. On the one hand, entrepreneurs neglect their employees. On the other hand, in an economy where an employee can’t work full-time, instability occurs. Professor Pfeffer suggests that every worker must take care of his or her health. Should you work in an unbalanced workplace, you must resign.
“I want to tell you that if you are in a room full of smoke, you will find a way out of it because it is detrimental to your health. Everyone must ask for a law. We have to ask for it together.”
The Thai government has officially published a new law allowing foreigners to work or invest in 18 selected companies to boost the economy.
The Royal Thai Gazette website published a notice from the Ministry of Interior about a special permit allowing migrant workers to live in the Kingdom. The notice (the 3rd version) was signed on February 3 by Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Cha-o-cha and Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paochinda.
The new version of the announcement focuses on new target industries for migrant workers, namely highly skilled specialists, investors, executives and entrepreneurs for startups.
In accordance with the SMART visa program, a new type of visa designed to attract highly skilled workers, with a maximum residence permit of 4 years in Thailand, announced by the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) in hopes of economic recovery and foreign direct investment, the Ministry of Interior deleted a verse in number 1 (1) in the first announcement signed on January 30, 2018, and later revised in the second announcement signed on February 26, 2019, as follows:
“(1) a highly qualified specialist, an investor, executive and entrepreneur for startups to work, invest, build and manage businesses in Thailand in the following target industries and meet BOI requirements approved by the Cabinet.
Automotive industry
Electronic industry
Quilyty travelling industry
Agriculture, Food, and Biotechnology industry

Manchester City has been accused of numerous breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations between 2009-18. (AP Photo/Dave Thompson, File)
Manchester City was accused by the Premier League on Monday of providing misleading information about its finances over a nine-year period when the club was attempting to establish itself as a force in English and European soccer following its takeover by Abu Dhabi’s ruling family.
The explosive development came after a four-year investigation by the world’s most popular soccer league in the wake of leaked club emails and documents from City officials, published by German magazine Der Spiegel in 2018. The documents showed the extent of the schemes to allegedly cover up the true source of income in a bid to comply with financial regulations.
The Premier League has financial fair play rules designed to ensure clubs essentially spend what they earn from deals that are assessed for being at legitimate market value. The case could lead to a fine or a worse punishment, like a deduction in points.
The league released a long statement detailing a list of about 80 alleged breaches of its financial rules by City from 2009-18, the first nine full seasons under Abu Dhabi ownership. In that time, the team won three Premier League titles — in 2012, 2014 and 2018 — in what has become the most successful period in City’s 143-year history.
The league also accused City of 30 more breaches relating to its alleged failure to co-operate with the investigation since December 2018.
The breaches were referred to an independent commission, which will be made up of three judges appointed by a lawyer who chairs the league’s judicial panel. The commission’s hearing will be held in secret and there is no timetable for a verdict.
In a statement, City said it was “surprised” by the allegations, “particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL (English Premier League) has been provided with.”
“The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position,” City said. “As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
FILE – Manchester City has been accused of numerous breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations between 2009-18. (Peter Powell/Pool via AP, File)
The league has accused City of breaching rules requiring provision “in utmost good faith” of “accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position” between 2009-18 and failing to give “full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts” from 2009-13. Roberto Mancini was manager during that period.
The third and fourth offenses are a failure to comply with UEFA regulations from 2013-18 and the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules from 2015-18.
For the fifth offense, City is accused of breaching rules requiring clubs to “co-operate with and assist the Premier League with its investigations” from December 2018 to the present day.
City, the defending Premier League champion and a team owning some of the world’s top players like Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, could be at risk of severe punishment. The league’s rule book gives a disciplinary commission powers to impose a range of sanctions plus the wider scope of “such other penalty as it shall think fit.”
A large fine seems inevitable if the charges are proven. Also in play is a point deduction, a title nullified or even being expelled from the Premier League, according to league rules.
City never disputed that the documents leaked by Der Spiegel were authentic, but has argued the evidence was stolen and reported out of context.
While City was under investigation by the Premier League, the club had a two-year ban from European club competitions overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2020 after UEFA ruled City committed “serious breaches” of financial fair play regulations from 2012-16. That case arose on the back of the leaked information, too.
The published evidence appeared to show City deceived UEFA by overstating sponsorship deals from 2012-16 and hid the source of revenue linked to state-backed companies in Abu Dhabi.
As for Mancini, the evidence in Der Spiegel showed he doubled his base salary of 1.45 million pounds (now $1.75 million) for advising a club in Abu Dhabi.
City was not fully cleared of wrongdoing in the UEFA case, though CAS said some of the allegations were not proven or could not be judged because of a statute of limitations in UEFA rules. There are no such time limits on the finances under investigation by the Premier League.
CAS also fined City 10 million euros (then $11.3 million) for failing to cooperate with investigators. The club’s “blatant disregard” should be “strongly condemned,” the court’s judges said.
City has been transformed into an English soccer power since being bought in September 2008 by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family.
A report from Deloitte last month said Man City generated the highest revenue of any club in the world — totaling 619.1 million pounds ($745 million) in the 2021-22 season.
Under its Abu Dhabi ownership, City — which previously lived in the shadow of neighbor Manchester United — has won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and six English League Cups.
The team is in second place in the Premier League midway through this season, five points behind Arsenal having played one game more.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southeastern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday, toppling hundreds of buildings and killing more than 4,000 people.. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.

On both sides of the border, residents jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn quake rushed outside on a cold, rainy and snowy winter night, as buildings were flattened and strong aftershocks continued.
Rescue workers and residents in multiple cities searched for survivors, working through tangles of metal and giant piles of concrete.

In the Turkish city of Adana, one resident said three buildings near his home collapsed. “I don’t have the strength anymore,” one survivor could be heard calling out from beneath the rubble as rescue workers tried to reach him, said the resident, journalism student Muhammet Fatih Yavus. Further east in Diyarbakir, cranes and rescue teams rushed people on stretchers out of a mountain of pancaked concrete floors that was once an apartment building.
On the Syrian side of the border, the quake smashed opposition-held regions that are packed with some 4 million people displaced from other parts of Syria by the country’s long civil war. Many of them live in decrepit conditions with little health care. Rescue workers said hospitals in the area were quickly filled with the injured.

“We fear that the deaths are in the hundreds,” Muheeb Qaddour, a doctor, said by phone from the town of Atmeh, referring to the entire rebel-held area. Raed Salah, the head of the White Helmets, the emergency organization in opposition areas, said whole neighborhoods were collapsed in some areas.

The quake, felt as far away as Cairo, struck a region that has been shaped by more than a decade of civil war in Syria. Millions of Syrian refugees live in Turkey. The swath of Syria affected by the quake is divided between government-held territory and the country’s last opposition-held enclave, which is surrounded by Russian-backed government forces. The quake was centered about 90 kilometers (60 miles) from the Syrian border outside the city of Gaziantep, a major Turkish provincial capital.
At least 20 aftershocks followed, some hours later during daylight, the strongest measuring 6.6, Turkish authorities said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter that “search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched” to the areas hit by the quake.

“We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage,” he wrote.
There were at least 6 aftershocks, and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu urged people not to enter damaged buildings due to the risks.
“Our priority is to bring out people trapped under ruined buildings and to transfer them to hospitals,” he said.
Tallies from various officials put the toll at at least 38 dead in Turkey and 62 in Syria.
At least 130 buildings tumbled down in Turkey’s Malatya province, neighboring the epicenter, Gov. Hulusi Sahin said. In the Turkish city of Diyarbakir, at least 15 buildings collapsed. Rescue teams called for silence as they listed for survivors in a toppled 11-story building.

In northwest Syria, the opposition’s Syrian Civil Defense described the situation in the rebel-held region as “disastrous” adding that entire buildings have collapsed and people are trapped under the rubble.
