On December 12, Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, hosted the first Visiting Session on promoting Russia’s business and investment potential, organized by the Roscongress Foundation with the support of the Embassy of the Russian Federation and the Trade Mission of the Russian Federation in the Kingdom of Thailand.
More than 180 representatives of business and business associations of Thailand took part in the session. The event brought together industries such as IT, healthcare, development, industry, energy, retail, agriculture and tourism.
Thailand maintains mutually beneficial relations with Russia despite Western sanctions. Thus, in 2023, trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Thailand continued to develop, reaching a volume of $ 1.5 billion. The speakers of the session are confident that this is not the limit – the basis for further cooperation should be business cooperation between Russia and Thailand, a continuous effective dialogue.
Roscongress Foundation projects can contribute to its development – their presentation became the main event of the visiting session. Chairman and Director of the Roscongress Foundation Alexander Stuglev, presented such projects as the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Russian Energy Week, the Russian Tourism Forum “Let’s Travel!”, the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum, the Russian Design Industry Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum. Alexander Stuglev said, that Thai business is already participating in the events of the Roscongress Foundation: for example, in 2023, the Chairman of the Federation of Industry of Thailand, Kriengkrai Thiennukul, and representatives of 157 companies from various industries, including energy and IT, visited the Eastern Economic Forum, and in 2024 Thailand presented a large-scale exposition at the “Let’s Travel!” Forum.
“As it was noted at the recently held International Business Forum “World of Opportunities: Russia-ASEAN”, cooperation with the ASEAN countries has been and remains one of the priorities of Russia’s state policy. Thailand, as one of the leading economies of the Association, is especially interesting for Russian business. The Roscongress Foundation’s task is to provide all opportunities for cooperation between Russian and Thai businesses,” – Alexander Stuglev said.
Work on the development of cooperation is already underway. Russia offers Thailand favorable conditions for doing business. For example, special economic zones, such as the territories of advanced development in the Far East, provide tax benefits and
simplified administrative procedures. Thailand is interested in Russian exports and supports the tourist flow from Russia. Stable supplies of Russian agricultural products and energy resources support Thailand’s domestic industries and help reduce costs.
“Thailand and Russia have built successful cooperation in strategic areas: energy, agriculture, law enforcement issues are being discussed through the security councils of Russia and Thailand. In addition, our countries are considering the possibility of an agreement on a free trade zone with the EAEU, which can contribute to the development of economic cooperation. Humanitarian cooperation is also underway: joint projects in science, education, and culture. I am sure that the last session will become the basis for the development of work in these areas, including at the venues of the largest Russian business events,” – said Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Thailand Evgeny Tomikhin.
Participation in Russian forums is also an opportunity for Thai businesses to find partners, conclude agreements and discuss joint projects.
“We receive a lot of requests from both Russian and Thai businesses for cooperation. Today, dialogue is more important than ever for effective interaction in order to find solutions to common challenges. That is why Thai business needs to participate in Russian events, including those of the Roscongress Foundation: the more companies become participants, the greater the potential for cooperation we will receive,” said Yuri Lyzhin, Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in the Kingdom of Thailand.
Representatives of the business community also shared their experience of Russian-Thai cooperation. The speakers of the discussion were the Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in the Kingdom of Thailand Yuri Lyzhin, Representative of the All-Russian Public Organization of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises “OPORA Russia” in Bangkok Konstantin Gorshenev, Vice President, Co-Founder, Cloudsec Asia Dr. Varin Kera, Head of the Executive Council of the Chamber of Commerce of Thailand Adit Krisanavong.
The participants of the session expressed hope for the continuation of the dialogue in 2025 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which will be held from June 18 to 21, as well as in the autumn at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok from September 3-6.
