DE Warns of Fake LINE Account Impersonating Metropolitan Electricity Authority

DE warns the public about a fake LINE account impersonating the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), urging people to beware of scammers attempting to steal money and personal information.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE), through the Anti-Fake News Center Thailand (AFNC), has released the results of its monitoring and reporting of fake news, in line with the policy of Mr. Chaichanok Chidchob, Minister of Digital Economy and Society, to prevent and address security and social threats. The Ministry has prioritized raising public awareness of technology-related crimes, fake news, and misinformation.

On 11 October 2026, AFNC monitored a total of 106,498 messages, of which 11,432 messages required verification. The majority of suspicious information was detected through Social Listening, accounting for 11,426 messages, followed by 6 messages reported through the LINE Official channel.

A total of 15 issues were identified for verification, with results received from relevant agencies for 8 issues. Among these, the seven stories attracting the greatest public interest comprised 2 true news stories, 3 fake news stories, and 2 misleading information stories, as follows:

True News: The Treasury Department offers commemorative IMF–World Bank coins for exchange at two prices, ranging from 100 to 700 baht.

True News: Children from low-income families can apply for financial assistance from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.

Fake News: The Metropolitan Electricity Authority has opened a LINE account named “ฝ่ายทะเบียน กฟน.” (MEA Registration Department).

Fake News: Thai people will become test subjects for medicines and vaccines.

Misleading Information: Receiving three different COVID-19 vaccine formulations causes irregular menstruation, allergies, skin rashes, and low platelet counts.

Fake News: NOVA products help reduce the risk of gout by addressing its causes, controlling uric acid levels, and protecting joints and kidneys.

Misleading Information: Doctors warn that sleeping with the lights or television on places additional strain on the heart.

One of the notable cases involved the claim that the Metropolitan Electricity Authority had opened a LINE account named “ฝ่ายทะเบียน กฟน.” (MEA Registration Department).

The DE Ministry, in cooperation with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), investigated the claim and confirmed that it was fake news.

MEA warned that scammers have been impersonating the organization by using its name and official logo to create a fraudulent LINE account under the name “ฝ่ายทะเบียน กฟน.” to deceive members of the public.

MEA confirmed that it does not authorize its personnel to use personal LINE accounts to request personal information, one-time passwords (OTPs), or send links for downloading applications.

Members of the public who wish to check electricity bills, make payments, or request refunds of electricity usage deposits can safely access MEA’s official services through the MEA Smart Life application, downloaded only from the App Store or Google Play, or through its official e-service website at eservice.mea.or.th.

The DE Ministry remains concerned about the spread of fake news and misinformation across online and social media platforms. Sharing unverified information may lead to misunderstanding, financial losses, misuse of personal information, and broader impacts on society.
