Unemployed Man Commits Suicide by Bomb, Police Say

Korat Police Lt. Col. Supol Surawut stands near the scene where a 27-year-old man, who had until recently been in prison since age 18, killed himself with a homemade bomb.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — An unemployed ex-convict killed himself with a bomb yesterday, police in northeastern Thailand said.

Ponthawat Charoenwetch, 27, detonated a homemade explosive at a fresh produce market in Nakhon Ratchasima province at around 2am early Monday, according to local officer Police Lt. Col. Supol Surawut, who said the man had been unable to find work since being released from prison.

“He was upset that his friends and close ones insult and reprimand him for being jobless,” the officer told reporters.

Ponthawat died at the scene, and no one else was injured in the incident, Supol said.

Witnesses said Ponthawat could not find work after being released recently from prison after serving nine years behind bars for rape, assault and drug charges, Supol said.

He was seen drinking heavily alone at the deserted marketplace prior to detonating a homemade bomb he was carrying with him, the officer said.
