Thai actor Jes Jespipat Tilapornput has apologised after his Halloween costume depicting Michael Jackson in the singer’s “Thriller” music video drew criticism from international social media users over the use of dark makeup to change his skin colour.
Jes deleted the photos after facing backlash, with critics accusing the look of being racially insensitive.
In a statement posted on social media, Jes said neither he nor his team had intended to mock or insult anyone. He apologised for failing to review the work carefully before the photoshoot and publication.
He said the creative team had prepared the content in advance and he only learned about it on the day of the shoot, when time was limited.

Jes acknowledged that being rushed and tired had led him to overlook how the images and video could affect others or be interpreted as mocking or discriminatory.
He also accepted responsibility for allowing the content to be produced and posted on his social media accounts, saying the incident was an important lesson in reviewing all work carefully before agreeing to it.
The stylist behind the concept, who goes by the name Artery, also issued an apology and accepted full responsibility for developing the idea and overseeing the production.
Artery said the concept was inspired by Jackson’s “Thriller” music video and involved skin-darkening makeup to resemble a Black person.

Reflecting on the controversy, the stylist said using skin colour as part of a costume or to portray a character was inappropriate, even when the intention was to admire or pay tribute to an artist.
Artery apologised for the team’s lack of consideration and understanding, and said the criticism would prompt a review of their creative approach, particularly when dealing with social and cultural issues.
